WELCOME Park Avenue Armory strives to engage audiences with eclectic, immersive, and thought-provoking works that are in direct dialogue with the Armory’s unconventional spaces, whether it is the soaring Wade Thompson Drill Hall or the intimate period rooms. And with its pristine acoustic and austere elegance, the Board of Officers Room is like no other in offering the chance to enjoy the art of the recital and music-making in the most personal of settings.

The 2019 season marks the seventh year of the recital series, which continues to showcase both classical and contemporary repertoire performed by world-class artists at the height of their craft. We were thrilled to introduce to North American audiences the esteemed baritone Benjamin Appl, who made his North American recital debut in January with a unique residency exploring the extraordinary emotional depths of the human psyche found in the three published song cycles of Franz Schubert. And before making his U.S. operatic debut at Santa Fe Opera in summer 2019, Austrian tenor Ilker Arcayürek made his North American recital debut in February with a program of Schubert Lieder after emerging as one of the most exciting and versatile vocal artists in recent years following impressive debuts on opera and recital stages throughout Europe. September brought the esteemed ensemble, the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam, to the Armory for their New York debut, with two programs focusing on works by Haydn and Ligeti that artfully showcased their versatility and superb musicianship. Most recently, soprano Barbara Hannigan returned to the Recital Series to give the New York premiere of John Zorn’s Jumalatteret with pianist Stephen Gosling and a Schoenberg program with the famed Emerson String Quartet, which The New York Times referred to as an “astonishing performance.”

On deck for the start of the 2020 Season: Italian soprano Rosa Feola, who made her Met Opera debut this spring as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, partners with pianist Iain Burnside in January for a program of works by Martucci, Liszt, Resphighi, and Pinsuti; and soprano Gabriella Reyes and mezzo-soprano Megan Esther Grey will be featured on the Metropolitan Opera’s “The Lindemann Recital,” slated for February.

For the final recital of 2019, violin virtuoso and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Leila Josefowicz curates an inventive program of modern music paired with pieces by 20th-century masters that have never sounded so contemporary in performances that will be breathtaking in their daring and excitement.

This year’s lineup offered audiences even more chances to enjoy the intimacy of a beautiful range of chamber music experiences performed by artists with a highly distinctive international profile, in one of the only spaces that could provide such a personal encounter — the Board of Officers Room. ABOUT THE PROGRAM Stravinsky composed his Duo Concertante (1932) shortly after the Violin Concerto. Both works were written for the same violinist, Samuel Dushkin. Dushkin and Stravinsky premiered the Duo in Berlin on October 28, 1932.

The virtuosic opening “Cantilène” is followed by two “eclogues” (alluding to ancient Greek pastoral poetry), the first of which (movement 2) echoes of the musettes from Bach's suites, while the second (movement 3) is expansively melodic.

After an exciting Gigue, the final dithyrambe (song of jubilant praise) is characterized by an almost romantic lyricism that is very rare in Stravinsky.

Of the Janáček works on our program, the Dumka (1880) is a product of the period when, after working for years as a teacher and choral conductor in Brno, Janáček decided to embark on a serious study of composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. The title Dumka references a type of wistful Slavic folk melody that was dear to Janáček's older contemporary Antonín Dvořák. Janáček re-imagined the dumka as a glorified salon piece; however, the work surprises by some sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic turns, and some unexpected emotional outbursts.

The Violin Sonata (completed 1921) is a work of Janáček's mature years, and shows the hallmarks of the composer's unmistakable personal style in which short motifs, repeated over and over again in an unchanged form, play an important part. The sonata was premiered in Brno in 1922, by violinist František Kudláček and pianist Jaroslav Kvapil.

The sonata, composed over many years, is in four movements: a terse and dramatic opening; a lyrical and expressive “Ballad” (possibly composed as early as 1908); a scherzo, punctuated by violent trills and harsh dissonances; and a complex finale whose elegiac first theme is, once again (but not quite like before), inspired by the dumka.

Reflection (Op. 31a, 2016) is Knussen's penultimate work, which he described in these words:

This lyrical “morceau de salon”— written for Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Huw Watkins and dedicated to them — is made up of various kinds of musical reflection: melody reflected in its inversion; a six-note mode reflected in its complement; and between the three main parts of the piece, which are in a way varied reflections of each other.

