Skip Day Brisben Joseph’s second novel follows the story of some nerdy high school senior boys who rent an old hearse that’s been for sale by a funeral parlor. They paint it with funny phrases and graffiti decors and drive it in their school’s annual Skip Day parade. But the adventure only begins as “American Graffiti” meets “Animal House” and situations only go deeper.

Marvin's Garden Madge Duckworth’s greatest dream is to marry a man who’s going places. She found that in her husband, Marvin, but later discovered that she married a sadist, glutton, and greedy man. Madge’s life runs on terror-filled inertia with horrible beatings at Marvin’s hands. Then cancer strike her and cost her life. After she dies, her ghost fortunately witnesses Marvin’s comeuppance.

Sweet Lorraine Another novel talks more about an ageless love when a 69-year-old man returns for a high school reunion and falls madly in love with a woman he also fell in love with when he was in third grade. As he pursue her, they seem to found

Welcome E d i t o r ’s N o t e

Going Beyond antasy. Conceit. Illusion. We come to these places when we want to escape from reality. We visit these realms beyond the actual world and explore through the domains of what goes beyond the eye. But sometimes there appears a thin line between the ‘actual’ reality and the reality we wish to believe because our imagination creates what we fail to see in the actual world and the reality of the world is what makes up what the mind creates. At a time when life’s atrocities become too heavy to bear or pain becomes too painful to feel and happiness becomes too good to be true, breaking a thin line is a rewarding escape route where human mind opens a portal of a little world of unrestricted

reality. There, we go beyond ‘what is’. As many would argue, like others would agree, reality and fantasy/fiction are two different dimensions that cannot co-exist. But what if, at some point, it can? We are not making any miracle, but we’re counting on chances and possibilities - ‘what possibly can’. As film industries are thriving to attract audiences within the month’s parade of movies, Paperclips Magazine is also drawn into going beyond the usual and bring in a fresh new taste of reality and fantasy alike. We dared to join together reality, fantasy and illusions in the pages of a single masterpiece. This month’s issue is a product of going to possibilities, of going beyond. We offer a special new look of the magazine that features a great deal of greatest and most anticipated

MAR 2019

Lara Kaye movies of the month: Avengers: Endgame, Game of Thrones and Shazam! to name a few, together with some horror, family drama and comedy flicks to share the limelight. Now, the correlation between reality and fantasy comes with these carefully chosen movies to fit the theme. Ranging from different movie genres, all these are presented in a way that brings the wonders of fantasy in the real events and actual world and depicts the reality of the world in a woven fantasy. Odd, right? These very pages are the impossibilities you might as well think. While we get used to watching fictional movies and TV shows while imagining ‘what if’ they’re real, well, the odds are: they’re events and situations that really happened or they’re product of a visionary that’s actually happened somewhere hidden in the world we exist. However they appear or presented, they all tell a gratifying story. While the Avengers are nearing the endgame now and the fight for throne is now arriving at the final arc, Paperclips Magazine has just begun travelling the path of possibilities that will further the work beyond what we already offered. Enjoy every flip of the pages of our first step in going beyond.

fter dropping the official trailer of Little last January 9, it is clear that we are in for another body-swap film that is in the same vein as 17 Again, 13 Going 30, and Big. owns the world; that everyone else is below her. It is also her belief that her assistant and employees should stick to what they are hired for. In the marketing campaigns for the film, Jordan has been described to have a “take no prisoners” personality. We can take it that she won’t spare anyone - not even kids. This can be proven on the trailer when she pushed a child in front of the elevator as well as how she traded verbal barbs with another, who consequently magically gives her a nightmare she’ll probably learn a lesson from.

