his might have happened with you as well. You experience many times of symptoms and problems in your body, you go to the doctor and go through all the tests.

Strangely, the reports show that there is nothing wrong with you. The doctor might even recommend you to consult a psychiatrist. No wonder modern medical science is rigid in its perspective and limited in scope, but even then, it considers that an imbalance in the mind is manifested in physical symptoms.

Today, we are seeing an unprecedented increase in the occurrence of autoimmune diseases, a condition that has no explanation in modern medical science. All that we know about autoimmune diseases is that the body's own immunity system starts to attack a part of our body system, identifying it as an enemy or invader. This is a very mysterious disease of which the answer perhaps lies in our mind.

Ayurveda considers both the mind and body as the source of disease. The Charaka Samhita even goes on to say that diseases

originating in the body affect the mind and vice versa. According to Ayurveda, there are two chief factors or causes that are responsible for disease: Pragyaapradha or the misuse of intelligence; and asatyemindriya arth or the misuse of the senses.

Mind's role in disease:In Ayurveda the emphasis is always on the eradication of diseases from its roots. Hence, understanding the role and functioning of the mind becomes very important in treating diseases. As the state of the body is defined by the state of the three doshas, namely vata, pitta and kapha; the state of the mind is defined by the state of the three gunas, known as sattva, rajas and tamas.

While a dominant sattva guna signifies a healthy mind, a dominant rajas and tamas guna denotes a diseased and imbalanced mind. A mind dominated by rajas and gunas is influenced by lust, anger, greed, obsession, envy and pride, which lead to various diseases of the mind and body. An excess of the above two gunas confuse and corrupt the mind, leading to 'pragyaapradha' or the misuse of intelligence.

In autoimmune diseases, in which the body's own immunity attacks the body, the characteristics are similar to the body losing intelligence and going out of control. Perhaps, the causes of this disease can be explored within the mind.

Ways to keep your mind healthy:To keep our mind healthy, we have to increase the elements of sattva in our diet, lifestyle and thoughts. There are simple ways to start towards the path of mental well-being. We should eat fresh fruits, fresh food, dry fruits, salads, fresh milk, honey and pure water. Also, adequate amount of fresh air and exercise is important, as well as spiritual pursuits, and pure and positive thoughts.

According to Ayurveda, not only what we eat, but what we see (television,

films), what we listen (songs, talk shows, people), and what we think—all these factors influence our mind and body. Hence, we should maintain the qualities of sattva or purity in what we eat, see, listen, think and act.

How to strengthen your mind:If your mind is weak, you cannot fight disease.

On the other hand, one with mental strength can overcome disease against all odds. Hence, it is important that you have a healthy and positive state of mind to fight and overcome disease.

If you follow the below given daily regimen or dincharyas, it can help you maintain positive thoughts, boost your morale and strengthen your mind.

Sleeping and eating on time and waking up before sunrise.

Regular Yoga, Pranayama and meditation.

he mind, body, senses and soul are integral parts of the unit called a human being. They are interrelated and influenced by each other. Probably the oldest example of this mutual influence is found in the first chapter of Bhagavad Gita.

In the events leading to the battle of Mahabharata, Arjuna, the greatest warrior on the side of the Pandavas, was ready to fight after the conches were blown, signaling the commencement of the battle. But when Arjuna saw that the assembled warriors on both sides were his own relatives, including his grandfather Bhisma and honorable guru Dronacharya, he started to have doubts in his mind. He lost the enthusiasm to fight and became confused.

Soon he felt that his head began reeling and his body began to tremble. His mouth was parched and he felt feverish. Arjuna felt so

weak physically that he could not hold his bow. He was even unable to stand. His weak mental state had a visible influence on his physical body.

How the mind influences the body The Vedas consider that our physical body is the crystallization of our mental tendencies carried over from our past lives. Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita (8.6) that our mental state at the time of death determines our next body. This is true not only at the time of death but at other times also. A person's state of mind represents his identity. A change in mind brings a change in behavior, including the physical appearance.

The face of person is said to be the index of the mind since it changes with the change in emotions such as anger, sadness and joy.

