Recycle Week 22 – 28 June 2015

‘Recycle Week’ is a celebration of everything about recycling, with this year’s theme being “recycling around the home”.

The aim of the week is to encourage the public to think about items that can be recycled from all rooms in the house.

As the Parish Kerbside Recycling Scheme collects from the “home”, we would like to invite you to visit the Parish’s recycling facility to see how the Dear Debra Thank you for my tour of the recycling plant yesterday. I found it really interesting and was impressed by the scale of the operation and the enthusiasm driving it. It proved to me that recycling is very much worth the effort and I will continue to spread the word.

Following a recent visit to the Depot, Richard Hillman said “I cannot believe the size of the operation, and as a passionate recycler I am very pleased to see the amount of recycling being processed in the recycling facility”.

New Nursery Co-ordinator From 1st May the Parish’s newlyappointed Nursery Co-ordinator, Linda Le Marquand, has been in situ, replacing Val Payne who retired in September last year.

Linda has worked for the Parish in various capacities for both Nurseries, Westmount and Avranches, since August 1999, holding a Diploma in Nursery Nursing, a G Mental Health Training, including an MA in Primary Mental Health Work with Children and Adolescents. We all wish her well with her new position.

Mountain biking comes to town Members of the Channel Island Mountain Bike Association and the Caesarean Cycling Club held a competition on the slopes of Westmount Gardens last month. The event was sponsored by Jersey Electricity and had the full cooperation of the Parish’s Parks and Gardens team led by Tony Andrews to ensure that no damage was done to the Parish’s park and pathways. Everyone involved had a good afternoon and it is hoped that Westmount can be used for more mountain bike events in future.

Horse and carriage rides in St Helier Many of you will have noticed the arrival of Jimmy, the Irish Gypsy Cob who stands patiently at Parade Gardens every day (except Tuesdays and Fridays) from 10am, offering carriage rides and a brief history tour of St Helier. With the most gentle friendly nature, Jimmy is 7 years old and weighs in at 546kg. If you’re interested in taking this tour, please just show up at Parade Gardens from 10am.

CHANGES TO YOUR

TOWN CRIER Since the first edition of the St Helier Parish magazine rolled off the Town Hall photocopier back in the summer of 2002, parishioners have had regular newsletters containing useful information and news about parish life. Since February 2010 the Town Crier has been professionally produced with more than 60 editions delivered to every household and business.

We still think that the Town Crier has an important role to play, complementing the social media (website, Facebook page and Twitter) which is updated daily, as lots of parishioners have said that they enjoy having it on their coffee tables.

In recent months the rising cost of postage as well as the squeeze on advertising budgets has led us to review how the Town Crier is delivered to parishioners and as a result we have decided that from the July 2015 issue we will no longer be posting a copy of the magazine to every home and business. So, how do you continue to receive your monthly Town Crier?

Option 1 Each month the Town Crier will be available to collect from up to a dozen magazine bins around the Parish, including as is the case at present, the Town Hall, the General Hospital and the Post Office.

Option 2 The Town Crier will be available to read online via our website: www.sthelier.je

Option 3 We will be pleased to send an electronic copy of the magazine by email to any parishioners who wish to be on our email distribution list. Please contact Annie Le Noury (annie.lenoury@posh.gov.je) if you would like to do this.

THE DAY THE LIGHTS WENT OUT

V

isitors to Jersey from the UK in 1946 found many attractions to delight them of an evening, among which were Saint Helier's blazing neon signs and brightly illuminated shop windows. This was in contrast to drab post-war austerity high streets in the UK where restrictions on lighting were in place to manage coal shortages at power stations.

Not everyone was so pleased to see the bright happy face Saint Helier presented. It could be said that the bright lights of Jersey could be observed even from London where the UK government took a dim view. The UK Ministry of Fuel and Power found itself attempting to fend off questions about why Jersey could so ostentatiously use electricity, when the UK was dealing with a fuel crisis. Although the Minister, Mr. Shinwell, pointed out that what Jersey did was really nothing to do with him and that the UK was not supplying electricity to Jersey, this did not pacify the critics.

On 30 December 1946 an order was made by the States of Jersey in order to conserve supplies of fuel. This “Control of Lighting (Jersey) Order 1946” prohibited from 7 January 1947 the illumination of signs, advertisements and hoardings at any time, and the illumination of shop windows and other internal displays intended to be seen by persons outside the premises, except between 4pm–6pm on weekdays.

