Definition of a Hero

"I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people" (Maya Angelou). Growing up, everyone was once taught that the 'heroes' were the ones who brandished a cape. But that as it may, true heroes are also everyday people. These heroes take on a different role, as instead of flying, and battling the evil, they endure hardships, and face struggles. However, like the heroes we've originally learned, these people are those who are selfless, and refuse to back down. Our heroes strive for the best in everyone, and everything, without thinking of the reward and outcomes. With strong determination and perseverance, true heroes have the will to help others despite the risks, and work toward the greater good without the crave of becoming rewarded.

Accompanied by strong determination and perseverance, heroes are able to achieve success in their doings. Heroism is finding a resolution to a situation, without the hesitation of giving up. Ahero perseveres instead of accepting failure, and learns from the challenges that they endure in order to become a stronger individual. However, to be determined, a hero must come into terms with the difficulties and challenges blocking them from their goal. What makes someone a hero? Is it the way they look, the way they walk, or what they wear? A hero isn't any of those. A hero is a simple person who when faced with difficult choices, makes a difference with their decision. He/She leads by example, has moral courage, and makes good decisions which they act on immediately. Being a hero means that you don't do things for fame or money, you do it because I feel it is the right thing to do. Many heroes rely on their gut instincts to be a hero, doing what might be hard in a tough time. For example, Miep Gies is a well known woman she was a main factor for the reason Anne Frank's diary was published and their survival for a couple years. Otto Frank pleaded for Ms. Gies's help, she knew that she would regret saying no so she accepted. Miep took in the Franks and did all that she could to help them through the rough times. Miep could have easily said no and taken off the burden of taking care of a family but she said yes because heroes don't back down from challenges and they don't waver when asked for help. Someone else who did a great cause was the 16th president of the United States of America,Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln was one of the best presidents in US history, he was the president who finally abolished slavery not for his own sake but to upkeep the liberty and freedom present in the US. Abraham did this because he is a hero and heroes don't ever back down from something they can change. Merriam Webster dictionary defines heroism simply as great courage. Bravery, honesty, valor, character, gutsy and bold are all words that basically mean the same as heroism. The definition of a hero is a person, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. People in everyday life show these qualities and can be found in many places. A teacher can be thought of as ahero by students, a mother by a child, a coach by players, or a world leader by citizens. Some people like to think of sports figures and celebrities as heroes. Firefighters, police, doctors and members of the military are great examples of people who exhibit great heroism every day. Heroes can be found anywhere throughout the country. They can be found in government, hospitals and importantly the ones keeping our country safe. This paper will focus on heroism and attempt to show how a hero can be anyone who exhibits actions that are above and beyond the norm; they could be cops, firefighters, parents, teachers, athletes or even celebrities.
