Why is it important to vote?

What voting in America really means

Zartasha Sani Editor In the 2014 midterm elections, only 22 percent of millennials who were eligible turned out to vote. The United States trails behind many other developed nations when it comes to voter turnout.

Demographically, people ages 18-26 are the least inclined to vote. So why is it now more important to vote than ever? Because not voting hurts students, minorities and the younger generation in the long run.

According to the Pew Research Center, Generation X and younger generations like millennials make up a clear majority of eligible voters (135 million), but cast 21 million fewer votes than older generations in the 2014 midterm elections. People aged 54 and older cast 57 million votes, whereas only 36 million votes were cast by people 53 and younger, even though they make up a larger portion of the population. The first and most important reason to vote is to accurately reflect the voice of the nation and its people.

If it feels like the government doesn’t understand and reflect the sentiments of the majority of its people,that might be right.

The Electoral College was historically set up so the people could not directly vote for the leader, but instead vote for representatives who would then choose the best person for the job. Voting in America could mean expanding rights for LGBTQ+ people, getting better funding for military veterans and their healthcare, increasing accessibility and affordability to education for our kids, and providing a system of government that invests in its people instead of corporations.

Voting is a way to stand up and use our voices to bring change; to be able to peacefully assemble and protest, to be able to bear arms and even to practice any religion we see fit.

Voting means practicing the right to live and let live. Voting in America is crucial in bringing a voice to the voiceless. Voting in America has never been more important.

Take it from someone who has lived in the United States for 16 years and just earned the right to vote. My voice was never heard in the system because I was never considered a member of the system.

After working tirelessly and spending thousands of dollars to become a citizen, I plan on exercising my right to vote on November 6.

First responders at Final Fridays Carin Bublitz Editor-in-Chief Every year the town of Parkville hosts Final Fridays events, which celebrate the end of summer.

During these events the stores in the downtown area stay open late, painters line the sidewalks to paint pictures of the buildings downtown and community members set up tents with crafts, face painting, pottery making and activities for the children of the community.

For the last Final Fridays of the year, Parkville had a first responders appreciation night where the police and fire departments, and EMT workers had a great time with the people of the town.

Many of the first responders arrived in their official transportation and parked on the side of Min Street. They gave tours of their work vehicles to community members and children.

“There’s like stuff out that you can do; I like the firetruck because I get to go inside it and lift the helmet up,” said Lucas Ramon, age 7.

“The people in town can come and see our equipment, see what we do, and meet us and get to know us,” said Taylor Hill, South Platte Country Fire Department firefighter.

Most firefighters meet people during emergency situations, and that’s what made the event special, said Hill.

The South Platte County fire department was not the only group that showed up to this event, there was also an ambulance that children and adults in the community could tour.

“We’re here for the community appreciation,” said EMT James Dir. “Everyone comes down and can go through the ambulance if they want to; we give out coloring books and things.”

Final Fridays also had live music performed

by Chris Cardwell. He performed fan favorites while sitting outside of Frank’s Restaurant with his guitar case open accepting donations and selling his new CD. As the night came to a close, the artists packed up their paint brushes and easels while saying a final goodbye to summer until next year when Final Fridays will start again.

Park International Club creates a home away from home for international students Zartasha Sani Reporter Park International Club is a student organization at Park University that plans events, holds weekly meetings and raises awareness for inclusion of international and domestic students.

It was started by Ikem Eriobuna when he was an undergraduate student. The club aims to help international students acclimate to a new environment, whether it is their first time at a university or their first time in the United States.

“My mission statement is to make the United States feel like home to our Park international students and our domestic students as well,” said Eriobuna.

Eriobuna is the president of the club and is now pursuing his master’s degree in business administration. When he first moved to the U.S., Eriobuna did not know anyone and had a hard time getting acquainted with his environment and school.

His goal with the club is to make sure no one else feels the same way.

Every year, PIC holds an international education week at Park University to entertain, educate and inform the Park community about international culture. Throughout the week there are several different events such as lectures, dance parties, movie nights and, finally, the international festival which is held in the underground.

“We celebrate that Park touches every aspect of our globe;

that the experiences of the world have a place in our community, and that we are richer as a result,” said Park President Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., at last year’s international festival.

