Dear All... Half term already out of the way which means the dark evenings are here and we’re getting into gear for Christmas. It seems like yesterday that new uniforms were being tried on for the start of the school year and yet, suddenly, we’re talking about the big day. As ever, there are lots of suggestions for doing some early shopping at places like Hestercombe, Montacute and the Willows & Wetlands Visitor Centre where you can park easily and shop at a leisurely pace - take a look at our Events calendar for more ideas. Of course, as you would expect at this time of year, Father Christmas can be seen in all sorts of places including trains, zoos and you can even get a chance to accompany him when he arrives at a garden centre! We’ll be back next month with loads of ideas for presents, family outings, theatres and ways to keep you calm in the build up to it all! Best wishes Tamsin

Book a RSPB Winter School Visit and Experience the Spectacular Starling Murmuration Treat your students to the ultimate wildlife ‘wow’ experience this winter, as part of the RSPB Somerset Schools on Reserves Programme. Mary Scott, RSPB Learning Officer said: “If you’ve watched those online videos of the incredible starling murmurations and wished you could take your children to experience it – then we’ve got the perfect opportunity for you! Seeing a murmuration on film is one thing, but being there in person is absolutely magical. Imagine waiting as the sun sets, watching eagerly for the first little flock to appear. Suddenly you see flocks arriving from every direction, bigger and bigger, merging into hundreds of thousands of starlings all flying softly so that all you can hear is the sound of their wings like waves on the shore. It’s a very special experience, which children will remember for life and its accessible right here on their Somerset doorstep.” Book a class onto an RSPB half-day school programme between Nov-Feb and finish the day by watching the starlings come home to roost at dusk (typically between 3.30pm – 5.00pm). RSPB programmes support a wide range of subjects from the National Curriculum, from pre-school to A-level age. The RSPB Schools on Reserves programme in Somerset, is delivered in partnership with Natural England. Visits take place on Natural England’s Shapwick Heath and RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve. Winter activities are usually based at the Avalon Marshes Centre with access to classrooms, coach parking, a teaching pond and Shapwick Heath. RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve has a large car park and toilet facilities.

Christmas at Noah's Ark

Here at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm we’re all set for our 2016 Christmas Season running from the 3-17 December, making your winter visit full of festive cheer and up-close animal encounters. On Saturday 3rd get your reindeer outfits ready for the very first ‘Reindeer Dash’, a family fun run around our zoo track along with a packed day of reindeer themed festive fun, choirs, reindeer feeds and Christmas crafts. Our hugely popular Christmas Nativities are also back this December. The performances will take place in our atmospheric Ark Arena and feature real animals! Saturday 10th December sees Redcliffe Brownies and Guides performing a traditional Nativity, complete with a host of popular sing-along

Christmas Carols. On Saturday 17th December, The Rock Project will be performing an exciting and dynamic rock Nativity. The show will feature well-known hits and will be Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm’s first ever rock concert! Our Education Team will also be running school Nativities every weekday from the 1st16th December. On 2nd and 3rd December, travel by train with the West Somerset Railway to the annual Dunster By Candlelight event and with a Fish and Chip option on the last service out of Bishops Lydeard, this really is a fantastic full evening of festivities. The Santa Express offers a round trip from either Bishops Lydeard or Minehead to Williton with Santa passing through the train, and handing each child a present whilst the train is steaming through the Quantocks.

The Santa Specials start from Minehead to Blue Anchor, with Santa greeting children in his station grotto, where an age appropriate present will be presented to the children. Other Christmas specials also include the ever popular Carol trains, which will be held on the evenings of 12th and 13th December. The services leave from either Minehead or Bishops Lydeard and travel to Williton, stopping at each station along the way to sing Christmas carols whilst accompanied by a brass band.

