Knowing body & soul clearly and separating oneself from body is mandatory for keeping happy during old age.

ld age is a station that falls in the journey of life. In order to stay healthy & happy in this stage, it is important that we keep ourselves informed about it.

Ayurveda is a Veda of life and describes each phase of life in detail. It emphasizes on staying fit, happy and contended on physical, mental and spiritual levels.

Significance of Vata on physical level During old age vata remains dominant. As childhood and adulthood are dominated by kapha and pitta respectively, old age shows dominance of vata dosha. If a person knows this, he would not consume such food which aggravates vata. This would make old age less troublesome. Due to lack of

knowledge about Ayurveda, majority of people consume vata aggravating items like cold & dry food, Rajma, Chhole, cabbage, cold water, ice cream, salads during old age. Keeping awake till late night, irregular routine (means food timings, sleep timings etc), exertion, excess travelling, unstable mind, lack of oil massage etc also aggravate vata. Therefore all these things are prohibited in old age. Daily massage with sesame oil, warm – unctuous meals, eating, sleeping & waking up at regular time, performing Yoga – Pranayam & meditation and keeping mind peaceful are some simple ways to keep healthy during old age.

The main reason behind them is deficiency of sattva guna. Due to deficiency of sattva guna, intelligence doesn't function properly and the person fails to understand the situations clearly. Old age is

not a disease. It is just a phase in our journey of life. If this becomes clear, then mind remains fresh. When we enter the youth from childhood, we are very elated as the energetic youth is more pleasant than frail childhood. But due to deficiency of sattva guna, we misuse the intelligence, indulge in inappropriate food & lifestyle and soon lose this energy. Knowing body & soul clearly and seperating oneself from body is mandatory for keeping happy during old age. Dominance of sattva guna spreads the light of knowledge and eliminates the darkness of ignorance. Besides, old age is just the twilight of old age. Tomorrow there will be a new morning and new life would blossom.

Four ashramas described in vedic culture reflect this fact. After gruhasthashram, there is vanaprasthashram. Its main aim is to prepare us for the old age. This is a very important principle to live a happy and contended life.

Vanaprastha practices the ways to seperate oneself from material pleasures.

Fear of Death The main cause of sorrow and anguish during old age is fear of death. Knowledge of Ayurveda can reduce or eliminate this fear. Ayurveda makes us healthy on physical and mental levels and acquaintes us with the real soul.

Soul is immortal, eternal and healthy. So we should be happy in old age because very soon we will get a new body, new kidneys, new liver, new heart and new knees. So Ayurveda educates us with the principles of staying healthy on each level during old age.

I

n this world everything that is perceived undergoes transformation at every moment, except the perceiver. Our bodies undergo numerous stages of transformations i.e. birth existence growth dwindling death. The dwindling stage is called old age, jara.

Old age is a stage that people generally dread. The idea that the best stages of your life are over or that you're on the downslope can be scary and at times depressing for a lot of people. People look to new age technologies as a source of liberation from old age, to gain the happiness once lost. But the fact remains; old age is an inevitable part of life. It's how one chooses to live the last years of their life, that determines the outcome of their passing.

Permanent happiness and enlightenment This is the story of every human being.

Like Yayati, nobody wants to be old. No one is ever satisfied with sensual pleasures. But there is a difference between Yayati and a common person.

Yayati realized that sensual pleasures do not give permanent happiness. Thus he looked upon spirituality and attained enlightenment. It is difficult for a common person to realize what Yayati realized and thereby sadly die with unsatisfied desires. Because of these desires he/she takes another birth and goes through another cycle of life. This continues until one comes to realize the futility of material pleasures.

Thus old age is the time to take stock life and deliberate about one's achievement. What has one achieved that one will carry with him or her after death. Any achievement that comes to an end with death or even before that is worthless. Old age is a signal for death and one should prepare oneself for the journey beyond life.

There was a time when infectious diseases were the number one killer of the world. But this scenario changed rapidly after the invention of antibiotics. More and more infections became curable and some even got eradicated. Today it is stress that has dethroned infections from their top position.