April - With an ‘A’ for Available Then there’s the assistant, April (with an ‘A’ for ‘Available’). April is the most frequent receiver of Jordan’s unreasonable demands. Jordan trusts April but she doesn’t spare the latter from snide remarks. Although April is confident that she can do more than just being an assistant, Jordan believes otherwise. She turns down April’s plea to give her a chance as Jordan prefers it if April concentrates on her work as an assistant. Her time to shine comes when her boss receives a “curse” one day. Jordan turns from being the domineering entrepreneur to a snarky teenager. As her limitations confine Jordan into the world of teenagers, she enlists the aid of April to handle a lot of things for her - both in life and in her company.

Think You’re the Boss of Me? Now that Jordan has turned into her 13-year-old self, how she will run her company is not the only problem she and April have to face. In fact, trouble

comes knocking on her front door in the form of child protection services. With the neighbor calling in child welfare on her, she needs to be enrolled in school - else, someone’s going to jail. On the joke side, April shouldn’t have anything to do with that problem; thus, it is only natural to ask exactly who will go to jail, right? Brows raised, we definitely know who it would be.

To solve their immediate problems, April becomes Jordan’s proxy and guardian. No one’s too excited to play this part than April. Who would want to pass on the chance to boss around her tyrannical employer? But who’s going to be the boss of who remains to be seen at the end - err, in the movie. Moreover, would the unreasonable Jordan be compliant enough to go back to school? Of course not! But would a cute hunk of a teacher coax her into it?

Crazy Tidbits Now here’s a crazy tidbit for the movie Little. Did you know that it was the then 13-yearold Marsai Martin who pitched the story to the executive producers? While we were playing house with others at that age, Martin was already doing something amazing. Crazily enough, her idea appealed to the right people and the production journey of Little came to be. Aside from being credited as the person behind the idea of the film, Martin is making rounds online as well for being the youngest executive producer at the age of 14. This came after news of her signing a ‘first-look’ deal with Universal Studios came out. “I am so excited for the magic I’ll be able to create and produce with Universal,” she said in part. “My goal is to show young women and girls that our voices and ideas matter and you are never too young to dream BIG!” While Regina Hall and Marsai Martin share the main role, Issa Rae plays the other lead role, April. Little also stars Justin Hartley, Tone Bell, and Mikey Day. This ‘black girl magic’ film is set to hit theaters this coming April 12, 2019.

earjerker films are one of the few staple genres that cinemas would never turn their back to. After all, not only are the sales for popcorns and soda high during the release dates of great drama movies, tissue sales increase then as well. Kidding aside, drama movies that tug at your heartstrings and squeeze your tear ducts have always been popular choices for moviegoers since time immemorial. If you want to take a break from the latest releases of adrenaline-pumping movies such as Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Shazam!, and Us to name a few, opting for tearjerkers would help you freshen up. Breakthrough A Christian family drama film adapted from the book entitled ‘The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection,’ Breakthrough tells the miraculous true-to-life story of survival of the author’s, Joyce Smith’s, fourteen-year-old son, John. One winter morning, John, who was out with two of his friends, fell into an icy Missouri lake. In a situation where every minute under the cold winter lake would lessen a person’s chance of survival, John was underwater for more or less than 15

minutes before he was saved and delivered to the hospital where he remained unconscious for an hour. The event was like a dark cloud hovering above his family as well as the people who were there to witness the tragedy.

people live. Moreover, she is also one of the most active members of the civil rights fight. With the two coming from the other end of the spectrum, it is not a surprise that their initial encounters always leave a bitter aftertaste.

As a faith-based film, Breakthrough will highlight God’s miracle as witnessed by the author herself. John’s situation back then was already considered as hopeless, something that the medical community will have given up all hope for the fact that the boy has already been submerged under frosty waters for a quarter of an hour. Joyce, though, refused to give up on her son. A devout Christian, Joyce mustered all of her strength and faith to pray for a miracle. Perhaps it was John’s strong will to live or God’s way to answer to Joyce’s sincere prayers, the boy took another breath of air, which subsequently allowed for his treatment, recovery, and eventual discharge from the hospital.