SOMERSET folk are being asked to nominate a child they feel deserves to accompany Santa on his journey to Monkton Elm this month. Father Christmas will be arriving at Taunton train station before travelling to Monkton Elm on Saturday, November 26 and the garden centre is looking for nominations for a child to accompany him on his journey. Andrew Pitman, Store Manager at the award-winning, independent, family-run garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, said: “Our VIP guest Santa will be arriving at the garden centre in style and we’re looking for a very special young person to accompany him and make sure he arrives safely to greet all the girls and boys. “We are looking for nominations of a child who has done something good for their community or for charity or who has overcome an illness or personal difficulty and deserves a real treat. “The nominated child will meet Santa at the train station

and travel with him to the garden centre. They will also be allowed to bring a friend and a parent or guardian.” Nominations can be made via email to a.pitman@monktonelm.co.uk and nominators should give details of who they wish to nominate and why. All emails must include clear contact details of the nominator. The winner will be picked at random and by being the nominator or nominee they have agreed to take part in publicity. The closing date for nominations is Monday, November 14. Santa’s arrival will take place at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre on Saturday, November 26 at 11.30am. Second chance to see the iconic Shrouds of the Somme THE iconic installation commemorating soldiers who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, which captivated millions when it was displayed in Exeter, is to be shown again. After hundreds of requests to extend the exhibition, organisers are bringing the breathtaking display to the grounds of Bristol Cathedral where it will be on show from 11-18 November, marking the Centenary of one of the bloodiest battles in history and remembering all 127,751 British soldiers who lost their lives. The display was created by Somerset Artist Rob Heard who wrapped and bound each figure in a hand-stitched shroud, crossing the name of every soldier who fell on that fateful first day off a list sourced from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. "The Shrouds, along with the Poppies at the Tower are perhaps the most memorable WWI commemorations this country has ever seen," said Mel Bradley MBE, Project Manager. "The public response to the shrouds from around the world has far exceeded all expectations. "We have a visitors book from Exeter with hundreds

and hundreds of personal and emotional remarks from people trying to express the impact the Shrouds has had on them. "This is reflected on our Facebook page with thousands of comments and video clip views of more than 10 million. It had a huge impact on the City of Exeter and has the potential to be even bigger in Bristol. The personal and community impact cannot be underestimated." Commodore Jake Moores OBE, Chairman of the Shrouds of the Somme, added: "The exhibition was one of the most powerful Acts of Remembrance I have seen throughout my military career and subsequent

"The raw emotion it produced in countless numbers of people, many of whom were in tears, some kneeling and praying and others stood rigidly to attention, was extremely moving. 4 November 1922 After many years of searching, British archaeologist Howard Carter discovers the tomb of Tutankhamum

Who was Tutankhamun? Although the treasures of Tutankhamun have made this young king known world wide, we really know very little about his life. We are not even sure who his parents were. Indeed, his parentage is one subject which keeps scholars busy, year after year, hence there are always new theories. Perhaps the most convincing and currently acceptable is that he was the son of the heretic king Akhenaten. His mother was not Akhenaten's famous wife Nefertiti, but probably a minor wife of the king. Another popular theory makes Tutankhamun the half brother of Akhenaten, as son of the Pharaoh Amenophis III and his queen Tiye. Whoever his parents were, it is certain that he was of the Royal House of Amarna, and that his claim to the throne was strong enough for him to succeed as Pharaoh of all Egypt in about 1333 BC, when he was only nine years old.

Life & Death of Tutankhamun His relationship to the heretic king Akhenaten almost certainly caused the downfall and possibly the death of the young king Tutankhamun. For his short reign of only nine years seems to have been taken up with rectifying the chaos and errors bequeathed to him by Akhenaten. Tutankhamun or as he was first called Tutankhaten, was born in a time of great change and upheaval. The 18th Dynasty of Egypt had, until the reign of Akhenaten, been a prosperous one. The Pharaohs had been great warriors. They had added to their country's wealth, and added to Egypt's territories, from which came valuable minerals and particularly gold. Akhenaten was the complete antithesis of these early kings. He was not a warrior, he was a dreamer and philosopher more interested in theoretical theology and the arts, than in mastering the art of kingship. He brought in great changes to a conservative land. He introduced the worship of the sun-disc, the Aten, as the official religion, removing the royal patronage from the god and priests of Amun. He moved the capital from Thebes and established a new capital 240 miles to the north, which he called Akhetaten "The Horizon of the Aten". He neglected to secure Egypt's borders, and chaos broke out, vassal princes broke away and the economy fell into ruins. Thus at his death, he had the establishment, the priesthood, and the people against him.