The Morning News reported on the end of what it described as with a photomontage showing blazing pub, café and cinema advertisements around Town with a headline that baldly pointed the finger at the party responsible: “'Lights Out!' – orders Mr. Shinwell”.

The Evening Post commented that the lighting ban seemed unjustified. Of course, if Jersey could help the situation in the UK by sacrificing its lights, people would accept the situation.

But since Jersey produced electricity from oil, of which there was no scarcity, rather than coal as in the UK, any sacrifice Jersey made was purely symbolic to satisfy the Ministry of Fuel's requests. The Evening Post further reported that the blackout imposed on commercial lighting had exposed how reliant people had been on the brightly lit displays to get around. Because the public street lighting was so inadequate, Saint Helier had been plunged into semi-darkness in mid-Winter, and it looked very much as if ratepayers would now have to be asked to pay more to cover the cost of lighting streets that had up till then been supplied by businesses.

Increased street lighting would use up the fuel that had been saved by turning off the commercial neon signs. A gloomy outlook all round, indeed!

JERSEY ELECTRICITY EQUIPMENT GIFT boosts FNHC Crisis Re-ablement Team

F

amily Nursing & Home Care (FNHC) District Nurses received a belated Christmas present this week with the delivery of a range of equipment purchased using Jersey Electricity’s annual donation of funds saved by not sending corporate Christmas cards.

New pulse oximeters, digital thermometers, stethoscopes and blood pressure machines were among the items that will supplement packs used by FNHC’s 27 District Nurses and fivemember crew of the charity’s new Crisis Re-ablement Team.

The new team has grown from FNHC’s Rapid Response Team and has had great success in enabling patients, who would otherwise have to be dealt with in hospital, to be treated in their own homes. In March it was reported that the Rapid Response Team had delivered 688 days’ of care in patients’ homes in the first nine months of operations, preventing the admission of 167 patients to hospital.

FNHC’s Fund Raising Manager Ivo Le Maistre Smith said: “Properly equipped nurses bring great benefits to Jersey: first, people will only be admitted to hospital if they clinically need to be, and they will only stay as long as is clinically necessary. Second, people will be supported to live independently in their own homes which, in turn, means entry into long-term residential care will be prevented or delayed.

“In the first three months since our Crisis Re-ablement Team was launched, it has treated a further 94 patients at home who would otherwise have had to have been admitted to, or remained in, hospital.”

JE CEO Chris Ambler said: “We have supported FNHC in this way for several years and are pleased to do so. The charity’s staff do tremendous work that is of huge benefit to our Island community.”

ST HELIER CELEBRATES

LIBERATION 70 Events held in our Parish on behalf of the Island are always a challenge as Parish staff and volunteers do their best to provide a fitting stage for important occasions while endeavouring to ensure that St Helier parishioners can enjoy parish-run events too. For the 70th anniversary of the Liberation, the Parish of St Helier laid on several special events for parishioners; the pictures have been on our website and Facebook pages and a selection is presented here.

The Liberation Tulips As reported in previous editions of the Town Crier, the Parish was given some specially commissioned tulips created by our bulb suppliers in Holland. In spite of our best efforts to slow them down, the tulips positioned in the Town Hall window boxes, the flower beds of the Town Church and other places came into bloom a few weeks early, but nevertheless the new flowers have been appreciated by everyone. Director of Parks and Gardens, Tony Andrews, has arranged for the bulbs to be dried off as they come in so that they can be offered for sale during next month’s Fête de St Hélier, in aid of a local charity.

Photographic exhibition – Vestiges

The Committee Room of the Town Hall hosted a display of photographs by Cedric Lafrance who has been researching the fortifications of the Atlantic Wall, including the concrete bunkers and sea defences around Jersey.

In the lead up to Liberation Day the Parish arranged for the three top historians specialising in Occupation History to deliver a lecture entitled ‘Protest, defiance and resistance in the Channel Islands.’ Dr Gilly Carr, Dr Paul Sanders and Dr Louise Wilmot each gave a short lecture based on the material contained in the recently published book of the same title. Topics included the significance of hidden radios as well as the courage displayed by Islanders who risked their lives by sheltering forced labour workers.