In Bhagavat Purana there is an interesting story about old age In Bhagavat Purana there is an interesting story about old age. Long ago there was a king by the name Yayati. He was in love with the daughter of the great sage Shukracarya, the guru of asuras. The daughter's name was Devayani. She had a friend named Sharmistha who was the daughter of Vrishparva, the king of asuras who she envied.

Years later Devayani married king Yayati. At the time of marriage Devayani asked the king to promise to never have physical union with Sharmistha. Sharmistha would enter the palace of king Yayati as only a servant. As time passed Devayani had two sons from the king. In the meantime Sharmistha also had three sons from the king secretly.

When Devayani found out about this she was very angry at Yayati. Out of anger she went to her father's house and told her father about king Yayati's infidelity. This enraged Shukracarya. King Yayati loved Devayanivery much and followed her to her father's place. When Shukracarya saw him he put a curse on the king to become old. The king immediately turned into an old man. He felt miserable because he had many unsatisfied desires. He wanted to enjoy union with his wife. He pleaded with the sage to retract his curse. The sage replied that it was not possible, only but if he exchange his old age with the youth of one of his sons. The king requested his eldest son to exchange his youth with the king's old age. The son refused.

Similarly three of the king's sons refused. Fortunately for the king the youngest son agreed to part with his youth. The king was happy and enjoyed all the sensual pleasures that life can bring. However he was never satisfied. Finally he thought to himself, “one's mind can never be satisfied with the sensual pleasures”. It is like putting fuel into the blazing fire. The fuel would only increase the fire. Similarly sensual pleasures only increase the desire to enjoy. Contemplating this idea he returned his youth to his son and took back his old age.

What is stress Stress is actually a response given by the body and mind to a stressor such as a testing situation or an unfamiliar condition. The modern hassles, have led to a lot of stress generated in everyday life. This inevitably disturbs the normal balance of body and creates some sort of imbalance mainly in the brain which plays a critical role in

the body's perception of and response to stress. In Ayurveda, stress creates an imbalance mainly in vata and pitta doshas. Since both of them play a vital role in the process of digestion, their imbalance disturbs the digestion and deprives the tissues from nutrition. Since the brain and nervous system consist of majja dhatu, majja dhatu becomes particularly important for handling the stress. Disturbed digestion deprives majja dhatu of nutrition and weakens it over the course of time.

What to do?

So the relationship between stress and sexual health is too close to ignore. A wise man should take note of this and protect his sexual

strength as much as possible. To relieve stress, following tips may prove useful: - Keep a close watch on your diet.

Consume fresh fruits, and vegetables. This helps reduce stress by boosting the shukra dhatu.

- Jiva's stress free tablets Memorika and Ayur Shakta are also effective in negating the effects of stress and can handle most stress related problems.

- Practicing Yoga provides relaxation to the mind body and soul. It should be undertaken daily to keep a check on stress.

ummer is a great time for the kids to try their hand at cooking. There is so much they can do—from shopping at the vegetable market to making delicious dishes. As the saying goes, “its summertime and the living is easy”. And with fruits and veggies at their freshest, it's the best time to get the kids interested in their food. Here are a few tips on how to shop and cook with your kids.

Vegetable market shopping with Kids  Taking you kids to the vegetable market can be a tremendously fun experience.

Here's how to make it a successful trip. 

Let the kids pick and choose: When kids are involved in the decision-making process, they are more likely to want to cook

and eat it. Give them a budget and let them choose some fruits and veggies to take home. 

Encourage them to ask questions. Be open to talking about the different articles on offer. Encourage your kids to ask questions and learn more about what they see.



Talk about it. Shopping should never be a silent activity. Talk to your kids about what you are buying, how to tell if it's fresh and what you could do with it.



Visit a vegetable farm.

Vegetable markets aren't the only places to get fresh produce. Farms can also be a great alternative to choose and pick from a wide variety of produce. Kids can see where food comes from and possibly even try their hand at picking some fruits.

Drinks: Fruity Iced Tea A refreshing drink that combines the zing of tea with the tang of oranges, spiked up further with sharp hints of mint, fruity iced tea will be enjoyed by all at home. Remember to keep aside some orange slices for the garnish.

