Constitution day brings voting reform lecture Carin Bublitz Editor-in-chief Park University held its annual Constitution Day Lecture featuring Larry Bradley, an election reform advocate and author. Bradley presented his lecture, “The Culprit is not the Constitution: Why the Majority of Voters are dissatisfied with Government,” on September 20 in Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel at the Parkville campus.

Bradley began with a joke that made the rest of his lecture seem light hearted, but also serious. His lecture focused on teaching students at Park University to fix voting problems in the United States.

The point of the lecture was to inform the community of the role United States citizens have in an election. Citizens could fix the issue of plurality winners in elections by, as Bradley said, “going to ranked choice voting because ranked choice voting will always give you a majority winner.” This winner would then influence public policies to reflect the

will of the majority of the voters.

He believes this system would work in the United States because, “it’s already working other places, it’s just that we don’t know to ask for it.”

Bradley gave a few examples of this system working in other places, most notably, in San Francisco, Calif. He provided detailed graphs and charts showing the process by which an election winner would be chosen using the ranked choice voting system.

After the lecture there was a short question and answer period where students, faculty and community members could ask questions. One question regarding the effect of ranked choice voting for minority groups piqued attention and interest.

“I like that it brought up some interesting questions,” said Maggie Turner, political science senior. “There were a lot of questions about minority rights with the right choice voting, and how minorities would be affected and how they would be represented.”

Pantry brings nutrition to those in need Kalie Strain Photographer

Park has opened a food pantry for students in Labor Hall. For those who haven’t been to Labor Hall before, it is the brick building between the Breckon Sports Center domes and the Copley Quad dormitory.

The pantry is open Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. or by appointment through emailing pantry@park.edu.

“We decided to go with the USDA nutritional guidelines. We’re hoping that students will improve their nutrition and access to nutritional foods as a result of visiting the pantry,” said Debra Olson-Morrison, Ph.D., an assistant professor of social work. Olson-Morrison, Dean of Students Jayme Uden, Ed.D.

and social work students have all worked together to turn the pantry from an idea to a reality.

“When they come, they get three servings of each food group,” Olson-Morrison said. “That assists students in keeping a balanced diet.”

When visiting the pantry students will be asked for their student ID number. This information won’t be distributed. It’ll be used to track how often the pantry is used in general.

The pantry will be supervised by two volunteers during open hours. These volunteers will be a faculty or staff member, or a graduate student.

The joke about college students is that all they eat are microwavable instant ramen noodles. This isn’t that far from the truth. Researchers from Temple University found that 36 percent of students at

the 66 colleges and universities they surveyed don’t get enough to eat.

This means that at those 66 schools, more than one in three of the students weren’t eating enough.

A study by Katharine Broton and Sara Goldrick-Rab found that students who don’t get enough to eat are 22 percent less likely to earn a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0.

Park has decided to take a step in helping students overcome this obstacle.

Welcome aboard! Park adds a dozen new faculty members

Park University welcomed 12 new faculty members for the 2018-19 academic year. Read on to learn more about these new professors and instructors. Photos by Zartasha Sani.

Background: Bachelor’s degree in English and an M.F.A in creative writing and media arts from University of Missouri-Kansas City From Kansas City, Missouri Handley enjoys writing fiction and creative nonfiction as well as watching a lot of movies.

She was an adjunct before being hired full time at Park University.

She is looking forward to being on campus more and getting involved with campus life, sports and university events.

Brandi Handley Lecturer, English

Background: Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science in China Ph.D. in computer science from Florida International University.

From Xi’an, China; spent five years in Miami, Florida.

Wang’s research interests include computer security, computer network, data management and processing, and program analysis.

He enjoys playing the guitar and likes sports like basketball, ping pong, soccer and tennis.

He is looking forward to setting up a new concentration for the department in cyber security.

Yonghzi Wang, Ph.D. Assistant professor in computer science

Background: Bachelor’s degree in interior design from Mount Mary University Master’s degree in interior architecture from Chatham University More than 10 years as a professional interior designer focusing on hospitality environments at various corporate and architectural firms in the Milwaukee, Chicago and Los Angeles areas.

Sherrodd is a current member of the Interior Design Educators Council and has been an interior design educator for the last eight years.

She is from Wisconsin but has lived in Southern California for 11 years.

She enjoys the outdoors – hiking and gardening – as well as attending concerts Roxann O’Rourke-Sherrodd and music festivals.

She is looking forward to working Assistant professor, art, design and interwith students and exposing them to new disciplinary aspects of interior design.

