What Are The Best Watery Eye Treatments Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgery that helps drain your tear ducts. This surgery may be offered if you have a blocked tear duct. The surgery is performed externally, through a small incision in the skin, or through the nose without any skin incisions. Both of these methods have proven successful. Each of your eyelids have a small opening which drains away the tears, which are normally produced in the eye. When you blink, the tears are pushed to these opening, emptying through a small tube into the larger lacrimal sac. The sac leads to the tear duct, which is around a boney structure, which surrounds the nose, draining into your nasal cavity. Blocked tear duct symptoms include tearing, discharge from the eye and painful tear ducts, with watery eyes being one of the most common symptoms. Why the tear duct blocks is unknown, though they can be caused by certain health problems including chronic sinus inflammation, tumour obstruction, nose trauma and conjunctivitis. A qualified and experienced ophthalmologist carries out tear duct tests, identifying if there are any obstructions and what the cause can be. The watery eye surgery is carried out by an experienced and qualified surgeon that opens the lacrimal sac, leading to the nasal cavity. A small incision is made in the skin, just under the eye, next to the nose. They create a small opening in the bone. The opening connects the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity, a small tube is place to help keep the new tear duct open. Endoscopic watery eye surgery is a less invasive procedure, where a sinus surgeon and eye surgeon work together, bypassing the tear duct and creating a new opening from the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity. The sinus surgeon will create an opening in the bone with a connection between the lacrimal sac and nasal cavity. The eye surgeon places a tube which keeps the new tear duct open. Watery eye surgery is provided to relieve blocked tear duct symptoms, usually excessive watering of the eyes or eye crusting. Infected tear ducts include swelling, tenderness, eye irritation and mucous discharge. The good news is that if you have a blocked tear duct, it does not automatically mean you need surgery. Your health care provider may recommend less invasive treatments, such as a warm compress or antibiotics to fight infection. But if you have severe watery eyes, then chances are you will require DCR surgery.