Detachment from the material world is the essence of every spiritual philosophy in the world. Dr. Dasa explains how detachment can pave way for peace, harmony and prosperity in our lives.

Indeed it is not only the face but the whole body which undergoes a change with the change in the state of mind. This is most visible in case of an angry person who experiences an increased rate of breathing, pulse rate and blood pressure because of his/her emotions.

The deleterious effects of stress Stress, if experienced regularly, has a very detrimental effect on a person's health.

When under stress a person's digestive system becomes slow or even turned off.

Moreover, a person under stress may eat more than one's regular diet to feel a sense of relief from stress, or may resort to smoking and drinking. All this further burdens the weakened digestive system which results in formation of ama or toxins in the form of undigested food. If ama is not cleared from the body it will clog the channels in one's body leading to various types of ailments.

According to the World Health Organisation, stress will be the greatest danger to health in the future. Our lives are becoming more and more stressed.

Children, adults, youth and grown-ups are all under the vice like grip of stress. School examinations, deadlines and work pressure, noise and traffic, broken family relations, job insecurity, inflation, insufficient income, daily news on the TV and newspapers, all lead to unwanted stress in our daily life.

Going beyond the body & mind According to Ayurveda when one's mind is centered and peaceful, the digestive systems functions well and one does not have food cravings. But this is a rare phenomenon in today's world. Most people do not know how to handle stress – or rather they don't know how to handle stress in the right way.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Sri Krishna teaches Arjuna to perform one's duty while maintaining an evenness of mind. Attachment to actions and their results is the root cause of stress. This is inevitable as long as we keep on misidentifying ourselves only with our body and mind. Ayurveda clearly states that life is a combination of body, senses, mind and the conscious self (atma or soul). Among these four things atma is our real identity and other three are acquired identities for this particular life. However, out of ignorance of our conscious self we consider our self only a combination of body, senses and the mind.

This puts us in the dualities of love and hate, like and dislike, gain and loss, victory and defeat, and success and failure.

ask oneself - why one is worrying about a particular action, situation, relation or object or person? Can worrying about these things really provide a solution? If the answer is no, which invariably is, then we should consciously give up such worries. Many a times we are in constant anxiety which serves us no good purpose. If something is inevitable, beyond our control then it is unwise to worry about it.

We should not apply our emotions and thoughts on useless things and things that are beyond our control. Much of what we worry, think and feel emotional about is not of much value. We must stop all such useless thoughts and worries by using our intellect through introspection. Thus, we can stay peaceful in mind and healthy in body.

3. If a person born in the night has a weak Saturn in the tenth house, it makes a person fearful.

Mania Mania is an abnormally elated mental state, characterized by feelings of euphoria, lack of inhibitions, racing thoughts, talkativeness, risk taking, irritability, and diminished need for sleep.

Foods that are frozen, processed, genetically modified, and laced with preservatives, artificial flavors and additives are not recommended in Ayurveda. Such food lacks in chetana (living intelligence) and prana (vital life-energy) – it disturbs the intellect and diminishes mental functions.

Eat a Wide Variety of Food Eat a wide variety of food for balanced nutrition—whole grains, lentils and pulses, vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts, healthy oil or ghee, spices and pure water.

As the body does not produce fats, it is important for us to get them from external sources such as our daily intake of food. Shirodhara Releases mental & physical stress S

hirodhara is one of the most effective purification and rejuvenation therapies in Panchakarma. It is an amazingly relaxing therapy which gently releases stress and tension from the mind and body.

Step 2. A rhythmic stream of medicated oils at a specified temperature from a specified height is poured on the middle of the forehead. The warm oil helps to calm aggravated vata in the nervous system.

The word shirodhara if broken into two denotes “shiro” meaning head and “dhara” which mean stream. Therefore, shirodhara is an even flowing (streaming) of oil over the forehead for an extended period of time for relaxation, rejuvenation and healing. This technique aims to bring physical and emotional balance by rejuvenating the spirit and preserving health.

Step 3. The procedure lasts for 30-35 minutes and is followed by an Ayurvedic head massage.

