I'm A "Glass Half Full" Type of Person I came to work this morning asking myself if things are as bad as the political commentators or as I refer to them as, “The Talking Heads “on the morning television shows want to make it seem. Every day, they give the impression that we, as a society, are going to hell in a handbasket. Every time you turn on the news it is one negative thing after another. They push the idea that the only way to save ourselves is to explode and start over. To me this is pure nonsense. I believe, we as Americans, have much to be grateful for. There is a bright future ahead for America if we do not allow these so-called experts to influence us over the ledge. You can call me a “Glass Half

Full” type of person. Some may say that being that way is “seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses.” Well, that is quite the contrary. I view things in a realistic way which focuses on the positive. I refuse to allow a negative thought to influence my optimistic view of things. The most important thing to be grateful for is yourself. It has been an incredibly tough year for many of us. This year will undoubtedly make the history books. Reflect on all your hard work, your strength, your unwavering optimism, and your perseverance to push through. If it were not for all that, you would not be where you are today. No matter what hardships you have faced this year, whether they were big or small, applaud yourself that you

have made it through. This year is almost over, as 2024 is right around the corner. I believe as the new year is upon us, we all need to be looking for the positives. Take a moment to be grateful for the abundance in our everyday lives, even if it is something simple. Find the good in others. Laugh more. Live in the moment. Cheers to the New Year and for another chance for America to do right.

Chamber Chatter with Mary Malone, President — Shop Local! SHOP LOCAL.. It is the national Chamber professional’s battle cry all year round, and with good reason. Did you know that a local purchase has a 48% impact on local economy versus 14% impact of a chain store purchase? That means 3x’s more affect when you SHOP LOCAL. These statistics are from the American Independent business association’s recent study. December is the season of giving where we celebrate family, friends and community. In the rush to search for the perfect gift to recognize someone special in your life, consider a local business. That local purchase become a three-time

winner for the recipient, the business and our local economy! SHOP LOCAL is the official tag line for the month of December. The Chamber membership is made of 63% of small businesses, many of who have been in here in our community for multiple generations. A few of the reasons we hear at the chamber for an individual preference to SHOP LOCAL include; the personal relationships with customers, the attention to your details, excellent customer service, and convenience of pick up and return right here in our area. Whether its local pharmacy, jewelry store, restaurant

gift certificate, bakery or beer and wine purchase, the SHOP LOCAL with Greater Hazleton style is sure to be a winner. Finally, the Chamber team including; Board, Staff and Volunteers would like to take the chance to wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Kwanza. These celebrations and traditions are all based in faith, family and a wish for peace. I think we can all embrace that in sentiment in these challenging times. Thank you for an amazing year and we look forward to what comes next. Cold Hands Warm Hearts This upcoming holiday season Cold Hands Warm Hearts will mark 19 years of partnering with United Charities collecting new coats for children along with hats, blankets, scarves, gloves and socks. All new items collected will be given to less fortunate children and adults in the Greater Hazleton Area. The collection begins Nov. 11th and continues through Dec. 11th. Cold Hands Warm Hearts was started in 2004 in memory of my dad, Joe Maddon, Sr. As an Army Sargent in WWII, my dad would "gift" his hats, scarves, gloves, and candy to the children he met while stationed in Europe. This is one of the only memories of war that he shared with me! Each gift of warmth you give will help keep my dad's memory alive, along with all veterans that bravely served. Boscov's at the Laurel Mall will once again have the Cold Hands Warm Hearts "Giving Tree". This allows you to select your donation for this great cause. Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase new children's coats, along with blankets and socks for anyone in need. Craft Your Own Holiday Gift Tags in 3 Easy Steps (StatePoint) Infusing a little DIY into gift-giving adds a nice, personal touch to the holiday season. One simple, but impactful project to try this year is creating your own gift tags. It’s the first thing recipients see, and a great way to add your signature style to the look of your wrapped presents. To help you get started, art materials supplier Sakura of America is sharing these easy, three-step instructions for creating your own gift tags: 1. Gather your materials. Here is what you’ll need to make your gift tags: • Archival, colorful pens, such as Gelly Roll Retractable pens • Cardstock circles, stars, hearts and other shapes • A hole punch • Twine or ribbon • Scissors • Your creativity 2. Make your tags. Draw creative, seasonal designs on your cardstock

shapes, like a snowflake or wreath, using Gelly Roll Retractable pens. Offering unlimited possibilities for your gift tags, they’re available in 12 colors and three ink effects to write smoothly on an array of paper colors and types. Hint: If you have dark, coated, matte or lightly colored paper stock, use a metallic or white Gelly Roll Retractable pen. If you have white or light uncoated paper stock, try a stardust (glitter) or classic Gelly Roll Retractable pen. Punch a hole near the edge of the cardstock and thread twine or ribbon through. 3. Tag your gift. Take your threaded gift tags and flip them over. Fill out the opposite side for your lucky recipients. Tie on to your presents for a personal, extra-thoughtful touch. Gift proudly! For more crafting and seasonal inspiration, visit sakuraofamerica. com.

