28TH OCTOBER, 1938 - 15TH DECEMBER, 2024
Sylvia Marie Rolle was born on the picturesque island of Arthur’s Town, Cat Island on 28th October 1938 to her loving parents, Wilfred and Rosalie Rolle nee Miller. Her maternal grandparents were Robert and Charity Miller, who shaped her rich family heritage. Sylvia was the fifth of seven children. Four boys and three girls: Allen, William, Thelma, Marilyn, Sylvia, Warren and Willis. She was a cherished sibling in a family filled with love and resilience. It is known that persons born in October are balanced, strong-willed, passionate, expressive, sociable and exhibit strong leadership which are all qualities that Sylvia portrayed over her lifetime.
A LIFE ROOTED IN HARDWORK
Sylvia grew up immersed in the simplicity and beauty of island life. She embraced the values of hard work and community spending her mornings and afternoons tending fields of beans and peas or assisting in her family’s petty shop which sold essential items such as lard, tomatoes, flour, and cream.
A JOURNEY IN EDUCATION & EARLY CAREER
Sylvia resided with her maternal grandparents until she became a teenager when she relocated to her parents’ home in Arthur’s Town. She was schooled at Arthur’s Town All Age School under the tutelage of the late Rodney Bain, Rev. Edwin Taylor, Harold Poitier and Dean William Granger. Mr. Granger’s mentorship held such a sentimental value in Sylvia’s education that even two weeks prior to her passing, she referenced him jubilantly as one of

her former educators. These educators played a pivotal role in her education and training, and even inspired her to become a teacher. In the early 1950s, Sylvia became a monitor at the Arthur’s Town All Age School, where she was accompanied by Mavis, Gloria, and Mary along with a few of her other childhood friends. Noteworthy, Sylvia in 1956 sat her Bahamas Junior Certificate (Grade III) and earned Credits in English Literature, Religious Knowledge, and Geography. She earned Passes in English Language, Hygiene & Physiology and French. She continued as a monitor at Acklins All Age School in Snug Corner.
Her journey as an educator took her to Long Bay Cays All Age School in Andros from 1960-1967. The family then relocated to New Providence. She earned her Teacher’s Certificate in the early 1970s at The Bahamas Teachers’ Training College. Her first teaching post in New Providence was at Oakes Field Primary School. Afterwards, she taught at Uriah McPhee, followed by Sayle’s Primary School. In 1971, she sat the University of London’s General Certificate of Education Examination where she passed Religious Knowledge and in 1973 she passed English Language, English Literature and History. She was always was a lifelong learner. She excelled by attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree from The College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph Minnesota. In 1976, she joined the H.O. Nash faculty, where she served for 18 years. Sylvia retired in 1994 from the Public Service after serving thirty seven (37) years. She was honored by The Primary Principal’s Association for her long and dedicated service. She was a member of The Bahamas Union of Teachers and the Retired

Teachers a Branch of the Union. She continued her passion for education by teaching briefly at St. Anne’s High School. Her excellence in education was demonstrated when she was appointed as the Principal of St. Barnabas Day School. Her dedication was unwavering.
She completed an Associate of Arts Degree in Law and Criminal Justice Studies at The College of The Bahamas in 1999.
Sylvia was a strong advocate for discipline and good manners, instilling these values in the children she taught. She believed in the importance of respect and proper behavior and was known for her saying that “everyone should have hair to speak,” a metaphor for confidence and dignity.
A UNION OF HEARTS
Granville O’Brien Sr. with his mother and three siblings relocated from Bluff Cat Island to Arthur’s Town where he pursued Sylvia. They were childhood friends. They later became engaged and eventually married on 26th December 1958 officiated by Rev. William James Granger. During the course of their marriage, she affectionately called her husband her “bups.” This union was blessed with six children: one (1) girl and five (5) boys. Rosalind, Ian (predeceased her), Rodney, Colin, Granville Jr. and Winston Paul O’Brien. Sylvia was loving, devoted wife and caring mother who loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly. Both Granville and Sylvia always wanted the best for their children encouraging them to pursue higher learning.