She is most excited about getting back into the classroom and for the leaves to Cynthia Cerrentano, Ph.D. change for the fall. She says that Park Associate professor of psychology in inUniversity is beautiful and makes her dustrial/organizational psychology and feel like she is working in a place on a sociology postcard.

CAMPUS LIFE PSGA Elections Abigail Jeans Editor The first week of September marked the annual Park Student Government Association election for freshman and upperclassman senators. With five new members on board, PSGA looks forward to the year ahead.

Jesse Patrick, junior computer science major and PSGA president, said he sees great opportunities with the newly-elected senators.

“I feel like they have a lot of potential,” said Patrick. “It also makes our group more diverse which is good for the senate.”

While PSGA officers and senators work together, the organization is made up of small committees. These committees include research and development, environment, student life, tech fee, bylaws and budget.

Sarah Zitter, senior international relations major and PSGA secretary, is especially ex-cited to get the new members plugged in with their committees.

“It’s really cool that we work as a group as a whole, but then we have smaller commit-tees,” said Zitter. “Even within the group it still gets narrowed down to what people are really able to bring to the table which is super cool because we get to utilize everyone’s different talents and interests.”

Before joining their committee, PSGA members choose two areas they are most interested in. From there the executive board decides where each member will best fit.

Students who are not PSGA senators also have the opportunity to join these commit-tees.

“If there is an area that interests students they can still take part in the committee without being a part of PSGA,” said Zitter. “So if a student is interested in environmental is-sues on campus they can come and be a part of the meetings

that the environmental committee holds and be involved in the different projects and events they put on.”

As a whole, the organization is really focusing on student involvement and defining what PSGA is. This is something Patrick is passionate about and looks forward to working on this year.

“We are trying to make people understand what PSGA is here for,” said Patrick.

“In the past we have been mistaken for the Park Student Activities Board, so we are really trying to make that definition and help students understand that we are here to be the students’ voice to the university.”

PSGA also helps to provide funding for different clubs and organizations.

In the past they have helped clubs host events and provide the funds to go to conferences.

A long-term project that has been in discussion by PSGA involves bringing renewable energy to Park, starting with the newly renovated McCoy Meetin’ House.

“We would be using solar panels to create energy rather than using KC Power and Light to get electricity,” said Patrick. “We might start the process, but it will probably take some time to get this project going.”

The organization is also focusing on smaller projects including the accessibility of PSGA to more non-traditional students. Zitter believes the students who are most involved live on campus because they are more aware of what is going on.

“We are here to represent the entire student body, so we want to hold more town halls, surveys and events that would reach out to people who might only have classes in a certain area on campus, or live off campus, or even ones who don’t fit the traditional age range, and still show them what we have to offer is still valuable to them and their education here at Park,” said Zitter.

This outreach to non-traditional students follows Patrick’s goal of getting stu-

dents involved and breaking the habit of just showing up and doing school work.

“We want to break that mold,” said Patrick. “I’d rather students come and interact with other students and make connections that they might not have been able to if they didn’t reach out outside the classroom. We’re going to try the best we can to have a more connected student body.”

Zitter also encourages students to get involved:

“We are only as successful as the student body allows us to be. The more needs that you express to us, the more work we can do to try to help.”

Get involved by joining PSGA on September 27 at 3 p.m. in the McCoy Meetin’ House for a town hall meeting. President Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., will be at the meeting sharing his plans for the 20182019 school year and chatting with students.

Speech and Debate Team Set to Take Stage Skylar Britt Editor Park University’s new speech and debate team is working hard to prepare for the upcoming October 6 tournament in Manhattan, Kan. This is the first tournament for the team since the early 1900s—the last time the school had an active speech and debate team was before WWI shifted the focus to theater and entertainment.

The new team is comprised of eight members. This exceeded the goal that was set by Associate Professor of Communication Lora Cohn, Ph.D. As the faculty adviser, she was hoping for six members. Cohn, along with adjunct communication instructor Chris Thomas, are the directors of speech and debate and worked to revamp the longtime dormant club to not only provide the students with a great experience, but to also allow for a learning experience that cannot be found in a classroom.

“You learn things in speech and debate that will help in life,” said Cohn. “You are more articulate, become a better critical thinker, are able to quickly generate ideas, and speed up thinking which aides in interviews and the job field.”

Park University President Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., initiated the revamping of the club to ensure Park students are offered the same experience he had during the time he was involved in college.

