curatorial statement

How can artists address the intertwined relationships between global economic infrastructure, international trade, and commercial sponsorship that underlie the production of contemporary art? Creative Operational Solutions offers an initial set of responses, provocations, and positions.

Curated by Prem Krishnamurthy and Cosmin Costinas, the exhibition emerges out of Container Artist Residency 01, an artistin-residence program onboard commercial cargo ships. Identifying the shipping industry as a driving cultural and economic force in the contemporary world, the project creates a space for artists to explore their practice within this context.

The exhibition premieres the work of the inaugural edition’s seven resident artists: Mari Bastashevski, Tyler Coburn, Revital Cohen & Tuur Van Balen, Erin Diebboll, Ferenc Gróf, Christopher Page, and Samson Young. Their contributions are exhibited in dialogue with works by James T. Hong, Zheng Mahler, and Guo Xi & Zhang Jianling that explore related themes of maritime shipping and economic relations within the region.

Materials related to Hong Kong’s early history as a major shipping port and its role in the opium trade are presented in a historical section curated by Qu Chang, which also features work by Sawangwongse Yawnghwe.

Framing the entire residency program, its financial underpinnings, and conceptual structure, a further “meta-display” makes transparent the logistics of the project.

Founded by artist Maayan Strauss, Container Artist Residency is conceived as a distributed artwork in the form of an institutional and operational residency that

foregrounds global commerce as the artist’s own immediate work environment. This first edition is realized in partnership with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.

The seven artists-in-residence were selected by the project’s curator, Prem Krishnamurthy, together with a jury consisting of Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, Niels Van Tomme, and Xiaoyu Weng. Each artist was invited to travel with a ZIM cargo vessel on a route of their choice, and provided with an onboard studio space, accommodation in a ship’s cabin, an honorarium, a return travel allowance, and a production budget with which to create new work.

The diverse artworks on view here explore technology’s effects on geopolitics, the linguistics and semiotics of maritime shipping, the role of the artist as laborer, personal and collective memory, surveillance, and cooperation with industrial entities, among other themes.

Appropriating ZIM’s corporate tagline as its title—complete with its ambivalent resonances within the context of contemporary art—Creative Operational Solutions will open in its second iteration at MoBY (Museums of Bat Yam), Israel, in Spring 2017.

The geopolitics of commerce is everywhere and wants everything.

Art has always existed within commercial exchange. Even those artworks that are not exhibited or sold exist within the system of commercial exchange, as artists pay to live. The materials for their life and work move, and commerce moves them. Moving on ships in international waters, they land in special, extra-state jurisdictional zones; they arrive in their box store; they arrive in a gallery; they arrive in your home.

This work, Container Artist Residency, removes the traditional mediators in this trade. Commercial exchange does not underlie this artwork; instead, commercial exchange is the medium of the artwork. The site stretches between oceans, account ledgers, subjectivities, and networks of cultural capital.

The project began as an outgrowth of necessity. An intercontinental journey on a freight ship from Haifa to New Jersey during graduate school served both as a photographic project and an affordable means of transportation. Photographs from this trip are on display in the exhibition.

To exist inside commerce, the work must use the forms of commerce. Commerce demands exchange: publicity is traded for funding. The project budget is displayed here as a component of the work. The blueprint of the work is the business proposal displayed on a monitor in the exhibition opening. Emails are the key labor that realized the proposal.

This administrative, digital labor is presented as sculpture, a stack of printed PDFs containing every email I sent regarding the project.

To exist inside the art world, the work must use the forms of art. The project adopts the shape of a public image machine and of

an artist residency. It exists as a transitory installation in which artists are positioned on cargo ships among other laborers and commodities. It also takes the shape of an immersive artwork for artists, rather than for object-oriented collectors. Finally, it takes the shape of an exhibition in a gallery space.

All of these forms, experiences, and exchanges are the work. Its form shifts between seemingly-opposed poles. Between these poles, there is capital and there is the sea.

Mari Bastashevski

Mari Bastashevski (b.1980 St. Petersburg; based in Switzerland) creates work that moves between investigative research, art, and journalism, deliberately blurring the boundaries between these practices.

Bastashevski’s Zim™ reflects the labyrinthine conditions of its own production and presentation. Within the complex framing of the project, the artist’s work while onboard the residency is a part of another art project— namely, the residency program itself. Given the framework of Bastashevski’s contract with ZIM, the artist must function as an actor whose production supports multiple PR initiatives.

Playing with these “rules of engagement,” Bastashevski authored an artwork that performs the labor of the artist by taking one photograph every five minutes for an average of eight hours a day over its entire lifespan, starting from the artist’s studio in Switzerland, through the residency trip on ZIM Qingdao, and for the remainder of its journey in the planned exhibitions and contractually-stipulated auction.

Filled with ocean water from the Suez Canal, the work functions as a closed loop, a predetermined process that concludes with the eventual collector’s task to break the container with the tools provided.

