Low Cost House

(Academic work) - 2022

Vernacular architecture has evolved over time. For convenience, the architecture in Terai has started replacing traditional thatched roofs with modern roofing systems. The aim of our project is to restore standard construction technology and present it in a new structure that can provide passive cooling to the hot area of Terai. The roof is the main hero of the project, arranged in such a way that during summer the warm air rises up and moves outside the residence whereas the cool air, due to its lower density, will remain inside the house.

Step 1:

Bamboo structural frame provides strong and flexible design making it a sustainable building material.

Step 2:

Timber walls provide structural support and is an excellent insulator, reducing energy costs.

Step 3:

Bamboo roof framing being flexible and light weight makes it resistant to environmental stresses ,adding to the durability.

Step 4:

Thatch roof functions as a natural, insulating, and cost-effective roof-

Design Brief

The platform is raised 2’ above the ground in order to protect from rodents, insects, and flooding (if the house is located in such an area). The user enters from the southern side of the residence. The verandah at this house surrounds the southern and southeastern sides. Approaching from the outside, you’ll first come to the kitchen, which is connected to the living room. The living room has a wide accordion door that can be opened to let in the fresh air and green environment right outside the house. The private bedrooms are arranged on the north-eastern side , distinct from the public area. And the toilet is detached from the main block. The choice for materials is solely based on the traditional construction technology. The platform is raised using the steel posts connected to the bamboo posts which binds the entire building. The envelope is done by timber planks. The roof is supported by bamboo structure over which the thatch roof is laid over. The wide opening in the living room opens to the deck where you can sit and observe the serene landscape outside the house.

Open and Linear Circulation

This design simplifies navigation and infrastructure, offering a flexible, cost-effective solution for budgetconscious projects.

Cross Ventilation

Cross ventilation in low-cost buildings enhances airflow and natural cooling, reducing energy costs and improving indoor air quality with strategic design

Visual Linkage (Inside-Outside)

Connects indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing openness, natural light, and views, while promoting a harmonious and inviting living environment.

Passive Cooling Technique

Reduce temperatures using natural ventilation, shading, and thermal mass, minimizing energy use and enhancing comfort.