There are some reflections in water, too: the main melody began as a response to Gauguin’s painting of a Breton woman swimming; and there is also, perhaps, an echo of the lonely underwater world of an ondine, eventually breaking the surface at the end of the piece.

Kurtág's Tre Pezzi (“Three Pieces,” Op. 14e, 1979) are arrangements of a set of short pieces originally inspired by a visit to a Waldorf school in Herdecke, Germany, where music teacher Gerhard Beilharz had the eurhythmics classes accompanied by a small lyre. Kurtág wrote a total of three sets of short pieces collectively called Herdecker-Eurythmie, in remembrance of this experience. We will hear the second of the three sets, with movements titled “Öd und traurig” [“Desolate and Sad”]; “Vivo”; and “...aus der Ferne...” [“... from a distance...”]). In the original version with lyre, the second set bore the subtitle Small Edifying Concertos for Theo and Gerhard. Kurtág isolates small rhythmic figures that might be used in eurhythmics and takes a deep look inside them, either by greatly slowing them down, as in the first and the last movements or speeding them up, as in the middle movement.

The violin-piano version was dedicated to two Hungarian musicians, Judit Hevesi and István Kerekes.

Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Piano (1927) was written for George Enescu, the great Romanian composer-violinist who had been Ravel's fellow student at the Paris Conservatoire. It became universally famous (and, in some quarters, infamous) for its central movement, “Blues.” Ravel had been fascinated by jazz for the better part of a decade and, unlike some conservative critics, did not think that jazz was incompatible with European classical music. His “Blues” is a perfect rendition of the typical melodic and harmonic turns of the genre, albeit with a slight French twist.

The American influence is by no means restricted to this movement. In the opening “Allegretto,” there is a motif consisting of a single note and repeated in a striking rhythmic pattern: one recent commentator described it as “a mischievously percussive little figure from the same ragtime background as Debussy’s Minstrels.” The development of these two distinct musical ideas is kept fairly simple throughout.

Towards the end of the movement a soaring violin melody is superimposed on the materials heard previously, to restore the music to the idyllic state of the beginning.

On the other side of the “Blues” movement is a finale in perpetual motion that brings back some motifs from earlier movements such as the ragtime-like figure from the “Allegretto” and one of the characteristic licks from the “Blues.” The uninterrupted sixteenth-notes of the violin start in a restricted melodic range, but they soon expand to include wider and wider arpeggios and higher and higher positions on the instrument. The energy constantly increases, all the way to the end.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS LEILA JOSEFOWICZ

An outstanding champion of contemporary music, Leila Josefowicz is the chosen interpreter of several leading composers including the late Oliver Knussen, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Steven Mackey, Matthias Pintscher, and Luca Francesconi.

Highlights of Josefowicz’s 2019/20 season include opening the London Symphony Orchestra’s season with Sir Simon Rattle and returning to San Francisco Symphony with the incoming Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen to perform his Violin Concerto. Further engagements include concerts with Los Angeles Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, where she will be working with conductors at the highest level, including Susanna Mälkki, Matthias Pintscher, and John Adams.

Alongside pianist John Novacek, with whom she has enjoyed a close collaboration since 1985, Josefowicz has performed recitals at world-renowned venues such as New York’s Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Washington's Kennedy Center, and London’s Wigmore Hall, as well as in Reykjavik, Chicago, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. This season, they appear together at Washington's Library of Congress, New York’s Park Avenue Armory, and Amherst College. She will also join Thomas Adès in recital to perform the world premiere of his new violin and piano work at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Japanese premiere at the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation.

Recent highlights include engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra, TonhalleOrchester Zürich, and Boston and Finnish Radio symphony orchestras. In summer 2017, Josefowicz appeared at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and London’s Royal Albert Hall at the BBC Proms with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

Pianist John Novacek regularly tours the Americas, Europe, and Asia as solo recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist; in the latter capacity he has presented over thirty concerti with dozens of orchestras.

Following a summer filled with re-engagements at major festivals throughout the United States and Canada, his current season is highlighted by his debut with Peter Bay and the Austin Symphony Orchestra and returns to Massachusetts’ Springfield Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Kevin Rhodes, and Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México, conducted by Scott Yoo. Novacek continues his collaborative work with violinist Leila Josefowicz, performing at Amherst College, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York City’s Park Avenue Armory, and Washington’s Library of Congress and Phillips Collection.