Things started to change when Ellis and Atwater accept the task of co-chairing a two-week community meeting to deal with a court-ordered school desegregation decree. However, will things go easily when these co-chairs are boxed inside bigotry and prejudice? The subsequent events though brought them to form an unlikely friendship when they saw how the rigid power structure of the South actually just exploits its people; it doesn’t matter if you are black or white, everyone are equally disadvantaged compared to those in power.

Breakthrough cast include Marcel Ruiz, Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Dennis Haysbert, Topher Grace, and Mike Colter. 20th Century Fox will release this Christian family drama film, with Stephen Curry sitting on the executive producer’s chair.

The Best of Enemies Adapted from Osha Gray Davidson’s novel entitled ‘The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South,’ The Best of Enemies is set during the 1960s when the issue of race is at its explosive peak. Ellis grew up in one of the poor white sections of town. In addition to that, he is also a member of the Ku Klux Klan. On the other hand, Atwater came from the part of town where poor black

A Jump Scare Parade This April

Hellboy R | April 12, 2019

For the past few months, moviegoers were fed up with action, magic, fun and fantasy adventure. Now, film industries are up to some frightening and eerie peril. From reboots to book adaptations to tales and real life atrocity, all these are lined up to come into life in great terror and horror. To all the horror-hungry souls, April is giving the most of a jumpscare parade. Are you in?

36

ISSUE 58 / paperclipsmagazine.com

No matter how we come into this world, the choices we make are what define who we are. After a decade away from the big screen, Big Red is making a comeback this April. For Guillermo del Toro’s film fans, Neil Marshall is taking over the series for 2019 reboot. With a new director comes a new story to unfold. In terms of tone and style, a darker, more gruesome and more hardened horror territory defines the new version of Hellboy.

Director Marshall and comic creator Mike Mignola promises to spin the material back towards its more horror-inflected roots, walking a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie. The film stars David Harbour as Hellboy, Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio. The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind; more violent, more bloody, without the handcuffs on.

Pet Sematary NR | April 5, 2019 Sometimes dead is better. Stephen King’s horror novel of undead machinations are back thirty years after the original movie adaptation in 1989. Having two directors on the chair, Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, they liken their take to an adaptation of the book rather than a remake of what’s been made more than a decade ago. And this time, it promises more than just campy territories but a version that channels the novel’s ‘absolute dread’. The new Pet Sematary stars Jason Clarke (First Man), Amy Seimetz (Stranger Things), and John Lithgow (Footloose, Shrek).

I A N M C S H A N E A N D D AV I D H A R B O U R ( H E L L B OY )

With eerie thumps of drums and the rising of the undead, with spooks and hiss, it brings about a sort of a look at what happens when you don’t deal with grief.

The Second Hill The Second Hill is a historical/futuristic novel grounded in fact. Written seven years ago, it foresaw today's topsy-turvy world: a place dominated by terrorism, moral decay, the assault on religion, and political upheaval. This serious literary work is intense, action-packed, and thought-provoking. It should be especially attractive to screenwriters, producers, major publishers of fine fiction, and academicians. It will appeal, as well, to the broader audience.

The Griffin Murders The Griffin Murders is a straight murder mystery. Like The Second Hill, it is high-quality literary fiction. The story mirrors the Sherlock Holmes adventures. Its protagonists are Holmes/Watson "clones," who pursue a cunning serial killer in New Orleans. The story ends when they unmask the killer, a prominent, respected New Orleans citizen. This spellbinding story is quite an adventure - a wild ride that will surely appeal to the vast whodunit audience and to the entertainment industry.

The Tate murders remain a horrifying cultural fascination, even nearly 50 years after they occurred. The Haunting of Sharon Tate winds up to be the most controversial movie of 2019 following one of the most horrifying events in history. The film arrives on the 50th anniversary of the Manson murders; and it is just one of the many retrospectives. The film will mine the atrocity of jump scares and edge-of-seat tension, considering the grisly and traumatic real-life story that inspired it. The haunting will reimagine the once heinous event through the eyes of Hilary Duff.

