Culture Of The Philippines Essay

THE HISTORY AND STABILITY OF THE PHILIPPINES "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people (Ghandi, Mahatma 2017). For about the first time this lush land was discovered, the Filipinos have always been proud of their culture, their religion, customs and beliefs. A part of their culture is transmitted through their various languages, material objects, rituals, institution, and art from one generation to the next. They, like any other country had its ups and downs with things they're not so proud of like their stability financially and with their government. But despite that, the Philippines have more to offer than just their land and what the land has to offer other countries for they literally are still fighting their own wars within themselves and the country is still going through turmoil then and now. In 1521, a Portuguese explorer named Ferdinand Magellan was discovering lands for Spain and came across a body of islands which stretched across the seas, which became known as the Philippines; officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Lambert, Tim). Since Magellan was working in Spain at that time, He was able to claim the island for Spain. But a few months later, Magellan was killed during a tribal warfare against the Lapu–Lapu's Army on the Mactan Island. Because of that, the Spaniard did not gain a base in the Philippines until Miguel Lopez de Legazpi led an expedition and built a fort in Cebu which later opened up the Spaniards to

In the province of Pampanga, the procession includes devotees who self–flagellate and sometimes even themselves nailed to crosses as expressions of penance. All through the week, you can observe lines of people beating their backs with nailed balls, carrying the cross, and crawling all the way to the church just as Jesus supposedly had done. After three o'clock in the afternoon of Good Friday (the time at which Jesus is traditionally believed to have died), noise is discouraged, bathing is proscribed and the faithful are urged to keep a solemn and prayerful disposition through Black Saturday. Under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty the Republic of the Philippines and theUnited States became treaty allies. Both nations share strategic interests, with that the Philippines rely on the U.S. for its outer security. However in 1991, their senate revoked the U.S.'sMilitary Base Agreement with the Philippines. Even with the revocation joint military training still continued.

Former Philippine President Fidel Ramos temporarily invited the U.S. back in response to China's production of structures on the Mischief Reef. The Aquino government is currently evaluating the Military Base Agreement, but there is no expectation to any changes to the agreement. During the War on Terror in Southeast Asia the Philippines became an important hub for the United States. This led to the signing of an agreement between President Arroyo and the U.S. allowing them to use the Philippines as a supply base for military operations. With the terrorist attacks in the U.S. concern of Al Qaeda's ties around the world became a concern. Cultural Identity In The Philippines

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Philippines is a heterogenous country. Many Filipino were confused about the real culture or native culture of the Philippines because of much foreign or alien culture that invaded the Philippines right now. But as a matter of fact Filipino is also the reason on having a confusing cultural identity as a nation. The Philippines is a country that has been colonized too many times. From the Spaniards, then we were sold off to the USA, and then we were invaded by the Japanese– we were tortured, raped, ransacked, and more. But yet , we still admire them after all. Actually, we aspire to be them. Women everywhere are trying to get their own white complexion. Whenever you see the word "imported", we instantly think that...show more content...

The cultural centre is often a meeting point in small communities where people come together to preserve traditions and develop cultural activities that include the participation of the whole family. As a general rule, the activities of the cultural centres are free or very affordable, so that nobody be dismissed for economic reasons. It is generally non–profit institution. Cultural Centres play an important role in representing cultural heritage by preserving objects and related information by providing access to these through exhibitions, public programs, publications, and research resources. Objects bear witness to history and play a significant role in the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of cultural heritage and identity.

The Philippine Culture Delfred V. Torres 13B3 ALC CLASS 002–18

The Philippine Culture Culture is the feature and information of a particular group of people, incorporating language, cuisine, religion, music and art and social habits. Culture is learned, shared, takes time to develop, being transmitted across generations, it is subject to change, and it cannot be isolated (Farooq, 2001). Culture is shared among a group of persons usually living in the same society, the region they live in, terrestrial environments around them, their countries past, belief system, the value of people and heritage. Being common to a group, all these aspects develop a sense of unity and belonging among people of that group. Culture is learned, and it is not passed biologically from older generation to new generation. Members of culture share certain principles which shape their lives, and it also spread through generations which adopt customs and practices as part of their culture. Language, literature and art form passed down from group to group (Farooq, 2001). Culture undergoes slow changes. As time pass, some beliefs change, certain rites and custom are abolished, habit and language shift as well as their culture. Globalization and migration led to a mixture of cultures. As different people come together, they influence each other and each other religion, and this contributes to the growth of new learning. Over a period, some cultures are dropped because their