In New Providence, she worshipped at St. Barnabas Anglican Church which was known at “The Out Island Church.” Sylvia also cherished her role in the Anglican
Church Women (ACW), serving as President for one year. She was very active in her church from its inception. Additionally, she served on the Auxillary, Usher Board and she was a member of the Soup Kitchen. She was honored by the ACW in 2020 and in 2024. The Usher Board also recognized her outstanding and dedicated efforts.
Sylvia was dedicated to outreach, particularly through her work at the soup kitchen, where she and her team prepared potato bread, flour cake, cornbread, and pudding. She also fervently supported the St. Saviour Church Fair in Cat Island each October, helping to raise funds for the community.

Teaching was not just Sylvia’s profession; it was her calling. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond the classroom and into her home, where she welcomed children to learn, play, and grow alongside her own biological children. She created a space where every child felt loved and supported, leaving a profound impact on their lives.
A
LIFELONG LEARNER

THE INTRODUCTORY RITE
RECEPTION OF THE BODY
Celebrant: With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the body of our sister Sylvia for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us, therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the saints.
Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister Sylvia. We thank you for giving her to us, her family, and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
Celebrant: I bless the body of Sylvia with the Holy Water that recalls her baptism into Christ of which St. Paul writes: “All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death.” By baptism into His death we were buried together with Him, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might have a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.
All: Amen
THE ENTRANCE
Celebrant: Jesus said, I am the Resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in Me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His compassion never fails: every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23
Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. John 14:1
I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be the Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9
We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the Name of the Lord. Job 1:21
The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27
INTROIT HYMN .............................................A&M 438.................................... “How Bright These Glorious Spirit Shine”
1 How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their white array? How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day?
2 Lo! these are they from sufferings great who came to realms of light, and in the blood of Christ have washed those robes that shine so bright.
3 Now with triumphal palms they stand before the throne on high, and serve the God they love amidst the glories of the sky.
4 Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor sun with scorching ray: God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day
5 The Lamb, who dwells amid the throne, shall o'er them still preside, feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide.
6 In pastures green he'll lead his flock where living streams appear; and God the Lord from every eye shall wipe off every tear.
COLLECT FOR THE DEPARTED
Celebrant: Let us pray: Almighty God, we remember before You today Your servant Sylvia and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, You will receive her more and more into Your joyful service, that, with all who have served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

RESPONSORIAL HYMN ................................................................ “Through All the Changes Scenes Of Life” (CPWI 427)
1 Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ. Of his deliv'rance I will boast, till all that are distressed, from my example comfort take and lay their griefs to rest.
2 O magnify the LORD with me, exalt his holy name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came. The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliv'rance he affords to all who in his promise trust.
3 O taste and see that he is good; experience will decide how blest are they, and only they who in the LORD confide. Fear him, you saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make serving him your sole delight, your wants shall be his care.

GRADUAL HYMN ........................................................................................ “Pleasant Are Thy Courts Above” (CPWI 740)
1 Pleasant are Thy courts above In the land of light and love; Pleasant are Thy courts below In this land of sin and woe. O my spirit longs and faints For the converse of Thy saints, For the brightness of Thy face, For Thy fullness, God of grace.
2 Happy birds that sing and fly Round Thy altars, O Most High; Happier souls that find a rest In a heavenly Father's breast! Like the wandering dove that found No repose on earth around, They can to their ark repair And enjoy it ever there.

3 Happy souls, their praises flow Even in this vale of woe; Waters in the desert rise, Manna feeds them from the skies; On they go from strength to strength Till they reach Thy throne at length, At Thy feet adoring fall, Who hast led them safe through all.
4 Lord, be mine this prize to win; Guide me through a world of sin, Keep me by Thy saving grace, Give me at Thy side a place. Sun and shield alike Thou art; Guide and guard my erring heart. Grace and glory flow from Thee; Shower, O shower them, Lord, on me.

