My Swan Song

Before we came to the Icknield Way Villages Hazel and I lived in Mistley, Manningtree on the banks of the River Stour. At this time of year the evenings are often filled with the honking of skeins of geese as they make their way back from the harvested fields to the waters of the estuary. It was always a stirring, delightful sight and sound. During the day we often enjoyed walking along ‘The Walls’ at Mistley observing the birds that visit the estuary, especially the swans, for which Mistley is famous.

In ancient times it was commonly believed that mute swans were completely mute during their lifetimes until the moment just before death, when they sang one beautiful song. Of course, you only have to approach a swan yourself to discover that none of them is completely mute – they will grunt, hiss and snort if they don’t like you! However, the legend has stuck in the imagination. One Tudor madrigal went as follows: The silver Swan, who living had no Note, when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat.

Leaning her breast against the reedy shore, thus sang her first and last, and sang no more: ‘Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes!

Even though it’s based on a false belief, the phrase ‘swan song’ has passed into our language and is often used to indicate someone’s final work or performance.

All this is a long winded way to say that this is my final contribution to The Village Web as I step down as rector here and retire. I have really enjoyed my association with this magazine and would like to thank the Editor and her team for the fun of our monthly meetings, all the encouragements given, the tea and the chocolate biscuits. The last seven years have been amongst the happiest years of my ministry, and both Hazel and I have loved being part of this church and area.

We feel that now is the right time to go and allow others to take this brilliant parish forward. Retirement will mean a whole new chapter of life for us and for this parish too. But whether we are going or remaining God will always be with us; we can entrust the future to him.

In fact, Hazel and I are not going far (only to Saffron Walden) and so will follow parish news with interest. We will be praying for God’s blessings for you - and we will certainly be keen readers of the Village Web! With warmest best wishes for the future,

As a parish, we shall be able to say our farewells to Andy and Hazel on 16 and 18 September (see Notes page 19). We shall miss their kind, calm, patient Christian witness. They have presided over our transition to a single parish and leave us united with a clear purpose here.

We will continue to seek to be Christ-centred, prayerful, faithful to scripture, loving, welcoming, accepting all and share fellowship. These tenets have been central to Andy and Hazel’s ministry amongst us. With the gifts of the Spirit, drawing on the strength of the Son and in the love of our Father, we shall seek to continue to grow in love and peace. We wish Andy and Hazel a joy filled ‘retirement’, full of Grace and love.

Do Something Different

Judi Brett and Helen Bennett were confirmed on 12 July, at Chrishall Church.

During the service they were invited to share their thoughts and feelings about their decision to become confirmed.

Their words are a testimony to the strength that they gain, from the knowledge of the enduring love of our saviour, Christ.

“It feels like I having been moving towards my confirmation all of my life. I was baptised as a baby and went to church and Sunday school as a child. Then, as a teenager, I rebelled, so the Church became a place for just high days and holidays. When our children were born, Laurence and I felt strongly that the children should be baptised, so we started coming to Chrishall church. A turning point for me was when Laurence was confirmed a few years back and I had an emotional reaction – I felt bereft, like I had lost him. So I confided in a Christian friend, started learning more about the Bible and God’s love, power and consistency. My faith, which I felt had always lain latent within me, started to grow. I have now come to a point in life where I am becoming more reliant on God and feel His support in all aspects of my life. I now feel a contentment that I have not known before, which can only have come from my relationship with Him. Dancing for the Windmill

Last year, Wendy and David McKeown organised dance lessons for absolute beginners with all proceeds being donated to the Great Chishill Windmill Trust. This was a great success and £1000 was added to the fund. The original dancers persuaded Wendy and David to run more lessons through this coming Autumn and Winter. They will be held in Great Chishill Village Hall at 7.30 to 8.30 on Friday evenings commencing 23 September.

So, if you have done a little ballroom and Latin dancing but would like a refresher, please contact David at mckeown.david@gmail.com. If you are an absolute beginner, still get in touch as we have a gentle pace of learning so that anyone with rhythm shouldn’t find catching up too difficult. These are fun sessions with emphasis on enjoyment – we are not after medal performance, just to be able to get around the floor with confidence.

