Fans of thriller shows are in for a heartbeatraising treat with the latest sadistic thriller from Sony Pictures Entertainment, Escape Room. The movie title may ring a bell to some thriller addicts as there was a movie released back in 2017 with the exact same title and plays the same “escape room” concept. In fact, you may think of the 2019 movie as a reboot at first; but from the trailer, we can gather that this isn’t the case. The 2017 flick was pretty disappointing, considering that it was one of the pioneer films that brought

the “escape room” concept into the big screen. It left the audience feeling bored and not really that invested in the supposed panic-inducing scenes and jump scares. How the puzzles were solved didn’t have that mind-blowing impact that it supposed to have. The film was ‘meh’. Hopefully, the producers of the new Escape Room movie used it as the yardstick and avoid the pitfalls that made the others flop. On a positive note, we may be able to expect much from the 2019 film given that the entertainment company it came from already has a pretty amazing lineup of thrillers such as Searching (John Cho), Don’t Breathe (Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto), and The Equalizer (Denzel Washington).

A 1997 Movie Rip-off? First thing noticeable about Escape Room is that it seems to take inspiration from the Saw movie franchise. Saw basically features a sadistic serial killer who finds pleasure in coercing victims into playing perverse puzzles that lead to death. In Escape Room though, the protagonists are not playing against a person but against their own ingenuity and secrets. Aside from the 2017 movie of the same title, this upcoming movie seems to have a big similarity to the 1997 film entitled Cube. Cube features six strangers thrown inside a single room where they will brave life-and-death situations to escape.
Every time they escape to another similar-looking room, they have to be careful of the deadly boobytraps that waits for them in there. With $360,000 budget (that’s CAD!), Cube made the most out of their set, which is just a single, bare cubic room. Escape Room though, with its estimated budget of $10,000,000, is capable of making the set look more exquisite, thus there should be no problem in setting the stakes high and expecting elaborate puzzles, boobytraps, and props.

The Puzzles Look forward to the puzzles. The “escape room” concept basically requires its participants to find clues within the room, solve the puzzle, and escape. In the movie, the first puzzle that we see is a box sent to the participants which, upon successfully solving it, affords one an entry voucher to Mino’s immersive escape room, promising a milliondollar win. As soon as they are gathered in the escape room, the game starts. Finding a key submerged in a frozen lake, solving a wooden maze before running out of space
Why They Were Chosen One particular mystery in the movie is why they (the six participants) were selected. At first glance, they seem to have nothing to do with each other. One corporate manager, a part-timer, a straightlaced student, a badass lady, and a regular joe what do these people have in common? One clue the trailer gives us? A hospital bed. Just what exactly are the circumstances that got them chosen? Starring Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine, Nik Dodani, and Yorick van Wageningen, Escape Room is your year-starter thriller for 2019.

very now and then, a movie comes along that has remained mostly under the radar until it’s time for the marketing campaign to kick off. And that appears to be exactly what happened with a new fantasy adventure from 20th Century Fox coming in 2019. Releasing its first teaser poster on October, The Kid Who Would Be King looks like a Thor movie with a kid in the lead for some reason. But this movie is actually something more intriguing than that. One big reason to be excited about is Joe Cornish! It’s been seven years of waiting for genre fans whose affections were left in the 2011 inventive

alien invasion thriller, which is wildly fun and witty, Attack the Block. Having seen a teen gang defend their block from an alien invasion, Cornish is now delving more into the fantasy adventure genre with a sword, wizard and enchantress. Finally, after nearly a decade of winning a massive audience affection, the filmmaker returns to the big screen with magic and fun at hand. Joe Cornish dropped his directorial debut with his terrific, sci-fi thriller Attack the Block. The movie earned huge success, but he has yet to get a follow-up project off the ground. He signed on to helm an adaptation of the novel Snow Crash and developed a spy thriller called Section 6. However these projects did not make it on the big screen, as often happens in Hollywood, his