For Michael House, a student advisor and international program coordinator, being involved in the PIC was a way to help international students have a voice on campus.

“I have always had a heart for internationalization,” said House. “I am getting to meet people from all over the world and help our international students have a voice on campus.”

PIC has already hosted events like a trip to the Plaza Art Fair, a welcome back bonfire, and a fundraiser. In the future they are planning an international education week, as well as a welcome back bash for the spring semester.

Park celebrates National Day on Writing for first time Abby Jeans Editor The National Day on Writing is Saturday, Oct. 20. Founded 10 years ago by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), this day is to celebrate and bring greater attention to writing.

This is the first year Park University is participating in the nationwide celebration, thanks to Associate Professor of English Amy Mecklenburg-Faenger, Ph.D., who also serves as the director of Park Writes. Park Writes is a university-wide writing across the curriculum program.

It focuses on improving writing and writing instruction across the university. This program involves both students and faculty members.

According to Mecklenburg-Faenger, WAC benefits students by preparing them for the working world. This program also helps and encourages international students and students from under-served populations who might not have strong writing skills. WAC requires professors to train and attend workshops to prepare them to teach writing across disciplines.

“It comes from a place of understanding that we all own writing,” said Mecklenburg--Faenger. “It’s a program designed to give both faculty and students more support and resources for engaging in writing.”

The NCTE is encouraging people to tweet why they write using the hashtag #WhyIWrite.

Park University students can get involved by sharing their reason for writing by using the hashtag #WhyParkWrites. When considering the question, Mecklenburg-Faegner admitted that she doesn’t actually like to write.

“I find it super painful; it’s hard,” she said. “But I like how it feels when I have written. I don’t like doing it, but finishing something big and seeing it in print feels pretty great.”

Because the national day on writing falls on a Saturday this year, Park University will be celebrating on Friday, Oct. 19. There will be a fair on the first floor of Thompson from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. featuring writing-related student organizations, writing games and activities.

Emotional Intelligence makes its way in the work place Skylar Britt Editor

Emotional intelligence is defined as the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

Companies are beginning to use this form of measurement in the interviewing process.

For example, Bank Midwest is capitalizing on the benefits EI provides. President of Bank Midwest and Chief Marketing Officer, NBH Bank, Whitney Bartelli, explained why EI is utilized in the organization.

“In a world where ‘human-ness’ is becoming increasingly important, the use of EI helps to distinguish one company from another,” said Bartelli. “Millennials in particular value the benefits of EI, and this segment of the population will be our largest in the coming decade.”

A resume cannot tell employers everything about a potential employee. While it does show relevant work experience, accomplishments and other qualifications, it does not provide information about the person’s beliefs, personality and ability to respond to

certain situations or stress. In order to see if a person will fit in well with the company, aside from what the resume tells, many businesses now require personality tests. While this form of testing is not currently being used at the bank, they are using EI in other ways.

“Teamwork is a core value in the company, so interpersonal skills and thoughtful collaboration are key requirements to getting work done,” said Bartelli. “The ability to understand another person’s point of view, respect their knowledge and leverage it to develop the best possible work is imperative in our organization.”

EI does not only reveal what kind of a person someone is under the surface, but also about how well they will seemingly fit in with a company’s culture. While there are many benefits of utilizing EI, one of the most important is the ability to work well with others.

“EI fosters stronger relationships and trust, which are key drivers to a healthy work culture and efficient work process,” said Bartelli. “EI eliminates many barriers in employee engagement and is evident with customers when exercised well internally.”

While EI is not new per say, it has not come into popularity until recent years.

Attributes such as individual power have fallen out of favor, allowing EI to come to the forefront. Not all companies engage in the practice of EI, or even understand and recognize the proper ways to use it for the company’s benefit.

“Companies who want to keep moving forward will use any tool available to attract and keep top talent,” said Debbie Sloan, an executive assistant at Bank Midwest. “Societal culture has changed in the past 40-50 years, shifting to a culture that better embraces the emotional and personality factor in the workforce. This is partly why personnel departments became known as human resource departments instead.”

Personality tests, leadership skills and conflict resolution models have been used in businesses for a long time. However, they are only now becoming standard in employment practice since the turn of the 21st century.