THE APOSTLE’S CREED
Celebrant: Let us with confidence and hope confess the faith into which we were baptized, as we say.
All: I Believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to
the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PREPARATION HYMN .................................................................................................... “Palms Of Glory Raiment Bright”
1 Palms of glory, raiment bright, crowns that never fade away, gird and deck the saints in light: priests and kings and conquerors they.
2 Yet the conquerors bring their palms to the Lamb amidst the throne, and proclaim in joyful psalms victory through his cross alone.
3 Kings for harps their crowns resign, crying, as they strike the chords, 'Take the kingdom, it is thine, King of kings and Lord of lords.'
4 Round the altar priests confess, if their robes are white as snow, 'twas the Saviour's righteousness, and his blood, that made them so.
5 They were mortal too like us: O, when we like them must die, may our souls translated thus triumph, reign, and shine on high.
Celebrant: Through Your Goodness, Lord we have this bread and wine to offer, the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands. They will become our spiritual food.
All: All things come from you, O Lord, and of your own do we give you. Blessed be God forever. Amen

COMMUNION HYMNS ....................................................... “ Oh What Their Joy And Their Glory Must Be” (CPWI 695)
1 Oh, what their joy and their glory must be, those endless Sabbaths the blessed ones see! Crowns for the valiant, to weary ones rest; God shall be all, and in all, ever blest.
“AND
“I
2 In new Jerusalem joy shall be found, blessings of peace shall forever abound; wish and fulfillment are not severed there, nor the things prayed for come short of the pray'r.
3 We, where no troubles distraction can bring, safely the anthems of Zion shall sing; while for Your grace, Lord, their voices of praise Your blessed people shall evermore raise.
4 Now let us worship our Lord and our King, joyfully raising our voices to sing: Praise to the Father, and praise to the Son, praise to the Spirit, to God, Three in One.
O FATHER MINDFUL OF THE LOVE ”
1 And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.
2 Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.
3 And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast, O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.
4 And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.
AM THE BREAD OF LIFE” ( CPWI 496)
I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall not hunger; he who believes in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father draw him.
And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day.
The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and he who eats of this bread, he shall live for ever, he shall live for ever.
THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER
All: Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your son Jesus Christ and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow not crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.
1 And can it be that I should gain An int'rest in the Savior's blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me?
Refrain:
Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me!
2 'Tis mystery all! Th'Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine! 'Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. [Refrain]
3 He left His Father's throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam's helpless race; 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. [Refrain]
4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature's night; Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee. [Refrain]
5 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him is mine! Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach th'eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. [Refrain]

3 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia, Alleluia!
4 And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia!
5 But then there breaks a still more glorious day: the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on His way. Alleluia, Alleluia!
6 From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, in praise of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia!
GRAVESIDE HYMNS
1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away. Change and decay in all around I see. O thou who changest not, abide with me.
“ABIDE WITH ME”
4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless, ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me.
5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes. Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
3 I need thy presence every passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like thyself my guide and strength can be? Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
”WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER”
1 When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, "It is well, it is well with my soul."
It is well with my soul; it is well, it is well with my soul.
2 Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control: that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and has shed his own blood for my soul. Refrain
3 My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! my sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! Refrain
4 O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend; even so, it is well with my soul. Refrain
“GLAD REUNION DAY”
There will be a happy meeting in Heaven, I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below Gathered on that blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow That will be a glad reunion day.
A glad day, a wonderful day, A glad day, a glorious day There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day.
When we live a million years in that wonderful place Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace That will be a glad reunion day.
A glad day, a wonderful day, A glad day, a glorious day There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day.
”FATHER ALONG”
Tempted and tried we’re oft made to wonder, Why it should be thus all the day long; While there are others living about us, Never molested though in the wrong.
Farther along we’ll know all about it, Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up, don't worry, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by.
When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year.
Faithful till death said our loving Master, A few more days to labor and wait; Toils of the road will then seem as nothing, As we sweep through the beautiful gate.
When we see Jesus coming in glory, When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We'll understand it all by and by.
"IT’S
ALRIGHT NOW”
There was a time I traveled
A lonely sinful road
Beneath a heavy burden bending low
But now all things are different
For Jesus took my load
It’s alright now I’m His I know
It’s alright now
For I am in my Savior’s care
It’s alright now
My Savior hears and answers prayer
He’ll walk beside me
‘Til I climb the heav’nly stair
And ev’rything is alright now
A-down a lonely pathway
Without a friend to guide
I walked in sin and sorrow all alone
‘Til Jesus came and found me
And drew me to His side
It’s alright now for I’m His own
No more in sin I wander
No more in darkness roam
The Lord has placed
My feet on higher ground
Each day new heights I’m gaining
My soul is nearing home
It’s alright now I’m heaven bound
