This inaugural tour eventually led to the founding of the family business we have today.

A couple years later, when my brother was looking for a way to pay his mortgage, I said, why don’t you do a haunted history tour of Madison? He really built American Ghost Walks into the successful company it is today. When it was time, we both quit our jobs and now our tour company is in seven states and Puerto Rico.

UW’S most popular MAJORS : Student Demand, Workforce Trends Drive Enrollment Gains Higher education is constantly evolving to reflect the changing interests of students and specialized needs of employers. At UW–Madison, the majors with the greatest enrollment growth are a good barometer of the university’s responsiveness to these trends.

“Student demand plays a major role,” says Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs John Karl Scholz. “But it is also the case that the leadership, staff and faculty of the schools and colleges are constantly revising curriculum to improve and adapt.”

The undergraduate majors adding the most students from fall 2018 to fall 2022 are: No. 1: Data Science (+914 since inception in 2019) “Our world increasingly depends on data and computing to produce knowledge and to make decisions, and we have seen an intense demand from students for these skills,” says Yazhen Wang, professor and chair of the Department of Statistics. Both Data Science and Computer Sciences reside in the School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences (CDIS), formed in 2019 to combine existing programs in statistics, computer sciences and the iSchool with new offerings in emerging fields.

No. 2: Computer Sciences (+642) “We are proud to not only have one of the fastest growing majors, but also the largest,” said Computer Sciences Department Chair Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau. “The key is to ensure a positive experience for every student looking to gain the skills need to succeed in the digital age. To do so, we’ve redeveloped our entry level courses and hired more teaching faculty, advisors and staff.”

No. 3: Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies (+410 over the previous Retailing and Consumer Behavior major) “Today’s students are seeking not only lucrative jobs, but also work they find meaningful and fulfilling,” says Annette McDaniel, associate dean for undergraduate education and innovation in the School of Human Ecology. “Our program is attracting students who want to positively influence global commerce and technology from

a people-first perspective, blending business, analytics and technology with creativity and empathy.”

No. 4: Psychology (+363) “Psychologists are in demand as mental health continues to be a concern worldwide. But Psychology is an incredibly versatile major, offering our students the skills needed to flourish in a variety of careers from health care to law, business, teaching, conservation and so much more,” says says Allyson Bennett, psychology professor and chair of the psychology department.

No. 5: Global Health (+357 since inception in 2019) Housed in the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences, the Global Health major spans bioscience and public health as they intersect with climate change, food systems, disease ecology and other issues. “There’s an emphasis on empathy, cultural awareness and humility, and on collaborative efforts to improve health at the population level — across the ocean or in our own backyard,” says Entomology Professor Susan Paskewitz, who helped develop the major.

Rounding out the top 10 majors in enrollment growth since 2018 are: No. 6: Mechanical Engineering (+316) No. 7: Health Promotion and Health Equity (+240) No. 8: Business: Supply Chain Management (+219) No. 9: Computer Engineering (+163) No. 10: Personal Finance (+162) Of course, the number of students is not the only way to view which majors are trending upward. There are smaller programs, ranging from Legal Studies to Wildlife Ecology, that are surging in percentage terms relative to their size. But for this ranking, we’re going with actual “headcount enrollment.”

Scholz credits the deans and academic advisers in UW–Madison’s schools and colleges with keeping the university’s offerings relevant and responsive. “They do this,” he says, “through constant engagement with students, networking across higher education and through connections with alumni, external advisory boards and employers.”

GHOST<< page 3 of different areas of the country. We don’t just tell any ghost stories; we tell ghost stories that are connected with the history and the heritage of a place and the people that called that place home.

For example, Kennebunkport, Maine, is one of the tours that we resurrected for this season. I had such a fascinating time delving into its history. There are a lot of writers that used to summer there, like Booth Tarkington. He wrote a book called “The Magnificent Ambersons,” which was directed as a film by Orson Welles. But the fascinating thing about him that people, even locals, don’t recognize is that he grew up in spiritualism and had many extraordinary experiences with the spirits.

