GIBSON

17TH JANUARY,1962 – 11TH AUGUST, 2024

On January 17th, 1962, Allan Henry and Marinetta Hanna (née Rolle) welcomed a new blessing into their Anderson Street home: a baby girl named Constance Marie. Affectionately known as Connie, she was their third daughter and the fourth of their five children.

Allan and Marinetta cultivated a nurturing home for their family, ensuring that their children were raised with strong Christian values and understood the importance of love: for each other, extended family, community, and most importantly, their Lord and Savior. These are principles that Connie carried with her each day of her life.

Connie received her primary and secondary education at the Cathedral Day School and St. John’s College. Always keenly organized and talented with numbers, Connie obtained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Sojourner Douglass College in Nassau, The Bahamas. She would use these skills to bless others and in her personal, professional, and civic life.

One of Connie’s first jobs after graduating from high school was in the Accounts Department at Taylor Industries. It was there in the 1980s where she met the love of her life, Carl Gibson, who was also employed at the company. Connie often recalled how every day she would meet a mysterious flower on her desk from a secret admirer. One day, she cornered the cleaning lady to find out it was Carl who was leaving the flowers. Carl would lovingly recall how he was too shy to approach her directly.

His efforts were fruitful, and the two married on July 27, 1991. Upon their union, Connie gained a stepson, Cameron Alexander, who she adored and loved as her very own. The couple also welcomed two daughters: Carla Alexis and Chelsi Riché. Carl and Connie were made for each other and created a beautiful home for their family. They balanced each other out and gave their children a true example of a devoted marriage. Faith was important to Connie and Carl, and the family attended Rhodes Memorial Methodist Church and St. Agnes Anglican Church.

Connie put her all into everything she did. After a 20-year career at Taylor Industries, she transitioned to the Bahamas Electrical Corporation (now Bahamas Power and Light) in 2001. She initially worked in the Audit Department, then Debt Recovery, and finally managed the Proofing department, before retiring in 2022.

However, retirement did not slow Connie down one bit. Her daughter Carla always joked that for a retired woman she always had something to do. But Connie believed in keeping herself busy, and she used her acumen and talents to support those she loved and the causes she believed in. There was nothing she wasn’t willing to do to ensure her family accomplished their dreams. She was integral to each step of the process on their journeys and was always ready to offer advice, take action, encourage, pray, and listen. She was the financial controller of the family and the accountant for Carl and Carla’s businesses. She was grateful that her and Carl’s values of hard work and dedication manifested in their children, and she beamed with pride at each of their accomplishments: from Cameron gaining his license as a Master Mariner, to Carla opening her child development and research center, and Chelsi graduating at the top of her medical school class. And with each milestone, she gave all the glory to God.

Connie was an enthusiastic member of East Nassau Rotary Club and served as auditor for YWCA BAHAMAS. She also believed in the importance of advancing the work of the Lord. As a member of Rhodes Memorial Methodist Church, Connie was a choir member and served as treasurer. At St. Agnes Anglican church, she was part of a wide variety of groups, including the Finance ministry, Rededication and Renewal Ministry, and in charge of the Barnabas Ministry, which involved calling members to encourage them to return to church. Connie was also a choir member and leader at weekday mass.

Connie’s life was the essence of love, and her personality was like a magnet that drew people to her. Everyone with whom she came into contact grew to love and respect her. She poured that love into everyone she came in contact with, including her extended family members, her in-laws (especially her mother-in-law, Maybell Gibson), the people she adopted as children, her beloved friends, her travel companions, and church community. Connie was happiest when she could help others.

In 2023, Connie was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and you better believe that did not slow her down. She continued to pour into everything and everyone around her until the very end. Connie relied on her strong and steadfast faith in God that carried her through every difficult moment. One of her favorite hymns was “What a Friend We Have In Jesus,” and she uplifted His name every chance she could. The way she lived her life was a testament of her faith, and she inspired everyone around her.

Constance Marie Hanna-Gibson has left a legacy of unwavering faith, love, and servanthood that will never be forgotten.