Don't Miss The Valley Christmas Toys For Tots Donate Today Tree At SJM Auto Steve Martonick, owner of SJM Auto Sales and Repair, was raised in West Hazleton. Growing up, Steve and his friends would go over to McKenna’s Corner (Broad Street and Winter’s Avenue) and enjoy the large Christmas tree displayed there every year. Later in his life, he moved to the Valley with his family and started his business. He believed it would be a good idea to give back to the community by putting up a large tree like the ones of his childhood at SJM for everyone to enjoy. Nine years ago, he drove around the area looking for a tree that would be appropriate for his plan. From there, he asked the owners for permission to use the tree and recruited area businesses to help move it. They craned, cut, and

transported the tree to the SJM parking lot, where the hole was excavated and the tree was carefully secured. It was then decorated with over 5000 lights and other decorations. It has been an annual event ever since. This year’s tree was donated by the Ann and Richard Grovich of Sugarloaf. In addition to the tree celebration, Martonick made SJM a Toys for Tots drop off. This year’s event is Saturday December 9th from 12pm to 3pm and will feature Mr and Mrs. Santa Claus, live reindeer, free coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts and a DJ spinning Christmas favorites. This year’s vendors will feature Joe Pierogis and Mini Doughnuts and Robyn Smith’s Kravin’ Kabobs.

Two Italian Guys Celebrates 45 Years! The American dream of freedom, opportunity and entrepreneurship came true in the Winter of 1978, Natale Tambasco (shown in photo to the right) and Francesco (Ciccio) DiBlasi were given the chance to become involved in the food service business. They bought a small sub/pizza shop place located at 253 N. Wyoming St., known as George’s Subs (George’s Pitza). They fell upon this opportunity because Natale and Frank had done some cement work for Geroge K. (whom was of Greek descent). The interesting thing is that Natale and Frank were in the cement/bricklaying business known as Frank Natale Tambasco Mason Contractor and never thought they would

end up in the food service business. Two Italians Guys Pizzeria became a reality in November 1978, Natale Tambasco and his wife Lidia and Francesco (Ciccio) DiBlasi with his wife Domenica went from mixing cement to mixing dough. They continued to stay at the rented spot located at 253 N. Wyoming St. by Waschko’s Pharmacy. On August 25th, 1986, they found a new spot to move to, which was located right up the street. Since 1986, Two Italian Guys Pizzeria moved to its current location at 1-3 W. Diamond Avenue, Hazleton. This location was once home to B. & R. Pizza and Kuby’s Korner. This year Two Italian Guys Pizzeria is celebrating its 45th Anniversary, continuing with its traditional recipes under a new generation. Two Italian Guys Pizzeria is known for its pizza, homemade Sicilian pizza, its shoe horse shaped strombolis, over-stuffed hoagies (cold cuts), antipastos, pasta dishes, wings, and other pick foods. If you stop into Two Italian Guys Pizzeria you will still get the same quality and quantity that was instilled in the Business from the first day, it opened. Today the pizzeria is run by Elvis DiBlasi, son of Francesco (Ciccio) DiBlasi who is now retired in Italy, and Loretta Tambasco, daughter of the late Natale Tambasco. Two Italian Guys is a proud small family-owned business in the Hazleton area and is grateful for the continuous years of support and patronage from the community. Over the years we have

served numerous people within the community and have made many friends. Everyone is welcome, call ahead to place your order 570-459-2783 or stop in and grab a slice! We look forward to serving all of you for many years to come. We are the cover advertiser this month so be sure to take a look! We would like to wish all our customers and the Hazleton community a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. Merry Christmas…Happy New Year…Buon Natale…Buon Anno from your friends at Two Italian Guys Pizzeria.

