odern medical science has spent billions of dollars to find the best drugs and treatments for treating diabetes, but as we can see the disease is still spreading like an epidemic. According to reports, about 347 million people worldwide have diabetes and is the seventh leading cause of deaths in the world.

In this scenario, a holistic science like Ayurveda can make a big impact in dealing with the prevalence of diabetes worldwide. The ancient texts of Ayurveda explain the causes, factors, prevention, management and treatment of diabetes in detail. This explains that we had a comprehensive plan to deal with this disease from the Vedic ages. Ayurvedic texts mentions about 20 types of pramehas and diabetes (madhumeha) is one among them.

Why is diabetes so prevalent?

A few decades ago, diabetes was supposed to be a disease that affected the affluent. Not anymore.

The disease no longer differentiates income, class or status – it has now become prevalent in every strata of society. The consumption of excess sweet, heavy, and oily and kapha-aggravating foods, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle and stress, are responsible for the sudden increase in diabetes worldwide.

Ayurveda can play a big role in the prevention and management of diabetes says Dr. Partap Chauhan.

Within a span of two to three decades we have witnessed a drastic change in our eating habits and lifestyle. Our sugar intake and the consumption of harmful oils from junk and processed foods have increased manifold. The love for a comfortable lifestyle and decreased physical activities are also compounding the problem by interfering with the metabolism process and leading to obesity. With so many unhealthy reasons, it's no wonder diabetes is becoming so prevalent today.

How fatal is diabetes?

Usually, diabetics tend to think that everything is fine if they are taking medications and their blood sugar levels are under control.

Diabetes is known as maharoga in Ayurveda. It is not limited to an increase in blood sugar but affects the entire body. Diabetes gradually sucks away the ojas (vitality) from the body and makes it weak. Ojas is the essence of all the tissues and signifies your physical and mental strength. If your ojas is reduced, your immunity is compromised as well.

Therefore, diabetics have to bear with complications and disorders of the heart, kidneys, eyes and the nervous system among others.

Due to the impairment of the body tissues (dhatus), diabetes also brings along a host of other degenerative diseases. It is common among people with this disease to suffer from problems such as indigestion, constipation and blockage of body channels. It is important that diabetics understand the seriousness of this disease, and not take it lightly or be careless.

Usually, diabetics tend to think that everything is fine if they are taking medications and their blood sugar levels are under control. One fine day, when they find that their heart, kidney or liver is not working properly, they suddenly realized that it's too late. It is important for diabetics to ensure that apart from keeping their blood sugar in check, they must also take foods, herbs and medicines to replenish the loss of tissues and vitality in their body.

Hope in Ayurveda Ayurvedic medications not only bring down the blood sugar level but also work on strengthening the pancreas. Apart from that, it nourishes the tissues (dhatus), restores the body's immunity, strengthens the digestive system and eliminates toxins from the body. Just taking medicines is not enough. Regular physical exercises and eating the right foods is also an important part of treatment. The state of your mental health is also plays a big role when you deal with diabetes.

Hence, Ayurveda provides the best solutions on the physical, mental and spiritual level to treat diabetes.

The first and foremost rule that diabetics must follow is not to try to treat themselves with selfmedication. Since only a trained Ayurvedic physician can understand the complications related to a particular individual according to the state of the disease, prakriti (nature), age etc., it is always recommended to consult a trained physician. When it comes to Ayurveda one size does not fit all.

It is of utmost importance that you carefully follow the dietary and lifestyle guidelines given by your Ayurvedic practitioner along with the medications. Generally, when patients go for Ayurvedic treatment they would be already taking allopathic medicines to control blood sugar. It is not advisable to completely stop taking them on your own. You can reduce the dosage gradually in consultation with your Ayurvedic physician.

Diabetics can benefit a lot from the holistic science of Ayurveda.

In my opinion, it can play a great role in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes.

