Η κυρία Χρύσα Αρβανίτη πέρασε με επιτυχία τις εξετάσεις για το ECDL στις θεματικές ενότητες: Windows, Word, Excel, InternetOutlook, Powerpoint.

On November 7, 2007 our school had the pleasure of having Athena Parusudis present one of her fabulous teacher training workshops to our elementary levels teachers. As usual, Athena did a sterling job at inspiring and motivating us!

On January 17, 2008, Mrs M. Papaeliou and Ms I. Panayotou attended a VIP event during the Pearson Longman International Conference.

Our colleagues had the chance to meet all the Pearson Longman staff and exchange ideas on books and materials.

On February 20, 2008, Ms Ino Panayotou attended this seminar which aimed to introduce the new ECPE Speaking Test, which will be effective with the June 2009 administration of the test. The presenters, India Plough and Natalie Chen, explained the development of the new speaking part and presented the key revisions that have been implemented. This very informative seminar also provided an overview of the new scoring rubric that will be used.

Το Σάββατο 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2008 οι κυρίες Αρβανίτη Χρύσα, Κοτοπούλη Αλέκα, Λεμονή Στέλλα, και Πατέρα Λίνα παρακολούθησαν στο Ξενοδοχείο Park ενημέρωση γύρω από τις εξετάσεις Εdexcel.

Η κυρία Χρύσα Αρβανίτη παρακολούθησε τους κύκλους μαθημάτων “Methodology I” και “Methodology II” στο Κέντρο Εκπαίδευσης Καθηγητών της Ελληνοαμερικάνικης Ένωσης. Ο κάθε κύκλος διαρκεί 30 ώρες και εξετάζει τις σύγχρονες τάσεις και τεχνικές στη διδασκαλία της Αγγλικής Γλώσσας σε θεωρητικό αλλά και πρακτικό επίπεδο.

On March 5, 2008 our colleagues, A. Stephanides, K. Zagorianos, D. Synefia, J. Roussou, K. Vassilakou, O. Souti, V. Hionopoulou, A. Ramantani, M. Paradisopoulou, A. Dourgoutian, E. Dourgoutian, and I. Panayotou attended a seminar by Olha Mandylus. This in-school event offered our junior and elementary level teachers a full range of exciting and effective teacher training workshops on language skills and games. The presenter, Olha Madylus, is a teacher trainer for the British Council and a Cambrdige ESOL CELTA trainer. In a nutshell, Olha presented a variety of activities that could make our lessons more enjoyable but also instructive. Teachers were encouraged to use gestures, actions and pictures to demonstrate meaning.

In addition, Olha encouraged to do constant revision of new language and to expose our students to the target language as an integral part of our teacher talk.

Ms Janet Wilson attended the Tesol MM/ CALL SIG meeting which took place in November 2007.

Την Παρασκευή 21 Μαρτίου 2008, η Burlington Books οργάνωσε σεμινάριο με τίτλο «Ψυχοσυναιθηματική Κατάσταση του μαθητή και γνωστική εξέλιξη. Αντιμετώπιση προβληματικής συμπεριφοράς στην τάξη.» Ομιλήτρια ήταν η Δρ. Ε. Λιβανίου. Οι συνάδελφοι μας, Κ. Ζαγοριανός και Ι. Παναγιώτου που παραβρέθηκαν στο σεμινάριο έμειναν πολύ ευχαριστημένοι γιατί είχαν την ευκαιρία να ενημερωθούν για τις καινούριες τάσεις στην εκπαιδευτική ψυχολογία, όπως τα concepts ‘working memory’ και ‘mind mapping’.

The TESOL Greece annual convention was held on 15th & 16th March, 2008 at the Hellenic American Union. The theme of this year’s convention was ‘Inspired Teachers, Motivated Learners’.

The convention was greatly organized with plenty of interesting speeches and a comprehensive book exhibition. One of the plenary speakers, though, stood out of the crowd! It was ‘THE’ Stephen Krashen - one of the most prominent theorists of second language acquisition and second language learning. S. Krashen, a polyglot himself, is a truly inspirational speaker. Some of our teachers who attended his lecture, V. Hionopoulou, N. Hadzigianaki, I. Panayotou, D. Synefia, S. Lemoni, and J. Wilson agreed that listening to Krashen is a life-time experience. Ο κύριος Αριστείδης Παναγιώτου παρακολούθησε κύκλους σεμιναρίων ψυχολογίας με τίτλους: «Το σύνδρομο της Στοκχόλμης», «Αυτοκαταστροφικές τάσεις, και «Μηχανισμοί Άμυνας του Εγώ» που οργανώθηκαν από το School of Continuing Education του Deree College.