“EI is crucial when it comes to successful working relationships,” said Sloan. “Understanding how associates and clients will react

in certain situations helps associates to be better prepared, especially when trying to motivate associates and clients to do or not do certain things or act or react in a certain way.”

As EI grows in popularity and the success that comes as a result to it becomes more evident, it will inherently become more commonly used.

“As more and more companies and leaders truly learn and understand the principles of EI, I believe it will become more commonly used and frankly, more required to attract and retain employees and customers alike,” said Bartelli.

While it is important for companies to evaluate how qualified someone is to work within the organization, it is perhaps equally as important to assess how they are able to understand and control their emotions. It is better to prepare for this to become common practice in all areas of work now, rather than pushing it aside and allowing oneself to fall behind.

“EI is the next step in the evolution of the human factor in the workplace,” said Sloan.

Before being elected to the Senate, McCaskill was a courtroom prosecutor in Kansas City, a Jackson County Prosecutor and Missouri State Auditor.

Hawley calls himself a constitutional conservative. He has litigated at the Supreme Court and the federal court of appeals. He has previously fought against the Waters of the United States Rule and the Clean Power Plan because he believes these are overreaches of the federal government. He is an advocate for religious liberty and was one of the lead lawyers on the Hobby Lobby case. He was also a lead attorney in the Hosanna-Tabor case at the Supreme Court, which protected the right of churches.

There are also three other candidates running for the same senate seat. Japeth Campbell is the libertarian candidate, Jo Crain is the Green Party candidate and Craig O’Dear is

Congressman Sam Graves (R) is up for re-election in the House of Representatives this year as well. He is running against Henry Martin (D) and Dan Hogan (L) for the 6th Congressional District. Missouri currently has eight members in the U.S. House of Representatives, six of whom are Republicans.

Graves has represented Missouri’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. since 2001. He serves as Chairman of the House Subcommittee of Highways and Transit and is a member of the House Committee on Armed Services. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia and received his degree in Agronomy. Graves supports anti-abortion legislation, lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth and supports the repeal of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. This will be Martin’s first run for the senate. He is an Army veteran and served in the Persian Gulf for Operation Desert Shield as well as Operation Desert Storm. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Lincoln University. Martin is a proponent of the Second Amendment, but says it should be regulated in order to lessen the amount of gun violence. He supports the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s interpretation of the Second Amendment and its limits. He is pro-abortion rights because he believes family planning is a key to combating poverty. He is a proponent of an affordable secondary education. He believes in a modest tax raise in the top tax bracket to help fund secondary education and make college more affordable. Martin views the immigration problem from a perspective of reform and agrees that those seeking asylum should not

be treated as illegal aliens and believes in a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients while continuing to secure the border.

Hogan is running as an independent candidate. He served as a staff sergeant from 1998-2009 and active duty sergeant from 2009-2012. He graduated from the Community College of the Air Force, received a bachelor’s degree from Ashworth College in 2009, a bachelor’s degree from Peru State College and a master’s degree in Organization Management. He is personally anti-abortion, but his website states that he supports everyone’s individual rights when it comes to abortion. He believes that states should determine what is best for their schools and students. He supports the Second Amendment but is open to discussion on what the best way to reduce firearm violence could be.

The State Senate Race is comprised of Tony Luetkemeyer (R) and Martin T. Rucker II (D). Luetkemeyer is a fifth generation Missourian and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia to pursue law. He worked as an intern in the Domestic Policy Council under George W. Bush. He has also served on the University of Missouri Board of Curators to help keep college tuition low for students. Finally, he was a clerk for a Missouri Supreme Court Judge. He believes in keeping taxes low for Missouri families and businesses. He believes states should have more control over education. He supports term limits for statewide offices.

He is against sanctuary cities.

Rucker is also a fifth generation Missourian and a University of Missouri graduate. After college, Rucker was drafted to the Kansas City Chiefs and has also played for the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. Rucker then became a

union craftsman and joined the Heavy Construction Laborers Local 663. He currently works with Kissick Construction Company as a project engineer. He wants to work on healthcare reform because he feels that Missourians deserve affordable healthcare.