Jessica is an American psychotherapist based in Florida who specializes in helping people with anxiety, depression and grief. She enhances her client's healing by teaching them simple Ayurvedic self-care practices. Dr. Partap Chauhan and Jessica are publishing their first book together this summer on Ayurvedic Self-Care. We were fortunate to have a short interview with her when she was in India, below are the excerpts.

What got you interested in Ayurveda?

Twelve years ago, I used to be a high-flying, fast moving, strategic marketing executive working for major Fortune 500 companies in the USA and abroad. I had not heard of Ayurveda, nor would have been interested in practicing it at that point in my life. But something tragic happened in my life and everything changed.

Ayurveda taught me that my father died of a broken heart. Yes, he was eating the right foods and exercising to keep his body healthy.

But, he did not take care of his mind.

My 55-year-old dear father, a triathlete vegetarian who did not drink or smoke, suddenly died of a heart attack. I was not only deeply saddened but totally astonished. That day my life changed forever. I was determined to find out why that happened to my father. I asked doctors of allopath, Chinese medicine doctors and Tibetan medicine doctors – they each had their own explanation but no answer was complete until I found Ayurveda.

Ayurveda taught me that my father died of a broken heart. Yes, he was eating the right foods and exercising to keep his body healthy. But, he did not take care of his mind. He was going through a divorce after 33 years of marriage, and his heart was literally breaking. Once I learned this Ayurvedic explanation, I felt such passion to learn Ayurveda. I promised myself that I would learn this mind-body medicine, and that if I could help even just one person from not dying, then I would honor my father in the best way I knew how. I left Corporate America ten years ago, and I never looked back. My journey into Ayurveda had begun, and I am still on it, learning more each year.

What is your personal experience of Ayurveda and how it changed your life?

Ayurveda worked in steady, gentle and subtle ways in my life. Ayurveda gradually helped me find balance, grace, and gentleness in my life. By learning how to use Ayurvedic self-care practices, I learned to actually like myself more. I learned what it felt like to feel in balance, and out of balance. I learned how to slow down. I learned how to appreciate my unique mind-body type, instead of

trying to change myself to become something that I am not. I learned how to listen to my own inner voice, to my heart's calling, and to honor that.

And, I learned that until I healed myself, I could not help others to heal.

How can we combine Ayurveda and Psychotherapy to increase the effectiveness of psychotherapy?

Ayurveda complements my psychotherapy practice in a very natural and easy way. For example, if I am working with a pitta type, I know that they tend to like to be in control, are very smart, sometimes bossy, natural leaders, and think they are always smarter than everyone else (which they often are!). So, as their therapist, I ask them questions to help them arrive at their own answers, instead of telling them directly what to do (which they rebel against). In contrast, if I am working with a kapha type or vata type, I change my approach according to their dominant prakriti (nature).

Ayurveda gives me the gift of seeing each of my clients as unique, based on their mind-body type, so I can tailor my approach to best meet their needs.

Tell us in brief about your association with Jiva?

In 2009 Dr. Partap Chauhan came to the USA to do Ayurvedic lectures and consultations with my clients. Watching Dr. Chauhan, I saw that there was a way to be a doctor with a heart. He is a doctor who works with love and service as part of his healing package. My clients always had a glow after seeing Dr. Chauhan - a look of hope and peace in their eyes.

Dr. Chauhan also gave me hope. He helped me see that there was a way that I too could practice my two passions: Ayurveda and psychotherapy together - as he has been doing for the past 25 years. I am now working with Dr. Chauhan to bring psychotherapy to Jiva, and to bring Ayurveda to psychotherapists.

Together, we are bridging the gap between the East and the West. We are teaching western psychotherapists how to apply simple Ayurvedic principles to help their clients with mental disorders.