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create, students to explore, and audiences to enjoy epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City. The Armory also offers a substantial arts education program to over 5,000 students a year from underserved New York City public schools at no cost. The components include Production-based Programming, in which students attend major productions of music, theater, dance, and visual art, and participate in pre- and post-visit workshops with the Armory’s talented corps of teaching artists; the School Partnership Initiative, in which deeper relationships with underserved public schools are created through attendance at productions, in-school residencies, workshops, and end-of-term events in the Armory’s historic rooms; and the Armory Youth Corps, a paid and closely mentored internship program focusing on at-risk high school students.

Park Avenue Armory is one of the City’s most important landmarks. Built between 1877 and 1881, the Armory has been called “the single most important collection of 19th-century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel-vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is being restored and renovated by a design team led by Pritzker Prize–winning architects Herzog & de Meuron with Platt Byard Dovell White Architects as executive architects.

As part of its educational programming, the Armory will premiere its next commission for young audiences from The Electric Doyenne trilogy by Trusty Sidekick Theater Company.

The Gospel Electric, intended for families and children ages 10 and up, explores the musical coming of age of renowned female gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and her navigation of a segregated, male driven, and spiritually overbearing society. In 1939, evangelical Christians and gospel music listeners had decided Tharpe had lost her way: her music was too risqué and her sound was too cavalier. Yet, somehow, this young woman from Cotton Plant, Arkansas, stitched together a musical palette of Mississippi Delta, Chicago blues, Philadelphia church music, and New York swing to create an entirely new sound, and in the process, became the most renowned musician of the day and is considered by many to be the “Godmother of Rock’ n’ Roll.” Combining original songs as well as motifs and songs from Tharpe herself, The Gospel Electric asks the question, “who decides what ‘holy’ sounds like?”

MONTEVERDI’S MARIA VESPERS march 21–29, 2020

The magnificent Marian Vespers are one of Claudio Monteverdi’s greatest musical achievements. Monteverdi, the first composer to develop opera to its full dramatic and musical potential, breathed new life into the religious music of his day, combining traditional composition style with a modern, free way of setting words to music that led to the creation of musical theater. This monumental work written in 1610 will be performed in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, directed by the Armory’s Marina Kellen French Artistic Director, Pierre Audi, in a fresh visual and spatial interpretation, first presented by the Dutch National Opera at the Holland Festival in 2017. The production was developed in collaboration with Belgian artist Berlinde de Bruyckere with her massive, haunting Cripplewood sculpture that suggests vulnerability and fragility of man, as the central visual element. leads the world-renowned orchestra and choral ensemble, Pygmalion as it performs this ambitious and inspiring tour de force, using period instruments, to create a sonic kaleidoscope set in a spellbinding ritualistic gathering.

HISTORIC INTERIORS TOURS

Get an insider’s look at the Armory with a guided walking tour of the building with our staff historian. Explore from the soaring 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall to the extraordinary interiors designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Herter Brothers, and others, and learn about the design plans by acclaimed architects Herzog & de Meuron.

MALKIN LECTURE SERIES

Each fall, the popular Malkin Lecture Series presents scholars and experts on topics relating to the Armory and the civic, cultural, and aesthetic life of New York City in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lecture topics have ranged from history makers like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to Gilded Age society’s favorite restaurants and the Hudson River painters.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

Launched in 2010, the Armory’s artist-in-residence program supports artists across genres in the creation and development of new work. Each artist sets up a studio in one of the Armory’s period rooms, providing a unique backdrop that can serve as both inspiration and as a collaborator in their project development. Residencies also include participation in the Armory’s arts education program with artists working closely with the Armory’s Youth Corps interns. Current artists-inresidence include playwright and screenwriter Lynn Nottage; vocalist and composer Sara Serpa; set designer Mimi Lien; set designer and director Christine Jones and choreographer Steven Hoggett; playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and performance artist Carmelita Tropicana; social practice artist Theaster Gates; and choreographer and Flexn dance pioneer Reggie “Regg Roc” Gray.

ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM “The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.”

– The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the-art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing.

The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom-designed furniture.

The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $215-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.