“There is a real level of support here that’s unusual in other universities,” said Cohn. “Usually they are wanting to cut the program rather than fund and start a team. This is a special time and place because this opportunity doesn’t come along everyday.”

Having debated at Truman State University herself, and even marrying her debate partner,

“I try to not allow myself to get nervous,” said Raw. “I usually only get about two to three hours of sleep before the event and combat that with a lot of coffee. The trick is to not think about how nervous you are and focus on the event.”

For anyone considering joining the speech and debate team, Raw offers some advice to aid in the decision.

“As long as you are willing to put in a lot of work—as much as you would with a sports team— then absolutely do it,” said Raw. “It’s a great community. Talking to debaters and others involved in the community allows you to form strong and lasting friendships. It teaches you a lot about life and public speaking.”

Cohn also encourages the decision to join the club for the many opportunities it provides.

“Literally anyone is welcome on the team,” said Cohn. “I didn’t want to discourage people from joining, I just wanted to give the experience of this club. We meet every Wednesday for one hour, and then I individually meet with each of the members for an additional hour later in the week. I wanted to make it more student-working friendly so it doesn’t become overwhelming.”

As of now, the team is budgeted to go to three tournaments in the Fall and three in the Spring. However, after the first year, the budget and number of tournaments each semester may increase. For now, the team has its sights set on the opening tournament which will allow them to both gauge their success and let the other universities know they are here to compete.

It got me through grad school because it allowed me to think quicker and write papers faster. I probably would have outright failed in my first year of teaching if it wasn’t for this. I was able to problem solve quickly and not seem flustered when I really was.

Dr. Cohn, Associate Professor of Communication Cohn attributes much of her success to the experience.

“It got me through grad school because it allowed me to think quicker and write papers faster,” said Cohn. “I probably would have outright failed in my first year of teaching if it wasn’t for this. I was able to problem solve quickly and not seem flustered when I really was.”

Many different types of majors are represented, including Hailey Raw, a sophomore history major. With three years experience under her belt, she is continuing her research and putting the final touches together for the upcoming tournament.

“In high school, I needed a speech requirement so I chose debate, and I fell in love with it,” said Raw. The years spent in the club also brought along many tournaments and wins.

“Winning is my favorite,” said Raw. “The brutal wins. I love when you know you’re better and the opponent knows you’re better.”

There are many different events to compete in such as limited prep debate, extemporaneous speaking, IE, known as individual events, and Lincoln-Douglas debate, which is a single person debate.

“My favorite event now is improv,” said Raw. “You are given about two minutes to write a five-minute speech. With the little time to prepare and practice, you get an adrenaline rush which is good for improving your quick reflex skills.”

This inherently brings along a lot of nerves and stress. Much like any job or career one faces, the success is often found in how one choses to react and handle the stress. Raw has found the perfect formula for her to remain calm before and during the debates.

Study Abroad: Study New Zealand Skylar Britt It is true that classrooms provide an Editor abundance of knowledge. However,

some things cannot be taught within the confines of the school walls.

Many lessons are best learned with hands on expe-riences, much like what a study abroad trip can provide.

For senior Lyndsey Fowks, an extended trip to New Zealand was the most beneficial route in her journey to earn her interdisciplinary studies major in global sustainability and natural science. Leaving in February and not returning until June, the trip provided not only breathtaking views and experiences, but also educational courses unique to the country.

“Educationally, I learned a lot more than I could have learned here if I took similar clas-ses,” said Fowks. “I learned about Antarctica, which Park does not have any courses on current-ly. I took classes that were specific to New Zealand which taught me about their geology, geog-raphy, native plants and animals first hand, and really just learned what it is like to be an interna-tional student in general.”

Having already traveled to Australia, Iceland, Egypt, Amsterdam, Ireland, England, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Belize, Honduras, Mexico, Canada and Hawaii, Fowks wanted to explore a new destination to add to her already impressive list.

“New Zealand is the most beautiful country I have ever been to,” said Fowks. “I loved being in that community and meeting people from around the world while bonding with them. It’s perfect because I love the outdoors and being with friends.”

The four roommates Fowks shared her time with were from Boston, Connecticut, Nor-way and New Zealand. Living with a local allowed for a more in-depth view of the country as he was able to show the main points of interest.

“I hate being a tourist,” said Fowks. “It was amazing living with them. We were insepa-rable. We wanted to create a community where we lived. After our classes, we would drive to see as much as we could. On the weekends, we would travel around the south island which is known for adventure.”