The practitioner will work on the specific marma points to help stabilise nervous function, inducing calmness, and helping the mind become bright and clear.

There are four types of specialized forms of shirodhara known as tailadhara, ksheeradhara, takradhara and jaladhara. It is a form of external snehana or oleation for the body.

How shirodhara works Shirodhara works primarily on the vata nadi sanstha or the nervous system, as it is referred to in Ayurveda. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, balance vata constitutions, strengthen the nerves, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. 3. Put some fresh rose petals in a cup of boiling water. Set aside until it cools to lukewarm temperature.

4. Prepare mint tea by boiling 8-10 mint leaves in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Let it cool and add 1 teaspoon of honey to it. Have this twice a day, or only in the morning on an empty stomach.

5. Boil 8-10 leaves of holy basil (tulsi), ¼ teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, and a pinch of cardamom powder in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Add ½ teaspoon of sugar and drink lukewarm twice a day.

⾷事と同様、ライフスタイルも⼼の均衡に大きな影 響を与えます。ストレスが多く、不規則でアンバラ ンスなライフスタイルは⼼の質（グナ）に有害な影 響を及ぼします。一方、サトヴィックな行いや生活 習慣は⼼のサットヴァを⾼める働きをします。アー ユルヴェーダにおいては、統一されてバランスのと れたライフスタイルを実行するために、ディナチャ ルヤと呼ばれる日々の養生法が提唱されています。 サトヴィックな行いとは静かで落ち着きをもたらし、 ひらめきを与え、⼼に活力を与えるものです。瞑想、 ヨガ、その他の軽い運動もサトヴィックな行いと⾔ えるでしょう。平安でクラシカルな音楽を聴くこと、 自然やアウトドアを楽しむこと、ガーデニング、良 書を読むこと、創造的で芸術的な活動を楽しむこと もサトヴィックな質を⾼めます。 ストレスや不安を効果的に処理することは⼼の役割 です。ストレスは主観的な経験です。⼼は外界から の刺激を解釈し、体の反応をもたらします。⼼に よってもたらされる体で感じるストレスが頻度起こ れば、体を蝕むことになります。

⼼の⾷べ物－瞑想 1978年、臨床研究の結果、瞑想は老化を遅らせ、若 返らせることもあることが明らかになりました。実 験への参加者は2つのグループに分かれ、生理学者 によって医学的な検査が行われました。1つのグ ループは5年以上にわたって瞑想を行いました。そ の結果、瞑想を続けたグループは生物学的に実年齢 よりはるかに若いことが判明しました。⾧期に瞑想 を続けた⼈の体は、実年齢より平均で12歳も若かっ たのです。 瞑想は、バランスがとれ、静かで、落ち着いた生き 方を得るための方法であり、体と⼼の健康に大きな 役割を果たします。ストレスを緩和する方法を学ぶ ことは、健康なライフスタイルにとって欠かせない 側⾯です。 アーユルヴェディックな生き方の基礎は、ドーシャ のバランスをとることだけでなく、⼼のサットヴァ を保つことでもあります。そのためには、体と⼼の 健康に有害な影響を与える争い、攻撃、敵意などの 負の感情を避けなければなりません。ネガティブな 感情から解放されたライフスタイルはストレスに対 する耐性が⾼くなります。それは感情の振れ幅が少 なく、穏やかで、平安で、忍耐強く、寛容な生き方 なのです。

バガヴァッド・ギーターにおいてクリシュナ神 はアルジュナに対して、⼼の統一を保ちつつ自 分の義務を果たせと諭します。行為とその結果 に対する執着がストレスの根本原因なのです。 自分の本質を体や⼼だと誤って理解している限 り、このストレスは避けられません。アーユル ヴェーダは、生命とは体、感覚器官、⼼、真実 の自己（アートマ、魂）から成り立っていると ⾔います。この4つのうちでアートマが⼈間の 本質であり、ほかの3つは現世において後天的 に獲得した固有性なのです。しかし、ほとんど の⼈は真実の自己を無視し、自己とは体、感覚 器官、⼼だと考えています。これが愛と憎しみ、 好きと嫌い、得と損、勝利と敗北、成功と失敗 という二重性の原因になっているのです。 クリシュナ神は、物体や感覚器官から得られる 快楽を求めるのではなく、こうした二重性を克 服せよと⾔い、自己の中⼼主体に満⾜すべてだ と説いています。感覚器官から起きる快楽は一 時的で限りがあり、物質、状況、関係性に⼈を 縛りつけるものです。いずれ苦しみにつながる もの以外の何ものでもありません。こうした知 恵や大局観は、⼈間の歴史において今日ほど切 に必要とされている時代はありません。