The Spanish And The Filipino Culture Essay

Almost five centuries ago, a voyage in search of gold and glory instead became a discovery of an astounding archipelago consisting of over 7,000 islands. This historically diverse archipelago was named the Philippines in honor of King Philip II of Spain. A majority of the Filipino history is accounted for by the three hundred and fifty years these islands were placed in the hands of the Spanish. To this day the Spanish presence could be seen through the Filipino customs, cultural norms, and traditions. Although the Spanish left a great mark on the Filipino culture, it is among other nations that the Filipino culture was subjected to. Out of the 48 nations in Asia, the Philippines is one of the only nations that is predominantly Christian. Almost 86% of the nation is Roman Catholic. The Spanish money system is still seen in the Filipino currency of pesos. The Spanish language accounts for 20% of the language and Spanish last names have been adopted by a majority of the nation. The history between the Spanish and the Filipinos is undeniable. The Spanish contributed to many of the foods adopted by the Filipino diet. They also introduced them to the usage of utensils. The Spanish are recognized as the main or sometimes the only contributors to the Filipino's history of development. But there is a large part of the Filipino history, before the Spanish rule, that has been neglected. The Filipino history can be traced back to 900 A.D. through archeological findings and

The Filipino Culture And Health Care

Introduction A disparity can be defined as a difference, an inequality, a discrepancy, a gap, or an inconsistency. Within individual cultures, there are health disparities, or specific differences of a population in the existence of health outcomes, disease, health care access, and value of health care services existing across ethnic and racial groups. Disparities can stand for ineffectiveness within the system of health care and thus accounting for unnecessary costs. (Douglas and Paquiao, 2010) The Filipino culture has numerous factors leading to insufficient access to care and reduced quality of care, some of them being cultural habits concerning diet, language, and screening rates, as well as behavioral and mental health. Every culture has its own traditional beliefs and values amongst which can be shared transculturally to better international health whereas there are also those that are influenced by the Filipino culture that can be seen as non beneficial to future generations.

(Douglas and Paquiao, 2010) Despite Filipino's having higher rates of education, leading to better salaries, and having children who are educated, various health disparities exist. The root of the Filipino culture's health disparities lies within their dietary intake. The Filipino culture is world renown for the exotic, intense flavors of their

Filipinos are the second largest Asian group in the United States. In the past data has been hard to obtain about Filipino Americans, primarily because of inconsistences in coding race and ethnicity in research projects. Demographics of Filipino Americans did not start being properly recorded until the early twentieth century, when the Filipino Islands became part of theUnited States territory. Even with the limited data, they have gathered enough information on the Filipino culture. Filipino Americanbeliefs differ drastically from that of Americans, such as their culture, health rituals and religious practices that may make healthcare more difficult (Dela Cruz, 2010).

Studies of the Filipino American health practices show that Filipinos who reside in a rural area are more knowledgeable in home remedies, super natural ailments, traditional healing techniques, where those from urban areas rely more on WesternMedicine and over the counter drugs. In both settings, indigenous folk and western medicine is used simultaneously. A popular self–medication among these groups is Chinese hot/cold application system (Pasma), and Chinese oils which sometimes perceived as a remedy to all ailments such as headaches, dizziness, relaxing, or the common cold. If home remedies do not work, many seek a local healer who uses treatments which includes roots and herbs.

The Philippines: The Culture Of The Philippines

The Culture of The Philippines The Philippines is a very diverse and unique culture. Throughout recorded history, Filipinos have embraced many different cultures to form their own. No other Nation on the planet, other than the United States, can rival the Philippines' melting pot of different ethnic backgrounds, its rich culture, and languages. Derived from hundreds of years and many nations this comes to show that culture no matter who, what, why, where culture will always influence the ideas, developing and characteristics of a group of people. The islands were slowly introduced to a broad mix of different cultures through the migration of other people from many different places. The Spanish colonization of the Philippines began after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi landed in the Philippines, consolidating Spanish power. Manila was designated as the capital in 1572 (Baringer, Sally 2013). Only the areas in the extreme north and south were not governed by the Spanish directly. With the outbreak of World War 2, the Japanese conquered the islands and attempted to press their ways upon the Filipinos. After the United States liberated the Philippines in 1944, the tiny island nation resumed plans for independence. The Chinese have had a significant influence on the islands as well, one example being the integrating of noodles into the everyday diet of most Filipinos. The American influence is by far the greatest. The United States has always considered the Philippines as a protectorate. Sports, language, and food have all been moved from the United States to the Philippines and given a slight, Filipino twist. The constant presence of the United States has been attributed to the military bases and training exercises conducted jointly by both armed forces to build readiness in the region (Stockinger, Johann,