Tyler Coburn

Tyler Coburn (b.1983 New York; based in New York) works in performance, installation, writing, and sound. His practice engages with trends in computing and manufacturing, tensions between waged and leisure time, the self and social media personas, as well as the virtual world and its material infrastructures.

Coburn’s Resonator (2016–17) is a three-part project exploring the phenomenon of resonant frequency and its destructive effects. The first part, a collaboration with Byron Peters, exists as a .zip file of schematics and documents available for download at http://amnudenda.com/3/Da.zip.

This package accompanies a series of personal performances in Hong Kong by the artist around the sympathies and vulnerabilities of mutual resonance. Finally, Coburn has produced two lead ingots cast from tuning forks, created from rifle cartridges sold by American company Independence Ammo and manufactured by Israeli Military Industries. One is on view in the show, while the other remains with Coburn in perpetuity. Through a conceptual mapping of frequencies, perception, and production, the project indexes the physical trajectories of these bullets while setting them on a new course.

Revital Cohen & Tuur Van Balen

Revital Cohen and Tuur Van Balen (b.1981 Jerusalem; b.1981 Leuven; both based in London) examine and reinvent systems of industrial production. Through sculpture, installation, and film, they expose these processes as cultural, social and political practices.

In their installation at Para Site, a set of stainless steel sheets are electroplated with dissolved tin, nickel, and gold solutions. The resulting abstract forms suggest 17th-century Dutch seascapes depicting the early commercialization of the sea, while also indexing the contemporary materials and processes of mass manufacturing industries, which extract minerals in Africa for transformation into Chinese electronics.

Accompanying these works, Dissolution (I Know Nothing) comprises a different form of filmic seascape, assembling collaged and fragmented footage that connects objects, places, and times from both sides of the Indian ocean. Gunpowder, dissolved minerals, blinking LEDs, and personal and colonial histories melt together in a reflection upon global capital, supply chains, and flows of influence.

Erin Diebboll

Erin Diebboll (b.1984 Massachusetts; based in New York) works in large-scale drawing, engaging with concepts of history and time to map familiar and imagined spaces based on personal memories, historical narratives, and constructed archives.

Diebboll’s Voyage 51 East catalogues a speculative cross-section of goods transported by the vessel ZIM Haifa en route from China to the USA. Responding to the uncertainty and opacity surrounding the precise contents of shipping containers—which remain mostly unknown, even to the ships’ crews—the artist has created a set of drawings visualizing each shipping container’s load according to their official packing lists. Collapsing minimal form and iconic representation, the meticulous, hand-rendered artworks enact the labor of shipping’s repetitive actions: the unseen loading and unloading of unknown cargo that powers global trade.

Ferenc Gróf (b. 1972, Pécs; based in Paris) considers questions of contemporary political representations and ideological design through text-based works within art, graphic design, and pedagogy.

Gróf’s installation at Para Site hijacks the semiotics of global maritime shipping, creating graphic interventions that expose the systems of reference underlying the industry.

Repurposing the standardized method of tariff nomenclature for identifying traded products, Grof’s Harmonized System renders this encyclopedia of customs monikers as a typo­ graphic wallpaper. A new typeface based on the repetition of the letter “x,” the unknown value in an equation, constructs an overall pattern with legible variations. Gróf’s accompanying Flags of Convenience are created from photos the artist took during his journey aboard Zim Shekou, which appear similar to the civil insignias of nations with open registries for ship owners. Reflecting the circumstance that more than half of today’s merchant vessels fly a so-called “flag of convenience,” these fallen flags are installed upon the floor—in reference to an iconic Soviet realist painting by Geliy Korzhev— suggesting the collapse of national boundaries and fixed identities within the contemporary geopolitical paradigm.

Hangzhou-based artists Guo Xi (b. 1988, Jiangsu) and Zhang Jianling (b.1986, Hubei) work both together and individually in various media, from installation, painting, performance, sculpture, to text, often showing a particular interest in ideological formation and its relation to individual worldviews.

The Grand Voyage is a long-term collaboration between Guo and Zhang, which began with an 86 day world cruise on “Costa Atlantica” between March to May 2015 and materialized in a large-scale, accumulative work that blurs the boundaries between the virtual and the real in an attempt to establish a new order of imagination.

The work takes the form of a labyrinthine narrative that presents a constellation of texts, images, and objects unpacked through the stories of one thousand characters and their respective environments. The different components can be read as chapters of a non-linear travel novel, with both visible fragments and invisible clues and connections between the disparate elements. Hong (b. 1970 Minnesota; based in Taiwan) is a filmmaker and artist who has produced works about topics as diverse as Heidegger, Spinoza, Japanese biological warfare, the Opium Wars, and a feature-length documentary about nationalism and disputed territory in the East China Sea. Hong’s Three Arguments about the Opium War looks at these crucial events and their continuous legacy in modern Asia through a double-channel video and a collection of objects. The First Opium War was the critical, inaugu­ ral confrontation between the Qing Dynasty and the British Empire. The conflict also marks the birth of the colony of Hong Kong and is generally considered the beginning of the Century of Humiliation, a period of confrontations between China and Western powers and Japan, respectively, and is a key component of Chinese nationalist ideology and of the country’s understanding of its recent history, its place in the world, and the direction of its future development. Presented in the style of a war museum, Three Arguments proposes an incipient choice—an extra-moral decision that persists nearly 200 years after the First Opium War.