ORDER of SERVICE

RECEPTION OF THE BODY

Celebrant: With faith in Jesus, we receive the body of our sister CONSTANCE for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us, therefore, with confidence pray to God our Heavenly Father, the giver of Life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister CONSTANCE We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES

Celebrant: Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His compassion never fails, every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23

Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1

I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9

We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. Job1:21

INTROIT HYMN

The King of love my Shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am His, And He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow My ransomed soul He leadeth, And, where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth.

The King Of My Shepherd Is ( CPWI 476 )

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love He sought me, And on His shoulder gently laid, And home rejoicing brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill With Thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy Cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight; Thy unction grace bestoweth; And oh, what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise Within Thy house forever.

COLLECT FOR PURITY

All: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLECT FOR THE DEPARTED:

Celebrant: Let us pray:

Almighty God, we remember before you today your faithful servant CONSTANCE and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, you will receive her more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have faithfully served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

SCRIPTURE LESSON .................................. Wisdom 3:1 – 5, 9 ...................................... read by Tiffany Gibson

Reader: A Reading from the Book of Wisdom chapter 3 verses 1 to 5 and verse 9

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of Himself. Those who trust in Him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with Him in love, because grace and mercy are upon His elect, and He watches over His holy ones.

PSALM 23 ....................................................................................................................... St. Agnes Church Choir

EPISTLE ................................................... 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:9 .....................................read by Tamal Hanna

Reader: A Reading from the Second Epistle to the Corinthians chapter 4 verses 16 to chapter 5 verse 9

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling— if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

GRADUAL HYMN ....................................................................

Praise To The Lord The Almighty ( CPWI 384 )

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is your health and salvation! Come, all who hear; now to His temple draw near, join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigneth; Shieldeth thee gently from harm. Or when fainting sustaineth Hast thou not seen how thy heart’s wishes have been Granted in what He ordaineth ?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; surely His goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if to the end He befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before Him. Let the Amen sound from His people again; gladly for aye we adore him.

John 14:1 - 6

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Celebrant: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according St. John chapter 14 verses 1 to 6 All: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you may be also.

And you know the way where I am going.Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by me.

Celebrant: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to Christ our Lord

SERMON

APOSTLES’ CREED:

Celebrant: Let us with confidence and hope confess the faith into which were baptized, as we say

All: I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN .....................................

O Jesus I Have Promised To Serve Thee To The End ( CPWI 672 )

O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my Friend; I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my Guide.

Oh, let me feel Thee near me; The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear; My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin.

Oh, let me hear Thee speaking, In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will; Oh. speak to reassure me, To hasten, or control; Oh, speak, and make me listen, Thou Guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee That where Thou art in glory There shall Thy servant be; And Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; Oh, give me grace to follow, My Master and my Friend.

Oh, let me see Thy footmarks, And in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly Is in Thy strength alone. Oh, guide me, call me, draw me, Uphold me to the end; And then in heaven receive me, My Saviour and my Friend.

ELEMENT BEARERS ............................................................ Lynden Rahming Jr, Gina Stubbs, TaNy’ah Gibson

Celebrant: Through your goodness, Lord, we have this bread and wine to offer, the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands. They will become our spiritual food.

All: All things come from you, O Lord, and of your own do we give you. Blessed be God for ever. Amen

THE EUCHARIST PRAYER

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father almighty, everlasting God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of life eternal. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant: Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender compassion you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation.

On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Celebrant: Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son.

All: We remember His death. We proclaim His resurrection We await His coming in glory.

Celebrant: And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus our Lord and Redeemer. As we partake of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John The Baptist, St. Agnes and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal inheritance; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:

All: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Celebrant: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

All: Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen.

Celebrant: We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ.

All: Though we are many, we are one Body, because we all share in one Bread.

THE COMMUNION

Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

All: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.

AGNUS DEI:

All: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest eternal.

And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s tree, and having with us Him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.

Look, Father, look on His anointed face, and only look on us as found in Him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord.

And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.

And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

HYMN ................................................................................................ O Jesu Blessed Lord To Thee ( CPWI 612 )

O Jesus, blessed Lord, to Thee My heartfelt thanks forever be, Who hast so lovingly bestowed On me Thy body and Thy blood.