At the same time, we are teaching Jiva Ayurvedic doctors how to apply simple psychotherapy principles to help their patients with mental disorders.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna gives a very simple advice for maintaining good health. He says (6.16, 17): “O Arjuna, Yoga is not perfected by one who overeats or who eats nothing at all, nor by one who oversleeps or stays awake too much. For one who is moderate in diet and recreation, regulated in performing actions, and regulated in sleep, wakefulness and Yoga destroys all misery.”

his instruction is so simple that most people do not pay attention to it – as human beings we are prone to disqualify mere common sense as being trifle and unimportant. Psychologically speaking, the human mind tends to neglect simple instructions.

The nature of the mind, or the ego to be precise, is to take up a challenge. Our ego loves challenges. Therefore, people climb mountains, do bungee jumping or perform challenging acts.

Similarly, they think that to maintain good health they need to pump weights in a health club. Pumping weights may build muscles but does not necessarily make one healthy. The definition of health as per Ayurveda does not include muscular body as a prequisite. It says that a person whose doshas are balanced, the digestive fire is functioning normally, evacuation is regular, and the mind is peaceful, is called healthy. Such a person will be invariably free from diseases.

Good, long-lasting and side-effects-free health can be maintained by following some simple instructions given by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita. If on other hand one is not healthy one can achieve it by leading a regulated life. Diseases manifest in our body because of living an unregulated life, especially in the matter of eating, sleeping, work and recreation.

What's wrong with the modern lifestyle?

Modern lifestyle is not very conducive to good health. This has led to various types of ailments, especially in the urban population. It is very rare to find a middle-aged person living in a city and not taking some pills regularly. One of the most common ailments that are on the rise in the developing countries is diabetes.

More than 2,000 years ago Ayurveda recognized this disease, and called it a disease affecting the royals because they had a rich diet and sedentary

lifestyle. As disposable income of people increased and price of food decreased due to economies of scale, the food of the rich became available to the common man. As a result, this disease was no longer confined to the rich and famous.

What's wrong with modern eating?

Today, most people in the urban population eat a rich diet and live a sedentary life. Moreover, they consume food and beverages that are packaged, processed, refined and unhealthy.

Almost all the packaged food and drinks available in the market contain generous amounts of white sugar in them, which can cause diabetes. With urbanization and change in food habits the number of diabetic patients has increased over the years. There are supposed to be 450 million people suffering from diabetes worldwide. The number is increasing fast in developing countries such as India. In fact, India is fast becoming the diabetes capital of the world.

Many clinical studies have been done to find the real cause of diabetes, however, the main reason remains the same, improper lifestyle.

Lord Krishna's Advice Lord Krishna's advice is still useful after 5,000 years. Although he gave that advice for a Yogi to advance his spiritually, it is beneficial for everyone because it is the basis of good health. The laws of good health are simple: balanced food, good sleep and proper engagement off the senses.

Krishna's instructions are very simple, yet following this simple advice has become difficult. Our lives have become complicated because we have moved away from naturall and simple living. It is not easy for a common person to go to bed early and get up early. He has a show to watch on TV, log into Facebook, check emails, talk on his cell phone, or surf the Internet. There is no time for exercise. Meal timings are not regulated.

Recreation means sitting in front of a screen, be it television, computer or a smart-phone.

Regulating our eating, sleeping and lifestyle habits in simple ways can restore and maintain our good health. If we really like taking up challenges, let us take up the challenge of leading a simple and disciplined life, and then there will be no scope for diseases such as diabetes.

ontrary to popular belief, diabetes is not confined to people who have reached middle age. It has now become a widespread problem in children as well, especially type 1 diabetes.

Though we are yet to come to a definite conclusion for diabetes in children, we can still discuss some of the causes that may lead to the disease in such a young age. We will discuss some of the reasons below: 1. Overweight or Obesity: Research in the U.S. and over the world has shown that children and youth who are obese or overweight have an increased risk of being afflicted by diabetes.

2. Genetic causes: There are also genetic causes for the occurrence of diabetes in young people and children. The ancient Ayurvedic texts of Charak Samhita elaborated on these causes centuries ago. During pregnancy when there is some kind of impairment in the zygote, which is formed by the fertilization of the ovum (female) through the sperm

(male), the child might have a genetic disposition to diabetes.