Childhood Holiday Vehicles: Sleds & Wagons By Dr. Lori Verderame No matter your age, getting a new vehicle as a holiday gift is always exciting. New automobiles, motorcycles, or bikes are tried and true holiday offerings that will thrill a close friend or family member. While these vehicles stir the senses, two other modes of transportation say “holiday” like no other. What are the vehicles that prompt both childhood and holiday memories? Sleds and wagons. Originally, sleds were among the most efficient ways to transport loads in snowy parts of the world. Sleds facilitated the movement of goods and people on frozen surfaces dating back many centuries. Distinguished by their long and narrow runner blades, sleds reduced friction and were able to carry heavy loads across the miles. Today, sleds are not used as much anymore for transport, but they are a symbol of wintery fun. More likely, sleds are used by students on snow cancellation days or sleds are transported from the garage to the front porch as part of a winter-welcoming decoration for the house’s exterior. Many of us recall our favorite wintertime pastime of racing down the hills of our neighborhood on our fastest sleds. Looking back, the tradition of painted sleds which boasted hand-colored images of running horses, reindeer packs, or Santa Claus debuted in the Victorian era, circa mid to late 1800s. These handsome sleds were used for fancy winter trips for children and adults. Around 1800, a sled for the purpose of carrying people was invented. It was known as a cariole. A cariole featured enclosed sides, a sturdy back, and a partially covered top or hood. On the secondary antiques market, special 19th Century examples of hand painted sleds with metal runners and cariole sleds range in value from $250 to $2,500. Over time, sleds were used for recreational purposes with variations on the basic form. One of the first sled patents was obtained by the S. L. Allen Company of Continued on next page.

Panorama Community Magazine Continued from previous page Philadelphia, PA in 1889. When it comes to the engineering behind recreational sleds, most had flat runners until about 1907 and then, wooden bumpers emerged. An articulated bumper for steering was introduced in 1928 and straight runners were all the rage until the mid 1930s. One model, called the Lightning Speedster, had a rounded wooden front for easy turning by children sledding during its time of manufacture, circa 1939-1942. By the mid-20th Century, speed

was king as indicated by the Speed King and Radio Flyer sleds were all about fast moving wintertime fun. In the American suburbs of the 1950s thru the 1970s, many companies introduced cool sleds for hilltop exhilaration. For instance, in the 1970s, the Radio Flyer Company marketed the Ski Sled which was intended for adults. The sled had a hand brake for safety, which made parents happy, but kids rarely used, and two skis beneath the raised seat for a ride that simulated skiing. The two skis allowed for edge turns and the sled gave a ride that was like experiencing the giant slalom. Where sleds offered speed, wagons provided comfort. Wooden wagons were some of the most inviting vehicles for children of the 20th Century. Wagons allowed kids to carry their most important treasures with them wherever the holidays took them. Toys, security blankets, teddy bears, and even baby sisters

were hosted in a child’s new and preferably red holiday wagon. First originating in the early years of the 1900s, Radio Flyer’s little red wagons remain a favorite with kids. The company was started by Antonio Pasin, an Italian immigrant. Pasin started the firm with the introduction of the Liberty Coaster wagon named for the Statue of Liberty. His firm grew throughout the 20th Century to make Radio Flyer wagons known to millions of children. Radio Flyer’s red wagon became a popular favorite and common gift at holiday time for good girls and boys. Today, they show up at yard sales, estate sales, and auctions and bring good market value from collectors and sentimental shoppers. By the 1950s, the red wagon became an iconic American toy vehicle. At that time, Radio Flyer wagons were marketed to specialty audiences like the Mouseketeers

Steiff, the popular German toy and teddy bear manufacturer, manufactured wagons featuring their teddy bear logo to accommodate every child’s holiday gift haul of toys. This marketing strategy helped the collectibles market for the wagons prompting many collectors to add them to a long list of must haves. By the end of the 1960s, Radio Flyer had turned fifty and introduced the Skat Racer to a dedicated audience. The Skat Racer was a new children’s vehicle that offered innovations where the earlier pedal cars fell short. Kids of the trendy 1960s and 1970s could, in a Skat

Racer, enjoy a lightweight design, a safe ride, and a sleek new look. This vehicle was a perfect addition to the host of cool kid toys parked in many suburban America garages. Move over pedal cars, sleds and wagons are making a comeback. Happy holidays! Tis The Season to NOT Get Scammed! (BPT) - This is the season when many Americans do a lot of online and retail shopping as well as charitable giving. That is why it's important for consumers to be conscious of financial scams to protect their identities, bank accounts and monetary transactions. From check fraud and peer-to-peer digital payments (i.e., Zelle, Venmo, Paypal or CashApp) to imposters posing as representatives of banks, roughly three-quarters of Americans reported being targeted by scams last year. The Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) recommends taking the following steps to minimize the possibility of falling

victim yourself: 1. Be wary and slow down! Scammers sometimes send text messages or emails claiming to be a fraud alert from the app or your bank. If you don't recognize the email or phone number, you should proceed with caution. Don't open attachments or click links from unknown sources, even if they say they are coming from your bank. Like many online scams, scammers will sometimes offer products at unrealistic prices to trick consumers, so resist demands to act quickly. 2. Don't give out personal information. If a text message asks you to provide any PINs, passwords, Social Security numbers, account information or any other sensitive information, it is likely a scam. Banks rarely ask for this information over the phone and will never ask for a one-time login code. If you have any suspicions, hang up and immediately call your bank. 3. Triple-check payments. And, if you are sending money over a payment app, check every number to ensure accuracy.