Liberation Day Breakfast The Parish has now committed to holding an annual breakfast on Liberation Day itself to enable Islanders who experienced the Occupation as well as ex-internees, Evacuees and members of the Armed Forces, to share their memories over a hearty breakfast.

Organised by Leo Harris, Jane Skelhorn and the Parish’s Social Committee, the event was an enormous success. The Parish is grateful to La Mare Vineyards for local wine and preserves, and to Damian Warman and his staff at the Vallée des Vaux branch of Waitrose for sponsoring the event and also helping to wait on table and cook.

LIBERATION 70 CONTINUED The Parish’s annual Liberation Tea Party was staged outside this year instead of in the Town Hall, with the weather proving kind to us. Organised by Town Centre Manager Daphne East, and Jason Maindonald of the Jersey Development Company, the event in Liberation Square was a great success.

Musical entertainment was provided by local band, Run for Cover, and young musicians from the Jersey Youth Music Centre at St James, while several sponsors contributed cakes and drinks for the hundreds of guests, including Cimandis, Highlands College, Dolce Vita Patisserie in Colomberie, Classic Catering and the chefs at the Parish’s residential home, St Ewold’s.

Stars of the afternoon were the 40 students from Haute Vallée School who put their uniforms on and worked enthusiastically all afternoon waiting on the tables, which involved carrying the food and drink over the road from the catering marquee on the Weighbridge, assisted by the St Helier Honorary Police. Members of the Jersey Evacuees Association were presented with a plate by a visiting group of veterans, ‘the Friendly Loyals’ from Bolton, while Miss St Helier and Junior Miss St Helier were on hand to give out the Parish’s new Liberation badges, raising money for the local charity Holidays for Heroes.

T

he Parish of St Helier’s Municipal Services Department is continuing its policy of having new vehicles in its fleet specially sign-painted with advertising in support of local charities. The refuse vehicle manufacturer, Dennis Eagle, provides the base colour at no cost to the Parish; the cost of livery is between £600 to £800 and is met by the charity involved. This is very reasonable, bearing in mind it will be acting as a mobile billboard for a number of years. The pink refuse truck, for example, has been displaying the cancer and cervical screening message for three years and still looks good.

More importantly, there is evidence that people are responding to the prompting this particular message gives and are getting the necessary health checks.

The messages on Parish vehicles are not limited to Jersey: the message on the pink refuse truck went as far as the British

Virgin Isles and tourists have taken pictures which have generated interest from their local press. The Parish’s charitable liveries are proving popular with a waiting list of six charities.

The average vehicle replacement in the Parish is 10 years, with the current cost of a replacement refuse vehicle being £130,000. However this can be dependent on a number of factors, such as availability of spares and wear and tear on the vehicle. The Parish fleet requires a minimum of 10 refuse trucks and two glass collection trucks to meet the needs of Parishioners.

The NatWest Island Games XVI Connect with the most digitally enabled NatWest Island Games ever

T

here’s no debate about what will be the biggest event of 2015 in Jersey – the NatWest Island Games will be welcoming 3,000 competitors and 1,000 officials from 24 islands, and will feature 14 sports over a packed week of events.

With sports taking place around the Island at 14 different venues we can all get involved and help support our athletes and soak up the atmosphere throughout the week – from 27 June to 3 July.

How can you get involved?

Well that’s easy, spectators are welcome at all of the Games venues throughout each day but if you can’t make it in person, now thanks to JT’s technology which is helping power this years’ Island Games you can keep up to date with instant updates online news and via social media platforms 24-7 throughout.

JT has been working with the organisers since the early planning phases to provide and put in place the very latest technology infrastructure to help make this the most connected NatWest Island Games ever, so that we can all get involved wherever we are, and bring to life an Island Games we can all be proud of.

That work has included setting up FREE Wi-Fi points at each of the key event venues, and the areas where the screens will be set up; including Howard Davis Park, FB Fields and Les Quennevais. Those venues – will be powered by JT’s superfast Gigabit Jersey fibre network. Each will have separate levels of security for the public, for the media covering the event and for the organisers and officials, to make sure that all the data is being transmitted and shared safely and securely.