Ingredients 1 glass orange juice

2 tea bags

4 tbsp. sugar

2 glasses water

Method 1. Put 1 glass of water, the sugar and tea bags in a saucepan and bring to the boil.

2. Cool and remove the tea bags.

4. Put 4 ice cubes in each glass and pour the tea mixture over it.

5. Garnish with a slice of orange and mint leaves.

6. Serve immediately.

Kulcha Pizza

Corn Chaat

Bring together the simplicity of Indian bread and Italian flavors with the kulcha pizza. This is something perhaps never tried before, a delicious preparation of pizza, made of kulcha, capsicum, onions, and other ingredients. You may not have seen kulcha being used as a base for pizza, but it goes very well along with the veggies, paneer, spices and tomato sauce in this recipe.

Corn chaat is a very simple, healthy and flavorful recipe which can be prepared easily by kids and needs very few ingredients. It can be eaten as a snack and is loved by everyone. It is a healthier option than cakes and cookies and kids will love it for sure.

Ingredients 1

medium or large corn cob

small onion, finely chopped

medium tomato, finely chopped

green chili, finely chopped (optional)

tsp lemon juice

Ingredients

parsley or coriander leaves

1/2 tsp red chili powder or as required

Method 1. Boil or pressure cook the corn cob till the kernels are cooked well.

2. When the corn cob becomes warm or cools down, then remove the corn kernels with a knife.

5. Serve the corn chaat immediately, in individual serving bowls or plates topped with sev and a garnish of coriander/parsley.

Preparation Time: 10 min Cook time: 5 min Serves 5-10

Gms - Homemade paneer

pinch - Black pepper Salt- to taste

3. Mix the corn kernels along with the rest of the ingredients in a bowl.

4. Check the taste and add more salt or chaat masala or lemon juice if required.

Biscuit laddu Making laddus at home is not easy but here we have a simple laddu recipe that can be prepared easily by kids. This recipe is easy because often recipes made using biscuits are tasty and can be prepared in minutes with very less ingredients. Take a look at how to go about with the mouthwatering laddu recipe (biscuit recipe).

Ingredients

Method 1. Put the refined oil in a frying pan, and add garlic.

2. Let garlic be a little golden, then add onion, capsicum and fry for 10-15 seconds, stirring continuously to avoid burning or overcooking (capsicum and onion must be crunchy).

3. Add tomatoes, boiled corns and tomato sauce and mix well.

4. Stir continuously for 10 seconds.

5. Add salt, black pepper and red chili powder and mix well and turn off the flame.

6. Let this mixture be cool for 5 minutes.

7. Take a kulcha and evenly spread mixture on kulcha top.

8. Sprinkle grated homemade paneer (1-2spoons per kulcha).

9. Make this kulcha pizza on tawa or flat non-stick frying pan. Put kulcha with toppings on frying pan and place a lid on it. Cook or about 30 seconds on slow flame.

10. This kulcha pizza is soft from top and bit crisp from the base and is now ready to serve.

Method

1 packet tiger biscuit 1. In a blender, grind the biscuits or sweet biscuit

into fine powder.

In a bowl add the biscuit powder, 1 packet milkmaid or condensed milk and make a dough condensed milk 3. Divide the dough into small balls 100 grams desiccated and shape them in the form of coconut laddoos(small golf ball sized balls).

Stay Healthy this summer with Milk

Milk has long been associated with good health and is one of the most consumed beverages throughout the world. Most people are familiar with the health benefits of milk and I am sure that while growing up, the words “drink your milk” sounds familiar to most of us.

However what does Ayurveda say about milk?

Benefits of milk as per Ayurveda According to Ayurveda, milk provides special and unique nutrition that cannot be derived from any other type of food. Milk, when digested properly, nourishes all the tissues, supports emotional balance, and helps to balance the three bio-energies (doshas): kapha (earth), pitta (fire) and vata (air). 

People with a pitta dosha display an inherent fire (agni) elemental character; milk can be helpful to balance this heat of the pitta.