The film is just the first film in a series, with The Haunting of Nicole Brown Simpson to follow.

pectated to be the highest grossing movie in history and a colossal turning point that will thrust the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into a new era... is in the making — the Avengers: Endgame — awaited to hit US theaters this spring. Also known as Avengers 4, Endgame will mark an ending to what will be an 11-year-old, 22-movielong plot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3. Everyone is trying to keep up with the MCU but it seems the Avengers saga itself is one big of a sequel to catch up. So here it is, Avengers: Endgame release date, cast, trailer and everything you need to know. Right here, right now; here in the Storyline.

What is the Endgame? Avengers: Infinity War ended with a BIG SHOCKING BANG. Though literally it was only a “snap”, it decimated half of the universe’s population to dust. Infinity War made some universal catastrophic changes to the MCU status quo that set the stage for everything that will happen in its sequel… the Endgame. The Avengers lost and the universe cured - at least that’s what the movie wants you to think. But it was just half the story and the real thing has just begun. “We are in the endgame now.” The first thing Strange said to Stark right after he surrendered the Time Stone to Thanos. “That thing up there, that’s the endgame.” quoting Tony Stark from Avengers: Age of Ultron

“Endgame” hmm. Seems familiar. Well, it is a technical term in Chess - the final phase of the game where both sides make strategic sacrifices of valuable pieces but they do it to eventually corner their opponent’s king. Thanos, the opponent king in Avenger’s case, is one hell of a job - the universe needs to unite to defeat. Undoing the effects of the “snap” may require more strategic sacrifices than we thought needed. By the way, the “snap” that wiped out half of the universe’s population has an official name - Decimation.

managed to confuse fans and followers about how things will possibly go.

A lot of fans messaged NASA to rescue Tony Stark from space. We find it funny because we also asked Elon Musk to maybe send a Tesla and rescue Stark from the vacuum of space.

Among the many trailers, the one released in Super Bowl 2019, was the most controversial as it sparked debate among fans and even dragged non-fans into the discussion.

And yes, in many ways more than others, Avengers: Endgame stirred discussions and

Here’s a disclaimer: Let’s not forget that this is a Marvel movie and we get excited as anyone else when a new trailer drops, but we also know that not every single aspect of the trailer ends up making it into the final movie. Oftentimes we can see clues on how the movie will eventually turn out by studying the trailers but oftentimes they can be downright misleading.

make sure particular aspects are in place in order for the plan to work. That may include him giving up the Time Stone to Thanos, making sure Ant-man is in the quantum realm and he himself fading to nothing. Doctor Strange is the kind of person who would sacrifice anything to save Earth. In Doctor Strange Movie, he realized that he needs to put humanity before himself. That’s why he trapped himself in a time loop with Dormammu, to be killed by him again and again. He went through all the pain to save Earth. If a person can bear the pain of death countless times, certainly he can sacrifice once more to save the Universe.

Doctor Strange has looked into 14,000,605 possible futures of the coming conflict, but sees only one. Everyone would wish to undo the Decimation which may be deemed as a close to impossible goal unless we insert “Time Travel” or the “Quantum Realm” into the equation. Doctor Strange, having seen millions of futures, had to

He would not have given an Infinity Stone to a mad titan whose plan is to erase half the universe. That explains him giving the Time Stone to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War to save Tony’s life. grand plans. Strange may also need Nebula to use Thanos’ guilt to reckon him. In the comics, Nebula was able to steal Thanos’ gauntlet that leads to Thanos’ defeat. On a parallel yet another aspect, Ant-man must have learned something while being locked in the quantum realm. If you recall, Strange briefly visited the quantum realm on his first magical-mystery tour. Perhaps strange knows that something in the quantum realm can help them in the fight. Maybe you wonder, where is Captain Marvel in all of these fusses? We are sure Brie Larson will be in the movie because she is always the first name in all the official cast lists across the internet. However, the trailers do not give out much information about how Captain Marvel will take part in the story but the producers hinted that new major villains will be introduced in Avengers: Endgame. Most critics and fans think that Captain Marvel will be in the movie but may not play a major role however she will be essential in order to set the plot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4.