Break forth, my soul, for joy and say What wealth is come to me this day! My Savior dwells within my heart: How blest am I! How good Thou art!

All: Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

And can it be that I should gain An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood?

Died He for me, who caused His pain— For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

’Tis myst’ry all: th’ Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above—

So free, so infinite His grace— Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray— I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach th’ eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

THE COMMENDATION

Officiant: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant CONSTANCE with your saints. All: Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting

Officiant: You only are immortal, the creator and maker of mankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

The celebrant sprinkles the casket with Holy Water to remind us that in the Waters of Baptism we were made members of Christ, children of God, and inheritors of the Kingdom of Heaven. Incense is used as a symbol of the prayers of the Church. Revelations 5:8, 8:3-5

Officiant: Lord have mercy.

All hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all.

Crown Him, ye morning stars of light, who fixed this floating ball; now hail the strength of Israel’s might, and crown Him Lord of all.

Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God, Who from His altar call; extol the Stem of Jesse’s Rod, and crown Him Lord of all.

Officiant: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death and giving life to those in the tomb. The Son of Righteousness is gloriously risen, giving light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death.

The Lord will guide our feet into the way of peace, having taken away the sin of the world.

Christ will open the kingdom of heaven to all who believe in His Name, saying, Come, O blessed of My Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you.

Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the Martyrs receive you and bring you into the Holy City, Jerusalem.

at THE GRAVE SITE

THE COMMITTAL:

Minister: Everyone the Father gives to me will come to me; I will never turn away anyone who believes in me. He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give new life to our mortal bodies through His indwelling Spirit. My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope.

You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: “Happy are the dead who die in the faith of Christ! Henceforth,” says the Spirit, “they may rest from their labours, for they take with them the record of their deeds.”

Man born of woman has but a short time to live. Like a flower he blossoms and then withers; like a shadow he flees and never stays.

In the midst of life we are in death; to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord, who are justly angered by our sins?

Lord God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us from the bitter pains of eternal death. You know the secrets of our hearts: In your mercy hear our prayer, forgive us our sins, and at our last hour let us not fall away from you.

In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our sister CONSTANCE; and we commit her body to the ground; to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to earth dust. And we beseech you in your infinite goodness to give us grace to live in your dear love and to die in your favour, that when your well beloved Son shall come again in judgement both this our sister CONSTANCE and we ourselves may be found acceptable in your sight. Grant this for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Minister: Let us pray.

Almighty God, with whom still live the spirits of those who die in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful are in joy and felicity: We give you heartfelt thanks for the good examples of all your servants, who, having finished their course in faith, now find rest and refreshment. May we, with all who have died in the true faith of your holy Name, have perfect fulfillment and bliss in your eternal and everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Minister: Merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Resurrection and the Life: Raise us, we humbly pray, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; that when we depart this life we may rest in him, and at the resurrection receive that blessing which your well-beloved Son shall then pronounce: “Come, you blessed of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world.” Grant this, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer.

All: Amen.

Minister: Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the Spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minister: Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord; All: And let light perpetual shine upon her.

Minister: May she and all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace

All: Amen

Minister: The Lord bless her and keep her, the Lord make His face to shine upon her and be gracious to her, the Lord lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace. All: Amen.

Minister: Alleluia. Christ is risen. All: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Minister: Let us go forth in the name of Christ. All: Thanks be to God.

Minister: Unto Him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy; to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.

HYMN ........................................................................................................................ Abide With Me ( CPWI 7 )

Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see. O Thou, who changest not, abide with me!

I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the Tempter’s power? Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me!

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness. Where is death’s sting? where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes, Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies. Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended, the darkness falls at thy behest; to thee our morning hymns ascended, thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank thee that thy Church, unsleeping while earth rolls onward into light, through all the world her watch is keeping and rests not now by day nor night.

As o’er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking our brethren ‘neath the western sky, and hour by hour fresh lips are making thy wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never, like earth’s proud empires, pass away; thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever, till all thy creatures own thy sway.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now am found Was blind, but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace, my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed

Though many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’ve first begun

Good friendships

are worth more than gold and can help endure with faith through difficult trials.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reads: Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.

