Are you ready for the ‘Hot Chicken Run’?

By SHARON BONTHUYS Over the past decade, Councils across NSW have absorbed a staggering $11.3 billion forced upon them by state and federal governments in the process known as “cost-shifting”, according to a new report commissioned by peak body Local Government NSW (LGNSW). Councils have been complaining about this for a while now, particularly the impact on smaller rural, regional and remote councils, something the Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA) has been very vocal about. The wider impact of local government having to cover responsibilities forced on to the sector by the two higher tiers of government for infrastructure, services and regulatory functions without sufficient supporting funding to deliver them has been revealed in the report by independent consultants Morrison Low. Warren bowls enthusiasts are getting ready for the Chicken Run. How about you? PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

By SHARON BONTHUYS With the football season drawing to an end, there’ll be another sport to try your hand at locally as the dust settles. It involves hand/eye coordination, the ability to be flexible, and, of course, a little bit of luck thrown into the mix as well. And you’re not playing for sheep stations at the end of the day, but rather, hot chooks. Yes, dear readers, the Chicken Run is about to hit Warren.

Organised by local bowler and community volunteer Dale Ward, the Chicken Run aims to bring people together for a social afternoon of lawn bowls down at the local bowling green on Saturday afternoons. “We’re just looking to fi ll the gap in the lull left by the football fi nishing,” Dale said. “We’ll only be playing 14 ends using three bowls each, and it will take about two hours,” he added. The Chicken Run aims to

encourage adults and teens aged 17 or older out of their houses and down to the golf club, where the bowling green is located, for some social connection and a cracking afternoon of fun. The bar will be open and kiddliwinks might enjoy time in the play area while parents and carers do their darndest to win the day’s play. Their enticement? The winning team each Saturday will take home delicious hot

chooks, fresh from the Warren IGA. Everyone loves a hot chook and Dale hopes it will be the perfect inducement to draw local residents to the club and support their local community organisations. But Dale doesn’t take complete credit for the idea. “The hardware store bloke said to me, ‘Wardy, years ago, we used to play for bloody frozen chooks around there at the old club. And we used to fill the green up,’” Dale explained. Dale hopes hot chooks might be more appealing, especially as we battle our way through another cold winter. Hot chooks are also a great dinner option for those not wanting to cook. A little luck on the green and hardy bowlers could be taking home their Saturday night meal. “All I want is people to come and play bowls, so the facility is not just sitting there,” he said. The really egg-cellent Chicken Run kicks off on Saturday, July 26, from 2.00pm. Look out for notifications on social media as the start date edges closer, and full details are in the attached advertisement in our Sport section on page 11.
