Obstetrics Myths Debunked: What You Really Need to Know About

Pregnancy and Childbirth

DR AISHWARYA R

MBBS

MS( OG) ,MRCOG, FMAS ,FRM

Currently working as a gynecologist at cloudnine hospital, Tnagar ( shifting to Dubai shortly)

Myth 1: "You can’t exercise during pregnancy.”

The Truth: Unless your doctor advises otherwise, exercise during pregnancy is not only safe but beneficial. Regular physical activity can help reduce common pregnancy discomforts like back pain, swelling, and fatigue. It can also improve circulation, mood, and sleep while preparing your body for labor. Activities like walking, swimming, yoga, and prenatal pilates are great choices. Always check with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or pregnancy complications.

Myth 2: "Pregnant women should eat for two.”

The Truth: While it’s true that your body needs extra nutrients during pregnancy, you do not need to double your calorie intake. On average, you only need about 300 extra calories a day in the second and third trimesters roughly the equivalent of a small snack, like an apple with peanut butter. Focus on eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, and avoid overindulging in empty-calorie foods. Overeating can lead to excessive weight gain and increase the risk of complications like gestational diabetes.

Myth 3: "You must avoid all caffeine during pregnancy."

The Truth:While it’s true that high amounts of caffeine can be harmful during pregnancy, moderate consumption is generally considered safe. Most experts agree that having up to 200 milligrams of caffeine a day (about one 12-ounce cup of coffee) is not associated with any increased risk of miscarriage or birth defects. Excessive caffeine intake, however, can lead to dehydration, increased heart rate, and potentially affect fetal development, so it's best to keep it within the recommended limits

Myth 4: "You’ll definitely get stretch marks."

**The Truth:** While stretch marks are common, they are not guaranteed for every pregnant woman. Stretch marks occur when the skin stretches rapidly, usually due to rapid weight gain or hormonal changes. Some women may be more prone to stretch marks based on genetics, while others may not get them at all. Keeping your skin moisturized and maintaining a healthy weight gain during pregnancy can help minimize their appearance, though there’s no surefire way to prevent them completely

Myth 5: "A large baby means an easier labor."

The Truth:The size of your baby does not directly determine how easy or difficult your labor will be. Some smaller babies may be harder to deliver, while larger babies can sometimes be born without complications. Factors like the baby’s position, the strength of your contractions, your pelvic anatomy, and the overall progress of labor play a much more significant role. What’s more important is that you receive the proper medical support and care during labor to ensure a safe delivery, regardless of the baby’s size

Myth 6: "If you’re having a girl, you’ll carry high; if it’s a boy, you’ll carry low."

**The Truth:** The way you carry your baby is determined by many factors, including your body type, the position of the baby, and the number of pregnancies you’ve had, rather than the baby’s sex. Some women may carry higher or lower in different pregnancies, regardless of whether they’re having a boy or a girl The myth likely comes from old wives' tales, but modern science has shown that there’s no link between the baby’s sex and the way you carry.

Myth 7: "A C-section is easier and safer than vaginal delivery."

**The Truth:** While a C-section (cesarean section) is sometimes necessary for the health of the mother or baby, it is a major surgery that carries risks, including infection, blood loss, and longer recovery times In contrast, vaginal deliveries, when uncomplicated, typically allow for quicker recovery, less risk of infection, and a shorter hospital stay. Both C-sections and vaginal births come with their own set of potential risks and benefits, and the safest option depends on the individual circumstances. Always discuss your birth plan and delivery options with your doctor.

Myth 8: "Inducing labor will always make birth quicker."

The Truth:Inducing labor is sometimes necessary for medical reasons, such as when there are concerns about the baby’s health or if the pregnancy is going past 42 weeks. However, inducing labor does not always lead to a quicker or easier birth. In some cases, induction can result in longer, more painful labor, or the need for additional interventions like an epidural or C-section It’s important to understand that labor progresses at its own pace, and forcing it to happen sooner doesn’t always work out as planned.

Myth 9: "You can’t dye your hair during pregnancy."

The Truth:The chemicals in hair dye are not considered to pose a significant risk to a developing baby, especially after the first trimester when the baby’s organs are formed. However, if you are concerned, you can choose to wait until the second trimester or opt for ammonia-free hair dyes. Keep in mind that everyone’s skin reacts differently, and some women may be more sensitive to hair dye during pregnancy, so if you notice any irritation, it’s best to stop using it.

Myth 10: "It’s impossible to have a natural birth after a C-section (VBAC)."

The Truth:** While it was once believed that women who had a C-section should always have future deliveries by C-section, this is no longer the case. Many women can safely have a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), depending on the type of incision from the previous C-section and their overall health. However, not all women are candidates for VBAC, and certain factors like the number of C-sections you’ve had, the reason for the previous C-section, and your overall health must be taken into account. Talk to your doctor about your birth options if you’ve had a previous C-section.

Conclusion

Pregnancy and childbirth are full of surprises, and there’s a lot of advice out there—much of it based on myths and misconceptions. It’s important to remember that every pregnancy is unique, and the best way to navigate your own journey is by consulting with healthcare professionals and relying on evidence-based information. Don’t let myths shape your experience. Educate yourself, ask questions, and trust in the support and care you receive from your medical team. Your health and the health of your baby are what matter most.

NEW TAX REGIME

NEW TAX REGIME.

There is nothing special for the taxpayers in this time’s budget of the Central Government i e 2023-24 The new tax regime has now become the default regime for tax payers. However, many tax benefits have not yet been included in the new tax regime.