I can truly say that I had a friend and confidant in Constance Hanna Gibson. We were young girls entering form one of St. John’s College when we first met, and we fostered a bond that made us inseparable. Our friendship developed over the years into a sisterhood. We took part in each other’s wedding, and, when our children were born, we stood godparents to each other’s children.

We were there for each other with fellowship and a listening ear, through thick and thin, and ups and downs. We loved and cared for each other and our families no matter the day, time, or hour. We shared each other’s joys and pains. Our friendship was one of endless devotion forged out of mutual respect. There is no greater feeling than knowing that your friend has your back.

These last two years were rough for Connie, but she bore them with a smile, determination, and with a strong faith in God. She fought a good fight; she ran her race and now she has gone on to receive her just reward.

We vowed that we would be friends for life, and we kept our word. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

Rest in peace, Connie.

Your forever Friend, JOANN GRAY BOYD

MyConnie,Darling

My heart is broken. You were so much more than a niece to me. You were my second heartstring beside my Clarice, and I loved you like a daughter. Connie, you had a deep faith in God that manifested in every aspect of your life, which was the epitome of love, patience, understanding, compassion, and generosity. You were a devoted and loving daughter to your parents and did all you could for them. You were faithful in taking your Mummy to Friday morning Mass at St. Mary’s for many years, and even during your illness, you helped to take care of your Daddy and answered whenever he called or asked you to cook something special for him.

God saw fit to bring you and Carl together, and you two were made for each other. You shared an unconditional love, and the love you poured into your children was a wonderful example of what a Godly family should be like. Thanks be to God that He allowed you to be here long enough to witness your children achieving their goals and share in their success in their chosen fields—Carla as a behavior analyst and Chelsi as a medical doctor.

Outside of the family, you also gave 100% plus as a member of both the Methodist and Anglican churches, as a Rotarian, and as an auditor of YWCA Bahamas, where you shared your expertise in accounting.

Connie, you will be missed by so many who loved and appreciated you. As your dear cousin Dr. Alys Hanna-Morris in the UK expressed: “Her faith carried her through all she had to endure. I felt the calm acceptance even across these many miles. I feel so grateful to have had her in my life. There will never be anyone like her – not even close.”

Connie, you will live in our hearts forever.

YOUR LOVING AUNTIE ROSIE

To my beloved Aunt

The most God-fearing, down to earth person I’ve ever gotten the privilege of having in my life. I had a connection with you that was like no other. I’ll never forget all the laughs and special moments we had, the errands we ran, and all the long hours we spent together. You would always go above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable while being in your presence. When things were tough in any way, you were a person that I’d never hesitate to talk to. I’d do anything in this world just to hear you say, “Hey Naeya girl!” or “Hey, Naeya, Naeya!” again. I remember the times I’d ask my mother, “May I stay by Aunt Connie this weekend?” And she’d tell me to give you a break, but in contrast, you’d reply with “Naeya is welcomed at anytime!” I miss you so much, more than words could ever explain. Everything I do will forever be in memory of you. I will always be thankful for everything you’ve done for me, big and small. I love you forever. Until we meet again.

Connie! Marie! ConnieConstance!Marie!

My cousin, my sister, my friend, my wannabe mother :-), one of the loves of my life.

Growing up on Anderson Street we had a very beautiful childhood: playing together, Christmases with lots of gifts, dressing up together and alike, sleepovers, watching Aunt Marrie cook and bake, learning how to skate in the basement (that was me and Née lol). I don’t think you ever got the hang. Our Hanna cousins on top of the hill and the Adderley’s just down the hill… so many memories to recall.

Although there are only four years between us, you were somehow like a mother figure too. You combed my hair when it needed to be combed (although you couldn’t part straight), you rowed it down in summertime and would complain, but you loved it anyway, and Mother was much pleased (LOL ‘cause ya know! LOL)

You’ve always been a constant in my life. I can’t recall my first memory of you, but you’ve always been there…trying to protect and guide me through all of my ups and downs and in-betweens.