When the physical conditions are ripe, such a child may start showing symptoms of diabetes.

Also, some children have a hereditary tendency to suffer from diabetes because their parents or grandparents might be suffering from diabetes.

3. Test Tube Baby: Lately, there it is a trend to conceive a child through artificial means such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), also known as a test tube baby. A study conducted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has revealed that children born through IVF with low weight have an increased risk of acquiring diseases such as obesity, heart problems and diabetes compared to children who are conceived naturally.

Contrary to popular belief, diabetes is not confined to people who have reached middle age. It has now become a widespread problem in children as well, especially type 1 diabetes.

Apart from the factors mentioned above, diabetes in adolescence might also occur due to the consumption of alcohol, drugs and cigarette smoking.

How to find out if your child has diabetes?

It is difficult to identify the symptoms of diabetes type 1 in children below two years. Children above two years display symptoms such as rapid weight loss, increased thirst and frequent urination. They may show signs of weakness, fatigue and irritability. Children show increased appetite and excess love of sweets during this disease. Also, secondary symptoms such as stomachache, exhaustion, breathlessness, and nausea and vomiting are apparent.

Parents' role in managing the disease Diabetes is a serious disease which required the patient to maintain lifelong treatment and management.

Proper diet, care, treatment and lifestyle is very important, as well as family support. Therefore, parents and family members must make a patient effort to help the child ride through these difficult times when he/she is young. They should follow the below mentioned tips religiously.

Create a diet plan and ensure that it is strictly followed.

Ensure that your child follows the activities and behaviors that you have planned for his wellbeing.

Regularly monitor the child's blood sugar levels.

Don't go for self-medication without consulting a physician, even if it’s a minor problem.

Let his/her friends and the school authorities know that your child suffers from diabetes.

Educate your child about the disease, how to identify symptoms, and how to cope when a problem arises.

Don't let him devote too much time watching TV, playing video games or spending too much time in front of the computer.

T The right diet for diabetic children For successfully managing diabetes and working towards a cure, it is very important to know the right type, quantity and timing of food. There is a popular myth that diabetics should eat frugally but that is not the truth. In fact, they should eat in a planned and proportionate manner.

Chapattis (rotis) made from flour of maize, bajra, chickpeas (chana), sorghum (jowar) and wheat.

Pulses (dals), cottage cheese, bitter gourd (karela), bottle gourd (lauki) and ridge gourd (torai) Buttermilk, milk (without cream) and soaked almonds.

Use mustard oil/ghee (in small quantities) to make curries.

Eat these vegetables with plant alkaloids or plant insulin:Fruits and bark of the gular (ficus glomerata) tree; chickpea sprouts; fenugreek seeds and plants; Mung dal; leaves of gurmar (gymnema sylvestre); olive oil, Indian snakeroot, winter cheery (ashwagandha), black pepper, jamun (fruit & seeds); bael fruit; basil leaves; neem (margosa) leaves; bhringraj (eclipta alba); turmeric; onion; and carrot.

Also consume these vegetables and plants with fibres: Vegetables (spinach, fenugreek, mustard, amaranth, chickpea); Salads (cucumber, tomato, cabbage); Fruits (orange, lemon, jamun, guava, papaya, apples)

Ayurveda is a very safe and effective healing science to deal with diabetes. It can not only help your child effectively manage the disease, but also ensures that your child is free from the ravages of diabetes in the long-term.

Analysis of the Birth Chart

In astrology, it is generally considered that if the planets, Jupiter and Venus are afflicted by Saturn, Sun and Rahu, than there is a likelihood that one can suffer from diabetes.

Jupiter governs liver and pancreas and is responsible for the formation of pitta, which is responsible for the process of digestion. Pitta is responsible for processing starch and carbohydrates and converting sugar to energy from the food that we eat. Usually, it has been seen that in people with diabetes, Jupiter is afflicted by a malignant planet.

