From the Director

As we celebrate the city’s 150th birthday this year, I am happy to report that parks and recreation is alive and well here in Plano. Since 1968, our essential services have helped unite people and strengthen the community through health and wellness programs, accessible parks and playgrounds, partnerships, and employment opportunities. Combined, the system also provides a special sense of belonging for residents of all ages.

I would like to extend a special welcome to our seasonal, parttime staff members who are so integral to our summer operations. Hiring events held earlier this year resulted in dozens of new hires to serve as lifeguards, recreation aides, camp counselors, and other roles. Whether you are new to the team or returning for another summer, we are excited to work with you.

In addition to the trademark summer programs you have grown to love, we continue to find more ways to get out and get moving. Families can see a different side of nature with new nighttime outings at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve (page 28). Children of all abilities can also learn how to ride the big waves on the FlowRider at Jack Carter Pool (pages 13 and 23). For the older kids at our recreation centers, we have created Recreation Youth Advisory Committees to give our younger patrons a voice for helping shape our policies and programs. Applications are available at planoparks.org.

Plan on staying poolside this summer? Consider a family membership for unlimited access to our facilities (monthly packages start at just $49 for Plano families). Whether you are looking for a summer fun outlet or a path to personal achievement, we are here for you. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay upto-date on department news and happenings.

Here’s to another fun, safe and memorable summer!