Here’s a glimpse of just some of the technology powering the XVI NatWest Island Games: • FREE fibre-optic Wi-Fi • 860m of cabling to deliver LIVE results from all venues • 43 new Wi-Fi access points installed Island-wide • 5000 SIM cards given to visiting athletes to help them keep in touch with friends and family when away from home

Each of the venues will be connected via JT’s fibre and new superfast 4G network for up-to-date scoring and for beam-backs to big screens for spectators who can’t make it to the individual venues around the Island, or who want to watch a bit of sport on a lunch break.

Perhaps more importantly, that Wi-Fi and 4G mobile data network will also power what the Island Games organising team say will be an event fuelled by social media, with plans for video and image content across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram powered by organisers, competitors, supporters and fans.

The Games represent the opportunity for smaller communities to showcase their talent to the rest of the world and that is just what JT will be helping Jersey do through its fibre-optic network and 4G capabilities.

JT’s Tim Ringsdore, said that the expected volume of traffic on social media – particularly Instagram, which organisers plan to use extensively to share images – meant that they needed to ensure that the network was ready for the challenge of the games.

“The bandwidth demands are going to be huge. We are seeing data use growing dramatically across our customer base each month already, however the NatWest Island Games will demand even higher speeds and capacity on top of this, because people will be sharing images and videos, and those visiting our island will want to use Skype and FaceTime to keep in touch with friends and family back home.

“This is the biggest event that we have ever been involved with from a technical point of view. We have never done an event over multiple sites on this sort of scale to really showcase what we can do and are proud of our team who have been working tirelessly over some months to make this happen.

“It’s a massive challenge for us from a technology point of view – but it’s just like it is for the competitors: we’ve worked hard, we’ve prepared, and we’re ready to go.”

W

ith the NatWest Island Games taking place this month, the Jersey 2015 Organising Committee are gearing up to make it an event that everyone in the Island – not only the competitors and visitors – will really enjoy.

There are almost a thousand events taking place across the 14 sports, all of which are free for spectators, who can simply go to the venue and cheer on their team. Those who prefer something more cultural will be able to enjoy everything from opera to pilates during Games Week.

The heart of Jersey 2015 will be in and around St Helier, from beach volleyball in the Weighbridge and mountain biking in People’s Park, to a giant screen in Liberation Square which will enable people to watch live-streamed sports and recorded highlights, while Howard Davis Park will host the Games Village, the hub during the week.

In the days leading up to the Games, more than 600 tons of sand will be moved in to the Weighbridge so that two beach volleyball courts can be built, and the cycle track will be built in People’s Park. The Town Criterium takes place on Thursday 2 July on a route around the streets of St Helier. The Organising Committee are apologising for any disruption caused, and hope that anyone in town that day will come out and watch the thrills and spills of the cyclists speeding around the course.

Howard Davis Park Howard Davis Park will be transformed in to the Games Village, the heart of Jersey 2015 and, as one of the islands most beautiful and popular parks, it has been important to create a place that will welcome the competitors and visitors but also still feel open to locals. Each competition day the park will be open to the public from 8am to come along and enjoy the events that will be on offer or simply sit and soak up the atmosphere.

There will be entertainment on the main stage at lunchtime, a public bar, varied food concessions as well as a range of support for the athletes in the Mercury Medical Marquee. From the afternoon the big screens will be showing highlights of the previous days sporting events and live coverage of the main

competitions so locals won’t miss out if they can’t make it to the venue itself.

Another highlight will be the screening of Rossini’s Cinderella from Rennes Opera House at 2.15pm on Sunday 28 June 2015. The recorded screening of a live performance on the stage of the beautiful Rennes Opera House will be free of charge to the public.

There will also be a ‘Try A Sports Day’ where children and big kids alike can come and try out some fun sports for themselves, a Treasure Hunt hosted by Waitrose, and a Genuine Jersey Market giving the athletes and visitors a chance to take away a little part of Jersey.

t Helier is becoming an increasingly important part of what Jersey offers for those who enjoy eating out. In recent years we have seen the opening of top restaurants in town, including Michelin-starred Bohemia and Ormer restaurants, while Jersey Potteries’ move into town led to the creation of Banjo’s.

There are distinctive restaurants on every street corner and numerous other eateries, many of which have al fresco areas. Our town really does punch above its weight, given the size of its resident population, offering a far greater quantity of places to eat out than would be expected from similar places in Europe, which is no doubt due to the presence of the financial services industry and associated businesses as well as to the

Cannon Street and The Parade FROM GUNPOWDER TO GARDENS

T

he story of the Parade reflects the military importance of the position of Jersey and the area is also closely associated with public health and the growth of the population of St Helier. Its history shows how world events can impact on even our small Island. The Parade is now transformed from the disciplined drilling ground of the early 19th century to one of St Helier’s most popular public parks.