Cast and Behind the Set Directed by the Russo brothers Joe and Anthony, Avengers: Endgame is expected to be the highest grossing film for 2019 unless something comes up. The movie is written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and will be starred by Brie Larson, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. etc.. And guess what, a lot of characters are coming back! Controversial as it seems, Gwenyth Paltrow was spotted suited up with an iron suit. While many may think that it was a subtle teaser or a marketing

effort, we think it was a very interesting hint of the plot. Did you know that in the comics, Rescue is the name Pepper Potts goes by when she wears her own Iron Man armor? Tony Stark needs saving or will it be that Pepper will take on Tony’s fight in his absence? Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye will be making a re-entrance taking the character of Ronin, a vile character in the comics. It’s also likely that Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie after missing out on Infinity War as she’s been spotted flying with Chris Hemsworth to Atlanta for reshoots. She later confirmed on Twitter that Valkyrie was in “one piece and thriving” after Thanos’ snap. Don’t expect Tom Hiddleston to reveal whether Loki faked his death (again) as he responded to that theory with “your guess is as good as mine”. As for Josh Brolin, he may be with new sidekicks

but it was promised that he’d be back. Well, of course, who else will be the villain? Hmm. Fishy. Will the Tribunal, Celestials, Adam Warlock be introduced in the movie? Which mystery character would you like to appear?

Brothers confirmed that filming on the movie had wrapped on October 13 and they marked the 100day countdown on Twitter and on Marvel’s official website. Endgame is the final movie for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We’ll have to see the movie to find out more.

Things really kicked off with Iron Man, and the MCU hasn’t looked back since. The Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole has become a sprawling mega beast from another dimension (you can find out how to navigate it precisely here), but it’s divided into distinct sections, with the interconnected stories of its individual heroes building towards a convulsive finale every few years in the form of the Avengers team-up movies.

When is it Happening? The movie will be out on April 26 in the US and has been moved forward one day for a Thursday, April 25 release in the UK which is almost exactly a year after Infinity War. Before that movie, we will be getting Captain Marvel on March 6. The Russo

embrace one’s individuality to the fullest. Conforming to the social norm is still okay, but going beyond one’s comfort zone and discovering what makes one unique is better.

Individuality is the essence of a forward-moving society. It is through people’s individuality that humanity made breakthroughs, discoveries, and inventions beneficial to the improvement of the human race. Through constant progress, it is no longer an issue today to

The trope of a new ideology gaining traction, during a time when people are still holding tightly onto old-fashioned ideologies, is what careened Alan R. Hall into an epic writing journey for his book, The Naked Queen. With individualism at the center of the plot, Alan whirls us away to the world of Arthurian legend. He blended the contemporary concept of people embracing more “rights” and “freedom” than what they were originally granted by society into a Medieval lore set at a time when such an ideology is still at its infancy.

ometimes, all we need is individuality. Individuality in the sense where we can do the things we want without having to force ourselves to comply with the societal norms. Individuality in the sense that we are able to carry out our ambitions, dreams, or goals in a dignified manner, without losing the sense of what makes us unique. That each of us is able to live a life that is true to our own beliefs.