That’s an example of the kind of subject matter we focus on. We don’t want to just give the history and then the ghost stories separately. We can bring about some greater understanding of not only the local people, but of historical movements, like the spiritualist movement. I think that’s important because, for example, the spiritualist movement was a big proponent of abolition and women’s rights. A lot of people don’t realize how ahead of their time spiritualists really were. Of course, we’re interested in modern day manifestations of these things as well. But I think people need to understand the history first.

What goes into creating a successful tour?

(It’s) important to walk the route that you’re thinking of, because many of our haunted history tours are walking tours. When you’re doing a walking tour, it’s challenging because the tour can only be about a mile. You want it to be a nice, relaxed stroll that takes people past several locations, looping it if possible so it will take them back to the beginning. So, it’s challenging to find enough stories that connect in a one-mile radius.

(As for writing a tour script,) there’s a lot of archival research, a lot of looking at old newspapers. Certainly, actually visiting the place is very important, and talking to people at the local library and the historical societies there. Not all of the interesting stuff is online. I look over documents to find a narrative that will connect stories.

How do you find haunted places to feature on your tours? Is it simply a matter of asking the locals, “Where are your ghosts?”

Well, that can be a challenge, because certainly there are lots of people that turn you away and look at you askance for even suggesting such a thing. But going door to door is part of the process. What I like to do is look into historical sites and haunt-

ings that come up in old newspaper articles and other documents, and then you can walk around and talk to people in that area. So I am digging things out of history, then seeing if they’re still relevant. A lot of times they are.

What do you say to the skeptics who don’t believe in ghosts or hauntings?

In many ways, ghost stories are a sacred thing to people. I mean, it’s fun, don’t get me wrong! I know, during the Halloween holiday especially, people like to joke about ghosts, but to lots of people, experiences with the departed or other entities in the spirit world have sacredness. That shouldn’t be overlooked.

In our society at large, we’re taught not to believe in these things, and that science has the answer for everything. Science is great. My dad was a high school science teacher. Science is very much something that’s important to me as well. But there are things beyond science that many people have experienced. And in this society, there’s not really a way to learn about these things. Our haunted history tours are one way people can reconnect with the spiritual types of learning.

You’ve got a successful haunted historical tour company and Halloween is coming up. We can’t end this interview without a good Milwaukee ghost story.

My favorite story from our Third Ward Tour is about Clair Richardson, who was the founder of the Skylight Theatre. He died in 1980, but he was a very popular and larger-than-life personality. Clair Richardson is actually still there at the theater. His ashes are anyway, and many people believe his spirit is still there. And they’ve seen evidence of that, to their chagrin, on many occasions.

After he died, it was his intention that his (ashes) be put under the stage of the Skylight Theatre. … It was Clair Richardson’s wish that any questionable decisions that his successors made were over his dead body! If you go to the trap room, they actually have a little shrine to Clair where his ashes are kept and there’s some memorabilia and photos of him down there. Under the stage, they have a lot of little rituals that they perform. One of them is that they have this spotlight that shines on his urn and his photo, and it’s never supposed to be allowed to go out. You know where the story is going.

(A few months after his death) during a live performance, the stage lights were going crazy. The techs were backstage and they couldn’t figure out what was causing the problems. The stage manager descended to the trap room and checked Clair’s light. He found that it had burned out. Upon replacing it, all the problems on stage ceased. This series of events has actually repeated itself over the years. Because of that, before each and every performance the stage manager must check Clair’s light.

This is actually on the stage manager’s checklist! Clair’s light must shine before the show can go on.

For example, if you know you emotionally eat at 8pm, either eat something healthy at 7:45pm to eliminate the 8pm binge or take yourself far away from food and engage in a more healthy behavior such as going for an evening stroll, journaling, or talking to a loved one.

Minor changes are also easier to maintain in the long run, which is key to managing weight. And successfully making these small changes may lead them to more significant changes in their life.

Change Your Comfort Foods Enjoying food is a primal desire for all human beings. However, you don’t have to eliminate your favorite foods and treats to keep winter weight gain low. Instead, experiment by substituting foods with higher quality ingredients to upgrade the health value of your favorite comfort foods by including more whole-food, low-sugar, and healthy ingredients. Piling up debt during your college years is alarmingly easy. Credit card issuers often employ persuasive marketing techniques to get students to open accounts.