For much of Jersey's history, the town of St Helier consisted mainly of one road running from east to west behind the Town Church and the Royal Square, which was also the market place. This was known as Rue de Derrière, or the road behind, and is now known as King Street. As the majority of Jersey's population lived in the country parishes, there was not much surrounding St Helier but empty sand dunes, very much like the ones that can be seen along the Five Mile Road today. This is what the area where the Parade now stands would have been like for much of Jersey’s history.

The west end of town first began to be developed around the 1660s. By the 18th century the expansion of the town and rise in population prompted the building of the General Hospital, which was originally more of a poorhouse than a hospital for the treatment of illness as it is today. The story of the creation of

the Parade could be said to begin with the building of the hospital.

Construction on the hospital began in 1765, following a donation from the late Marie Bartlett, the widow of a wealthy St Aubin merchant. She gave 50,000 livres to build a poorhouse. A separate gift of land on the sand hills outside St Helier from Philippe Bandinel, Seigneur of the Fief of Mélèches, provided a location for the building.

As soon as the hospital was completed in 1768, it was requisitioned as a barracks by the British Army. At the time of the Battle of Jersey in 1781, troops from the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, one of the regiments who defended the Island during the battle, were billeted there. It is possible that these were the first troops to use the Parade as a drilling ground. We know that at some point in the late 18th or early 19th century part of the sand dunes next to the hospital building was levelled and turned into a formal parade ground.

The original hospital building was partially destroyed by an explosion of gunpowder in 1783 and then gutted by fire on July 18th 1859. On October 16th 1860 the foundation stone of the new hospital was laid. The storage of gunpowder and munitions in the area is reflected in the naming of Cannon Street.

cannon along the north east side of the Parade – the location of the present day Cannon Street.

Once the Parade was established, buildings soon sprung up around it.

Looking at the 1834 plan of St Helier by Elias Le Gros buildings can be seen on the south and north east sides with Elizabeth Place to the west. In contrast the 1795 Richmond map shows no properties in the area.

The declaration of war between Britain and France in 1803 saw the Island under threat and in 1806 General George Don was appointed LieutenantGovernor. He immediately embarked on a programme of improvements to the Island’s defences and road network. He was also responsible for improving the discipline of the militia, rebuilding the Island’s sea defences and advancements in farming.

General Don left the Island in 1814.

In 1872 the States commissioned Alfred Pierre Robinet, a French sculptor who had settled in Jersey, to produce a monument to General Don’s memory in recognition of his contribution to the Island. The monument was eventually unveiled on 29th October 1885 and is still located in the middle of the current Parade Gardens.

The Napoleonic period saw a large influx of British people to Jersey. These included military personnel, builders, engineers and labourers to assist with the fortification works. Many individuals decided to stay on and make their home in the Island.

The needs of the growing population led to the construction of All Saints' Chapel on one side of the Parade. The Parish of St Helier donated land to the trustees of All Saints’ on the 1st April 1833 on which to build the church. This is recorded in an extract from the book of Ecclesiastical Acts in the Parish of St Helier, and construction was completed in 1835.

The rising population also needed a supply of fresh water and one of the town’s public water pumps, the Pompe de Bas, was located in this area.

Unfortunately the public pumps and their unsanitary conditions were instrumental in spreading disease among

the population and in 1849 a cholera epidemic struck St Helier. When looking at the records of Mr Picot, a funeral director of the time, it is revealed that in the month of September 1849 of the 100 or so burials he was involved with, over half were cases of cholera.

In one month alone four members of the Alicette family of 9 Parade Place succumbed to the illness. On 15 November 1849 Mr Sinnatt, another funeral director, recorded that there was a general day of thanksgiving “for the disappearance of the dreadful cholera”.

One prominent resident of the Parade was James Holloway, a builder who came to the Island from Devon. He lived at 6 Parade Place, the current location of Bambola Toy Shop, with his wife Phoebe and family. He seems to have done quite well for himself, as the Public Registry records contain several contracts in which he bought and sold houses in the Island. By the time of his death, he and Phoebe owned property in Queen’s Road, King Street, Stopford Road and Bellozanne.