Η κυρία Κατερίνα Θεοδωράκη παρακολούθησε σεμινάριο που οργάνωσαν οι εκδόσεις Burlington με θέμα “Dynamic Vocabulary Teaching” στις 27 Μαρτίου 2007.

Τον Απρίλιο 2008, η κυρία Κατερίνα Θεοδωράκη παρακολούθησε σεμινάριο που οργάνωσαν οι εκδόσεις Longman.

Ms Dora Synefia will attend a series of seminars organized by Hillside Press during late March and April. a. Presentations and Representations in the Social Classroom. The workshops are about tutoring, peer tutoring and inclusion, Psychological approaches to problems and non-problems, and Drama improvisation techniques and games – a teacher’s tool. b. Pen & Play. Innovative workshops exploring the art of creative writing and drama. The Creative Writing sessions will explore automatic writing, poetry and spoken-word poetry, alongside excellent drama sessions which will give participants the skills to bring words to life, bring energy to learning, and take on techniques such as forum theatre, improvisation and role-play.

Ms Janet Wilson will participate in the CES Summer Schools from July 9th till 3rd August 2008 in London, teaching 8-16 year old children.

TEACHERS’ ARTICLES The Interpersonal Teacher ‘Once upon a time, there were three little brown fish. While they were swimming one day, they bumped into a magic colour fish. The magician looked at the first little fish and exclaimed ‘Yuck! Brown is not the colour, the colour to be; brown is not the colour, the colour to see. Tell me what colour you really really want to be!’ The first little fish thought and said ‘Red is the colour, the colour to be, red is the colour the colour for me.’ The magician fish changed its colour to red. Then, it looked at the second little fish and exclaimed ‘Yuck! Brown is not the colour, the colour to be; brown is not the colour, the colour to see. Tell me what colour you really really want to be!’ The second little fish thought and said ‘Pink is the colour, the colour to be, pink is the colour the colour for me.’ Finally, it looked at the third little fish and exclaimed ‘Yuck! Brown is not the colour, the colour to be, brown is not the colour, the colour to see. Tell me what colour you really really want to be!’ However, the third little fish said ‘No, brown is the colour, the colour to be, brown is the colour the colour for me.’ So, it didn’t change its colour. One day, a shark appeared. It looked at the red little fish and said ‘I can see you, so I can catch you!’ The red little fish shrieked ‘Aaaargh!’ and hid behind the pink little fish. The shark looked at the pink little fish and said ‘I can see you, so I can catch you!’ The pink little fish shrieked ‘Aaaargh!’ and hid together with the red little fish behind the brown little fish. The shark couldn’t see them any more.’

With this little story, Mr. Cliff Parry opened his inspiring seminar speech on ‘The Interpersonal Teacher’ in the TESOL Convention on 15 March 2008. He explained that the moral of this story was ‘Be yourself’. No University degrees, certificates or technology make somebody a Teacher.

Being yourself in the classroom is the most important element and we tend to forget it. Often, the text takes over and we as teachers are redundant. In order to avoid this, there are 4 steps we need to follow: 1.Be visual: The one who looks like a teacher is the one who is physically present in the lesson and attracts attention. 2. Be communicative: The interpersonal teacher interacts all the time and carries the message to his students. He knows that if students remember him, they will in turn remember what he tries to tell them. 3: Be musical: The quality and a tone of a teacher’s voice should always change to what he is talking about. The interpersonal teacher imitates different sounds to make his students understand language. 4: Be emotional: The interpersonal teacher understands that learning takes place when students feel safe and secure. He encourages students to interact with each other and ask and answer questions without fear. As teachers, we are privileged because we work on human souls. By being ourselves, we can shape everybody!

La conférence de Mme Emi Livaniou était une expérience unique étant donné que les connaissances acquises sont toutes applicables en classe.

Pour les raisons précédentes, nous considérons la rédaction de cet article comme indispensable, à l’édition du magazine annuel de l’école.

Ces dernières années, nous observons de plus en plus une difficulté de la part des élèves de se concentrer et de suivre le cours. Ici, le rôle du professeur paraît d’une importance définitive. C’est lui qui doit suivre en même temps les différentes situations produites en classe. Vu qu’il connait bien son cours, il ne doit pas perdre son objectif, en surveil-
