Edit Speak Dear Readers, Welcome to the July issue of Paramayu.

Our world moves at breakneck speed today. There’s an unquenchable need in every one of us to race ahead; sometimes without even knowing why. The result is stress, which impacts our health in known and unknown ways. Given the serious and all pervasive nature of this condition, we decided to dedicate an issue of Paramayu to understanding it.

Our opening article features an in-depth analysis of the causes and effects of stress. We've also described in some detail how stress can impact the various physical systems in the body. This article will serve as a reference point to you as you browse through the magazine.

For most people these days, stress is an ineviteble by-product of a demanding lifestyle. They believe stress can neither be escaped nor treated. But that’s a misconception, one that our case study attempts to clear by showing how Ayurveda treated stress by using a multi-facted approach.

Stress is not an issue local to India alone. Egle Terekaite, featured in our International Section is a former fashion model who was touched by the power of yoga. Understanding the impact of societal pressure on young women, she now spends her time advising them on the concept of true beauty – one that stems from within. She uses the principles of yoga, such as healthy living and regular meditation, to teach others how to manage unrealistic expectations of the society.

Parents are one of the chief social groups that deal with stress, which originates primarily from their concern for the well being of their children. Steven Rudolph’s article gives special inputs to parents by offering a set of 10 Rules they must follow.

Complementing this piece, we have another article that deals exclusively with kids’ health. It has pointers on recognising stress among young adults and managing it.

e live in a world that is abounding with contradictions. We have all the conveniences that modern times can offer us; at the same time, we're also seeing a spike in lifestyle related disorders like stress.

Stress. What is this mysterious evil that insidiously creeps into our lives and causes so much mayhem?

According to Ayurveda, stress is born from unfulfilled desire, which brings in its wake anger, envy, frustration, and depression.Very often people obsess over the fact that they've failed, but never stop to question why. Perhaps they didn't have the quality or resources to do justice to the task. Maybe, they lacked the planning and perseverance needed to achieve their goal. Or it could be that there were other factors (environmental, social, religious) that were working against them.

Unfortunately, people fail to look into all these reasons and blame others for their shortcomings. Unable to understand what is happening and why, they become really stressed out.

For most, stress is a minor concern. They believe that the 'bad mood' or 'unhappy phase' will pass and things will be back to normal soon.

Unfortunately, what they don't know is that stress can be the precursor to a host of health problems, including loss of appetite, sleepless nights, and upset stomach.

To escape stress, people must give up the need to control things and acknowledge their failure. Accepting your circumstances brings you peace. At the same time, it gives you the opportunity to evaluate what happened. If you're serious enough, you can use this period of contemplation to plan things better and pursue your dream with renewed effort and, hopefully, a better strategy.

The bottom line is replace 'chinta' with 'chintan'. Chinta is when negative emotions like worry, anger, envy, and blame form a vicious loop in your life, upsetting your peace of mind. Chintan, on the other hand, is the process of positive reflection that helps you find ways and means to achieve your goal. The former can wreck your life while the latter can give it direction. So, focus your energies on the contemplation of positive attributes. That's the path to sath-chithaananda.

STRESS and its effect on physical systems

Stress is a universal problem that affects all of us at some point in our lives.

Learning to identify when you are under stress, what is causing it, and how you can cope with it can greatly improve both your mental and physical well-being.

S

tress is the body's way of responding to any kind of demand, and can be brought on by both good and bad experiences. When people are stressed by something, their body reacts by releasing chemicals into the blood, which gives them more energy and strength. This can be a good thing if it happens occasionally; however, if you take on stress too frequently, you will end up feeling weak and drained.

EFFECT OF STRESS ON DIFFERENT PHYSICAL SYSTEMS MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM When the body is stressed, the muscles tense up. This muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction, the body's defence mechanism against injury and pain. When muscles are tensed for a prolonged period of time, they may release harmful chemicals into the blood, causing pain, stiffness, sprains, and other related disorders in the affected part of the body.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Stress makes breathing fast and irregular and the airways become constricted. This may trigger dyspnoea, asthma, emphysema, or other lung diseases, where it becomes difficult to breathe properly due to lack of oxygen.