The teenage years came, and I had to part ways and go to St Anne’s School, while all of you, my cousins, were at Saint John’s College. I was sad, but we were still able to remain close as Gramps would pick me up after school many days and take me in that Morris at 5 miles per hour from Fox Hill to Anderson Street. You would laugh at me, but I took it.

You went to Taylor’s to work, and I went off to university after College of The Bahamas. You never missed any of my special occasions, and my graduation was one. Our trip to London and Paris after will never be forgotten; oh what a grand time you, mummy, and I had!

All of my friends knew the name Connie: Connie, Connie, Connie, Connie. I was always talking about Connie, and if they never met you they surely knew who you were to me. Some became your friends, and some you took over, which was just fine with me. Always so inviting, friendly, warm, kind, and welcoming, you just drew people in.

We were always active; we gave each other a run for our money when it came to squash (and sometimes racquetball, but squash was our game), and I think we may have played some tennis too. Walking the fort after work was also fun for us, always with that quick walk making me walk faster.

At Taylor’s she met Carl, and later on she would tell me how she would meet a flower on her desk every morning placed there by him, but that he wouldn’t speak. Well, eventually they spoke, and time passed, and Carla came along; my baby, and then the wedding came, and I said I’m going to

be the maid of honor. She may have had Joanne in mind, but I made the announcement so...LOL! She was so excited that day, I didn’t even get a picture with her at the house. She wasn’t going to be late for her Carl. I was the one who burst out crying when she stepped inside the church. I was so happy! A beautiful day it was, which turned into a beautiful life of love and partnership.

I watched her pour love into Carla, Chelsi, and Cameron, which manifested greatness in each of them. She was so proud of them.

After Connie retired, we set up our gardening schedule, and later our exercising schedule. Well that went out the window after a few weeks, but it was fun while it lasted. She got busy again.

Always the busy, busy, busy bee (which she loved even while complaining sometimes LOL). Your good auntie Rosie got you into working for the YWCA, and then you had to take care of Carla and Carl’s businesses, but that was just fine. And oh, let’s not forget Rotary. Connie loved people, and people loved her. She would try to get me out, but most of the time, it did not work. I thanked her many times for being my mother’s sidekick because Clarice couldn’t do what she did with my mother; two of a kind when it came to being on the go!

So many things to remember:traveling together, birthday lunches or dinners, family gatherings. We both loved to cook and eat. Connie made a mean okra soup, and so do I. She thought her macaroni was the best, but mine was better. She loved to please people; sometimes, I would go over on a Sunday, and there would be all this cooking going on. The conversation was like: “Girl, what you doing?” “I have to feed mommy and daddy, Uncle Sydney, and Aunt Ella, and Miss Gibson is in town, so I have to take her some food”. “Girl, you good!” And she did this for the longest. Her heart was so big! She would always say you have to give to receive, and you will receive more abundantly by doing so.

Connie, there’s so much more to remember and say. I will never forget that beautiful smile that lit up your face and a room, your caring gestures, your crazy jokes. your sometimes wacky thoughts, our laughter together, your bad driving that had people pressing brakes, your love for life, and your love for me.

Thank you for being my sweet Connie.

I LOVE YOU!

I LOVE YOU!

I LOVE YOU!

CLARICE COOPER

To My Dearest Aunt,

As I sit down to pen this letter to you, I am overcome by emotions. How do I begin to express the depth of my love for you? You were my confidante, advisor, and motivator. I can vividly remember the times I would call to tell you about my day and any decisions that I was about to make, but for some strange reason, I would always have to run it by you first and no matter you always gave sound advice and were never biased. I would literally call you for everything. We spoke every day, and when you didn’t hear from me at a certain time, you would call and say, “Your aunty still living you know,” and from then we would be on the phone for hours.