Egypt gradually settled back to stability....almost. We have very little evidence of what really went on at the time. But suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, in the young king's eighteenth year, he died.

Forensic examination of Tutankhamun's mummy has thrown little light on the probable cause of death. X-rays of his skull have revealed that he suffered a severe blow to the head. The wound, however, shows some signs of healing, and thus early observers have dismissed it. It now seems probable that this healing could have taken place while Tutankhamun was in a coma, and that the blow was sufficient to have killed him. Whether the blow was sustained by accident or by intent cannot be proved. Circumstantial evidence, however, suggests that the young king, influenced as he undoubtedly was by his early years at the court of Akhenaten, may have shown signs of moving his policies more in line with those of his predecessor. This would have been sufficient to cause alarm, not only to the court but also to the priesthood, and it may have been to prevent chaos returning to Egypt that Tutankhamun was killed. What is clear is that Tutankhamun died unexpectedly and without heirs. His own tomb was unfinished and it seems that he was buried in a tomb originally intended for Ay.

With these words Howard Carter described his first glimpse of what is undoubtedly the greatest archaeological discovery ever made, not only to Egyptology, but to the world of archaeology

in general. Nothing before nor since, has ever equalled and probably never will equal the splendour and magnificence of the tomb of Tutankhamun, a little known Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty. Until then, he was known by only one or two minor objects that had lain in museums attracting little attention, but from November 1922 his name was a household word. He was the symbol of ancient Egypt. Tutankhamun's tomb lies in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes. It had been lost after the construction of the tomb of Ramesses VI, the debris of which covered the entrance. It was discovered in November 1922 by Howard Carter after many years of fruitless searching in the Valley. Howard Carter's work was funded by the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon. The tomb was found after a workman cleared some debris and uncovered steps. These steps led down to a sealed doorway behind which was the splendour and magnificence of Tutankhamun's legacy.

Necessary lessons in Debt? Six out of ten Brits wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing any money issues with their children. New research from financial services provider 118 118 Money has found that 61% of Brits wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to their children about any money worries. In the YouGov study of 2,030 adults, respondents were asked how comfortable they would feel discussing various money issues with people in their lives. 12 Parent Talk November 2016

If they didn’t have these people or money issues in their lives, they were asked to imagine they did. The research found that 40% would never talk to their children about their credit card debt. As well as this, almost half would be unwilling to speak to their children about gambling debt, with a further 42% reluctant to discuss their unpaid fines. When it comes to other money worries the public would

never discuss with their children, 40% would never broach the topics of unpaid bills or store card debt respectively, while 38% would be unwilling to talk about needing help with rent or mortgage payments. The top five money issues Brits would never talk to their children about: 1. Gambling debt (47%) 2. Unpaid fines (42%) 3. Credit card debt (40%) 4. Store card debt (40%) 5. Unpaid bills (40%)

The research also found that some Brits would feel comfortable opening up about certain financial worries with their children. Some 12% said they would talk about needing help to pay unexpected expenses, such as car or home maintenance, with just under a tenth willing to talk about their credit card debt, unpaid bills or bank account overdrafts.

Commenting on the study, Mark Burgess, Chief Operating Officer at 118 118 Money, said: “It’s concerning to see that even in today’s society parents still shelter their children from money worries rather than speaking openly about these problems. “We believe parents should talk more honestly with their children about difficult financial

situations; this openness can help educate young people in how to avoid money issues themselves. “Family can be a great source of consolation when it comes to our financial fears, and regardless of the severity of your money worry, our advice would be that it’s always better to reach out and speak to others, rather than let the issue escalate in private.”

How to be a modern Pincess Disney, together with thousands of UK parents, has for the first time defined the traits of a modern Princess in a set of ten principles, which have been released to encourage young girls to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.