We can see from the Public Registry that he and Phoebe bought their property in Parade Place on July 13th 1869. It was bought from Francis, Charles and George Touzel who had acquired it in 1860 following the décret (bankruptcy) of Nicolas Perchard. The 1871 and 1881 censuses list the family still living at 6 Parade Place.

However in 1884 a disaster struck as records show that a fire started at the premises. Thankfully the family seem to have escaped unscathed but James died a few years later in November 1888. The house could not have been that badly damaged as the 1891 census shows Phoebe still living there along with her son-in-law and two servants. By 1901 Phoebe had moved to Wellington Place in the far more fashionable Stopford Road.

General Don’s monument is not the only one located in what is now Parade Gardens. The Gardens are also the home of the bust of Philippe Baudains, who

was Constable of St Helier for 21 years and an extremely active member of the States during the 19th century. Philippe lived in the vicinity of the Parade and introduced more than 100 bills to the States including the introduction of voting by ballot.

In contrast to General Don, whose monument was not unveiled until 53 years after his death, Philippe Baudains’ monument was erected in 1897 while he was still alive. This was an unusual tribute by the Island as it was more common to honour individuals after their deaths.

The Cenotaph is the third and perhaps the most significant of the Parade monuments. The Cenotaph was erected by the States in the 1920s and now stands in remembrance of the Jersey people who were killed in the first and second world wars. The Cenotaph still has an important place in Jersey’s Remembrance Service held in November each year.

TWINNING NEWS St Helier – Bad Wurzach Partnerschaft

n Saturday 25th April an 80 strong party from Jersey visited Bad Wurzach for their 70th Liberation, including 13 former internees and their families. The Constable of St Helier was joined by the Bailiff, the Chief Minister, the Constable of St Saviour and members of the local branch of the Red Cross. The group was met at Friedrichshafen airport by a welcoming party displaying banners and the Jersey flag and taken by coach to their hotels or host families in St Helier’s twin town.

Sunday 26th was a day of remembrance and reflection. A service was held at the Gotesberg Church, followed by the laying of wreaths at the wall of remembrance. Roses were laid on the graves of former internees that did not return – red roses were laid by the Jersey group and white roses by German friends. For some in the Jersey group it was the first time they had seen where their friends and relatives had been laid to rest 70 years ago.

Tuesday 27th April was the 70th Liberation Day celebrations, and the group had a guided tour around the Schloss, the former internment building.

As the former internees left they were greeted to cheers from the school children of the town. The unveiling of a wooden carved sculpture called ‘the Uprooted’ created by world renowned sculptor R. Koening took place in the gardens, followed by afternoon tea. grandmother and eight family members were all interned, presented the Mayor of Bad Wurzach with a gift provided with the help of Colin Letto of Letto & Sons, jewellers. The evening ended with Sadie Rennard singing ‘Beautiful Jersey’.

A small group of visitors from Bad Wurzach also visited St Helier for our Liberation 70 events, led by Bürgermeister Roland Bürkle.

St Helier – Avranches Jumelage

wenty visitors from St Helier’s twin town in Normandy visited last month to enjoy the Liberation 70 celebrations. Led by the Maire d’Avranches, David Nicolas, the group included several members of the Conseil Municipal. At the beginning of

this month the jumelage is supporting a visit by students from Haute Vallée School to their partner school in Avranches, while at the beginning of September there will be a visit to St Helier by the pétanque players of Avranches.

Join Jersey Arts Centre's youtheatre in their 30th major production, as they present the modern classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Based on the novel by Ken Kesey, and made into an Oscar-winning film starring Jack Nicholson, the play centres around the Oregon State Mental Institution and the arrival of the rebellious Randle P. McMurphy. As Nurse Ratched runs her ward with an icy efficiency, the arrival of the charming McMurphy shatters the calm of the institution with unforeseeable consequences. Featuring characters such as the childlike Billy Bibbit, the gentle giant Chief Bromden and the emasculated Dale Harding, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is hilarious and moving in equal measure. Performing from 24 – 27 June, this latest youtheatre production, directed by Nicole Twinam and Hettie Duncan, is not to be missed!

he Move On Café has now been open for nearly a year, with the aim of offering a friendly, safe place for young people to come and meet with their friends, get involved in some activities, find out about what other opportunities might be available to them or maybe just have a chat and let off some steam.