talent continued to flourish having helped pen the wonderfully chill and refreshing Marvel film Ant-Man and toiled behind the script of The Adventures of Tintin. From achieving cult success in television with his long-term cohort Adam Buxton, to working on screenplays for the likes of Edgar Wright and Steven Spielberg, Cornish has excelled at whatever he has turned his hands to. Now, another promising feature from such talent is about to land at the first month of our 2019 movie list. Cornish is back to deliver a rollicking children’s wish-fulfillment adventure. This time around, Cornish appears to be applying the same keen eye to another seemingly played-out film
It’s about nobility and chivalry in the modern world, whether it exists still, and what modern kids would make of it. It’s also a big spectacular, exciting, thrilling action-adventure movie for the whole family
genre: the sword-in-the-stone Arthurian legend. As he did with Attack the Block, Cornish puts a funny and fresh twist on this classic story, setting it in modern-day London and putting the focus on a cadre of whipsmart kids. The Kid Who Would Be King is another stab at transferring Arthurian lore to the playground. Along the way, Cornish’s screenplay keeps up the humor, never forgetting that this new quest is taking place in contemporary times. As you’d name it, it’s basically old-school magic meeting the modern world. “It’s about nobility and chivalry in the modern world, whether it exists still, and what modern kids would make of it. It’s also a big spectacular, exciting, thrilling action-adventure movie for the whole family.” Cornish told Entertainment Weekly. The Kid Who Would Be King revolves around a 12-year-old school boy whose everyday problems are dwarfed by his discovery of the mythical Excalibur. With the most powerful sword in history in the hands of the most powerless schoolboy in Britain, an epic adventure begins as Alex and his friends must thwart a medieval villain who is hellbent on destroying the world. With Cornish behind the camera and script, this new project is rather enticing, and we hope that this movie will carry equally fresh characters and narrative that won’t simply appeal to younger audiences. The film stars Louise Serkis, Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Ferguson. Serkis has the lead role schoolboy Alex, Stewart plays the wizard Merlin while Ferguson plays the villainous Morgana. With such a year refresher, you sure need to keep your feet on track and don’t miss it out as it hit theaters on January 25. Let’s wait and see what Cornish has in store for his long-awaited followup feature.

ver the past decades, the everimproving quality of Hollywood films and movies have greatly caught the audiences’ fascination. However, the success and increasing demand in the film industry is not merely brought by perfected cinematography, stunts, and the movie per se (though it’s the great denominator for most) but more often largely contributed by great actors who left a remarkable act that most people remember at the end of the movie. Releasing a trailer for the upcoming new sci-fi thriller Glass, Universal Studios is bringing us a

power trio of the most prestigious actors of their time, Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson, and James McAvoy, in a single screen this January 18 to give a great year-starter. But before getting too excited on Shyamalan’s another sequel or feeling too much hype for the two-movie (Unbreakable and Split) mashup, take a look first at the great actors behind Elijah Price who calls himself now as Mr. Glass, David Dunn, and Kevin (or Patricia or Dennis or Barry or The Beast, whoever they are) and get to know how they have made a name in Hollywood. If they weren’t on your ‘favorite stars’ list yet, you might want to reconsider. We’re not talking about them personally because we all make a fuss in our own lives, but them as actors
blockbuster it is without Bruce Willis’ influence. For over a decade, he has been a cop or detective; that made us hardly accept him in anything else. Though he does comedy and he’s made a pretty good use of his voice with his hit single, his enormous appeal as every man’s smart ‘action hero’ is the first of his identity. And there’s no Bruce Willis in any of his characters without that famous smirking charisma and talking at the side of his mouth. Then there’s Samuel Jackson - another prominent actor of his time; the undisputed badass of Hollywood. In many of his films, we’ve known him to be loud, aggressive, violent, strong-willed, a bit crazy and tough (it’s hard to imagine a tougher persona than him). These styles of acting have no doubt put him in the wild card. The greater part of Jackson’s success as an actor displays his ability to imbue his vilest characters, spouting the vilest words with a touch of humor, intelligence
and Hollywood stars who left and are still making remarkable traces out of their epic movies. Bruce Willis – that one best action hero of our time, the John “Yippee-ki-yay, motherf**r” McClane. Since his portrayal in Die Hard series, he has appeared in many other films and was widely regarded as an ‘action hero’ who changed the genre by taking the average action movie star and turning them from the typical musclebound, humorless hero into a vulnerable, wisecracking smartass who could blow the enemy away and make at least three good jokes before their body hit the ground. It’s hard to imagine the modern Hollywood action movie being the big, bawdy

To complete the list, here’s a game-changer – James McAvoy. His choice of roles has been increasingly strange. A personality trait that has surely proven handy for his dramatic portfolio had him racing between playing tough and tender, hero and heartbreaker; from foppish love interest to action hero to superhero. There’s just a wide variety in there! There is a noticeable and profound difference between his smiling, romantic lead to the spitting, crying, fighting, screaming lead he’s played now, as well as the quiet sensitivity to his Professor X. But if you have noticed, this man is good in inhabiting characters especially at being gross. There is no sudden weird McAvoy because he’s been weird from the very jump! The yammering, maniacal McAvoy we see in Split is perhaps the McAvoy we met nearly a decade ago in Atonement. He’s gross and he’s proud of it. Now that these power trio are up to an epic standoff within M. Night Shyamalan’s own cinematic universe, let’s see whether we will see their identical acting styles or we’ll have to see new different acting agenda. Whatever there is, one thing is for certain: you don’t want to miss this star-studded lineup that would give your 2019 the welcoming celebration it deserves.

