Acting Space: Transforming Audience into Actor in Space

HOW CAN SPATIAL DESIGN TURN THE AUDIENCE INTO AN ACTOR?

This topic comes from my interest and background in both architecture and theatre. Theatre artists always seek ways to make their performances more engaging. Nowadays, some directors incorporate audience participation. This research started from the idea of “involving the audience in the theatre.”

• The Goal

The goal was to make participants in space feel like actors by experiencing different concepts and acting within the space.

• The Concept

The first concept was “changing positions,” using a crafted wooden staircase video projector, and red curtain to encourage active participation. Another idea was “sound creation,” where I hung a bell and provided QR codes for instrument sounds and a live microphone, allowing the audience to create and hear sounds.

The “being framed” concept used different frame materials and sizes to visually enclose the audience, similar to a stage setting. Lastly, “being seen” involved spotlights and images of faces and eyes to make the audience feel important, referencing the traditional roles of performer, viewer, stage, and story.

To conclude, by changing positions, being behind frames, influencing sound, and being seen, even those without theatre experience can feel like actors and be spotlighted.

How does a stage turn the audience to an actor?

In theater, stories come alive through performances that captivate and transport audiences. While traditional theater is beloved, there’s a growing interest in making these experiences more interactive.

This project explores how to make audiences active participants in the story by using elements like wooden staircases, video projectors, and red curtains. The goal is to move beyond just watching and allow audiences to engage with and influence the performance. By rethinking traditional setups, this research aims to create a new kind of theater experience that blends classic elements with fresh, interactive ideas.

Bathroom Design for an Office | Winter 2021

The Goal was to design two bathrooms with optimal sizes in a small area, for an office. Finally we offered three options and one of my ideas was selected by the employer.

Virtual Furnishing| Summer and Fall 2021

Manager: Sean Kalaki Participated as a virtual furnisher

In the real estate businesses, some owners make their houses furnish to sell, but some others do not spend money to real furnish, so do it virtual, then.

I used Adobe Photoshop to set virtual furniture in houses of Melbourne. The important issue was do the perspective correctly. Consequently,The point was making them to be real.

• The Goal

Each stage in the production of a theater, from the formation of the initial idea to the implementation of it, requires different workspaces, each of which need to have different qualities and may be located in different geographical locations. These differences can lead to a waste of time, cost and energy for the cast and crew.

Therefore, this project is an attempt to create an environment for theater production, such that all relevant workspaces needed in the “production process”, are located at the same place within the city center. These workspaces are connected in such a way that they can allow “passersby” to easily move through connections, while maintaining the privacy of the crew.

• The Concept

The main idea was to create independent spaces while having connection and coherence. For this purpose, spaces were sewn together with a monolithic element in a porous corridor form. Here is the steps of concept formation.

• Different Parts Of The Complex

This work includes custom-designed spaces for writing rooms, decorating workshops, clothes sewing workshops, makeup test studios, practice rooms, sound recording studios, music practice rooms, graphic design studios, lounge, archive rooms, public cafés, art shops, small black box theaters, and outdoors small black rooms.

• The Model

• Facade And Materials

We use a combination of a cold material (light cream concrete) with a warm material (black steel windows) near the glass in facade of the building.

Residential Complex | Tehran, Iran

Bachelor of Architecture | Architectural Design 5 | University of Tehran | Spring 2018 Academic | Individual Supervisor: Dr. Alireza Einifar

• The Goal

To provide about 100 modular houses with one to four bedrooms spread in a multi-block residential complex without interrupting the city landmarks in the area.

• The Concept

The main idea was to build a set of blocks with different shapes to provide a variety of styles, where each block includes it’s own central yard, along with a large central yard for the whole complex. The differences in block shapes are based on the slope of the site and it’s location in the neighborhood. The height of the blocks are five to two floors from the north to the south of the site in a manner that provides natural light to all blocks.

• The Concept

The main idea was to build an optimum complex and plans in a small site. The other goal was to create an introverted place that has a central yard with the minimal access to street.

Besides, the slope of the site was used to create three different heights, which makes it more attractive.

• The Model

• Interior Design

The main focus in the interior design was the kitchen with the consideration of the standards of a modern kitchen. We used the same two primary colors as the exterior of the building in the kitchen.
