You Cannot Serve Meals Over Zoom As coronavirus shut down schools in mid-March, education quickly became what we now know as ‘distance learning.’ But some school services cannot be delivered remotely. You cannot serve meals over Zoom. For many families, though, school meal programs are essential. On a regular, non-pandemic school day, the Amery School Nutrition program provides free or low-cost meals to 1020 students. With the pandemic, many parents were suddenly out of work, and unemployment skyrocketed. In response, the Amery School Nutrition staff sprung into action trying to figure out how to get food to the kids who depend on it without putting themselves, or the students, at risk. School was closed on March 17, and Amery managed to deliver 2136 meals less than one week later on March 23. Twice-perweek meal delivery eventually shifted to once-per-week meal pickup by early April and has continued successfully. Each week, families that are signed up for the service, pick up five breakfasts and five lunches for each child in the household age 18 and younger. Meal packages include a variety of foods. Each breakfast contains whole grains, proteins, fruit and milk. Each lunch contains proteins, whole grains, vegetables, fruit and milk. Families have shared that the meals are bringing a sense of normalcy to them during these uncertain times.