Chishill Windmill Update

Passing by, you’d be forgiven for thinking nothing is happening with the windmill. It’s not for lack of intent but, frustratingly, much preparation is required before we can start.

Listed Building Consent (LBC) must be sought but the discovery of a dead bat compelled us to carry out night surveys during the breeding season to ensure that it is not an active roost. Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have the confirmation and will be completing paperwork to allow us to tackle the failing timbers. We will start by strengthening the 9

trestle on which the building is supported – clearly the most important aspect is to make the mill safe. Also planned is work to uncover the track on which the tail assembly ran as the mill was turned. If you see what appears to be a massed gardening event at the site, it’ll be a team of Rotarians who have volunteered to accomplish this task. It’s been necessary to fit a new tarpaulin to keep out the worst of the weather after the previous one was ripped by storms.

We are anxious to replace the underlying broken weatherboards but must await agreement with the authorities after gaining LBC. Slowly but surely we will get there!

We have a pressing need for someone with enthusiasm, and hopefully experience, to take on the role of Project Manager to oversee work and liaise with contractors and authorities. If anyone thinks they could help, please contact David at dm@greatchishillwindmill.com.

Parenting Course

A five-session course designed to equip those parenting or caring for 11-18 year olds, with tools to build healthy relationships with their teenagers while guiding them into adulthood.

Many parents feel under increasing pressure and value help and support.

This course is designed for any parent whether they consider themselves to have strong parenting skills or are struggling, and whether they are parenting as a couple, as a single parent or as a stepparent. There will be 5 weekly 2-hour sessions (including refreshments!) including recorded talks from experts and time for discussion. The course is run on Christian principles but is relevant and helpful for any parents, with or without a Christian faith or background. Several parents, in the parish, have experienced the course and found it very valuable indeed; so valuable, that we are running it from September 20/21 up to half term, so that others can benefit from the wisdom imparted and the opportunity to discuss parenting 'challenges'. Hope for the Middle East

Hope for the Middle East is an exciting 7-year campaign which our Parish Charity Partner of the year, Open Doors, are launching in September, focusing on prayer and petition specifically for the Middle East. As you may know, the situation in that area of the world has worsened dramatically, for Christians especially, over the last few years.

Open Doors are asking churches across the UK and the world to raise their voices in prayer and to unite in speaking out for the church in the Middle East.

They have asked us to consider including prayer for Iraq and Syria in church; during services, or perhaps by hosting a full prayer event. They are currently working on a pack filled with creative and adaptable ideas to inspire people to pray.

Included in the pack will be a petition that is being launched this summer with the aim of gathering a million signatures from around the world to take to the UN next summer.

The message of the petition comes from six months of consultation with church leaders and Christians in Syria and Iraq, where they have been asked what it would take to help them stay in their homes. Their response boiled down to three clear points: legal equality, dignified living conditions and a central role in reconciling and rebuilding their societies.

Bangkok Migrant School

Ann and Martin Lane’s daughter and family have lived in Bangkok for several years. She helps at the migrant school and also involves her children in school holidays. Earlier this year Ann helped her daughter organise a fun day to raise funds for the school. She has written this article to give more insight into the persecuted church.

Pupils of the school are the children of families fleeing Christian persecution or communist governments, such as Pakistan, Vietnam, The Hmong tribes, Sappa and China.

A visa is relatively easy to get and arrival is often by truck. The Bangkok govt. provides initial support, which is abruptly stopped after 6 months.

Any savings that some may have are soon used up and most end up in hostels in the slum areas, penniless and without official paperwork. This means they can only work undercover and in fear of being reported. If discovered they will be put in prison. Migrants with dark skins have a particularly difficult time as the Thai people are often racist.

After 6 months, the hostels are supported by the Christian community in Bangkok but migrants live in fear of police informants and raids happen on a regular basis. If this occurs, the families are taken to detention centres to await registration, which happens once a year. They can be detained for several years before they receive their documents. The fathers are held in one block and the mothers and children in another.

They are not allowed to meet or communicate with each other.

Consequently, some families lose touch completely.

They have no access to medical facilities.

