arabo Maloka is an 18-yearold who has a deep passion for empowering young girls. While she is a first-year student pursuing her studies in Interior Design at CPUT, she still makes time to give back to her community. Apart from being a student, Karabo is a model and a finalist for Teen Universe SA. “The Miss Teen Universe South Africa 2022 is a pageant, but it is more than that. It is a platform that will enable me to use my voice to empower and inspire young girls. I am most passionate about young girls and young people. I strongly to start an NPO, Karabo Foundation, believe that we are the future of dedicated to tackling issues young our country and that we need to girls face in townships. she does not want girls to miss out on their education. “No girl should be missing school because of their period,” states Karabo. With her NPO, she firmly believes that she can impact the
lives of young girls and keep them in school. Her theme is ‘Your Dreams Are Valid,’ which she also wants to instill in young girls, to empower them and help them reach their full potential. Karabo hopes that The Karabo M Foundation will reach other provinces and partner with other NGOs in the long run. “I have adopted Kanana Primary School because I had seen the amount of potential the young people have. I want to inspire them to work hard and understand that their present circumstances do not determine their future. I believe that young people can make better life decisions, and that is why I have Adopted the Kanana Primary School,” says Karabo. What distinguishes the Karabo M Foundation from NGO is Karabo

It will enable me to fulfill my duty and dream of helping others to reach their full capabilities.” One of the difficulties that Karabo has faced is that she currently doesn’t have any sponsorship or donors. Lack of products and financial resources make fulfilling her dream challenging. But she is not deterred by that. “I am looking forward to working and partnering with various sponsors who will help with the different projects and campaigns I will be doing in the future. I am confident that partnering with other NPO’s will be a great advantage and will also help me help young girls and young people reach their dreams,” she concludes.
Bertharry English Private School – the ever rising star by Harris Frank Mtamathumba
B
ertharry English Private School, situated in the heart of Tembisa, Temong section, continues to stand out as an epitome of academic success, excellence and diligence. From a very humble beginning of only three (3) learners in 1991, the institution’s legendary story is an inspiration, not only to its students, but also to the whole community in and around it, to aim high in everything that one endeavours to do. It has proven that disciplined hard work and dedication, coupled with clear values and principles, really do pay. Under the directorship of the cofounding siblings, Bertha and Harry Kumwenda, BEPS, as the school is fondly referred to by its students, is a household name that has undoubtedly become synonymous with excellence. For almost a decade now, the school’s Matric results have continuously and constantly been hovering at an average of 98% pass rate, with numerous Distinctions across the subjects offered at the
institution. An average of 75% of the students who sit for their Matric exams at BEPS acquire a Bachelor Exemption requirement for University admission. The success story does not end with the Matric classes only. From grade RR to grade 11, both learners and educators are highly challenged and motivated to be nothing but the best; to lead the way and let others follow. Hence the overall pass rate in these grades does not fall anywhere below 85%. This is because all educators, supported by all the other non-teaching staff, cordially work together for the good of the learners and the institution. “We are unique,” proudly says the Director, Harry Kumwenda, “not only because of the excellent results that we obtain at the end of every academic year, but also because of the moral values and principles that we instil in our learners, values that remain as the guiding light for them even long after they have left the school. Our focus is character building.” Says Kumwenda. A multi-award-winning institution,
Bertharry English Private School is committed not only to the academic welfare and aspirations of its learners. The school’s mission is also to create and provide its learners with a conducive infrastructural and moral environment, a very safe and secure place, one that allows them to excel both academically and socially (sports, leadership, service, and culture). The school is committed to developing its it’s learners holistically: intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially. Driven by the founders’ beliefs and convictions, the school’s four pillars (academic, religious, social and physical aspects) are meant to encourage critical thinking, risk taking, responsibility for one’s actions, personal integrity, ethical awareness, respect for diversity and individual leadership. At the same time, the school recognises its profound role, position and changes particularly in technology and globalisation.