paperclipsmagazine.com / ISSUE 58

77

“I ask thee, Sire, has heard tale of the Naked Queen?”, Prince Darien speaks these words to the future liege of Camelot. Alan’s book, The Naked Queen, gives the titular highlight to Syrenya, a fearless and clever Lady who ascend to the Queen’s throne after successfully completing the depraved First Night ritual that King Ballizar, tormented ruler of Tabithia, has grown quite nefariously attached to. Syrenya was christened as the Naked Queen after shunning the custom of wearing dresses—or clothes of any kind, a practice unheard of in her native country. Syrenya is the perfect example of a character who shines through because of her uniqueness. She does not fear what makes other ladies tremble, as proven during the First Night ritual. Her stubborn beliefs - dyed with postulates not yet universally accepted during her time - may put her at loggerheads with the King and some high personages of the Church. But they bring out her strength as the central figure of the book. Syrenya is thought to be almost magical, but she has no such feelings about herself. She merely continues to live the life she has always lived, despite the fact that the people of Tabithia often call her sorceress, even witch. And it is through her that the wheels of fate have started turning, allowing people to rethink their stances on tradition and societal rules. “It is the tale of Syrenya I have brought thee, and how she did overcome and cease the king’s most wicked sins, and teach him benevolence. But ‘tis a tale that begins most wickedly...”, Prince Darien said when introducing the tale to Arthur.

78

ISSUE 58 / paperclipsmagazine.com

While the book details the heroic battles that Syrenya faces, as well as her tumultuous relationship with the King she has vowed simultaneously to chastise and protect, it is written in the pointof-view of Syrenya’s adopted son and Tabithia’s crown prince, Darien. Like his adoptive mother, Prince Darien is no standard Royal. He grew up under the wing of the Naked Queen, and the eyes of her Ladies-in-Waiting, who were known to be nonconformists. As the narrator of the story, the Prince bears witness to Ballizar’s mortifying rule, as well as Syrenya’s unfathomable adventures, even becoming a participant in some pivotal events. Bringing the Queen’s tale that spans more than 20 years with him, Prince Darien goes on a quest - to be a hero of his own story; to be a brave and stalwart man who believes in himself enough to be that hero - which eventually allowed him to meet Arthur Pendragon, before the latter became the legendary King Arthur. “...it never even occurred to me that I would attempt such a grandiose undertaking…” are Alan’s words that best describes not only Syrenya’s and Prince Darien’s feats but also his writing journey for The Naked Queen. Alan R. Hall has begun writing at the age of 12. Throughout his childhood and university years, he had honed his craft by writing various literary works including letters, essays, short stories, and poetry. With writing as his driving force, Alan eventually found himself able to earn a living with this gift. The Naked Queen is Alan’s first full-length novel. This despite the fact that it was never intended

as such. Initially intended to be a short story, he found that his book has spun its own tale as he continued writing. The characters became even more complex, and their importance to the story grew. The tale became even more intricate, eventually breaking through the confines of a short story or even a novella. “As the plot grew too complicated and ornate to be confined to short story or even novella length, I finally understood that, if I was to be able to tell my story in its entirety, then a full-length novel it would have to be”, Alan says. When asked of his inspiration when writing the book, he revealed that he took inspiration from the numerous books depicting the Arthurian legend. As he intended, the Chivalric Code - constituting the idealized qualities of Medieval knights such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and great gallantry toward women - is fully integrated into the novel. In fact, it became the driving force of this adventure story.

own individuality. Each person has his or her own set of views; it is incumbent on us all that we should learn to respect the views of our fellow human beings. “...a tale that began most wickedly, but the worst has passed. The dark night of evil that was upon the reign of Ballizar was deep, but its passing did bring joy and peace to the kingdom, for it brought to our land Ballizar’s confessor, forgiver, and the gentle wisdom of the mysterious lady who was soon exalted. ‘Tis this vile First Night that brought to Tabithia the Naked Queen.” These gripping words set the tone of Alan R. Hall’s novel. You have an enjoyable read ahead! May the blessing of the Naked Queen shine upon you!

Of course, The Naked Queen doesn’t have Arthurian adventure as its sole theme. When reading through the book, you’ll find an undercurrent of homosexuality. His inclusion of this sub-plot can be attributed to his experiences growing up; he became cognizant of the unfair and often horrible treatment gays have been subjected to, not only in present society, but from the first moment homosexuality became a known quantity. Alan primarily wants the reader to find an adventure tale, as entertaining as all adventure tales should be. In addition to that, he wants to impart the value of going outside one’s own comfort zone, accepting those outside of the norm, and embracing one’s