Surrounded by the Southern Alps Mountains, the island provides views that are un-matched by many. Fiordland National Park, Mt. Cook, Sumner, Sumner National Park and Kai-koura were only a few of the places Fowks and her roommates explored.

“We hiked eight miles to go to the hot spring in Sumner National Park, and we were in an earthquake in Kaikoura,” said Fowks. “I was excited to be able to experience an earthquake here because they have them all the time so I wanted to encounter it for myself.

I was laying in bed asleep when my bed started to shake and when I ran into the hallway, everyone was acting nor-mal because it was a 4.2 on the scale which is very common for the area.”

While earthquakes are quite common in some areas of the United States, they are

a usual occurrence in the Midwest, making it an exciting experience. This was only one of the few dif-ferences Fowks noticed during her stay in the country.

“It’s a very quiet culture, not in a meek way but in a very respectable way,” said Fowks. “New Zealanders have an interesting sense of humor. It’s dry and blunt. They have a very chill demeanor but are also hard workers with high standards. The school was hard, maybe harder than here. Universities are very prestigious—not everyone goes. They value trade schools more and the health care is amazing. Politics aren’t discussed as much, and I found they were more understanding and open to opinions.”

Fowks didn’t allow herself to prepare for the trip too much before taking off on the plane. Limiting her research on the country allowed many of the experiences to come more as a surprise.

“I tried to not have a lot of expectations going in,” said Fowks. “I wanted to go in with an open mind and not have a list of things I wanted to do upon arrival, because then I wouldn’t feel like I was missing anything if I didn’t get to see it.”

However, she was familiar with aspects such as the beauty, geography and level of crime, which also aided in her decision to study there.

“The crime rate is low,” said Fowks. “Upon arrival, there is a meeting that informs every-one about the New Zealand laws. The drinking age is 18 and the cops don’t carry lethal weapons. A cop I spoke with said he didn’t want to take the job if the decision of whether or not a person lived or died was in their hands.”

Because of the low crime rate, actions found to be worrisome or taboo in the U.S. are ra-ther typical in NZ.

“I had to hitch hike twice out of necessity,” said Fowks. “Hitch hiking is huge there so if something happens, you’re never stranded. I didn’t have a car there but traveling was never an issue.”

For those considering taking the opportunity to travel to a different country to continue their studies, Fowks provides insight based on her own experiences.

“Do it; study abroad,” said Fowks. “You need to be okay with change but you should do it. It gave me lifelong friends that I video chat all the time. We are all going to take a trip togeth-er this winter to either Salt Lake City or Spain.”

Park University is a member of the CCIS study abroad program, allowing students to choose from locations nearly anywhere in the world to study. With many financing options and scholarship opportunities, the study abroad trip can be about the same price as a semester here on campus, depending on the chosen country. More details can be provided by the Office of Inter-national Education in Herr House.

“It was a very empowering experience,” said Fowks. “I feel like I can travel most places now on my own.”

A Simple Favor Movie Review Creates its own comedic genre thriller Zartasha Sani Reporter “A Simple Favor” combines wit, humor and suspense with an exciting plot which includes two strong female leads. It is based on a novel by Darcey Bell, directed by Paul Feig and based on a screenplay by Jessica Sharzar.

Feig is known for directing movies like “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat” and the “Ghostbusters” remake.

It stars Blake Lively, who is probably best recognized for her role as Serena van der Woodson on the CW series “Gossip Girl”. The other female lead is Anna Kendrick who is known for her breakout role in the “Pitch Perfect” trilogy. The movie also stars Henry Golding, who also recently played the lead in “Crazy Rich Asians.”

The plot of the movie revolves around Emily Nelson (Lively), a glamorous and larger-than-life public relations director for a large fashion company. Nelson befriends fellow mom Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) who runs her own online vlog about motherhood, crafts and recipes. Nelson’s life looks perfect from the outside, but when Smothers gets an inside glimpse, nothing is as it seems.

Behind the glamorous career, the handsome husband, the big house and fancy cars, Nelson hides a shocking secret. Days after befriending Smothers, Nelson suddenly disappears. When Smothers tries to find out more information about her missing friend, she realizes she has bargained for more than she could imagine.

This movie kept me on the edge of my seat through its entirety. Every time I thought I had

figured out the plot, there was another twist. It was like peeling an onion; the movie had so many layers, but it was engaging and kept the audience guessing up until the very last minute.

Lively and Kendrick’s characters were extremely interesting because they reflected different types of women and powerful female dynamics. Kendrick’s character was an eccentric single mother and a widow who owned her own online business.