While investigating the relation or likelihood of diabetes in the birth chart, the following things should be considered during the analysis.

The Cancer sign also governs the pancreas, and if weak or malignant may indicate diabetes. In Ayurveda, it is said that the intake of too heavy foods impair the functions of the pancreas. Moon is the planet that governs our disposition to food and the nourishment we derive from it. In the case that Moon is afflicted, the native (owner of the chart) is more prone to excesses in food and beverages, and when combined with a sedentary lifestyle it results in diabetes.

2. In case Jupiter and Moon is in aspect with a malignant planet or in conjunction, or the eighth house contains a malicious planet, there is an increased probability of diabetes.

Since Moon is the Lord of Cancer, it is important to check the position of the Moon to identify a disposition to diabetes. When it comes to disorders of the kidney or the urinary system, it is ruled by Venus. Hence, if Venus is afflicted it may indicate such types of health problems.

The following houses if afflicted by a malignant planet may indicate that the native is susceptible to a variety of complicated diseases including diabetes:  First & Sixth Houses: The first house of the

dvartana is an invigorating full body massage done in a rhythmic motion using herbal powder or paste. This therapy is largely recommended for diabetic neuropathy, obesity, paralysis, skin care, sciatica and indigestion among others. This massage also improves muscle tone and circulation apart from cleansing and nourishing the skin. Udvartana is highly recommended for dissolving excessive fat from the body.

Ingredients Udvartana powder contains nerve stimulating and nourishing agents such as harad, bibhitaki, amla, deodar, senna, kulthi and others.

How is Udvartana done In Udvartana (any of the three procedures), the powder or paste is briskly rubbed into the entire body for a period of 30-45 minutes. The absorptive properties of the powder act to pull excess fat deposits from the body. After the massage, swedana, a herbal sauna is recommended, followed by a shower to remove the powder/paste.

How it works In udvartana, herbal powders that are dry in nature and hot in potency are used.

Mostly sesame oil is used for the paste, which is again hot in potency. All the herbs and oils help to create lightness, and remove blockages and stiffness. It acts on the fat tissues with a liquefying action.

When the herbal powders and oils or rubbed on the skin with a specific action it opens the pores, remove blockages in the vessels, increase heat in the tissues, and stimulate fat metabolism.

Once the paste is rubbed on the body and the massage is over, the client is asked to sit in an herbal steam chamber where the head of the guest remains outside the steam chamber. During this treatment the body loses lots of excess water (kapha) and the pores starts to open. 1 tablespoon oats flour

Soak methi seeds for 7-8 hours, drain water and keep them to sprout for 8-10 hours. To make 1 cup sprouts you will need 2 tablespoons of methi dana.

Oats are supposed to be good for lowering cholesterol and good for diabetes. It reduces kapha dosha. Soyabean has the highest protein content amongst plant products. It pacifies vata dosha.

Method:

Methi (fenugreek) seeds are natural pain killers and effective in reducing swelling. It gives strength to nerves, increases digestive fire (deepan), improves digestion (pachan) and removes flatulence (anuloman). The hypoglycemic property of methi seeds has been well known for years. It also lowers glycosylated haemoglobin level and therefore is very beneficial for people with diabetes. In addition, it helps to pacify vata dosha.

Methi Sprouts

Paratha – Komal Karamchandani

Mix all flours, salt, 1 tablespoon ghee and green chillies to make a soft dough for parathas. Keep it aside.

To make filling, sauté methi dana sprouts with 1 tablespoon water and let it cool. Mix in salt and chopped onions with them.

Take desired amount of dough and roll it in small size roti, now place 1 tablespoon of filling and pack it and roll it in to a desired shape of paratha.

Roast paratha on a tava with ghee, serve hot with achaar or chutney.

Tips : To make oats flour Roast oats in a wok on medium flame for about 5 minutes, let it cool and then grind it in a mixer.