In such a situation, there are a large number of taxpayers who want to file income tax returns under the earlier i.e. old tax regime.

For whom will the old tax regime be beneficial?

If a taxpayer has filed his ITR under the new tax regime this year as compared to the last financial year, but this time he has increased investment or has taken a home loan, then to avail exemption on these, such taxpayers will have to go under the old tax regime. ITR has to be filed in. For this you can switch your tax regime.

What does the rule say

The new tax regime was made the default in Budget-2023. That is, if a tax payer does not choose his own tax regime, then his tax will automatically be calculated under the new tax regime. But you can switch your tax regime before the due date of filing ITR.

Salaried employees can change their tax regime every financial year as per their convenience, whereas those having business income, i.e. taxpayers whose income comes from a business, will have the option to switch the tax regime only once.

1- Choose tax regime

First of all, you have to calculate which regime is giving you more benefits. In the new tax regime, you will get a lower tax rate, but most of the deductions and exemptions will not be available. Whereas if you choose the old tax regime, then the tax rates are high, but here you get tax exemption on many types of investments, expenses and other things.

2- Check eligibility

1. Salaried employees do not need to fill a separate form to switch the regime, while filling their ITR form, they can first tell in which regime they are filing the return.

2. If you do business, you can switch the tax regime only once anxd for this you will have to fill Form 10IE before 31st July of the assessment year.

3- How to choose tax regime?

Salaried employee will have to follow these steps-

Open the ITR form.

It is asked at the top of the form which regime you are choosing. Choose the regimen as per your choice here Now fill your ITR, verify it and submit it. Follow these steps to get business income-

Download and fill online Form 10IE

Fill before 31st July of assessment year

Now fill ITR by choosing the tax regime as per your choice. If someone with business income is switching back to the old tax regime, then he can avail this option only if he has never switched back before. Along with this, they cannot take tax exemption under the old regime in the current year’s return.

Fill your ITR carefully and submit it only after checking. Keep in mind that the last date for filing income tax returns for FY 2023-24 (AY 2024-25) is July 31.

VILLAGE HAPPENINGS

Scientists Have Grown Diamonds in Just 150 Minutes

Natural diamonds take billions of years to form in the extreme pressures and temperatures deep underground. Synthetic forms can be produced far quicker, but they typically still require some intense squishing for up to several weeks.

A new method based on a mix of liquid metals can pop out an artificial diamond in a matter of minutes, without the need for a giant squeeze. While high temperatures were still required, in the region of 1,025°C or 1,877°F, a continuous diamond film was formed in 150 minutes, and at 1 atm (or standard atmosphere unit). That's the equivalent of the pressure we feel at sea level, and tens of thousands of times less than the pressure normally required.

The team behind the innovative approach, led by researchers from the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea, is confident that the process can be scaled up to make a significant difference in the production of synthetic diamonds. Dissolving carbon into liquid metal for the manufacture of diamond isn't entirely new. General Electric developed a process half a century ago using molten iron sulfide, for example. But these processes still required pressures of 5-6 gigapascals and a diamond 'seed' for the carbon to cling to.

The reduction in pressure was achieved using a carefully mixed blend of liquid metals: gallium, iron, nickel, and silicon. A custom-made vacuum system was built inside a graphite casing to very rapidly heat and then cool the metal while it was exposed to a combination of methane and hydrogen.

These conditions cause carbon atoms from the methane to spread into the melted metal, acting as seeds for the diamonds. After just 15 minutes, small fragments of diamond crystals extruded from the liquid metal just beneath the surface, while two-and-a-half hours of exposure produced a continuous diamond film.

Though the concentration of carbon forming the crystals decreased at a depth of just a few hundred nanometers, the researchers expect the process can be improved with a few tweaks.

IIT Madras' Quantum Centre of Excellence for Diamond and Emergent Materials (QuCenDiEM) is developing diamond-based hardware for quantum computing and communication. Researchers focus on diamonds' unique properties to isolate and control qubits. The centre aims to ensure India remains competitive in the emerging quantum technology sector by creating defects and exploring superconducting properties.

But why diamonds?

The centre at IIT Madras chose to focus on diamonds because diamonds have applications across sectors, including electronics.

Breakout Nations by

Synopsis

“The old rule of forecasting was to make as many forecasts as possible and publicise the ones you got right. The new rule is to forecast so far in the future, no one will know you got it wrong.”

Ruchir Sharma does neither. In Breakout Nations he shows why the economic ‘mania’ of the twenty-first century, with its unshakeable faith in the power of emerging markets – especially China – to continue growing at the astoundingly rapid and uniform pace of the last decade, is wrong. The next economic success stories will not be where we think they are. In this provocative new book, Sharma analyses why the basic laws of economic gravity (such as the law of large numbers, which says that the richer you are the harder it is to grow your wealth at a rapid pace) are already pulling China, Russia, Brazil and other vast emerging markets back to earth To understand which nations will thrive and which will falter in a world reshaped by slower growth, it is time to start looking at the emerging markets as individual cases. Sharma argues that we must abandon our current obsession with global macro trends and the fad for all-embracing theories. He offers instead a more discerning, nuanced view, identifying specific factors – economic, political, social – which will make for slow or fast growth.

Spending much of his professional life travelling in these countries as Head of Emerging Markets at Morgan Stanley, Sharma is uniquely placed to present a first-hand insider’s account of these new markets and the changes they are undergoing. As the years of unbelievably swift growth draw to their close, this book shows us how it is time for both investors and economists to halt their blind thrust towards an impossible future.