Lively’s character was an unapologetic, strong female who was the breadwinner of her family and defied traditional gender roles. It was refreshing to see two female leads that weren’t fighting over a man or love but are battling their own demons and trying to make a better life for their children by any means necessary.

This movie was not quite a thriller and not quite a comedy. If there was a genre to categorize “A Simple Favor,” it would be a comedic thriller. The comedy was sarcastic and dry and a welcome break from the usual brand of comedy which depends on making fun of others. Even in moments of suspense, action or uncertainty there was a strong sense of humor.

This is a unique thriller because it displayed different types of parenting styles, a diverse cast, an interracial couple and defied almost every stereotype.

Overall, this movie is 5 out of 5 stars. It is the type of movie that will make audiences laugh, gasp and keep them anticipating the next move. It includes adult themes and strong explicit language and is not suitable for anyone under 13. It is rated R. It runs 1 hour and 57 minutes.

Time capsule discovered in Copley

Copper time capsule box removed from Copley-Thaw cornerstone.

Carin Bublitz Editor-in-Chief After 25 years, Park University has unearthed another time capsule. This capsule was removed from the cornerstone of the Copley-Thaw building on the university’s Parkville campus in order to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the construction of the building.

On August 27, Carolyn McHenry Elwess, Park University archivist, and Timothy Westcott, Ph.D., associate professor of history and associate archivist, supervised Ryan Didier, MTS contractor, while he removed the capsule from the cornerstone.

“It’s pretty exciting, even for me. I know everyone around here is excited and the excitement is contagious,” said Didier.

When the cornerstone was removed, the copper box that contained history from 100 years ago fell into the hands of Didier. He handed it to Elwess and immediately she and everyone around her knew that something was wrong.

“What made me realize there might be something wrong with this box was

when we found out it was copper,” said Sara Lemke, public history senior. “If the lid is loose then there is something wrong with it.”

After the capsule was opened their suspicions were correct. All of the artifacts inside were damaged and had been exposed to water. This resulted in a clump of papers and books that had to be carefully pulled apart and stored in plastic sleeves. “When he handed it to me I felt the lid move and basically I knew right then and there that we were going to have damage to goods because moisture could easily have seeped into it, and that’s exactly what happened,” said Elwess.

Luckily, there was an article in the Stylus from 1918 that contained a list of all of the artifacts that had been included in the time capsule.

“I think it was nice that you did have the list of things that had been included. That probably helped identify some of those remains that had pretty much spoiled,” said Nancy Carlile, 1958 Park University alumna.

Once stored, these artifacts were placed in shadow boxes and transported to Copley Quad where they were to be

kept a secret until the viewing at the centennial celebration for the Copley-Thaw building.

The Centennial program took place on September 14 at 2 p.m. in the Copley Quad building on the last day of homecoming week. This was so alumni from all over the world would be able to view the contents of the time capsule.

During the program there were speeches given by Elwess, Ashley Weber, public history junior, and Greg Gunderson, Ph.D., Park University president.

Afterward, a reception was held with refreshments for students, alumni and faculty who wanted to stay and view the contents of the time capsule.

“This has been a real demanding project. It has been challenging, but we feel it is very well worth it, and we were glad we were able to share it at an event and we were glad so many people were interested,” said Elwess.

On long, white tables covered in red table cloths were the shadow boxes with a

New Testament bible, a university catalog from 1917 and 1918, a few pages from the Stylus student newspaper, and fragments of miscellaneous papers.

“That little New Testament Bible was really nice,” said Nona Richardson, 1958 Park University alumna.

In 2022, the next cornerstone will be ready to come out of the science building on the Parkville campus. It is unclear whether or not there is a time capsule in the cornerstone, but with a little research into copies of the Stylus from 1922 Elwess and her team will find out.

According to Elwess, time capsules, “are a curiosity in some ways, but normally it would reflect what was important at the time to the people who were putting things in it, and we are going to create another one for Copley.”

Until 2118 when the new Copley-Thaw time capsule is opened, you can view the current Copley-Thaw time capsule and its contents in Park University’s Underground outside of the Fishburn Archives.

New athletics staff member joins Park Dakota Soukup Reporter

Park University Athletics has added a new member to its staff. Tyler Price was named the assistant director of athletics for media relations and marketing in August. He has been in the sports information field for 10 years and has worked at two different schools.

Price, a 2008 graduate of Kansas State University, spent three years in the sports information department there as a student assistant. Along with assisting in the promotion of all 12 varsity sports at K-State, Price’s main responsibility was serving as the primary media contact for the women’s equestrian program.