Some apps prompt senders to verify the recipient's phone number or otherwise verify their identity. While this is important, double-check the recipient's account information before you click send. Instant payment apps act like cash, so treat it as such. "Fraudsters and scammers are getting more sophisticated to trick consumers out of their own money. That's why it's so important to be mindful before making a payment to someone, providing any personal information, and especially before giving your bank information to anyone," CBA President and CEO Lindsey Johnson said. "Please be vigilant and encourage others to do the same." The Consumer Bankers Association and its membership comprising the nation's leading consumer retail banks encourage consumers to protect their own information and money to avoid falling victim to scams and fraud. Interesting IRS Facts

By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc.

Education Seminars can be informative. At the tax update school this year we learned interesting facts that enlightened us about why the IRS has the challenges that put them so far behind. Remember Dos? Rember 5 1/4 Floppy Disks? Come to find out, the IRS at many offices is still using that technology! Hence, the reason that when you call, they say “we can’t find that file”, because the files are not joined together. When you file your return and you have a new address you would think the IRS automatically updates your new address, not so. The only way they officially update your address is if you file form 8822 for a change of address form. But the agency is finally helping make it easier. On the 1040 for 2023, if your address is different there is a box

to mark to say it is a new address and they will update it in lieu of you filing a form 8822, (which had to be paper mailed and took up to 12 weeks to be processed). Great example of IRS work: Business return accepted 4/4/20 as 1120S for year 2018; every subsequent year rejected when filed as 1120S saying the type was wrong, meaning it was an 1120, where it was not, so the returns were paper filed. Took the case to a taxpayer advocate and found out: the 4/4/20 return was not processed until 9/18/23, at that point they recognized the company as a 1120S as of 1/1/21 and accepted the years 21 and 22 as 1120S that had been paper filed. The 2020 return they had in hand and were going to convert the 1120S to an 1120, which is why? And the 2019 is where? It was mailed, to them, is it in a trailer, on a desk? We are going to have to resend the 2019 because it is AWL. Officially the advocate had us send a

zero amended 21 just to confirm that it is classified as an 1120S, and it took! So, 23 will be a breeze. 1040X amended Personal Returns have been sending electronically instead of going through the mail, except at the seminar, we learned, they are still “paper processed”. So, they will still take 6 to18 weeks to be processed. And 1099K, from PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, etc. was supposed to happen in 2023 for 2022 and the IRS canceled it. Last month we talked about it for 2024 1099K for 2023 per the IRS, now, just last week, the IRS AGAIN CANCELS the 1099K for 2024 that would be for 2023 income unless the taxpayer earned over $20,000 and over 200 transactions. For 2024 the threshold for issuing 1099K is $5000 to phase in reporting requirements, as the IRS presently plans. So, you understand the IRS is a nightmare. Now these snips give you a glimpse of why your returns can take so long. Come, let us help. Call today to make your appointments for 2024. We can be reached on 570-668-8297.

Joseph Anthony Dugan was born May 12, 1897 in Mahanoy City and died July 7, 1982. Dugan was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dugan, and was one of nine children. The family moved to Connecticut when he was 5 years old. Joe Dugan went to high school in New Haven, Connecticut and then to Holy Cross College. He played baseball for one year at the College and had a reputation as an exceptional fielder and a decent hitter. Philadelphia Athletics owner and manager, Connie Mack offered Dugan a $500 signing bonus. Mack put Dugan on the Athletic roster without him playing a Minor League game. Defensively, Dugan was ready for the Majors but not offensively. In 1917 and 1918, respectively, Dugan batted only .194 and .195. After those two years, Joe Dugan became a very consistent hitter. Dugan raised his average to ,271 in 1919 then to .322 with 40 doubles in 1920 and .295 with 10 homeruns, the most ever he hit in 1921. The nickname, ”Jumping Joe” was not given to him for his acrobatic moves around third base but for taking unauthorized leaves from the Team. When not playing well and being booed by the Philadelphia Athletic fans, Dugan would leave the Team without permission and visit family and friends. Connie Mack was very patient with Dugan and would talk him into returning to the Team. Often fans taunted Dugan calling out, “Want to go home?” Public Ledger sportswriter, Tiny Maxwell gave Dugan his name. Though Joe Dugan appreciated Connie Mack, he did not want to play for a losing team and asked to be traded. In 1922, the Athletics traded him to the Red Sox who traded him to the Yankees on July 22, 1922. Dugan wanted to be a Yankee and helped them edge the St. Louis Browns for the Pennant. Major League Baseball temporarily moved the trading deadline to June 15 because it believed the Yankee acquisition of Dugan was a deciding factor in the Yankees winning the Pennant. In 1923, Dugan hit .283, scored 111 runs and led third basemen in fielding. He was the hero of the 1923 World Series providing excellent defense and driving in 5 runs. Dugan batted .302 in 1924 and was considered the best third