The Migrant School is run by an amazing young man in his 20's, from the USA, called Dwight Turner. He came to Bangkok as a teacher and has devoted his spare time and money to running the school, helped by Christian volunteers, mainly expats who have the appropriate skills. Our daughter was a teacher so helps them learn English. They learn Thai, craftwork, cooking, maths, music, writing, all subjects to hopefully 12

enable them to eventually work. The children are given a meal while at school. They are aged from 0-8 years old.

At the weekend, ''Courageous Kitchen '' takes place, which is a fun and learning day ending in a feast for all.

It is a big problem keeping the children occupied as they are so restricted as to where they can go, for fear of the police. Schooling for 8-15 year olds is provided by the Thai government.

In Search of Sanuk is a Christian based charity set up by Dwight Turner, helped by volunteers, to fundraise for the school and to support the migrant families .Sanuk is thai for fun and laughter.

Thomas Enos Green Thomas Enos Green: The 9th (Service) Battalion Suffolk Regiment, 71st Brigade, 6th Division entrained at PROVEN for CANDUS on the 2nd of August and from there marched to MAILLY-MAILLET WOOD. These positions, with the exception of a week spent at LOUVENCOURT were held until the 28th August. Duties in the area included clearing 36th (Ulster) Division’s dead from the 1st July attack from the battlefield.

The Battalion moved to MONTONVILLERS on the 29th. On the 11th September it took over trenches from the 4th Grenadier Guards south east of GINCHY. Together with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment the Battalion attacked The QUADRILATERAL [a German strongpoint approx. 1000m east of GINCHY] on the 13th September, which was soon checked by machine gun fire. Further unsuccessful attempts were made throughout the day and the attackers dug in about a half mile from their start point with the 2nd Sherwood’s on their left and the 8th Bedford’s on their right.

Casualties were heavy: Killed Capt SH Byrne and 2/Lt GD Garner and 15 Other Ranks. Wounded 2/Lt C Wayman, 2/Lt AG Douglas, Capt VW Barrett, 2/Lt G Collyer, 2/Lt DK MacDonald, 2/Lt HE Falkner, 2/Lt A Fudge, 2/Lt F Goatcher, 2/Lt H Almack, Capt HR Rawson RAMC and 185 Other Ranks.

On the 15th September the 9th Battalion was ordered to attack the enemy trenches and to push on to their final objective which was between LES BOUCHS and MORVAL and to establish a line on this ridge. The 9th Suffolk’s lined up to move forward at 7.50 a.m. but owing to very heavy artillery and machine gun fire half of C Company could not leave their trench. The remainder of the Battalion moved forward but were held up by very heavy machine gun fire, which came from the enemy’s strong position, the QUADRILATERAL. It was from the machine guns that the Battalion lost very heavily. Lt Col Mack was killed at 8.30 a.m. The remainder of the Battalion dug themselves in and got into touch with both flanks. The enemy’s barrage was extremely heavy and caused many more casualties. The Battalion held the line they established until relieved by the 14th Durham Light Infantry at 11 p.m., 15

and moved back to support trenches where they reorganised.

Casualties were: Killed Lt Col A Mack, Lt JC Fallowes, Lt LA Whillier, 2/Lt F Wilson and 350 Other Ranks. Wounded Capt LE Ensor, Capt SW Church, Lt JW Harmer, 2/Lt WH Hoile, 2/Lt CG Gardner, 2/Lt G Hopkins, 2/Lt RT Scott and 990 Other Ranks. Missing; 2/Lt SJ Price, 2/Lt RG Smith and 93 Other Ranks.

Thomas Enos Green of the 9th (Service) Battalion Suffolk Regiment was posted Missing in Action on the 16th September; His body was never recovered.

Clearing the Battlefield. From our sources we have some knowledge of the task of clearing the battlefield which we could expect Enos Green to have been involved in. The historian Lyn MacDonald recorded the experience of Cpl. Joe Hoyles MM of the 13th (Service) Battalion, The Rifle Brigade of burying, in mid-July, the dead of the 1st July attack. Lying in the burning sun, soaked by the frequent showers of a week’s changeable weather, the bodies of the dead soldiers had been turned black by the elements.

