Annual Family Walk 8th October

We believe that the youngest walker to do the whole walk was 10 ... it would be impolite to comment on the age of the most senior walker! We plan to pray for each community and the needs of the wider world and to appreciate our beautiful, peaceful, countryside.

For the younger walkers there will be activities along the way and a prize for the furthest walked by a primary and secondary school pupil. The refreshments are bound to be wonderful (and very welcome!).

Please meet at Chrishall Church, from 8.30am we’ll leave at 9am. If you are joining half way you should leave Chrishall at 12.30pm to meet at Chiswick Hall at 12.50pm.

Neon Light Party 100% fun: guaranteed!

Most adults have fond memories of childhood Halloween complete with fancy dress costumes, apple bobbing and pumpkin lanterns. There are however, many aspects about Halloween with which many Christians are uncomfortable, such as images of ghosts, devils and witches. How do we make a sensible response? We are not in a world where witches are old hags, riding on broomsticks, but we are in a world where ordinary people practise witchcraft and other occult methods.

Whilst most Halloween parties can be harmless fun, we should avoid thinking that evil doesn’t exist. It is ever present in our world. Jesus recognised the grip of evil on some people’s lives and he confronted it, as in Luke 8 26-39. Many Christians choose to use All Hallows Eve as a time to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death and God’s ultimate victory over all the powers of evil.

We are holding a Neon Light Party, for all children of primary school age on October 31 from 5.30-7pm in Chrishall Village hall, to celebrate the good rather than the scary things of life.

Party goers should wear their brightest, most colourful clothes.

There will be games, activities and a yummy party tea with everyone's favourites. Admission is free.

Helping Others

Samara’s Aid Appeal for refugees in the Middle East Yes, we are off again, for the beloved refugees fleeing from ISIS to northern Iraq and Lebanon. Do pray for them, for the Lord’s provision and his promised shielding and guarding at all times, for keeping them and drawing them to himself.

So to our practical support - All warm clothing for all ages, namely coats, tops, bottoms, hats, gloves, scarves, strong shoes and boots with good soles (charity shops are a great resource) plus vital funds for transport costs, which are huge!

Operation Christmas Child

The Shoe Box Scheme Encouraged by the generosity of people within our parish over the last three years we are participating again in the shoe box scheme to enable needy children in other parts of the world to receive a small box of gifts at Christmas. With this month’s copy of the Village Web you should receive a leaflet giving details of how you can participate. Further copies of the leaflet (one needed for each box) are available from the Church Office or from Joy on 838545. The boxes when filled should be delivered to the Church Office or to 10 Fowlmere Road, Heydon by Sunday 6 November.

This date allows time for the boxes to be delivered to the Regional Centre before final dispatch to the chosen destination. The leaflet provides useful ideas as to suitable gifts. Please adhere closely to the guidance given particularly in regard to box size and content.

The content of each box will be checked at the Regional Centre to ensure that each child receives a comparable gift within the stated age limits and that the contents fall within the guidelines. Knitted hats, scarves or gloves are particularly welcome.

A donation of £3.00 per box is requested to cover transportation costs and this can be given by way of cash, a cheque or a donation made on line for which a bar coded receipt will be given for inclusion in the box – details in the leaflet. Joy and the church office have a supply of ready decorated boxes priced at 40p each. Any further queries, please give the church office or Joy a call.

Potatoes and Onions et again, to fulfil deep needs and strengthening, and providing, in hope. A great harvest of very good quality, tasty potatoes followed by organic potatoes and then onions. These will be available through the winter months at church services. All donations are shared equally between Grow Peace in Africa: Pathway out of Poverty and Shofar Fund International Grow Peace in Africa helps thousands of children now in South Africa.

They provide food, education and improving self-sufficiency by providing their own fruiting olive trees. Olive oil and products are an expanding industry as well as growing their own vegetables. Their latest project is teaching the older children to grow their own vegetables successfully on their own farms.

The Ukraine based Shofar Fund International, providing a beautiful loving meal to many of the most needy folk, five days a week. This includes delivery to the elderly marooned in the high rise concrete flats, all completely free. Plus, family sponsorship and provision for internally displaced refugees having fled from East Ukraine. The great love and prayers often leading them to the Lord headed up by Pastor Akardie.

Our grateful thanks again to Robert Smith and his cheerful staff for bearing us in the gleaning fields. What a joy! Praise the Lord.

Sloe Gin Competition

This is the First Call for Gt Chishill’s Sloe Gin Competition, open to all in the Icknield Way Parish – and beyond. Profits to the Bell Fund. We hope that this year will be Novice Year, as Sloe Gin is very easy to make.

It is England’s oldest Sloe Gin Competition, much copied elsewhere.

First you need to pick your sloes (or damson, or any other fruit you want to enter). Sloes are the fruit of the blackthorn, to be found along any footpath bordering a hedge and an excuse for a bracing walk late October/November.

Traditionalists say that they should be picked after the first frost but global warming has put paid to that. A night in the freezer does as well.

Purists also prick their sloes with a needle after freezing and thawing but no RCTs have been done on this.