Christopher Page (b. 1984 London; based in Athens) explores abstraction and representation by combining hard-edged compositional strategies with illusionistic painting techniques to think through contemporary theories of vision and their relationship to exchanges of bodies and capital.

Page’s project Containment or Integration is a multi-form work, made in the months after the artist moved to Athens.

As Containment, the work comprises a trilogy of what appear to be identical shipping crates. When all of the panels making up these crates are disassembled and hung on the wall, the piece transforms into an extended, frieze-like painting called Integration.

The geometric composition of these paintings mirror the physical structure on the panels’ backs while also recalling the metopes and triglyphs of a classical frieze. The white paint used in the work was applied by migrants seeking asylum in Athens, who were paid by the hour at Greece’s current minimum wage. Applied on top of this, Page’s airbrushed, trompe l’oeil drop-shadow transforms the painting’s materiality into an illusionistic plane, revealing the work as a multi-part meditation on displacement.

Samson Young (b.1979 Hong Kong; based in Hong Kong) works with sound and composition as his primary media.

An extensive process of research and fieldwork, including cognitive and spatial mapping through “sound sketches” and recordings, underlies all of his artworks..

Young’s What the lighthouses taught me consists of multiple drawings made during his residency. The artist thinks of them like “long-exposure photographs” that capture his experience of sound, language, and time on paper. Produced over multiple sittings on many days at sea, each sound sketch translates aural stimuli, ambient phenomena, and specific occurrences into a discrete vocabulary. Many of the sound sketches were created on the control bridge, where the crew mans the vessel, while others were composed on the deck and reflect the persistent audio of the ocean. Zheng Mahler is a Hong Kong-based duo composed of artist Royce Ng (b. 1983, Melbourne) and anthropologist Daisy Bisenieks (b. 1983, Melbourne) who work together on projects that explore art’s boundaries within broader processes.

Zheng Mahler’s A Season in Shell (2013–2016) is a chain of transactions and products, starting from their collaborative engagement with the Bull, a Somali businessman and asylum seeker they met in the Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong between 2013–2014.

The work joins a geographically disparate chain of value adding, whereby the artists and the Bull moved two metric tons of abalone shells from Berbera to Dubai, Zurich, and finally to China. Following the disappearance of the Bull from Hong Kong in 2014, the artists processed some of the remaining shells to extract the calcium carbonate for use in a porcelain glaze.

At Para Site the artists are showing 230 Jingdezhen porcelain objects, glazed with abalone foam extracted from the original shipment, and an accompanying film essay and poem—a tapestry of multiple entwined narratives, including the lifecycle of the abalone, its value adding chain, the migratory journey of the Bull, the working experience between the artists and the Bull, and other elements, which are woven together with the experiential framework of the French surrealist poet Arthur Rimbaud’s poem, A Season in Hell.

The exhibition’s research historical section, Black Spice, takes opium, one of the most valuable commodities in global trade of the 18th and 19th centuries, as its subject matter.

The history of the opium trade is connected decisively with the birth and early period of Hong Kong—a colony created by the British Empire, following the First Opium War, in order to facilitate the sale of this commodity to China. Furthermore, this trade relates to the long period of decay of the Qing dynasty and turbulent social changes at the start of modernity in China. These histories and their cultural implications form an important background to the contemporary history of globalization and the emergence of new economic and political powers in Asia and far beyond. With its resonance to contemporary commodity aesthetics, “opium” is a subject of historical consequence beyond its mere trade.

Interwoven with the historical documents, reproductions, and objects of this research, Sawangwongse Yawnghwe (b. 1971, Shan State, Burma), produces a new work that follows routes of the drug trade between the Golden Triangle (a region comprising the Shan State in Burma, Northern Thailand, and Northwestern Laos, where opium production has fueled political instability for decades) and Hong Kong, before being distributed worldwide. Yawnghwe’s work centers on heroin, a purified derivative and modern incarnation of opium, as an extension of the drug’s long history and trade in Hong Kong.

6 Tyler Coburn Resonator, 2016–17 Part of a three-part project: two ingots, cast from tuning forks with frequencies 256Hz and 274Hz that, if struck at the same time, generate an interval of 18Hz, or the resonant frequency of the eye, made with lead from 5.56 × 45mm NATO 55 Grain M193 Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail bullets sold by Independence Ammo, United States…and manufactured by Israeli Military Industries, the first to go into the personal collection of the artist, and the second to be given to ZIM for eventual sale, with proceeds donated to a charity or good cause, as per the stipulations of its contract. 共 鳴 器 ， 2016 －17
