Abstract

This paper explores three different commonly administered mental health assessments. These three assessments are The Mental Status Exam (MSE) (brief version), The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The MSE is for client mental status. The BDI accesses the level of depression a client is experiencing. The BAI accesses the level of anxiety a client is experiencing. In doing this assignment and the different practice assessments, we will get comfortable with the instruments that are utilized as a part of diagnosing and additionally treating clients with mental health illness issues. These basic tools are helpful for HUS experts to portray and comprehend the mental status of a client. While acquiring these assessments, certain data is required. The purpose, value, and usefulness of these assessments will be explained. For this paper, an anonymous pretend client will be created and a practice MSE assessment will be conducted and reported. Genetic testing is used to determine the risk of a patient or patient's offspring developing genetic diseases. This is done with DNA sequencing in adults and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PDG) on embryos. These methods of genetic testing are effective means of determining the likelihood of developing diseases such as Huntington's disease, a disease resulting from trinucleotide repeat on chromosome 4p16.3 that causes uncontrollable muscle movement and decrease in cognitive function. However, they only determine probability, which isn't an entirely reliable means of knowing whether or not symptoms will arise.

Another method of genetic testing is extracting one cell from an 8–cell embryo and using preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PDG) to determine the presence of disorder–causing genes (Holt, 2012).

These methods of genetic testing are accurate, as long as the genetic origin of the tested disease is known (Mahdieh & Rabbani, 2013), but their reliability is harmed by the fact that the results determine probability of diseases occurring (Holt, 2012). Even though a test accurately determines the presence of a given mutation, that mutation may only indicate a patient's predisposition to developing symptoms. Since other genes or environmental factors may play a part in the tested disease, the results of testing aren't entirely reliable for a conclusion of whether or not a patient will develop the disease.

One disease that can be tested for using these methods is Huntington's disease, which causes involuntary spasms and contractions and a decline of coordination and cognitive ability (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man [OMIM], 2014). Psychopathology: A Case Study

`In the past, I worked in such a research setting, where if a person was found to meet criteria for opiate dependence they received treatment, however if even slightly short of DSM–IV criteria for the disorder they would have to look elsewhere. This was a continual concern for me, as the person who met criteria was not always the person with the most distress, and alternative treatments were not easy for people to find. The second part of the problem is when multiple disorders that are currently considered separate and very similar. Having people with seemingly very different patterns be classified as having the same disorder was something I also saw frequently at my work. In the case of substance dependance we would have some patients who felt they could quit a substance if not for withdrawal, and other who felt the substance controlled their life. To me these seem like different problems, and I wouldn't think of treating them in the same way. I feel the same way about persons entering treatment for major depression that began with a specific event but lasting unreasonably long compared to a person who didn't have a clear event that started the episode. For the first example it could be a lack of coping strategies, yet for the other it may be cognitive distortions, yet both would be listed as the same disorder. As I previously stated, the opposite also seems problematic. Using the previous example, the cognitive distortions resulting in a major depressive episode could also result in dysthymia. Biological theories of disorders also don't seem to support these separations, with similar neuro–chemical problems being associated with ranges of disorders. Together, these two issues call into question the accuracy in our current system of categorical diagnosis in finding discrete clusters of symptoms. The use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM–5), has been a controversial issue ever since its release in 2013 (Young, 2013). Throughout this essay, the issue regarding psychological case formulation as an alternative to the DSM–5 would be addressed by viewing the DSM–5 and psychological case formulation as two distinct diagnostic tools that are used separately in the assessment phase in clinical psychology. Since a case formulation takes into account the situational factors that may contribute to a client's suffering and breaks down a whole issue into smaller parts, this method would seem to be more apt in assessing and diagnosing a client who may have comorbid disorders. Kennedy & Llewelyn stated that clinicians would use psychological case formulations to construct hypotheses about what a client is suffering from (as cited in Johnstone et al., 2011, p. 4). Butler argued that a psychological case formulation differs from a "medical diagnosis" (as cited in Johnstone et al., 2011, p. 7), in which it comes up with statements as to what might be going wrong instead of what is really going wrong. Diagnostic imaging such as MRI, PET/CT scans and X–Rays all allow doctors to "see" inside your body. This type of imaging takes photographs of your bones and organs, allowing them to much more easily narrow down the cause of a disease or injury. 296.32 (F33.1) Major Depressive Disorder, recurrent episode, moderate severity, with anxious distress. Ms. Client meets eight of the nine diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Specifically, during several periods of time she experienced depressed mood, diminished interest in things she enjoyed to do, hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, decreased concentration, and suicidal thoughts without intent. Additionally, as Ms. Client expressed, these symptoms are source of continuing distress and interfere with her academics and social functioning. Also, her symptoms started four years prior to the psychological assessment and persisted intermittently since then, lasting for several weeks to several months, with the most recent period of extended length (enduring two weeks) approximately one year ago. In my future social work career, it is imperative to be cognizant of my personal experiences and preconceptions regarding mental illness. Diagnostic Essay "We are family, I got all my sisters with me." I strongly relate this verse, from the hit song to my personal family. I have a large, diverse family that always works together to help everyone succeed. Anytime I or someone else needs help there is always someone there. In addition to my blood relatives, my family extends to my classmates, coworkers, church, pets, and friends. My family works as one large system. This system has supported me emotionally, financially, and morally. I have been provided with everything I need to be successful in my community, job, and life by the entirety of my family.

Anytime a new or life–changing event would come up, my family would encourage me to take the opportunity head on and do my absolute best. My most recent opportunity involved me becoming a camp counselor for young kids. When the opportunity was first presented I was hesitant to take the chance. My parents influenced my opinion by showing me how I could learn valuable leadership skills and strongly impact the lives of young children. Anything that has come from me was a gift for my family. Although my family has not taken much from me, I have lost some opportunities because of it. For example, I have lost the opportunity to get specialized training for soccer because my younger sister needed someone to watch her after school. Family dinners were also a large setback.