Cpl Hoyles: “There was a terrific smell. It was so awful it nearly poisoned you. A smell of rotten flesh. The old German front line was covered with bodies they were seven and eight deep and they had all gone black. The smell! These people had been laying since the First of July. Wicked it was! Colonel Pinney got hold of some stretchers and our job was to put the bodies on them and, with a man at each end, we threw them into that crater. There must have been a thousand bodies there. I don’t know how many we buried. I’ll never forget that sight.

Bodies all over the place. I’ll never forget it. I was only eighteen, but I thought, There’s something wrong here!”

Thomas Enos Green was born in 1884 in Chrishall, and was the son of Charles & Naomi Green who lived in Crawley End, Chrishall. In 1911 his occupation was a farm labourer, and he was not married. Thomas Enos Green was Posted Missing in Action on 16th September 1916 aged 32, during the battles of the Somme, later presumed Killed in Action. He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial (Pier 2, Face A), Picardy, France. His rank and regiment at time of his death: Private 23095, 9th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment Jean Hards-Nicolls and John Kay 16

Challenge 500 The bell ringers of Great Chishill are planning on taking part in ‘Challenge 500’ – a Heritage Open Day venture with the National Trust. As part of this we will ring the bells from 6 till 7pm on Thursday 8 September (when bells all over the country will also be ringing) then be available until 8pm to answer answer questions and show people the ropes (sic).

We would also like to be open from 10 till 1pm on Saturday 10th when we will probably have some talks, posters and possibly give people the chance to get an idea of what it is like to be on the end of the rope! This event is supported and promoted by Heritage Open Days and The National Trust.

Susan has drawn on Joan Cobham’s five marriages to write the biography. Based on fact, it draws on what is known about the places Joan lived, the men she married and the events she lived through, to give a sense of the kind of life she must have lived.

Drift: The Pull Of Religion And The World Kev Murdoch, a minister pioneering a new church in Euston, is bringing the book of Hebrews to life at CABC 16 on Saturday 15 October, from 104pm in Chelmsford Baptist Church.

Kev is convinced that Christ is just as much good news to the

people of the 21st Century as he was for 1st Century people.

Parish Walk This year, our annual amble through our beautiful landscape, taking in 7 churches, enjoying delicious refreshments and great company, will be on 8 October.

All details in the next Web. Church Mice Summer Special A huge number of Mice (current and alumni) came to Mill House this summer with their carers, to enjoy the songs, craft and picnic.

They bid a very sad and fond farewell to Hazel thanking her for 7 years of kind, patient loving leadership.

The Mice will continue to meet in September.

Sunday Clubs We have a dedicated team of volunteers running our children's work in the church. After many years Angela Patrick and Gavin Halliday have decided to step down from teaching at our Sunday clubs at the 10.40 services. We should like to thank them both

very much for all they have contributed to our children.

From October we shall therefore need two more people to come onto the rota to teach at Sunday club. With the rota system, you will teach about once a month. All lesson plans and materials are provided, you just need a desire to teach God's word to our young people. All leaders will be DBS checked and will need to complete a simple online Child Protection course.

Cereals Agricultural Show The Cereals Event took place at Chrishall Grange in June, and for the third time generous homeowners in the Parish, took part in a scheme, offering accommodation to Show visitors and sharing the price of bed & breakfast with our Churches. We are grateful to the Bond, Joint, Melville, Smith, Thompson, Tozer, Tregoning and West families for taking part in the scheme and helping to raise some £2000 for our Parish.

2016 Tennis Tournament 36 players took part in our eighth annual Tennis Tournament in glorious July weather. The event raised a wonderful £1000 for Parish funds. Big thanks to Edward & Mel Chandler, Dominic & Sarah Reilly and Christopher & Antonia Tregoning for lending their courts for the qualifying rounds. The finals were once again played in the lovely setting

at Little Chishill Manor, thanks to Peter and Gill Lyster. A wonderful tea was provided there by Francesca Wells with the support of some of the finest cooks in the district. Our congratulations go to our champions, Jamie Gibbs & Rosie Shaw of the Barley Tennis Club, who narrowly prevailed over two Chrishall players, Roly Denman and Philly LindsayClark, in a closely fought final.