Another group celebrating a landmark at Jersey Arts Centre is Acappella Brass. Formed locally in 1995, Acappella Brass have performed just about every style of music: from Renaissance and Baroque, through Classical and Romantic, all the way to Dixieland Jazz and modern Pop music with a twist. The current line up of Luke Brown, Neil Britton, Matthew Godfrey-White, Jack Mitchell and Adam Griffith have been performing together for five years, but will be joined on the Arts Centre stage on 3 July by many past members. Make sure to come and support Acappella Brass' 20th Anniversary celebration – it promises to be their best yet!

As well as the regular sessions we try to get out and about too, recently undertaking a sponsored walk to St Aubin and back.

Not much money was raised, but fun was had by all and everyone made it there and back.

Marc’s Walk This year will be the fifth annual walk in memory of Marc Nieuwburg who died of cancer in 2006, and will be the best! So far the walk has raised £75,000 for the following charities: Teenage Cancer Trust (Jersey), CLIC Sargent (Jersey), Mont à l'Abbé School and the children's ward at the hospital/Antoine Trust, and the route changes each year!

The walk takes place on Sunday 9th August and there’s a choice of three starts: 14 miles: starting at Plémont, 7 miles: starting at the Val de la Mare Reservoir and 3 miles: starting at the Waterfront.

Presentation of pétanque competition trophies

T

he Jersey Pétanque Association hosted the presentation of trophies and medals for the Winter Magic Touch League and the St Helier Lunchtime Business League on 29th April. The presentation was carried out at the Town Hall.

The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, presented the awards to the top three teams in the four divisions.

The winners of Division One ‘L'Homard qui Rie’ received the top honour.

The Magic Touch League trophies were also presented by the Constable.

Again cups, medals and plaques were awarded to the top three teams in each of the three leagues. The winners of Division One were ‘Vagabonds’. An

additional trophy was given to the strongest team in Division Three, ‘Les Crapauds’.

The presentations ended with Constable Crowcroft giving medals and representing the trophy of the Parish Pétanque League to the inaugural team winners, St Clement. The Parish Pétanque League started in 2012 but medals were not presented at the time.

The Chairman of the Jersey Pétanque Association, Derek Hart, thanked the Constable and Magic Touch for their continued sponsorship and support, as well as the players of the various leagues and the supporters of the Association, wishing everyone an enjoyable summer season of pétanque.

Nou pouôrrait dithe qu'lé mais d'Juîn est l'pus raisonnabl'ye des mais: i' n'fait ni trop caud ni trop fraid; nou n's'y trouve pon au carrefour ès loups et nou-s'a assez d'laîsi pouor èrgarder les flieurs, les grèves, la bieauté d'la Ville et d'la campangne, et ch'est un pliaîsi dé s'dêhaler. The joy of June

O

ne can be really joyful in the month of June. Indeed, one can play and caper from dawn till evening (if one's young and full of energy – ah, if youth knew how to, if age still could!). Summer's back once more and everything's overjoyed again all day long – if the weather's good. There's no need though to get on one's high horse – one must be reasonable in everything. One could say that the month of June is the most reasonable of the months: it's neither too hot nor too cold; there isn't too much of a crowd about, and one has enough leisure to look at flowers, beaches, the beauty of Town and countryside, and it's a pleasure to get out and about. One can also observe the latest Summer fashions when people are out and about: “Have you seen her over there? She's got up like I don't know what!” Well, there are jealous men and women in Jersey even in the joyful month of June!

VISITE DU BRANCHAGE 2015 In accordance with the requirements of the Loi (1914) sur la Voirie, as amended, the first Visite du Branchage of the year will take place in St Helier on Monday 6th July The Loi requires occupiers of land bordering on the public roads of the Parish to trim hedges and branches and to cut all overhanging trees so as to give a clearance of 12 feet over main roads and by-roads and of 8 feet over footpaths and to remove any other encroachments on the public highway.

A fine may be levied for each infraction. The attention of occupiers of land is drawn to the need to ensure that all cuttings and trimmings are removed from the roads and footpaths after the branchage is completed.

The afternoon starts at 1.45pm from Gloucester Street, arriving at the Garden Centre at around 3pm and finishing back in St Helier at 5pm.