Panorama Community Magazine baseman in the American League. In 1925, he suffered a severe knee injury and had to miss part of the season but still batted .292 and again was the top fielding third baseman in the American League. Joe Dugan was the starting third baseman on the great 1927 Yankees, the greatest or one of the greatest teams of all time. Joe Dugan was released by the Yankees in December of 1928 after playing 94 games the previous season. In 1929, he played 60 games for the Boston Braves and was able to hit .304. Joe Dugan sat out the 1930 season but played 8 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1931 before being released. For his 14-year career, Joe Dugan had 1,516 hits, a .280 batting average, 42 homeruns and 516 RBIs. Dugan struck out less than 10% of his at bats but only walked about 5% of the time. His career on base percentage was .317. Dugan played in 5 World Series with the New York Yankees, 3 of which they won, in 1923, 1927 and 1928. He hit a composite .267 in World Series games, going 24 for 90. Dugan’s best World Series game was Game 5 of the 1923 Series when he went 4 for 5 including an inside the park homerun. In retirement, Joe Dugan had a beer distributorship and owned a tavern in New York. He also served as a scout for the Boston Red Sox from 1955-1966. Joe Dugan died of pneumonia and a stroke on July7, 1982. I remember my Dad saving his obituary.

Joe Dugan does appear in Baseball sets but played too late to appear in the famous White Border and Gold Border sets produced in 1909 and 1911 respectively. And retired before the popular Goudey Gun sets began to be manufactured in 1933. He does appear in lesser-known food product sets such as York Caramels in 1927 and the “Ice Cream” sets of 1928. I am familiar with the Ice Cream sets which were produced by Harrington’s Dairy in Dushore, Tharp’s in Shamokin and Yuengling’s in Pottsville which was converted from a brewery to a dairy during Prohibition. Each of the Dairy sets had 60 cards of the best players of that time including many Hall of Famers. For some reason, the Yuengling set is worth double the Harrington and Tharp ones despite their being little difference in the cards. In near mint condition, the Yuengling set is valued at $40,000 and the other two at $20,000 each. Each of the dairies would redeem the Babe Ruth card for an ice cream bar and the complete set for a gallon of ice cream. The Yuengling Ruth is worth $9,000 in near mint condition and the

Harrington and Tharp ones $7,000 in the same condition. The Yuengling Joe Dugan card is valued at $200 in near mint condition and the Harrington and Tharp ones at $90. I actually have an original Joe Dugan Yuengling card in very good condition and a Tharp reprint one. Joe Dugan autographs are generally expensive even if they appear on retro cards – cards produced long after the actual career of a player. A nice inexpensive card of Dugan is the 1961 Fleer one which sells for about $10 in excellent to mint condition. This is a nice one to own for anyone in the area, especially anyone from Mahanoy City.

Start Small. Start With Something. Focus On Being 1% Better. by Dr. Candice Dutko, DNP When looking to make a change with their health, fitness, and/or nutrition, many people often do a complete overhaul all at once and focus on changing everything. This might work for a few days or maybe even a week. Unfortunately, the new way of life is too drastic of a change or the changes made were unsustainable and the person quits and goes back to what they were previously doing. Oftentimes, the person’s confidence is negatively impacted and they believe they are not capable of change or that their situation is hopeless, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. An approach I recommend is to look at a few of your daily habits or practices and see what you can do to incorporate some better practices into those. When you are consistent with those and are doing those new practices close to effortlessly and without much extensive thought, then you are ready to try and tackle something else that will help you get closer to your goal. This helps you build a good foundation with some early wins! As you are making efforts to improve your daily habits, I encourage you to embrace the idea of “progress over perfection.” Perfection is the enemy of good. As the title suggests, focus on being even just 1% better than the day before. Let’s take a look at a few examples of ways to start small and build First mentioned was the practice of not overhauling everything at once. Here are some ideas and examples of putting this habit/practice into place: • If you were hardly eating any fruits or vegetables before, start with maybe adding in a piece of fresh fruit or a serving of vegetables three days this week. If you were already doing that, maybe add in at least one (or both) of those each day. Once you have consistency there, look at maybe even having 2-3 servings of fruits/ vegetables each day. • Instead of going gung ho and starting a fitness program where you workout 5+ days a week and after two weeks, can’t keep up with that, consider starting with even two days a week that you can consistently do. Once you establish a habit of doing that, then add in an additional day or so. When