Sympathetic nervous system response is fairly sudden. It prepares the body to react in a dangerous condition or acute stress. Body shifts all its energy resources toward fighting against a life threat or fleeing from an enemy.

CARDIOVASCULAR Repeated acute stress and persistent chronic stress may also contribute to inflammation in the circulatory system (particularly the coronary arteries), paving the way for a heart attack. Stress can also affect cholesterol levels, increase the heart rate, and lead to irregular spasms in the heart muscles.

ENDOCRINE When you’re stressed, the hypothalamus signals the autonomic nervous system and the pituitary gland, which then start to produce stress hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine, and cortisol.

GASTROINTESTINAL Stress affects not only the digestion process, but also the absorption of nutrients. This can lead to a variety of symptoms like repeated acidity, flatulence, pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, and constipation.

NERVOUS SYSTEM Autonomic nervous system has a direct role to play in the physical response to stress. Sympathetic nervous system response is fairly sudden. CAUSES OF STRESS

Stress can be brought on by many factors, ranging from the physical (such as fear of something dangerous) to the emotional (such as worrying about the family or stability of your job).

Some of the most common triggers of stress are: 1. SURVIVAL STRESS You may have heard the phrase "fight or flight" . This is a common response to danger that is exhibited by people and animals alike. It prepares your body to either face danger or run from it.

2. INTERNAL STRESS Some people develop the habit of living a hurried, tense lifestyle that results from being under stress. Sometimes, they look for stressful situations and take on stress about things that may not even be stressful.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS

This is a response to things around you that cause stress, such as noise, crowds, and work or family pressure.

In men, chronic stress can affect testosterone production and sperm production and maturation. It can even lead to erectile dysfunction or impotence.

4. FATIGUE AND OVERWORK

Among women, high levels of stress may be associated with absent or irregular menstrual cycles, worsening premenstrual symptoms, more painful periods and changes in the length of cycles, disturbed menopausal phase with increased complications, or conception related problems.

As you can see, stress is like a silent saboteur that enters our life unseen and wreaks untold havoc on it, if not controlled.

Meaning of Life To fully understand stress, it is essential to first understand life. The mind is the master of all senses. It helps you execute day-to-day actions (like thinking, meditating, concentrating, and taking decisions) by using a combination of various internal processes.

Of all this, probably the most important function is the production, retention, and perpetuation of thoughts. It is because of the mind's ability to think that it is called the fastest organ in the world. It can transport you anywhere instantaneously, unhindered by either space or time.

The constant changes that take place around us give rise to desires, which the mind then tries to fulfill using the sensory organs of the body. These desires can produce both positive and negative

impacts. It is the duty of the intellect to decide which desire to pursue and which to let go.

All creatures in the universe are created from the elements found in nature. There are three core essences (gunas) that encompass all those elements - satvaguna, rajoguna, and tamoguna.

These gunas define if the object under their influence is going to create a positive or negative effect. All three of them are present in every living being in varying degrees. Whichever guna happens to dominate determines the overall quality of the person/thing.

Stress and the Mind In general, stress arises in one of two cases: a) When you don't get something you like, or b) When you get something you don't like.

Each person is a member of different social groups and, as such, assumes different roles in his life. He is a parent, a boss, a son, a teacher, and a friend all rolled into one. Through these varying facets of his personality, man tries to achieve pleasure and happiness. However, more often than not, these roles clash with each other, creating tension for the person.

What sparked your interest in Ayurveda?

I left home for my first modeling assignment at the age of 13. Since then, I have travelled all over the world. I also actively volunteered in yoga camps, animal shelters, and youth organizations when I was completing my major in International Relations and Politics from the Lithuanian University.

Q4. With so many kid-centric shows being aired on television, how stressful or healthy is it for kids to be a part of it?