After graduation, Price joined the sports information staff at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

After his time at the NAIA, Price served as assistant sports information director from 2008-2012 and as assistant women’s basketball coach from 2011-2012 at Park University.

Price later served as the assistant director of athletics - com-

munications at Baker University from 2012-2018. Price earned the 2017 NAIA Sports Information Director of the Year with Baker University.

He comes back to Park with great experiences from Baker and said he is excited to be back to where he believes is home.

Price said he decided to come back to Park because it is a great opportunity to work with Claude English, the director of athletics, and that he is familiar with the coaching staff from when he worked as an associate SID. Price said he believes the biggest difference transferring from Baker to Park will be that Park does not have a football team.

Baker had one of the top football teams in the NAIA, and he likes football so he anticipates that will be the hardest and biggest difference.

On the other hand, during his first day on the job, the women’s volleyball team received the number one ranking in the NAIA. He has never had a team first in the national rankings before so he said he is excited to promote and work with the volleyball program this year.

Parks soccer teams lose homecoming match

Athletic alumni return to Park for wall of fame induction Dakota Soukup Reporter

The eight people inducted this year were: Sinan Kunt – Men’s Soccer – 1961-1963 Park Athletics held a ceremony for its 2018 class of Sinan Kunt led the Pirates to their first ever NAIA wall of fame inductees. It was held on September 14 in National Championship appearance in 1962. Kunt was the Park University underground by the wall of fame. one of three Pirates named members of the 1962 NAIA There were eight inductees in the class of 2018. To be National Championship All-Tournament Team. eligible to be inducted into the wall of fame, the inductee Simon Mulama – Men’s Soccer – 2002-2006 must be individuals of outstanding quality, high moral Simon Mulama is a three-time NAIA All-American character and fine leadership qualities. for the Pirates and led one of the most potent teams in all of NAIA soccer in his time at Park.

Maria Ruiz – Women’s Soccer – 2004-2008 Maria Ruiz is an NAIA record-holder for her 109 career goals at Park. This mark held the NAIA top 10 at the conclusion of her career. She helped Park to the NAIA National Tournament in 2005 and 2006.

She was also an All-American in 2006. She ended her career with 209 goals, 34 assists and 256 points, before moving on to play professionally in EuAlumni pose with President Greg Gunderson and athletic director rope.

tain of the Pirates’ 1962 NAIA National tournament team while also competing in basketball, track and field, and tennis at Park. He went on to enjoy coaching, administration and athletic training careers that spanned parts of four decades.

Colleen Mahoney – Women’s Volleyball – 2005-2006 Colleen Mahoney is Park’s first NAIA All-American in women’s volleyball. She held the Park University record for single-season kills from 2006-2013, totaling 616 kills in the 2005 season, leading the conference, and another 548 in 2006.

Dale Lauritzen – Men’s Golf Coach – 1987-2001 Dale Lauritzen is the first golf coach to lead Park to the NAIA postseason. He took the Pirates to the National Championship twice as a team and once more with an individual, in 1976, 1980 and 1982.

Brian Maloney – Men’s Golf – 1979-1980 Brian Maloney was Park’s first ever All-American, in 1980, after qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament as an individual.

Ed Bradley – Meritorious Service Ed Bradley was part of the inaugural Park Athletics Wall of Honor committees. Bradley rarely missed a game. He was the university’s Torch lighter award winner in 2015, an honor given by the Park University Alumni Association to individuals who have made significant long-standing contributions and commitment to the University.

Womens volleyball team starts season undefeated Dakota Soukup Reporter The Park University women’s volleyball team is ranked first in the nation. They’ve had a perfect season so far, going 15-0 without losing a single set, as of September 26.

In their first tournament of the season at Columbia College, Park University had their work cut out for them with the previous number one school, Lindsey Wilson College, and fourth-ranked team, Viterbo University. The Pirates were up to the task and swept those opponents, plus two more, in that tournament in Columbia, Mo. There have been three players selected for AMC players of the week and two for the NAIA national players of the week. Nada Meawad, AMC attacker of the week, Celina Monteiro, defender of the week, and Danna Gomes, setter of the week during the week of August 26 through September 1. Nada Meawad and Celina Monteiro were the NAIA national players of the week.

The Pirates will be back in action at home in the Breckon Sports Center Friday, September 28 against Williams Baptist University and Saturday, September 29 against Freed-Hardeman University.
