How to Save a Life

I remember when I was 11 years old and my dog, Happy, was sick with cancer. Since the moment we rescued Happy he was the sweetest, most energetic pet I had ever seen. He remained this way over the many years that we had him, hence, his name. I remember the day we decided it was time to let go. We took Happy to the veterinarian clinic and were taken into a little room. All four of us, my brother, my parents, and I, huddled around Happy as he was lying on the counter. The veterinarian gave us some time to spend with him alone and say our goodbyes. In my opinion, this is a terrible issue. These animals are dying because of this with no fault of their own. If the overpopulation in shelters continues we will not have a place to put all of these animals except for in the ground. A shelter is supposed to be used as a safe place for lost, homeless pets, but it is being abused and turned into a trashcan due to the overpopulation. Some may argue that there are "no kill" shelters, and although that is true to some extent, it is not entirely true. The sad truth is that "in most cases even when a shelter calls themselves a 'no–kill' shelter it simply means they give the dogs they don't want to a shelter that IS a kill shelter" (Maguire). Overpopulation is costing animals their lives. Do you know what else overpopulation is costing? Us. It costs the United States taxpayers $2 billion a year "to impound, shelter, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals" ("Animal Overpopulation"). These statistics are hard to take in, but they are very real and this is why I think something needs to change.

So why is this happening? There are many things that can contribute to the massive amount of animals entering shelters every year. Some of the reasons for overpopulation can be giving up problematic or even old, sick pets, and continuing to over–produce pets through breeding and the lack of neutering or spaying. Lastly, they want us as humans to stop polluting and begin using more natural resources. The panda symbolizes just one of the animals that they are trying to protect and not let the world harm. Reasons To Save Wildlife

As an avid hunter and sportsman, I see the purpose in saving and protecting our wildlife. Wildlife includes more than just animals it is the wilderness and the plants that also makeup is wildlife also. These are some of the reasons I believe why we should save the wildlife. first the essential role wildlife plays in the world, second is the way humans all over the world use wildlife as a source of income and food, and, finally, how poaching takes away from the hunters. One reason is that animals play an essential role in the world. Hunting and fishing are some of the most common types of recreation. There are other types of recreation such as hiking, riding bikes, bird watching, camping, photography, and boating, however these recreations have a lesser impact on wildlife. To help the out you canplant trees and bushes in your yard to give them a place to live, you can also put a birdbath in your yard for a source of water to the birds that are around your house, this also keeps them off the ground and away from their predators. Another way you could help them, is to feed them, by putting up bird feeders around your house, you will be feeding them, it also allows you to be able to watch them from the comfort of your house it brings the beauty of nature right to your front door. If you manage your land, and the animals, on it the better quality of the animals you will harvest. You can do this by managing your land, cutting mature timber for your profit, replanting replant it, and plant green fields for the deer and turkey to eat during hard winters. Be selective harvesting the animals you take do not take every deer that comes out, and only shoot the biggest the oldest ones. This helps manage the deer population this dose not apply just for deer it also applies to all types of animals you may harvest. It is important to keep track of an animals population in order to make sure that the negative side affects do not occur. Unlike in North America, most of these animals roam completely free in an almost totally undeveloped environment.