DECEMBER 2023

I have a new client with me, some may start off with 5 days a week if they know for certain they can sustain it. On the other hand, I have many who haven’t exercised in a long time and start off with just 2-3 days per week to experience those early wins of showing up to the gym and getting something done. Not to mention, if you haven’t been working out for an extended period of time, it is likely that you will experience muscle soreness for the first week or so as you “wake up” muscles that haven’t been used in a long time. Starting out with 2-3 days per week will help make that initial re-entry into exercise much more tolerable. • If you have a goal of walking more often, start off with small manageable

goals. For example, instead of saying “I am going to walk an hour a day” when maybe you haven’t been intentional about walking at all, start off with a 10-15 minute walk a day. Nearly all of us have 10-15 minutes that we can cut out of our daily schedule to go walk for that long. You might feel like you can go longer than that, but commit to yourself that you will walk even just that amount. When that is happening routinely, bump it up! Progress over perfection…Perfect is the enemy of good Forget the all or nothing approach. We are human and incapable of perfection. Not to mention, striving for perfection is likely going to increase anxiety associated Continued on next page.

with the process of making change. There is a great book, Atomic Habits by James Clear, that highlights the tremendous gains that can be made with just being 1% better everyday. Let’s review some examples of how you can incorporate that into health and wellness. • Let’s say you have a water intake goal of 80 ounces daily and presently you drink about 24 ounces daily. Maybe this week, or tomorrow, you strive for 25 or 26 ounces. When that is “easy”, add a few more ounces. It might take you a few weeks to

a few months to be doing it regularly and have developed a routine of appropriate water consumption. • Let’s revisit our walking goal. Maybe you are challenged with being able to walk longer than 15 minutes a day due to your current fitness level or physical condition. Why not try seeing if you can walk further in those 15 minutes? For example, maybe in your initial 15 minute walks you are covering 0.6 miles. Maybe strive to exert yourself a little more and next week, you try to make it 0.65 miles in those 15 minutes. An added note, you don’t have to be

spot on 100% of the time. I encourage you to reflect back on your week and if you implemented your goal habit 5 out of the 7 days…that is still a great success! Be proud! Doing something for 5 out of 7 days will put you further ahead than were you to quit because you couldn’t maintain a certain habit 7 days a week and you quit. Life happens and sometimes, depending on what the habit is, it just won’t happen that day. There still exists an opportunity here to reflect and see if there is something you can do to make that habit, whatever it might be, more compatible with your busier days. For example, if it’s walking, maybe it’s taking the stairs at work when you know you won’t get out in time to go for an evening walk. With increasing your veggie intake and you don’t feel like preparing something, it’s having bags of frozen vegetables on hand that you can heat up quickly on those days where you aren’t feeling like cooking. Change doesn’t happen overnight I’d like to encourage you to be OK with not addressing everything all at once. Too often, when you focus on everything, nothing gets done. As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Likewise, development of new habits doesn’t happen overnight either. Personally speaking, my not-so-healthy habits have existed for 25+ years…to think that I would overcome those in a day, a week, a month, or even one year is unrealistic. Embrace the long-game and you will be far more successful than those who seek the “quick fix” and do something drastic for 6 weeks, only to revert right back to what they were doing prior and end up right back where they started. In closing… • Stack up those small wins and you will be further ahead than were you to be focusing too broadly. • Progress is progress no matter how small. Even with small progress, you are still lapping everyone who isn’t trying at all. • Be patient with yourself as you strive to develop new habits and recognize that the old ones won’t disappear overnight. When Should Chiropractic Be Your First Choice? by Sacco Chiropractic

There is a simple question out there for most people who have never been to a Chiropractor before, when is the right time to seek the care of a chiropractor? Here, at Sacco Chiropractic, when most of our first-time patients enter our office and I sit down to talk with them the always say, “I tried everything, you are my last hope.” Often, these patients have a type of spinal issue or pain, whether it be low back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, or muscle tightness. They explain that they went to their primary care doctor, an urgent care or even the emergency room and were prescribed pain killers, muscles relaxers and/or even a steroid, but they did not really work. Raise your hand if you have heard this before. Most of these patients know that the issue is more than likely coming from their spine, yet they did not choose the spinal specialist, a chiropractor. It would be like chipping your tooth and going to the eye doctor. It just does not make sense. Our medical doctors are busy enough treating the illnesses and other sickness we deal with. Each profession has its place. Chiropractors are here to heal your body, usually the same way you injured it, naturally. Most then say, “Okay I’m interested, but how does it work.” I am a visual learner and I love analogies so I will explain chiropractic this way.