どうやって執着から解放されるか

執着から解放されるためには、まず内省から始 める必要があります。内省をスワディヤーヤと いいます。自己の内部から沸き起こる思考、感 情、欲望の網にからまることなく自分の⼼をみ つめなければなりません。そのなかでいつも自 問自答することです。なぜ特定の行い、状況、 関係、物体、⼈について悩むのか？ 悩めばほ んとうに解決策がみつかるのか？ もし答えが 「いいえ」なら（そのとおり、答えは「いい え」です）、そうした悩みは意識的に遮断すべ

⼼の健康を最⾼に維持するために は次のことを避けなければいけま せん。 アイスクリーム、チョコレート、 冷たい飲み物、乳製品、その他 冷たい物の⾷べ過ぎ。 チップス、クッキー、ジャンク フード、加工⾷品、缶詰。 プラーナ（生命力）が不⾜して いる⾷べ物。例えば肉、古いも の、調理してから時間がたった もの。 起床時間が遅く、夜遅くまで ゲームで遊んだりテレビを見る。 過度にうるさい音楽を聴いたり、 紅茶、コーヒー、ホットチョコ といった刺激性の強い飲み物を 飲む。

アーユルヴェーダと⼦供の記 憶 アーユルヴェーダは⼦供の⼼の健 康に安全で⾧続きする効果を与え、 記憶力や精神活動を向上とさせま す。精神的な健康つまり健康な⼼ の状態は、知覚、注意力、集中力、 理解力、記憶力、回想力といった 感覚器官の機能にかかっています。 アーユルヴェーダは記憶力の悪さ やIQの低さの原因は様々だとし ながらも、主たる原因は栄養の悪 さと脳内化学物質のバランスの崩 れだとしています。それは生理的 な要因かもしれないし、薬物や抗 体の影響かもしれません。記憶の 問題はカファドーシャの乱れにも 関係しています。カファの増悪は ⼼の働きを鈍らせ、物事への関⼼ を低下させるからです。あらゆる 神経系統と記憶を担当するヴァー タドーシャが乱れた時には、スト レスや混乱をひきおこし、知識の 蓄積や記憶を妨げることがありま す。 Jan 2014 - Paramayu - 57

健康な⼼と体をつくるためには、規 則正しい健全な睡眠習慣が欠かせ ません。夜更かしはヴァータを乱し、 多くのヴァータ性疾患を引き起こし ます。 だから、美しさと健康のためには早 寝早起きが大切なのです。

睡眠の質が悪いと、肌のたるみ、 目の下のたるみ、肌のくすみとし て顔に現れます。 睡眠不⾜は⾎管を収縮させ、目の 周りのクマの原因となります。 睡眠時に肌は生まれ変わります。 新しい皮膚細胞が成⾧し、古い細 胞と⼊れかわります。睡眠不⾜に なると肌は生まれ変わることが出 来ず、肌の早期老化を引き起こし ます。

快眠と美貌の秘訣 いつも決まった時間にベッドに⼊りま しょう。週末を含めて毎日同じ時間に目 覚ましをセットし、睡眠と起床のリズム を整えます。 寝室は必ず暗くします。寝る前にコー ヒー、紅茶、ホットチョコレートを摂っ てはいけません。代わりにホットミルク を飲みましょう。 深呼吸をして、体中の筋肉の緊張・弛緩 を繰り返しましょう。眠る直前には運動 をしないことです。