Kapha governs all structure and lubrication in the mind and body. Milk increases the kapha. It is hard to digest; so, one should not drink cold milk, as it tends to be heavier. Milk should always be taken hot or warm and after boiling.



Milk by itself is a complete meal. The composite characteristics of milk make it "the most nearly perfect food". It provides more essential nutrients in significant amounts than any other single food. It is an outstanding source of calcium and phosphorus for bones and teeth, and contains riboflavin, vitamins B6, A and B1 in significant amounts. It also contains the B12 vitamin, which has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system.



It can boost male fertility by enhancing the reproductive tissue (shukra dhatu), and thereby make it a good aphrodisiac (vrishya). Men who have good digestion can improve their zukra dhatu (sperm count) by drinking milk.



Milk has natural cooling properties (shita virya), which means it has a cooling effect on the body making it an ideal drink during summers.



It is easily digested and absorbed in the body and is especially good for mothers who are breastfeeding their babies.



Milk to which water is added in the ratio of 2:1 is very easily digestible. If water is added to milk in the ratio of 1:4 and then boiled and consumed, this milk can be taken in many disease conditions, and it gives strength and energy.

Precautions Related to Milk While milk has many benefits, there are some concerns that one should be aware of and take precautionary measures.

Lactose intolerance is a condition in which a person lacks the enzyme to break down the sugar found in milk for proper digestion. Those with lactose intolerance may experience bloating, flatulence or diarrhea when consuming milk and milk products. Drinking lactose-free milk, which has added enzymes to help with lactose digestion, may ease or eliminate these symptoms.

Impure milk in circulation is a concern in some countries where there are no ancient breeds of cows as mentioned in Ayurveda. We have new breeds instead, which produce a lot of milk however these cows are fed with genetic foods and are given hormonal injections. For these reasons it is possible that the milk and milk products do not possess the qualities mentioned in Ayurveda and may not be nutritionally beneficial for consumption.

ealthy eating is important no matter what your age. If you eat well, you are likely to feel healthier, stay active for longer and protect yourself against illness. As you grow older, your needs for nutrition increase. Your body is in a degenerative mode, where growth of cells and tissues is slow. Your immunity is not the same as it was, indigestion is frequent and you may be easily fatigued. You are no longer physically active and various disorders like Diabetes, Arthritis, high blood pressure or high cholesterol creep up. All this does not mean that you have to eat less. Eating right becomes more important than eating less.

Ayurveda and old age

Old age marks the end of pitta dominance and beginning of vata dominance. The digestion power therefore starts dwindling and it becomes increasingly crucial, what you eat, when and how. Every meal starts showing its effect on body as well as mind almost instantaneously and even a minor indiscipline results in some sort of discomfort or aggravation of already existing health problem.

According to Ayurveda, old age brings about a change in the three bio energies (doshas). It marks the end of fire (pitta) dominance and the beginning of water (vata) dominance, where the digestive powers (agni) starts dwindling. Eating according to your body's constitution requirements becomes crucial; your food should generally not increase the vata dosha in your body, and at the same time should antagonize your pathology. Daily dietary tips - Use of mustard oil or olive oil is a good cooking medium as both prevent high cholesterol and improve good cholesterol in the blood.

- Six to seven small meals in a day aid digestion, absorption and prevent fatigue.

- Vegetables soups without cream and thickening agents are a healthy meal to be taken as a supper.

- Always leave your home with a small healthy snack in your bag, to avoid eating out.

- For a high dose of nutrition, add curd to the dough for roti to improve the biological value of the cereal, and to keep them soft.

- Oats porridge is an excellent breakfast for seniors.

- Drink about 15 glasses of water in a day to prevent dehydration.

- Do not overcook the food to make it soft as by doing so one destroys vital nutrients.

eart diseases are on the rise and treatments can be costly and physically taxing procedures. Urobasti is a costeffective, non-invasive Ayurvedic treatment which helps people suffering from cardiac problems. The word Urobasti in Sanskrit refers to Uro the chest, and Basti the container or retainer. So Uro Basti is an oil bath on the heart. This comprises an Ayurvedic hot oil treatment where the medicated hot oil preparation or freshly prepared herbal decoction is poured over the heart region. The heart (Hridaya) is considered as one among the three vital areas (trimarma) measuring about four fingers (four anguli pramana), covering the heart, and the middle of the sternum. This procedure involves bathing the heart region using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions or medicated ghee depending on the condition.