After that, it’s gin. People who win say it’s the quality of the sloes that matter not the gin, so don’t waste money on this. And sugar. Quantities are around 1lb sloes to a bottle of gin and 5-8 oz sugar. You can put in a little to start and add more later as some is needed to leach out the sloes.

End of season report

The Great Chishill Cricket Club season came to a close with promotion into the Senior League Division 3, for only the second time in our history!! We are so grateful to all those who have supported the club over the season.

31 different players have represented the club in 18 games. At the close of the season we had the second leading wicket taker with 29 wickets, the highest run scorer with 764 runs, the top fielder (wicket keeper) with 24 dismissals and greatest not out batsman in the league with 8 not outs, not too bad for a small village team, beating Royston on all counts!

At the annual cricket club golf day, held at Barkway Park Golf Club, the coveted Knoble-Forbes Trophy was won by skipper, Adam Wright, just reward for his efforts this season. Much fun was had by all! The annual dinner is being held on Saturday 8th October (see Notes p.14) Indoor nets will be running in the New Year, so don’t forget to dust off your kit then! Our recent contact with Scouting put me in mind of a different cultural tradition, that of France’s Foreign Legion.

Some years back the HQ at Castelnaudary had an Open Day, to which we went in pouring rain. I come from Army families on both sides and thoughts of Papillion both repelled and intrigued me.

It was an extraordinary eye-opener. The Open Day had been organised for soldiers’ families but, as the French do, suddenly decided to make it open to all-comers. The atmosphere was that of a really wellfunctioning United Nations. Different platoons dissolved into various ethnic ‘food camps’, staffed by nationals and offering a huge array of different cuisines at affordable prices: African, Carribbean, Arab and far eastern (Vietnamese) food.

Three years in the Foreign Legion earns you highly prized French Citizenship for soldiers and families, so motivation in the ranks is high.

Coercion was significantly absent as we nosed off-limits around the facility, watching new recruits being drilled by NCO’s. Officers and men did not salute each other but shook hands. Mutual liking and respect was the prevailing atmosphere.

I reflected on the contrasting reported atmosphere of Deepcut and fantasised about the Foreign Legion advising on training of British Army recruits, now impossible with Brexit.

The Wife of Cobham

In Chrishall Church there is a large brass that covers (or once covered – it has probably been moved) the tombs of Sir John de la Pole, who died probably in 1380, and his wife Joan (née Cobham) who died probably ten years or so later. And the stone effigy that is also to be found in the church is thought by some to represent Sir John’s mother Margaret, who probably died at around the same time.

Sir John and his lady were both only children – or at least, the only children of their parents to survive their early childhood, which is all we can be certain of from their era. They had two children who survived 9

infancy, but their son died at the age of 10 or so, so it was his sister, another Joan, who became heir to both their families. Since both the de la Poles and the Cobhams were owners of a great deal of land stretching right across southern England and well into the Midlands, this made young Joan (who also inherited her grandfather’s title, and became Lady Cobham) a very rich woman.

Joan’s brass survives too, but although she was probably born in Chrishall, she was buried not there but in Cobham in Kent, the ancestral home of her mother’s family. Unlike her parents, she lived to a good age (she was about 65 when she died in 1434), and she had an eventful life, which saw her marrying five times.

Author Susan Curran has drawn on those five marriages to write a biography of Joan. Although it is firmly based on fact, she stresses that it is quite different from the biography of a twentieth-century individual, because none of Joan’s own words survive, and only a little is known of her actions. Instead it draws on what is known about the places Joan lived, the men she married and the events she lived through, to give a sense of the kind of life she must have lived.

Joan’s husbands were an eclectic group. Most prominent among them was one of the most notorious men of their age, Sir John Oldcastle (also known in later life as Lord Cobham in right of his wife). Considered by many to be the template for Shakespeare’s Falstaff, he was a friend of King Henry V. He was also a social and religious reformer, in an era when dissent was little tolerated, and although the king granted him a great deal of license, he eventually overstepped it and was arrested.

Famously he escaped from the Tower of London, attempted to set off a major rebellion which would (if it had gone to plan) have seen the king killed and Oldcastle himself put on the throne, failed disastrously, and spent several years on the run before being captured and executed.

Lady Cobham was arrested too, but after Sir John’s death she was quietly freed. One of the questions Susan considers is whether she too was a Lollard, a member of the group of religious radicals which included not 10

just Sir John, but perhaps also one or two of her previous husbands. Did she help Sir John escape from the Tower, and did she help him remain free afterwards? Although the historical record has little to say on the subject, it is quite possible that this daughter of Chrishall quietly played a major part in the events of her time, not just funding radicalism, but supporting it through her own actions.

Susan also uses illustrations to bring a sense of the period to her medieval biographies (this is her third); including photographs of the places that feature and many of contemporary stained glass. She tries to give some of the sense of a medieval illuminated manuscript, so the pages are full of colour and, although the books are meticulously researched, they are designed to be easy reads for anyone regardless of their knowledge (or lack of it) of the period.

Notes Valete Andy and Hazel We bid a very, very sad, fond farewell to Hazel and Andy on Sunday 18 September. The weekend of celebrations began with a memorable evening of cabaret ‘acts’ and supper. We have been truly blessed by their ministry here and we pray that they will enjoy the peace they so richly deserve.