He supports the expansion of Medicaid. His priority is supporting a plan which makes veterans’ healthcare a priority. He supports legislation that actively advances workers’ right to collectively bargain. He also supports legislation that punishes any kind of discrimination in the workplace. He supports public education, expanded funding for public education and transparency and accountability from charter schools.

House members are elected for twoyear terms and are up for re-election every even numbered year.

The Stylus interviewed both candidates to get their views on the issues that matter most to them. Their answers below were edited for length.

How would you describe yourself as a candidate?

Allred: I’m a small business owner.

I own seven small businesses with five restaurants, a bookkeeping company and a franchise company. Because of my entrepreneurial background, I’ve started businesses that have been very successful and some that haven’t been. I feel like my business acumen will serve me well in Jeff City. I have a history of job creation many candidates don’t have, and I have proven leadership skills as shown by the many boards I’m on and the leadership positions I have held.

Page 6 October 19, 2018 ness owner, so I have covered several campaigns, not just in the Kansas City area but also in Wisconsin, for around 10 years. I have also covered a couple of presidential campaigns, and I have been on the other side of the political system. After the 2016 election I thought I needed to get more involved because when I was a TV reporter, I kept a distance because I didn’t want to feel like I was biased against people I might be interviewing. No one was running for the position and after a couple of days of discussing it with friends of mine who I knew I would want on my campaign, and with my husband, they were all on board, and we wanted to do something. We love this area (Parkville) so much. I am the marketing director for Main Street Parkville and have spent time on the Chamber of Commerce. I understand the needs of business owners and what people want in downtown Parkville, and that’s why I decided to run.

If you could describe your campaign in one word, what would it be?

VA: Leadership.

MW: Connected.

What are some goals you hope to achieve if you are elected?

VA: I want to serve on the budget, small business and transportation committees. Our roads and bridges need repair and the legislature has often kicked the can down the road.

It is time to act before it gets too late.

We have restaurateurs and other small business that are only one bad 75-year-old bridge away from being isolated.

MW: We need to start on the local level and build up. People are choosing party over country. We need to make sure that our state is welcoming and that people want to move here and that we’re making it as easy as possible to register to vote and check

voter registration status. I think that the one thing that has frustrated me is when a representative says, “The majority of my constituents say this” but don’t give you any numbers. Politicians tend to hide behind lobbyists and there is never any data that backs any of their information up.

We need to make sure that they can explain why they are voting the way they are; you need to be voting with the majority of people who live in your district.

Where do you stand on education?

VA: Education is the most important part of a successful life.

While we need to find the funding, I support the full funding of a preschool program, elementary and secondary education. I’m also very big on vocational schools to provide apprenticeships and certifications for those wanting to learn a skill but might not be cut out for college.

MW: We need to make sure that all children are on a level playing field because education affects the rest of their lives. If the state legislature doesn’t fully fund not just public education but even higher education, then the universities have to increase tuition because they are not getting as much money as they have received in the past, and I think that we need to look at the debt-free model for higher education. Platte County needs an advocate for our schools in Jefferson City.

Where do you stand on healthcare?

VA: I support AHPs (Associated Health Plans) have worked for years to finally get them passed and signed by the President. Being able to pool thousands of people together to one plan will bring down costs. I also support removing obstacles for competi-

Healthcare is about the only thing we really don’t do comparative shopping on, and I think with more competition and people in the system, prices will naturally come down.

MW: We want to expand Medicaid and make sure that pre-existing conditions are covered. I also think lawmakers should have the same healthcare as everyone else. Everyone should be on a level playing field.

What’s something that most people wouldn’t know about you?

VA: I’m an open water certified scuba diver and am a certified shark feeder. I feed them with no cage, only a metal mesh sit covering my wet suit.

It’s pretty intense.

MW: I grew up on a farm, and we had two pet raccoons. We found them abandoned in our hay barn, and we fed them by bottle.

Chiefs determined to head to playoffs Dakota Soukup Reporter

The 2018-2019 National Football League season will be one to watch for Kansas City Chiefs fans. During the off season, the Chiefs traded quarterback Alex Smith, cornerback Marcus Peters and a few other players. Head coach Andy Reed is putting his trust in the new quarterback from Texas Tech, Patrick Mahomes.

“I know he’s excited to play,” said Reed in a September press conference. “He’s a pretty confident kid in his ability, and I think he just wants to get going and play the game.”

