Yeung Siu Fong graduated from RMIT University with a BA in fine art. Yeung’s creative practice attempts to recognise the ‘body’ and see it as an object in order to make observations from different perspectives. She explores relationships between the soul and the physique and expresses her ‘body’ via various media. Her recent work comprises paintings, ceramics, video, sound, and installation.

Para Site

Para Site is delighted to collaborate with Hong Kong artist Yeung Siu Fong to present her solo exhibition ‘Questscape’ at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024. Yeung recently expanded her artistic practice to include live performance to engage with various private and public settings. She considers her body as both a medium and a vessel, exploring relationships between its physicality and her inner self. Through pushing the limits of her body, Yeung’s work subverts the idealistic notion of a body as something ‘complete’, ‘healthy’, or ‘human’, and prompts the audience to see, feel, and think about a multitude of bodily experiences together.

For this presentation, Yeung’s performance is transposed for the first time into an installation setting, combining mixed media paintings and objects. The series of autobiographical paintings emerged after Yeung’s diagnosis of a tumour in 2021, reflecting on her personal journey to redefine her identity and reshape her relationship and feelings towards her body. As meditative studies, the paintings reveal a complex network of nerves and inner workings of the body. The audience’s gaze is directed towards the intricate monochromatic web of lines, forms, and textures, accentuating the physical vulnerability and its fluidity and impact across different parts and functions of the body. Yeung’s work situates our bodies as sites of transformation to challenge normative conventions.

Through a structure of entangled PVC tubes evocative of veins, channels, and energy pathways, Yeung expands her exploration to access our inner realms and establish connections with the uncharted dimensions of our existence. The intricate network of tubes in her artwork serves as a metaphorical conduit of the hidden aspects of our being, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries that lie within. The predominant use of red in this inner landscape fosters a corporeal dialogue, inviting the audience to embark on a journey into the ‘heart’ of the presentation. The multisensory presentation questions the projections and perceptions of illness in modern society and encourages a more inclusive understanding of the body. By heightening the sensitivity and pushing the limits of her own body, the artist challenges the ableist notion that illness or abnormality should be viewed as an obstacle to be feared or seen as a helpless condition. Instead, Yeung foregrounds the experience of illness as a constitutive part of the human condition and reveals the strength and resilience that can emerge from this process.

On Friday, 29 March 2024 at 3 pm, the artist will stage a live performance at the Para Site booth.
