Heritage grant will keep bringing people back to the Beemunnel By SHARON BONTHUYS Walking on Country at the Beemunnel Reserve Aboriginal Place east of Warren will become much easier in the not-too-distant future when a heritage project to pave existing gravel pathways around the highly significant Cultural site is completed. Warren Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) will complete the Giru Ngurra (Warm Home) project with a grant of $80,000 from the 202527 NSW Heritage Grants Program and also contribute its own funds, said senior project officer Fleur Magick Dennis. The 20-hectare Beemunnel Reserve was historically home to many Aboriginal families last century, who lived at the site in gunyas (homes) they themselves made, gave birth to and raised their children there, and worked in the Warren region. In more recent years, the site has celebrated Wayilwan Culture at important events like NAIDOC and many cultural gatherings. It also honoured the history of the site with the development of a guided heritage pedestrian pathway around the site, supported by interpretive signage at locations where

all weather and to people of all abilities. The Giru Ngurra (Warm Home) project is derived from the concept of “visitation” and its important connection to

Wayilwan Culture, Fleur said. “For our sacred places to be culturally and spiritually safe, we need to visit them,” she explained. “It’s part of our Cultural be-

lief system that we keep [these places] warm by that visitation. And we need to spiritually upkeep special places in our Country by being on Country with our special places.” “By upgrading the trail, this allows the Elders to continue that visitation for as long as possible, because they’ll be able to more easily get around the site,” Fleur said. “It was originally built as a gravel trail, and it’s hard to maintain that as gravel gets overgrown with weeds. “We are going to asphalt the path, which will also help improve access for those with a disability, or the elderly with their scooters, wheelchairs or walking frames, and mums with prams,” she added. The project is expected to be completed by the end of June, 2027. The Warren Star toured the Beemunnel earlier this month, escorted by Uncle George Riley, who was born at the reserve in 1941. “I think it’s terrific,” Uncle George said of the Giru Ngurra project to pave the pedestrian pathway.