Your love for me was extended to my daughter Sanaeya. You were selfless towards her, and I admired the bond displayed. On birthdays, you would call and ask, “Where is my girl?” and then proceed to sing your personal rendition of Happy Birthday. That made her day. She loved her Aunt Connie. Whenever I needed assistance, you were always there. You had a heart of pure gold. When I was diagnosed with my medical condition and subsequently hospitalized, upon my discharge, you were there to pick me up and told me, “You are coming by me!” I stayed with you for 3 weeks. Whilst weak and recuperating, I would always joke with you and say, “You need to give me some of this energy.” Your reply would be, “Anya, I am going to keep going until God stops me.” You never turned your back on Sanaeya and I, and I am forever grateful. Even in your trials, you were always positive and kept that beautiful smile. Your presence exemplified peace. My heart is truly broken, and I will miss you dearly. I will conclude with these words taken from the song, “You Raise Me Up”:

“When I am down and oh my soul so weary, When troubles come, and my heart burdened be, Then I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit awhile with me.”

You were my beacon of light in troubled times. I will cherish the memories we shared and continue to make you proud.

I LOVE YOU FOREVER!!!

ANYA

TRIBUTE TO OUR COUSIN

Constance Hanna-Gibson

I am the seventh (last) daughter of the late George and Grace Bullard, so I had no “baby” sisters to play with. Thank God, Cousin Allan and his wife Marinetta had some children, and they lived close by. Their daughters Garnell and Lynn were older, and Allan Jr. and I were around the same age – but you didn’t play with boys back then. Connie and Renee were the two younger girls, but Connie was always mature for her age, so even though I was older than she, we became best cousins. We played together and she always gave instructions on what we should do in her quietly persuasive way.

When I got my driver’s license, I would borrow my sister Linda’s car and pickup Connie and Michelle Hanna for our Sunday afternoon drives. That was the highlight of our Sunday afternoons. We laughed and had so much fun during those drives and most of the time we would go to Howard Johnson’s for ice cream before I dropped them home.

Connie was like a sister to me. She was very generous and would always call just to check up on the family, especially on our son, Tevar. She made many pans of her famous macaroni and pots of okra soup for us over the years for different occasions, and sometimes just because she knew we liked them.

Connie was the organizer of the Butler, Bullard, Hanna, Wilson family reunions. I remember her calling me to ask what I thought about us getting together, and I told her it was an excellent idea, and that’s all she needed. She ran with it and spearheaded the organization of many of our reunions, working with representatives from each family to ensure that all families had a voice in the planning of the events. Our first event was a gala dinner at SuperClub Breezes, which was very well attended and a huge success. After that, we celebrated at family homes on a rotation basis. Through this, Connie started a wonderful fellowship of bonding, and I hope our family will continue with this in her memory because I know it is exactly what she would want.

Connie returned to St. Agnes Church a few years ago, and it was as if she had never left. She joined several ministries and the choir, and she dedicated herself to attending the Tuesday and Thursday morning masses religiously. She made an invaluable contribution to our church in her “Constance quiet way.” In more recent times, after my two surgeries, I would get dropped off at church with the intention of being picked-up after church. However, the very first time Connie saw me at church, she checked with me to make sure that I didn’t drive (she was silently-bossy like that), and from that Sunday, she offered to take me home and every Sunday thereafter, if she was at church. That was sometimes a treat because I’d be able to crash her and her aunt Rosie’s breakfast date, and she refused to let me pay for my breakfast. Connie was very kindhearted!

Connie was a wife with a capital W, and a very protective mother. She LOVED “her” Carl, and she doted on their daughters and son. Connie LOVED her children and did any and everything for them, and they knew it! With that love, came education. Education was very important to Connie. She studied and received her degree as an adult, and she made sure that their children received the very best education. Carla is a very successful businesswoman and is the proprietor of the Renee Oneil Center for Child Development & Research; Chelsi is a Medical Doctor who graduated top in the country from the University of the West Indies, and Cameron is a Master Mariner and Maritime Pilot.

I loved my wonderful cousin, Constance Hanna-Gibson. We will surely miss her, but many fond memories of her will live on in our hearts.

On behalf of my sisters Cheryl, Marilyn, Linda, Mavis, and Marsha, and our families, I extend heartfelt condolences to Carl, Carla, Chelsi, Cameron, and the entire Gibson and Hanna family. May she rest in eternal peace.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away and although we love you dearly we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best