Imagine for a second your body is a refrigerator. You are running fine for years, keeping food cold and fresh, but one catch, you rely on the power in the electrical socket to run properly and efficiently. That electrical socket is your brain and the cord to the refrigerator is your spinal cord, which gives your body the power to run properly. Now say, for example, one day, the power is off. What is going to happen? Well, the food is going to go bad, aka cause your body pain. Now getting drugs for this type of pain is like just going to the grocery store, buying new food, and putting it in the refrigerator that has no power. It is only masking the true cause of the problem for a little while until the food goes bad again because there is no power. So, if you want to fix the true cause of the problem you must fix the source of the issue, the power. You can achieve this by visiting a chiropractor, receiving a specific adjustment to the area that is “out” which will turn the power back on and let your body heal itself and run properly again. If you would like to see how we do things differently, check us out! Sacco Chiropractic, 1730 East Broad Street, Hazleton. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment 570-497-4150. LVHN Named a Global Leader in Adopting and Implementing Health Care Technology For the 18th consecutive year, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is being recognized as one of the top health care organizations in the world for adopting and implementing technology to improve patient safety and outcomes. The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) rates LVHN a Level 9 health care organization in the acute and ambulatory categories in its Most Wired Survey for 2023. “LVHN stands among the best hospitals and health systems in the world because it integrates the latest technological advancements with leading-edge care,” says Luis Taveras, PhD, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President, LVHN. “I am extremely proud of this recognition and believe it represents LVHN’s commitment to continual growth to meet the needs of the community.” “In today’s world, clinicians and patients rely on having a seamless system that helps people schedule appointments and see real-time health information. continue innovating, because innovation enables LVHN to deliver high-quality, leading-edge care in an ever-changing landscape.” Maulik Purohit, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Health Information Officer, LVHN To earn a Level 9 Most Wired recognition, LVHN demonstrated an outstanding record of leveraging the power of digital technology within a visionary corporate strategy. What makes LVHN a global leader in digital health? By adopting and implementing leadingedge technology, LVHN’s clinicians and patients can easily connect with virtual care options like telehealth and remote monitoring. These tools allow patients and their families to receive care when it’s needed most from a location that’s convenient for them, such as at home. Virtual care at your fingertips The MyLVHN app is a secure portal that provides patients access to in-person or virtual appointments with LVHN clinicians. messaging feature. E-Visits are another type of virtual care that a doctor or patient may initiate through MyLVHN. The patient portal also provides access to health and billing information. Remote monitoring A Continuous Ambulatory Remote Engagement Services (CARES) program allows patients with chronic diseases, like congestive heart failure, to rest at home while being monitored. This program provides tools to record blood oxygen levels and temperature. Patients record information in the MyLVHN app, which is reviewed by a nurse on the LVHN CARES team. The ability to detect subtle changes in vital sign trends decreases visits to the emergency department and rehospitalizations. Celebrating the Holidays at Senior Living Communities By: Rachael Timm, Marketing Director of Heritage Hill Senior Community It’s the most wonderful time of the year! For some seniors and their families, holiday celebrations may look a little different. A recent move into a senior living community may have them questioning if or how their timeless traditions will endure. While the location of your aging relative may have changed, senior living communities still offer much to celebrate, and many go all out during these special occasions. Here’s what to expect this holiday season. Festive activities. Activity directors plan a variety of fun events to get residents into the holiday spirit, from festive happy hours with themed refreshments to crafting, classic movie nights, and the customary baking. At Heritage Hill, members of the Busy Bakers Club bake and decorate cookies and reminisce about their favorite holiday pastimes with the group. Continued from previous page. nurses. This program has shown a reduction in mortality and decreased length of stay in the ICU. CHIME evaluated roughly 55,000 hospitals and health care organizations from across the globe. Each participant was required to complete a rigorous survey that rated factors, including data management, population health, infrastructure and patient engagement. Technology is a crucial component in health care and can determine the quality of care a patient receives. The Digital Health Most Wired survey and recognition program offers health care organizations across the world an opportunity to assess how efficiently and effectively they use technology. “We are proud to recognize LVHN’s exceptional dedication to digital health excellence,” says Russell P. Branzell, President and CEO, CHIME. “Its pioneering performance in the industry not only inspires other organizations by example, but also provides patients around the world with better care.” Organizations recognized by CHIME must be leaders in innovation and actively push the industry forward by implementing technology and encouraging deep adoption.