Once students have credit cards in hand, the temptation is so great that many end up graduating with not only a diploma, but significant consumer debt.

That doesn’t mean college students should shun credit cards completely, reports the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Used properly, credit cards can be beneficial in establishing a credit history and in providing aid in emergency situations. And, believe it or not, it’s often easier to get a credit card while you’re still a student. That’s because credit card companies know that once you’ve graduated, Mom and Dad are less likely to come to your aid if you can’t meet the payments.

Here’s what CPAs say college students need to know about credit cards.

There’s little reason for a college student to have more than one credit card. In fact, having too many credit cards can work against you when it comes time to buy a car or rent an apartment. That’s because some lenders may be reluctant to extend additional credit to you out of fear that you’ll run up balances on all your open credit cards and be unable to meet the payments.

Credit card interest rates and terms vary widely. Look for a card with a low interest rate and no annual fee. To avoid interest charges, you’ll want a card with a grace period of at least 25 days. A grace period lets you avoid finance charges by paying your balance in full before the due date. And be sure to read the fine print covering fees for late payments, exceeding your credit limit, cash advances, and overseas transactions.

Some credit cards have low introductory rates that jump sharply after three or six months. On other offers, lower introductory rates apply only to balances you transfer from another credit card. And beware -- some credit card issuers will raise your rate if you’re late on a payment.

Except when absolutely necessary, you should never charge more than you will be able to pay back when the bill arrives. Before charging a purchase, think it through. If you are not able to afford the purchase now, chances are you won’t be able to afford it in a month when the credit card bill arrives.

A low credit line limits the amount of credit you have access to and helps to remove the temptation to overspend. Should you receive a congratulatory letter raising your credit limit, call the credit card issuer and decline the offer.

Many card issuers impose both finance charges and transaction fees for cash advances. Unlike charge purchases, interest on a cash advance is normally charged from the transaction date and the cash advance fee may be as high as 2.5 percent of the amount taken. . Don’t give your account number out over the Internet or elsewhere unless you initiated the transaction. Keep separate from your card a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, and the phone numbers for each issuer. Contact them immediately if your credit card is lost or stolen. Be sure that you open credit card bills promptly and check for unauthorized transactions or billing errors. If you see fraudulent activity, notify your issuer immediately.

CPAs suggest that you check your credit report at least once a year to be sure it is accurate. What’s in your credit report can determine whether you can get a car loan, rent an apartment, or even get hired for a job.

Set of Bobbleheads Celebrates The 16th Birthday Of UWM Mascot Pounce

By John Schumacher Just in time for Pounce’s Sweet 16 birthday, a new set of six bobbleheads has been released paying tribute to the UWM mascot.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum on Tuesday unveiled four officially licensed, limited-edition Milwaukee Panthers fight song bobbleheads and two Milwaukee Panthers vintage bobbleheads.

The fight song bobbleheads show Pounce in four different UWM basketball jerseys. Each plays the school fight song at the push of a button.

The vintage bobbleheads depict earlier versions of UWM’s panther mascot. The first panther mascot, later dubbed Victor E. Panther, made its debut in the 1960s.

That mascot represented UWM until October 2007, when a redesigned and renamed panther made its debut as Pounce.

Pounce’s birthday will be celebrated from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the UWM Student Union Ballroom East. The party will continue at 7 p.m. at the Klotsche Center, when the men’s basketball team will have its annual Black & Gold scrimmage. Free food will be available for UWM students at the scrimmage, and fans will have a chance to win one of the new Pounce bobbleheads.

The bobbleheads are available for purchase through the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s online store and at the museum, located in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. A selection of bobbleheads will also be available at the team store in the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

UWM grads Phil Sklar and Brad Novak founded the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014, and the museum moved to its current location in 2019.

“We’ve produced thousands of bobbleheads since founding the museum nearly 10 years ago, but these are among the most special to us, given our connection to UWM,” Novak said in a news release. “Our college bobbleheads are available from coast to coast, and the Milwaukee Panthers are our new favorites.”