n this day and age, social media has opened a wider world for everyone, especially for millennials. Through the diverse social apps that are made available via smartphones, tablets, and computers, one can instantly connect with friends, family members, and even colleagues anytime they want. Moreover, there are even cases when one gets to know one’s life through social media posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many others. The wide reach of social media is a good thing if one considers the original purpose it was made for to connect to people one cares about. However, the power behind the social media technology has made it easy for negative influence to breach through as well. No matter how much one “child proofs” a phone, there will always be one or two rotten apples that can significantly distort a person’s morality, justice, faith, or righteousness. That is the risk that one has to face when they engage themselves in social media. What makes it sad is that social media could have been a positive influence that hones a person to be better. In terms of spirituality alone, numerous apps and ebooks are available online that one can download to cultivate their spirit. If one is inclined to do so, it is even possible to download the Holy Scripture.

While it may be disheartening to realize how social media has deviated from what it was expected to become from the start, there is one thing to appreciate with it: it taught us the contemporary concept of “FaceTime”. The term “FaceTime” is popular with iPhone users as it is a well-used app that people use to talk to their family and friends at no cost. Through “FaceTime”, people can easily chat with those important to them vis-à-vis even when they are miles apart. When they are sick, worried, or lonely, they can “FaceTime” whoever they want and they’ll feel better right after. Just like that, how would it be if the one we “FaceTime” is Jesus? That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. —Romans 10:9 A “FaceTime” session with Jesus unequivocably provides an image that one can follow for spiritual growth. As one is able to perceive the Lord’s image, it is easier to fully appreciate the Lord’s thoughts, intentions, and disposition. Through “FaceTime” with Jesus, one will have an opportunity to envision what He wants them to do in life, whether it be to move forward or to be an instrument in some other person’s life. Facing Jesus can imprint God’s awe-inspiring image and ordinance, which then feeds one’s desire for spiritual enlightenment and development. To add to that, just like with the original modern “FaceTime” that bridges people closer to each other, the concept of “FaceTime” with Jesus is to develop an intimate relationship with God. Talking with God about one’s future plans, worries, encounters, and expectations can help cultivate one’s faith. God will then help one prevail over

After a nearly 15-year wait, Pixar’s beloved superhero comedy The Incredibles has received a sequel that wasted no time to climb the list. For any movie not rated PG-13, Incredibles 2 just broke a box office record. It is now the biggest grossing movie in North American box office history that is rated either G, PG, R, NC-17 or X. This recordbreaking opening for animation only confirms that Pixar is an unstoppable sequel machine.

Deadpool 2 When it comes to comedy sequels, Deadpool 2 is already in a league of its own. Though it didn’t quite match the domestic debut of the first film, it’s making more overseas than its predecessor. The sequel debuted to millions overseas, ahead of the first film and is the biggest international launch in history for an R-rated flick. Domestically, the two Deadpool pics represent Fox’s biggest box-office openings ever.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Dinosaurs may be extinct, but their power to draw crowds is stronger than ever. Before the new franchise recently took hold, the Jurassic Park films always performed well at the box office, so it’s not a big surprise that it inherited this streak with the Jurassic World movies. This sequel landed as one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, Universal’s second biggest debut ever coming only behind Jurassic World, and the second biggest opening of the entire franchise.

Mission: Impossible Fallout Critical adoration and box office success for Tom Cruise! It was an unlikely 22-year phenomenon of the franchise that shows no signs of tiring, thus becoming Hollywood’s most reliable franchise. This sixth installment of the Mission Impossible series is the highest grossing film among all its installments and definitely raced a high gross worldwide.

Ralph Breaks the Internet sets the record in North American thanksgiving box office topping as the highest grossing thanksgiving weekend box office in just five days. The film ended up with the secondbiggest thanksgiving debut of all time only ranks behind fellow Disney feature, Frozen.
Venom Venom has just taken the crown for one particular subgenre of superhero cinema. Sony’s superhero blockbuster is taking a big bite as the highest- grossing superhero origin movie of all time. While many had their share of doubts about the potential success of the movie’s solo being not connected to Spider-Man, those doubts were unfounded as Venom blew past the record for biggest October opening of all time.