The Chiefs look to win the division for a third consecutive year and to get back to the post season. Reed and the Chiefs started their season against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chiefs put up 38 points against the strong defense of the Chargers and won the game, 38-28.

The following week, the Chiefs went to Pittsburg to play the Steelers at Heinz Field.

Mahomes put up 449 yards of total offense and six touchdowns. The Chiefs’ defense made a stand and the Chiefs won 42-37.

Over the next three games, Mahomes had two or more passing touchdowns and the

Chiefs scored 27 points or more in each game. The Chiefs scored a season high of 40 points against the New England Patriots last Sunday night.

The Chiefs started the season 5-0 for the second year straight, but the streak was snapped on Oct. 14. The Chiefs traveled to Gillette Stadium to play the New England Patriots. The Chiefs were down 24-9 after the first half of play. Mahomes didn’t look like his normal self, throwing two interceptions in the first half. When the Chiefs came out of the locker room after halftime, they played much differently. They scored 17 points in the third quarter to bring the lead to just one point. The fourth quarter looked to be a close one. It went back and forth; the Chiefs were down by seven with just over three minutes left in the game. Mahomes and the Chiefs got the ball and only needed one play to get those six points. Mahomes connected with wide receiver Tyreek Hill for a 75-yard touchdown. With just three seconds left in the game, the Patriots kicked a 28 yard field goal to win the game 43-40 and end the Chiefs undefeated season.

With the loss to the Patriots, the Chiefs are 5-1 and still on top of their division.

Next week, the Chiefs will back in Kansas City for their third home game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Park University men and women’s soccer teams on fire Dakota Soukup Reporter Women’s soccer Park University’s 2018-2019 Women’s soccer team is having a fantastic season, despite a loss on senior night against 19th-ranked Columbia College. The team is 9-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference.

Prior to the latest game, the Lady Pirates won seven straight games. In the seven-game win streak, the Pirates had a season high of 12 points against St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics.

Park freshman Lenvix Ochieng also won an American Midwest Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award. She earned this award in her seventh career game at Park University. Ochieng is ranked sixth in the NAIA for goals per game at 1.71.

Head coach Ken Hefner is in his 14th season with the Pirates and collected his 300th career victory on Sept. 29. He is now 300-198-22 all-time in his 26 years as head coach and is 159-78-12 at Par. That makes him the program’s all-time wins leader.

Men’s soccer Park University’s men’s soccer team had a rough start to their season, but is coming back strong with an overall record of 6-4-1. They’re 5-2-1 in the conference.

The season began with three straight losses but has been undefeated in their last five games, as of Oct. 16. They are averaging three goals a game and holding their opponents to less than two points per game in their 5-0 run.

During this streak, freshman Mohammed Ndaliro earned an American Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week award after recording a hat trick and two other goals in just six shots against Central Baptist.

The team was still playing Columbia College at the time of publishing. After that, there are two away games before the AMC Men’s Soccer Championship tournament.

Parks Student Activities Board hosts annual Park’s Got Talent event Students exposed their unique talents for prizes Zartasha Sani Reporter Students and faculty gathered at the Alumni Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 3, to support their peers at the Park’s Got Talent competition.

The diverse lineup included rapping, comedy, dancing and original songwriting. Students showcased their unique talents while judges determined who was the best.

First up was John Carrazco on guitar, singing “Down to the River” by Ben Caplan. Marquel Harris followed with an original song called “Show’s Over.” After Harris, DJ Occelin performed an original dance. Up next was Emily Raffety, who sang an acapella version of “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Sophomore Morgan Durham performed an original comedy routine.

Jack Gunderson performed an original

song on the guitar. Allison Anderson, also known as AA Diamond, rapped an original song.

The judges included Park University President Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., Park Student Government Association President Jesse Patrick and Assistant Director of Academic Support Florenda Jarrard.

The contestants were judged in three categories: best performance, audience favorite and most creative. The categories were broken down into talent, entertainment value, reception, crowd participation, originality of interpretation and showmanship.

Most creative was awarded to Anderson for her original rap. She won a $20 gift card. The audience favorite was awarded to Occelin with a $30 gift card. The best performance award went to Carrazco, and he received a $50 gift card.