アーユルヴェーダは⼀貫 して、⾷事が心の状態に 重要な役割を果たすと 捉えています。現代医学 のいろいろな臨床研究 からも同様のことが裏付 けられています。本稿で は⾷事と心の関係を明 らかにします。

地

球上のすべてに基本の性質（グナ）があるよう に、⾷事の性質もサットヴァ、ラジャス、タマ スの性質に分類できます。見るもの、聞くもの、匂うも の、⾆で味わうもの、肌で感じるものの全てがこの三つ の性質に分類できます。アーユルヴェーダにおいて⼼の バランスをとるということは、適切な⾷事を通して⼼の グナをタマスまたはラジャスからサットヴァに変えるこ とを意味します。すなわち、ラジャス的またはタマス的 な⾷べ物や行いよりも、サットヴァ的な⾷べ物や行いを 好んで選択するということです。⾷事、環境及び五感を 通した経験に絶えずひたむきに注意することにより、バ ランスの取れた⼼に到達できます。 ⾷べ物は20年前と⽐べて大きく変化しています。⾷料 生産・製造技術、ライフスタイルの変化、加工⾷品の消 費増などにより、新鮮で滋味あふれる⾷品を⾷べる割合 が昔より減っています。同時に、脂肪、糖分、アルコー ル、添加物の摂取量がかなり増加しました。

健康な心のための

アーユルヴェーダ式⾷事

最近の研究結果は、良質の栄養はメン タルヘルスの必須条件であり、⾷事が 多くのメンタルヘルスの状態に影響する ことを⽰しています。

⾷事と心の関係 最近の研究結果は、良質の栄養はメンタルヘルスの 必須条件であり、⾷事がいろいろなメンタルヘルス の状態に影響することを⽰しています。⾷事とメン タルヘルスの関係を⽰す内容のエビデンスが急速に 増加しています。短・⾧期的なメンタルヘルスへの 影響に加えて、うつ、統合失調症、多動性障害、ア ルツハイマー病といった脳障害や精神疾患の発症、 コントロール、予防に⾷事が重要な役割を果たして いることが最近の研究によって明らかになっていま す。 インドで行われた臨床研究によって、サトヴィック な⾷べ物とサトヴィックな行動や質との間に直接的 な関係があることが明らかになりました。⾷べ物が 行動や気分の変化をもたらすという仮説は欧米の研 究でも見られ、⼦供の⽐較研究において⾷事と行動 の関係が確認されています。

心のバランスを取るための⾷事の秘訣 チェータナやプラーナのない⾷べ物を避ける 健康的な⾷事とは、できるだ け自然な状態のままの自然⾷ 品を⾷べることを意味しま す。皮をむいたり加熱するこ とは唯一の例外です。⾷べた ものの消化と同化を助けるか らです。冷凍⾷品、加工⾷ 品、遺伝⼦組み換え⾷品、保 存料が添加された⾷品をアー ユルヴェーダは勧めていませ ん。そのような⾷品はチェータナ（活きた知性）や プラーナ（気）が失われていて、知力を乱し、⼼の 機能を弱らせるからです。代わりに、地元で採れた 物、旬の物、オーガニックで自然な⾷べ物を選びま す。

ダは、⾷事は目に対しても満⾜を与えるものでなければな らないと⾔っています。料理が盛りつけられたお⽫からさまざ まな⾊、感触、味、香りが放たれるとき、期待感から消化 液がたっぷり出始め、体と心は⾷べるという経験によって満 たされます。