FK: I was part of a kids’ reality show. Dance India Dance Little Masters was never stressful for me. In fact, it was a stepping stone to success and I learnt a lot from it, not just about dancing but also about competition and struggle at a pretty young age.

ll parents want the best for their children. They want to see them healthy, happy, and wellmannered. And, most of all, they want to see them turn out as achievers. But, parents often feel frustrated in the process of raising children from infancy to adulthood, constantly searching for the elusive strategy to deal effectively with each problematic situation.

Parents tend to draw on past experience; but, at the same time, they feel overwhelmed by the complexities of the changed times, a world radically different from what they grew up in. They feel unsure and uncertain whether their parents' methods would still be applicable in an age of satellite TV, computer games, and junk food. Confused, they turn to books and the Internet to find advice from leading psychologists and experts.

However, they often find the solution to be fragmented, vague, complicated, impersonal, or incomplete.

What parents today need, instead, is a simple set of rules to guide them at every step, so that whatever challenge they may face, they know exactly what to do. These rules have to be easy to remember as well as intuitive. They also need to be all-encompassing, so that they can provide the requisite solution for an over-energetic seven year old as well as a confused fifteen year old.

After more than two decades in the field of education, working with thousands of children, parents and teachers, I have developed a set of principles which I call the 10 Laws of Learning. I have derived these laws from proven, universal principles that have stood the test of time, and have created a simple framework that is both

odern lifestyle has given us many conveniences, but it is not without its evils. One of them is depression, which is on track to becoming something of an epidemic all over the world. High-stress jobs, hectic lifestyle, poor nutrition, and lack of connect with nature are some of the reasons why an estimated one sixth of the population experiences depression at least once in their lifetime.

Vishwajeet was one such unfortunate person who fell prey to this disease triggered by some complications in his family life. When he came to Jiva, he’d been suffering from depression for over a year and was on allopathic medicines to treat the condition.

Treating Depression A Jiva Case Study Depression is real. It affects over 16% of the urban population. Read how Jiva successfully treated one such patient using Ayurveda.

Dr. Sanjay explained to the patient that depression and stress were caused by the aggravation of vata dosha, which leads to an imbalance in sattva, rajas, and tamas.

This imbalance affects the heart – the seat of the manas srota, making the person emotionally sensitive. More critically, the brain also gets negatively impacted owing to disruption in chemicals known as neurotransmitters. They are responsible for delivering messages between brain cells, so any imbalance can disturb communication and leave you in a poor emotional state.

Typical Line of Treatment At Jiva, we treat depression at different levels because this illness affects not just the mind, but also the body and spirit.

Typically, the emphasis is on calming the vata dosha and boosting sattva guna in the body, which returns peace and stability to the mind.

The physical aspect of the condition is treated using medication while the mental and psychological aspects are treated using yoga and pranayama. Patients see best results when the treatment is supplemented by dietary and lifestyle changes.

Dietary Recommendation for the Patient Excessive consumption of katu (pungent), amla (sour) and spicy tastes, and intake of vidahi (hot), tikshna (dry) foods are causes of mental disorders. Same is the case with heavy and processed foods. Therefore, such foods were strictly forbidden for the patient.

The patient was asked to follow a vata pacifying diet, of which fresh fruits and fresh vegetables were a large part. Milk and milk products were also recommended.

The patient was asked to avoid deep fried dishes, spicy and hot food, tea, coffee, chocolate, and meat products, especially if they were pre-cooked and packaged.

Emphasis was laid on consuming organic and fresh foods.

That's why it's imperative we grab a minute for ourselves, take a step back, breath deeply, and clear our head. We must stop and think, “Is this worrying really going to solve my problem? Can it help me succeed in any way?”

Sugar - 1 kg

Water - 1 litre



Gooseberry (Amla) - 1 kg

Freshly squeezed lemons - 12

Mint leaves for garnishing

Process 1. De-seed the gooseberries and cut them into pieces.

Salt them and leave them to dry.

2. After an hour, put the pieces in the juicer and extract the juice.

3. Boil sugar and water to make a semi-thick sugar syrup. Keep aside to cool.

4. When the syrup cools down, add gooseberry juice, lemon juice, and ginger paste.

5. Stir well for about 15 minutes and then transfer the contents into a glass bottle. Your gooseberry juice concentrate is now ready.