How it works Since oil is supposed to be the prime remedy for vata dosha in Ayurveda, it plays a frontline role in the treatment of most of the cardiac diseases caused by vata dosha. Warm oil kept stagnant on the heart in this

The large number of cardiology centers that have come into existence in last few decades have not reduced the number of heart patients, but their number has multiplied by leaps & bounds. Here is what Ayurveda offers in this direction. therapy oozes into the deeper cardiac tissues, lubricates the coverings of heart, nourishes the cardiac cells and pacifies the aggravated vata dosha.

Repeated sessions of this therapy rejuvenate the cardiac tissues, repair the wear and tear suffered by the heart and strengthen factors like Ojus.

Procedure: - The person undergoing Urobasti is made to lie face down on the massage table (Droni) - Dough is prepared out of black gram flour or whole wheat flour. It is then made into a small ring of four to five inches in diameter which is placed over the chest to cover the heart i.e. to the left side of the sternum.

- After it is glued with some water to make it leak-proof, lukewarm medicated oil or the herbal decoction is slowly poured into it.

When this cools down it is squeezed out and replaced with more warm oil or herbal decoction.

- At the end of the procedure the dough is removed; a gentle massage is given over the area.

The person is made to take rest for a while. * Duration of treatment: 30 minutes Advantages of Urobasti: - Alleviates cardiac pains.

The asan that we will perform today is called Setubandhasan.

In Sanskrit, the word 'setu' is bridge and 'bandh' means to bind. Just as a bridge is used to cross over troublesome waters, many physical and mental difficulties can be crossed over with help of Setubandhasan.

The technique setubandhasan is simple, advantageous and is useful for men & women of all ages.

Spread a mat or carpet on the ground. Lie down on your back.

Keep your arms placed on the mat with your fingers facing the direction of your legs.

Bend your knees and keep both your feet near the hips.

Keep equal distance between feet and hips.

Press your palms against the ground and lift your hips, waist and back upwards as far as possible.

Remain in this position for at least half a minute and then return to original position while breathing out slowly.

Repeat this sequence 5 times and then do shavasan for some time.

They create a more cooling environment as they don't absorb and emit heat the way concrete does, and they cool us through our senses.

Plants also reflect how much we benefit from the natural world. When it's hot, some plants have the capacity to transform heat and the sun into something that cools and calms. Khus is one of these plants.

Khus aka Vetiver is a tall perennial (life

span of 2+ years), grass that is native to India. The name translates from Tamil, one of the languages of native people, to mean “the root that is dug out”. Khus thrives in the hot climate. For thousands of years Khus has been most used for its calming and cooling attributes by all social classes of people in India. Naturally grown herbs are assumed to be more potent and effective than cultivated herbs because habitat plays an important role.

Khus or usheer as it is commonly called in Ayurveda was used extensively in ancient India for its medicinal properties; these properties have been passed down from generation to generation and remain relevant to this day. Some of those medicinal properties are listed below. 

Pacifies thirst and aids in generation of urine and breast milk.



Brings down fevers, and cures burning sensations.



Purifies and invigorates the blood, skin and genitourinary tract.



Strengthens the digestive fire and calms both vomiting and diarrhea.



Incense or essential oil of khus, cools the mind and improves concentration. It also calms the nervous system.



Khus is also used to treat boils, fever, skin rashes due to heat or an aggravated pitta.

Various uses of Khus You would be surprised at the number of uses this simple grass has given in our daily lives. Here are some of them.

Khus oil is acquired from the roots of the khus grass. The oil preparation is used extensively in the perfume industry including body perfumes and room fresheners, as well as cosmetics like soaps and shampoos.

Khus sherbet is a pleasant drink for summer; its hydrating qualities make it an ideal drink for children during their summer vacations.

Khus can also be used as a flavoring agent, in the form of a syrup. This syrup is used to flavor milkshakes and yogurt drinks like lassi.