RELATIONSHIPS AND RESPECT

The Filipino culture is less group–oriented in comparison to other Asian countries. Younger Filipinos recognize individuality but still strives to conform to group norms to maintain harmony. Most Filipinos emphasize the importance of establishing lasting and trustworthy relationships prior to the actual negotiation process and agreement. Typically, Filipinos only do business with people they like and this involves getting to know some personal details (non–intrusive) from the other party that shows their values. Harmony is business is prized by Filipinos. This entails ensuring that productivity is achieved with cooperation and commitment. Business details should only be discussed once they have become comfortable with the relationship between parties. These relationships are based off the values of respect and personal trust, thus prolonging the process of negotiation. Business relationships in the Philippines are established between people and not between the companies. So, if another associate of the same company comes in, the process will have to be repeated unless it is a blood relative. Third party introductions are considered a good foundation for establishing relationships because part of the trust is being transferred. Networking and social contacts are very important and built upon solid commitments and reciprocated obligations. For example, Debts MUST be paid – no exceptions or all appointments must be kept. If they don't know what to do and no options in a situation, most probably, that's the point wherein the Filipinos says "bahala na". The other one is the "Maya na" habit. It is an attitude wherein they will do the things later or tomorrow that should be done right now. And the last one is the "Ningas Kugon" habit. It is a manner of doing things good at first only, as it goes along it is getting worse. this habit is expressed in the phrase "Sa una lang magaling." The Philippines is a country deeply rooted in culture. The Army defines culture as a "dynamic social system" containing the values, beliefs, behaviors, and the norms of a "specific group, organization or society or other collectively" learned, shared, internalized, and changeable by all members of the society (FM 3–24 COUNTERINSURGENCY, 2006). Filipino Cultural Assessment

In a profession such as nursing, being aware of diverse cultural practices can help individuals provide the best care possible. According to Larry Purnell, there are twelve domains pertaining to culture that can define how unconsciously or consciously we are either competent or incompetent. These domains include heritage, communication, family roles, workforce, bicultural ecology, high–risk behaviors, nutrition, pregnancy and childbearing, death rituals, spirituality, health care practice, and health care practitioners. To expand my knowledge on these domains pertaining to Filipino culture, I interviewed Joseph A. His mother emigrated to the United States over 25 years ago from the Philippines, and has ensured that their family stays true to many Filipino traditions, including speaking their native language of Tagalog at home.

Family Roles and Organization

In Filipino culture, family is the most important thing to them and everything is centered on family. In his household, his mother does the cooking, cleaning, and sets the rules for the children. Joseph and his brother do all the heavy lifting, errands, and driving in the family. Overall, children are expected to do all that is asked of them, and work hard in school to ultimately attend college. Children and adolescents are typically put on a pedestal and are spoiled with love and affection, because they are the new generation. Correspondingly, children are viewed more as equal status and

Importance Of Culture In The Philippines

The Philippines is a vibrant nation full of life and color but what makes the Philippines stand out above the rest is the culture that defines it. In Kim Zimmerman's article "What is Culture," she defines culture as "characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts." (Zimmerman, 2017) Although the Philippines has a large variety of cultural norms and values, the most prominent aspects of their culture are the country's spoken language, religious beliefs, foods, social habits, and the arts. The multiple languages and dialects spoken in the country is the clear form of communication and the best way to be involved into a country's culture. Religion is a strong characteristic to be a part of in any country. Religious views use faith and beliefs to create a spiritually, strong bond within people. The type of cuisine made and eaten in a country is significant because it represents the traditions of the culture by maintaining the authenticity of the foods they eat. Social habits create a standard for the way norms and issues are taken care of in everyday life. The arts bring out the creativity and imagination a country's culture has to offer. A country's culture is much more the distinctions between other nations. It is a gateway to the heart and soul of the people and the Philippines demonstrates just how powerful culture can be for their nation as well as the rest of the world. The Republic of the Philippines is one of the most popular countries in the Pacific Asia. The Philippines is a country made of many beautiful islands and vacation hot spots that attract many tourists. Filipinos are known for their positive attitudes and hospitable characteristics. They are known for a huge variety of food in which many people travel the globe to visit. They have many popular attractions like the perfect cone shaped Mayon Volcano, the underground reef of Palawan and the amazing beaches of Boracay and El Nido. The Philippines has about 70 to 80 different dialects with Tagalog, Cebuano, and Ilocano being the most popular dialects (Culture of the Philippines, 2017). English is also spoken in the Philippines.