脂肪少々とある程度のタンパク質を加える 脂肪の摂りすぎは害があり ますが、脂肪を完全に抜く ことは好ましくありませ ん。脳の大半は脂肪ででき ており、必須脂肪酸は脳に 欠かせない物質だからで す。脳において記憶の生成 と維持に関与するシナプス は脂肪からできています。毎日の⾷事から適度な 脂肪をとることが大切です。アーユルヴェーダ は、他の油や脂肪よりもギー（バターを純化した 油）を勧めています。アーモンドオイルも⼼の健 康によい油とされています。 タンパク質も記憶に関連する神経伝達物質を活性 化するもので、同じく脳に大切です。そのため、 ⾼タンパク質の自然な⾷べ物を摂ることは、⼼の 柔軟性とともに⾔語記憶および非⾔語記憶を改善 することができます。⾼タンパク⾷品として、大 豆、ダル豆のなかま、ヒヨコマメのもやし、ムン グマメ（緑豆）のもやし、⽜乳、ヨーグルト、 キャベツ、カリフラワー、ブロッコリ、カブ、ニ ンジン、セロリ、とうもろこし、キュウリなどが 挙げられます。アーユルヴェーダはサトヴィック な⾷べ物を提唱するので、タンパク質を植物性の ⾷べ物のみから摂ることが望ましいと考えます。

ローダーラは浄化や若返りの効果がとても⾼いパン チャカルマ療法の1つです。驚くほどリラックスで きる療法で、⼼と体のストレスや緊張を優しく取り除いて くれます。 「シローダーラ」という⾔葉は、頭を意味する「シロ」と 流れを意味する「ダーラ」から出来ています。つまり、シ ローダーラは、オイルを額に絶え間なく⾧時間垂らすこと で、リラクゼーションや若返り、癒しの効果をもたらして くれます。魂を若返らせ、健康を維持することで⼼身のバ ランスを得るのです。 シローダーラは外用油剤療法に分類され、4つの特化した 形（タイラダーラ、クシーラダーラ、タクラダーラ、ジャ ラダーラ）があります。

一般に信じられていることと違い、 呼吸法は息を深く吸って吐くとい うだけではなく、それ以上のもの です。呼吸法を意味する「プラー ナヤーマ」は2つの⾔葉に由来し ています。プラーナは生命力を、 アヤーマは拡大を意味します。つ まり、プラーナヤーマは生命力の 拡大という意味なのです。 ラックスした状態で座ります。のんびりとした雰囲気が ⼼を落ち着かせ、リラックスした気持ちにさせます。 ステップ2. 所定の温度と⾼さから薬用オイルが額の中ほ どに向かってリズミカルに流れていきます。温かいオイ ルは神経系で増悪したヴァータを鎮める効果があります。 ステップ3 この一連の流れは30〜35分ほど続き、その あとでアーユルヴェーダのヘッドマッサージが行われま す。ツボを刺激することにより神経が休まり、⼼を静か に、明るく、澄んだ状態にしてくれます。

ラーミは太古の昔から天然の 神経滋養強壮剤および強力な 脳強壮剤として知られてきました。 インド医学の父と呼ばれるスシュル タが紀元前600年に書いた「スシュ ルタ・サンヒター」にもその使用が 記されています。以後、スシュルタ の功績を讃えなかったアーユル ヴェーダ医師は1⼈としていませ ん。 ブラーミはマンドゥーカパルニとい う名称でも知られていて、知力を⾼ める効果が⾼く、アーユルヴェーダ においては最も薬効の⾼いハーブの 1つとされています。適用範囲は、 気管⽀炎や喘息から、知力の向上、 コレステロール値のコントロールに ⾄るまで多岐にわたります。ブラー ミはアーユルヴェーダおいておそら く最良の神経強壮剤でしょう。⾧・ 短期の記憶力を⾼めることは臨床試 験からも明らかになっており、記憶 力、学習能力、集中力を補う脳の若 返り薬として古くから使用されてき ました。

⽜乳カップ 1杯 サフラン 2本分 イチジク １個 アーモンド 4個 くるみ 2個

デーツ 2個 大粒レーズン 6個 カルダモン １個

作り方

全てのドライフルーツとナッツを 6－8時間⽔に浸ける。デーツは2時 間浸ける。アーモンドは薄皮をむく。 サフランはコップ１杯の⽜乳に浸け る。 ⽔に浸けておいたドライフルーツ、 ナッツ、デーツをグラインダーに⼊ れ、スプーン2－3杯の⽜乳を加え ペースト状にする。 鍋にドライフルーツペーストと⽜乳 を⼊れ2分ほど加熱する。 熱いう ちにお飲みください。
