About NWAIS

THE NWAIS VISION

NWAIS shapes the future of education by fostering transformative school leadership and by advancing, energizing and sustaining regional independent schools.

THE ASSOCIATION’S CORE VALUES

As the association of schools works together to advance the NWAIS mission, it is guided by core values. These essential principles enrich our relationships, guide our professional development programs, shape our member services and inform our process for school accreditation.

Healthy, just, diverse and inclusive communities

NWAIS understands that schools are more than institutions. NWAIS schools are good citizens and active members of virtual, global networks of schools. Collaboration, collegiality, acknowledgement of interconnectedness, and regard for the search for knowledge and understanding characterize our schools. Whatever their size, type, philosophy or program, NWAIS schools are committed to creating and enhancing environments for their students and staff that are safe, equitable, diverse and welcoming.

Continuous improvement

NWAIS values inquiry, innovation and a dedication to continuous improvement as essential to school success. The association views ongoing professional development as necessary for

progress, and offers members a rich program of workshops and conferences each year. NWAIS holds that nothing is more important to a school’s sustained improvement than the process of accreditation, which it believes is the most powerful agent for helping schools advance to their next level of excellence.

Transformative, visionary leadership

NWAIS actively promotes strengthening current school leadership and developing future school leadership. With coaching and training, good leaders can become great, and great leaders can become transformative. NWAIS is committed to providing these opportunities to current and potential school leaders wherever they may be on their career path.

The positive impact of independent school education

NWAIS celebrates the time-tested independent school commitment to educating the whole child through intentional programs based upon strong scholastic, civic, moral and ethical values. The association champions the unique experience and distinctive culture that every independent school offers as fundamental to student and school success. The association advances independent school education by encouraging schools to experiment and innovate in program and pedagogy so their students can become lifelong learners and successful citizens who

contribute to the common good.

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

NWAIS schools are expected to maintain communities that are safe and supportive for all their members. All schools in the association shall create and foster a program, culture, and inclusive community of students, families, trustees, faculty and staff who embrace diverse perspectives, cultures, backgrounds and identities. Schools may demonstrate their commitment to care in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: curricular study, extracurricular programming, articulated institutional policies, a nondiscrimination statement (including

sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes), and traditions and practices that affirm the school as a healthy, respectful, welcoming environment for all.

ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NWAIS SCHOOLS

Schools that are mission-appropriate for the association support the mission and core values of NWAIS and abide by the following:

Commitment to the public good

As nonprofit organizations under IRS code 501(c)(3), NWAIS schools provide for the public good by offering an independent educational option for a wide continued on next page

variety of families and by giving back to the community through service, economic development, organizational citizenship and providing models of quality organizations, curriculum and instruction.

Effective governance and operations

Success of NWAIS schools is secured through governance structures that provide fiduciary responsibility and strategic oversight, ensuring long-term viability. These structures work in partnership with administrative teams that effectively manage daily operations, ensuring sustainability for faculty, staff and families.

Primary focus of academic education

NWAIS only accredits schools whose primary focus is academic education, and accredits schools in their entirety. Missions, philosophies and goals must articulate a commitment to academic preparation, inspiring and preparing students for future educational opportunities. Curricula must be relevant and current, with pedagogies based on present understanding of learning. NWAIS does not accredit schools with a primary focus that is therapeutic, wilderness-based or athletic.

Commitment to the best interests of children

NWAIS schools demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the best interests of students and families. This includes commitments to long-term sustainability, continuity of educational experience

through graduation, promoting a safe and inclusive community, providing adequate advising and counseling resources, and comprehensive residential programming where applicable.

NWAIS NON-DISCRIMINATION STATEMENT

Member schools do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, disability, national or ethnic origin, or other legally protected status in admission or in providing access to rights, privileges, programs, or activities available to all students and their families. Similarly, schools do not discriminate in hiring or employment practices. Singlesex institutions, religious schools, or institutions serving students with learning differences or other special needs implement policies appropriate to their missions.

THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS

Our nationally-recognized, growthbased accreditation process is meant to foster reflection and ongoing improvement in our schools. NWAIS accreditation is an ongoing process that helps each school clarify and enact its own vision, mission, and values to grow and develop. Accreditation uses peer review to promote quality standards without standardization, ensuring each school remains true to its values while delivering a high-quality educational experience. The association has developed 13 robust standards for success. Membership and accreditation in NWAIS is voluntary.

AFFILIATE VS. ACCREDITATION

NWAIS has several categories of schools and educational programs. Schools apply for affiliation or to join the path to accreditation and are admitted as an affiliate, subscriber or candidate school. Affiliate schools are the only level not eligible for accreditation. All other levels are assessed based on their path to accreditation, and are expected to steadily move forward in the process.

Schools become accredited by moving through the path to accreditation (From subscriber to candidate to accredited). Accredited schools complete an intensive process of self and peer evaluation. The process is rooted in a series of standards, developed by NWAIS, and based on Independent School best practices. The process is intense, reflective, growth-based and is powerful in its ability to move schools forward in their development.

ACCREDITED SCHOOLS

Accreditation through NWAIS ensures schools have the leadership and resources to support their missions into the future. Accredited schools demonstrate congruence between the school’s stated mission and the actual program and services, as well as adherence to NWAIS Core Values. They have adequate resources to achieve their objectives — currently and in the foreseeable future. Accredited schools are voting members that have been accredited by the NWAIS Board of

Governors upon recommendation of the Accreditation Committee.

SUBSCRIBER, CANDIDATE, AFFILIATE

Subscriber schools are in the earlier stages of development working towards full accreditation. Candidate schools are voting members that are working to meet the standards for full membership and accreditation within five years of its election as a Candidate Member. Affiliates are schools or educational programs not meeting all the criteria for full accreditation but aligned with NWAIS Core Values.

WHY FAMILIES SHOULD CARE ABOUT ACCREDITATION

Schools that are accredited through NWAIS have demonstrated their alignment with the rigorous standards for governance, operations and school programs that ensure that the institution is strong and sustainable. Candidate and subscriber schools have shown that they are hitting important milestones on their pathway to accreditation and have demonstrated a commitment to NWAIS values and continuous improvement. Affiliate schools have joined the association and benefit from the programs and services that NWAIS provides, supporting their ongoing development. Families should feel assured that NWAIS schools are welcoming and diverse institutions that will be a wonderful place for your child to learn and grow. ■

Real-world projects matter here. From designing adaptive toys to launching weather balloons, students apply their ideas to real-world challenges.

Passion-powered learning. We create space for students to dive deep into what excites them—from coding and robotics to storytelling and photography.

Support that goes deeper. Our program meets both the emotional and intellectual needs of gifted learners, helping them build confidence and resilience.

A community where it’s cool to be smart. Students are free to be themselves in a place that celebrates intellect, creativity, and belonging.

Teachers who truly see your child. Our educators bring both expertise and heart, designing learning experiences that spark growth and connection. •

It’s rigorous (of course). Subjects are integrated (as in life). And it’s really fun.

We hear it often: St. Thomas School students stand out. They are distinguished by an uncommon maturity, a sense of responsibility, and self-discipline. Daily lessons on core virtues provide the foundation; daily opportunities to lead and collaborate let them turn their learning into action. Long after they leave our campus, our students are distinguished as much by the quality of their character as by the quality of their intellect.

For nearly 75 years and 11,000 daily chapels we have collected our community’s children and taught them what it means to be global citizens. And we continue to serve families that believe leadership, character, and community are essential components of their child’s education.
