Welcome to our new pupils‌‌ Jeremy, Wasif, Christian and Kairaav.

Our Mathathon total has grown with small amounts of sponsorship money still coming in most days. The total stands at just over $13,000 and we are delighted with all of the efforts of the pupils and families involved with this fundraiser. What a wonderful achievement! Pupils who have raised the most sponsorship are now being identified and the first class who has returned and had all sponsorship forms accounted for will also be recognised.

The Interschool Rippa Rugby tournament was held this week at Aorere Park and all school teams performed very well. In the final result two of our three teams were placed: A team placed 3rd, and C team placed 2nd.

The next sporting event is the inter schools Cross Country on the 13th September at Hayman

Park and all pupils selected are training hard for this.

Thank you to all of the staff who are involved in training and supporting all of the pupils to be ready for these events.

There is an air of mixed anticipation within the Year 6 students!!! What is happening??

They have worked very hard on their dancing and etiquette that is expected for this very special night. Thank you to the Year 6 teaching team and other staff members for their work organising this event and to everyone who attends and supports the pupils on the night.

The Government has announced a proposal to dramatically change the way schools are funded. Principals and Boards of Trustees would have to make trade offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face. Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to: 1.

fewer teachers and larger class sizes

2.

Less job security for teachers

3.

Lower quality teaching

4.

Fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff

5.

More complex financial worm for Boards of Trustees

The Government’s current funding review is a once in a generation opportunity to better fund education. NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from year 1 to year 13 across NZ. They have asked all members at our school to attend this meeting in Manukau to hear more about the proposal and help determine the education sectors response.

The meetings are paid union meetings, which means Papatoetoe East School will have to close on Friday 16 Sept 2016 at 1.00pm to enable teaching staff to attend this meeting starting at 1.30pm.

Pupils will be expected to leave school at 1.00pm and if necessary, parents will be able to pick up their children from school or pupils will walk home as normal.

LEARNING ASSISTANT PROJECT 40 WEEKS FIXED TERM EMPLOYMENT 15 - 17 HOURS PER WEEK commencing 17 October 2016 Positive Futures Plus Ltd and five local schools are able to offer 12 Learning Assistant positions for people currently receiving Sole Parent support from Work and Income. Learning Assistant positions are available at Holy Cross, Papatoetoe East, Papatoetoe South, Papatoetoe West and Puhinui schools. The work is during normal school hours.

The positions are for a 40 school week, fixed term period commencing Monday 17th October 2016 until Friday 29 September 2017. This project is partially funded by Work and Income through the MSD Flexi Wage in the Community project. At the end of the project all successful applicants will be assisted into ongoing employment. There is no guarantee that the teacher aide positions will continue after the end of the project. During employment all Learning Assistants will be supported towards gaining their Level 4, NZQA Certificate of Teacher Aiding. The study course is provided at no cost to you, however you will need to be prepared to commit to 5 hours per week unpaid study in your own time.

Successful applicants will be required to work with teachers and students in a classroom environment to assist students with literacy and numeracy skills, prepare teaching resources and other duties as requested by the school. A job description and training will be provided by each school. The rate of pay will be $15.68 per hour.

The successful applicants will work 15 hours per week in schools commencing 17 October 2016. Study commences in February 2017 and successful applicants will work 15 hours per week in class plus two hours paid study time.

Additional one to one support will be provided for successful applicants as required to support the study programme.

All successful applicants will be required to complete a satisfactory police vet and be available for interviews on Monday 12th September – Tuesday 13th September 2016.

If you are interested in applying for a Learning Assistant position, we encourage you to attend one of the information meetings which will be held at each school. You are welcome to attend whichever meeting suits you regardless of which school/schools you are available to work in. Application packs can also be collected from each school office.