Brushes (luffas and scrubbers) can be made by the khus grass.

These brushes can be used while taking a bath, to exfoliate the skin.

It also helps to balance the activity of the sebaceous oil glands and contains deodorizing properties that helps normalize oily skin.

Ayur Life / Recipe Summer is almost here, and it brings with it the great taste of the King of fruit, the mango. For those who have never tried a juicy mango, the saying goes, 'once you try a juicy mango, you will keep going for more'. Eaten by themselves or in a variety of dishes, mangoes add antioxidants and fiber to your diet.

In the old days mangoes were extensively used in Ayurvedic cures. Ancient Sanskrit text lauds this delicious fruit: As explained in Sanskrit. Mangos are best eaten ripe. The sweet taste acts as aphrodisiac, enhances your stamina; it is also good for your heart, and for curing diseases related to an imbalance of the Vata dosha.

oday we are going to prepare a special dish made out of mangoes. Our two main ingredients will be raw mangoes and jaggery (gur). We will combine the sourness (amla) of raw mango and balance that with the sweetness of jaggery (gur). Raw mangoes by themselves have a tendency to aggravate the vata and pitta doshas. This combination gives a more balanced taste (rasa), it also ends the aggravation of the pitta dosha, of course when consumed in the

Method: 1. Peel raw mango and dice in 1/2 an inch square cubes.

2. In a pan (kadhai), heat oil; add cumin seeds (jeera) and asafoetida (hing).

3. Add raw mango cubes and sauté over medium heat and add salt.

4. After about 5-7 minutes the mango becomes tender.

5. Now add the other ingredients and 1/2 cup water and cook for about 5 min on medium flame.

6. Your raw mango dish (sabji) is ready to serve.

r. Dadi is back and today we are going to be talking about an organ that is frequently overlooked, the liver. Are you alive and well today? If your answer is yes, than you have your liver to thank. The largest gland in the body, the liver plays the most vital role in keeping you healthy.

The hot summer months in India are notorious for disturbing proper liver function. Holiday trips in summer invariably lead to undisciplined routines, travel stress, changes in food and extensive hoteling which in turn burden the digestive system. Food which is popularly consumed on these occasions usually include recipes that are rich in sugar, maida flour, spices, bread, meat, fish, potatoes and other unhealthy food items.

Unless one remains careful, these holidays can pave the way for many health complications such as liver problems.

If you complain of the following symptoms like loss of appetite, heavy & bloated feeling in abdomen, burning sensation in chest or abdomen, and excessive sour belching. All such symptoms indicate a weakened liver function.

Severe symptoms may even necessitate a visit to the doctor.

Minor disturbances can be however handled with some home remedies.

Few home remedies for such problems are as follows:  Mix together equal parts of

 Basil leaves, and coriander seeds.

Take ½ a teaspoon of this mixture with ½ a teaspoon of powdered rock candy (or unrefined sugar) 15 minutes before lunch and dinner.  Make a powdered mixture of equal

parts of rock candy (or unrefined sugar), fennel, and green cardamom. Whenever you feel heartburn, mix 1 teaspoon of the mixture in a glass of cold milk and drink.  Prepare a mixture of ¼ teaspoon of

ginger juice, ¼ teaspoon of lime juice and a pinch of rock salt. This is one dose. Have this preparation 15 minutes before meals, twice a day.

 Make a mixture of 1 gram of

asafetida fried in purified butter, ½ teaspoon of black salt, and 3 teaspoons of celery seeds. Take 1 teaspoon with lukewarm water 2-3 times a day.  Make a mixture of 1 teaspoon of

roasted cumin seeds powder, 1 teaspoon of celery seeds, 1 teaspoon of dried ginger powder and ¼ teaspoon of black salt.  Have 1 glassful of buttermilk with

1/6 teaspoon each of roasted cumin seeds powder and dried ginger powder. Add black salt according to taste.  Have a cup of sugarcane juice with

½ teaspoon of basil leaves paste twice a day. Juice should be prepared in hygienic conditions so as to avoid contamination from dust or other substances.

 Make a powder of dried ginger root,

black pepper, long pepper, celery
