Help families in need this Christmas Between the 4 and 16 December, community members are invited to donate new and unwrapped items (toys, books or non-perishable food) at the Visitors Centre. The donated goods will be distributed

by Vinnies Victoria to families in need this Christmas.

GET READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN 2024 COUNCIL ELECTIONS CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP GRADUATES We are delighted to congratulate the 29 local leaders who have successfully graduated from the City of Casey’s 2023 Community Leadership Program.

Next year the City of Casey will return to elected Councillors when local Council Elections take place across Victoria in October 2024.

Casey has been governed by a Panel of Administrators for the past few years since the dismissal of all Casey Councillors in February 2020 by the State Government.

Over the next 12 months, Council will undertake a range of measures and support the efforts of the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to ensure a successful transition back to elected officials for the community and our organisation.

Key dates: October – December 2023: VEC Electoral Structure Review of Casey (On 24 January 2024 the final report will be provided to Minister for Local Government) February – March 2024: City of Casey Role of Council Candidate Information Sessions June – September 2024: Council Election candidate nomination process through VEC October 2024: Council Election (exact date to be confirmed) October 2024: New City of Casey Councillors inducted

Role of Council Candidate Information Sessions To support community members who might be considering running for Council, Casey is hosting Role of Council Candidate Information Sessions over the coming months.

The sessions are designed to give community leaders and residents the chance to find out more about the diverse range of functions and services local government provides, the role of Councillors and to provide the resources required for potential candidates for the election.

The program provides emerging and existing community leaders in Casey with free training to help build leadership skills and learn about community engagement and local government.

The graduates and their families celebrated their achievements and were presented with their certificates at a ceremony held at Bunjil Place.

The ceremony also provided the opportunity to hear the graduates speak about their experience with the program and their visions for the future of Casey.

We wish our graduates the best of luck as they continue to engage in community life throughout Casey.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff encourages anyone interested in taking an active role in shaping their community to attend the sessions. “Casey is seeking individuals from diverse backgrounds, with various skill sets and experiences, to step forward and take part in the electoral process.”

New pavilion at Booring Recreation Reserve, Botanic Ridge.

TOP SCORING UPGRADES TO SUPPORT CASEY’S SPORTING CLUBS Council recently celebrated the completion of two major sporting projects, a brand new recreation reserve and multi-use pavilion at Botanic Ridge and the redeveloped cricket pavilion at Casey Fields.

The newly constructed Booring Recreation Reserve at Botanic Ridge is home to various Casey sporting clubs including Devon Meadows Junior Football Club, Devon Meadows Football Netball Club and Devon Meadows Cricket Club.

The refurbished players and spectators pavilion now includes female friendly player change rooms, medical and first aid facilities, a media space, indoor training facilities and a dedicated office space for its various users including Casey South Melbourne Cricket Club.

The facility is equipped with two australian rules football/ cricket ovals, two netball courts, cricket training nets, a playground, public art, shared paths, a multi-use pavilion with players change rooms, amenities areas, storerooms, community space and an undercover spectator area.

The $15.1 million project was funded mostly by Council with a contribution from the State Government via Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Works have transformed the facility to be better equipped to host local and premium level cricket including Melbourne Stars training and WBBL matches.

The project was supported by a $3.12 million investment from Council and $1.35 million from the Victorian Government’s Community Cricket Program.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION WITH CASEY’S BUSINESS AWARDS The City of Casey is thrilled to announce the winners of the Casey Business Awards 2023.

Each year Council’s Business Awards recognise and celebrate businesses who contribute significantly to the local economy and serve as shining examples of what can be achieved through innovation, resilience and unwavering commitment to the community.

Recovery In Mind Occupational Therapy was a dual winner in this year’s awards, taking home the Health and Wellbeing award and the coveted Casey Business of the Year award.

The Narre Warren-based business is a holistic occupational therapy service dedicated to empowering adults living with mental illness. The judges recognised founder Bianca Parsons’ journey from a sole trader to employing five staff in just four years as truly commendable.

Each category award winner received a cash prize of $1,000, with the City of Casey Business of the Year receiving an additional $2,000 in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

Surfing, camping, hiking or perhaps taking a day trip? If you are planning to enjoy Victoria over summer, make sure your plans include being bushfire ready and safe when you travel.

With heatwaves becoming a regular feature of the Victorian summer, it’s important to plan ahead and consider how you can look after yourself and others when the extreme heat hits.

• Check Fire Danger Ratings for your journey and destination and make sure you've packed an emergency kit for your car.

• Drink plenty of water, schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising.

• Monitor local conditions and follow official warnings and advice. Listen to local ABC radio, download the VicEmergency app, bookmark emergency.vic.gov.au and save the VicEmergency hotline (1800 226 226) into your mobile phone.

• If you have to go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.

BUSHFIRE SAFETY AT HOME It’s important to plan and prepare for bushfires near your home. Did you know the most common way houses catch fire is from embers? Embers are burning pieces of bark, leaves or twigs that can get into small spaces and start a new fire.

Prepare your property by cleaning gutters, having a well-maintained garden and keeping your grass cut to less than 10cm.

THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA Grass pollen season brings an increase in asthma and hay fever. During the season, which runs from 1 October to 31 December, a high grass pollen count and a certain type of thunderstorm can also trigger thunderstorm asthma.

For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.

EXPANDED MOWING CONTRACTS Following a review of our mowing services model, Council has awarded seven new mowing contracts to help maintain our parks and open spaces across Casey.

This contract expansion will help us deliver a more effective mowing service for our community and address the backlog of grass growth through the spring months.

REMINDER TO KEEP BATTERIES OUT OF YOUR BINS Did you know that batteries are made up of toxic substances and can pose risks to you, your property and the people who empty your bins.