Decorations. Communities plan time for residents to take part in decorating too, whether stringing popcorn garland or placing ornaments on a Christmas tree; it’ll begin to look like the holidays thanks to the residents’ help. Most communities also encourage families to lend a hand with decorating their loved one’s apartment by setting up a small artificial tree with colorful lights, adorning their bed with cozy, holidayprinted blankets, or hanging a seasonal wreath on their door. Holiday trimmings. Food is often a big part of holiday celebrations. Although residents no longer stress over preparing a large feast themselves, many have spearheaded their family gatherings with their traditional recipes. Dining Directors understand the importance of featuring customary holiday dishes during this time. Many communities alter regular menus to

include holiday-specific meal options. Some chefs confer with residents to decide which heirloom recipes to feature as a main course. Community celebrations. Music and other entertainment bring out the holiday cheer. Many communities host festive events that welcome guests into the community. At Heritage Hill, the public is invited to our annual Hill’s Angels Tree Trimming Contest and Open House, which includes local crafters and vendors, photos with Santa, complimentary refreshments, and a tour. “Home” may be in a new setting, but it does not mean the holidays will never be the same. With an open mind, your family’s beloved holiday traditions can evolve. It’s the time well spent together that really matters, and your family may find that you’ve created new traditions to pass on. Dr. Michael Skolnick, DMD - Orthodontist

Chronic wounds impact around 8.2 million Americans annually, affecting lives and families across the nation. NEPA Vascular, led by renowned specialist Dr. John A. Guerriero III, DO RPVI, is at the forefront of revolutionizing wound care by incorporating vascular-specific modalities. These advanced techniques play a pivotal role in addressing chronic wounds caused by peripheral artery disease, osteoradionecrosis, late effects of radiation therapy, and even diabetic foot ulcers. One of the leading advanced modalities today is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a leader in amputation prevention, bringing hope and optimism to numerous patients. So, what exactly is HBOT? At its core, it's a therapeutic medicine that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or chamber. This process significantly increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, promoting the body's natural healing processes. Imagine it as a turbocharge for your body's healing capabilities. At NEPA Vascular, we believe that no two patients are the same. As such, an effective wound care treatment plan must involve a comprehensive approach, utilizing modalities such as debridement, compression wraps, negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), skin grafts, endovenous laser treatments, radiofrequency (RF) ablation, phlebectomy, or even sclerotherapy, in conjunction with HBOT when possible. Ask

The Audiologist Dr. Shea DeNoia

Q:

What are some strategies to assist a person with hearing loss during the holiday season?

A:

The holiday season is a time when challenging listening situations can present themselves more often than usual. Groups of people gather together, which can create a difficult listening environment due to multiple speakers and background noise. Some ways to help a person with hearing loss is to make to speak directly to the person and avoid unnecessary distractions, such as objects in front of your face or having a television playing. Do not speak from another room. Many individuals rely on facial cues to aid in understanding. Also, speaking slowly and clearly can greatly assist a listener. If you happened to notice your loved one struggling more than usual to follow along or engage in conversation, it might be a good opportunity to suggest an appointment with an audiologist who can conduct a hearing evaluation. This will ensure that a hearing loss is not overlooked and, if necessary, measures to correct a hearing loss are taken. For people who wear hearing aids, the same strategies apply. However, there may be settings on their hearing aids specifically for noise. If problems persist, scheduling an appointment with their audiologist would be beneficial.

Indoor Tanning: Just Say No by Stephen Schleicher, MD Last month the American Academy of Dermatology published an article titled: 10 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT INDOOR TANNING”. With winter upon us and warm weather sun exposure months away, here are the top 7: 1) Tanning beds are NOT safer than the sun. Just one indoor tanning session can increase the risk of developing the most deadly form of skin cancer (melanoma) by 20%. 2) Tanning makes your skin age faster. Wrinkles, age spots, and loss of skin firmness tend to appear years earlier in people who tan. 3) Using tanning beds can cause a serious injury. In emergency rooms across the United States, people are treated for burns and eye injuries caused by indoor tanning. 4) Getting a base tan cannot prevent sunburn. Many people believe that using a tanning bed to get a base tan will prevent sunburn. Absolute myth. If you have a base tan, you can still burn. 5) Getting enough vitamin D from tanning beds isn’t possible. The bulbs used in tanning beds emit mostly UVA light; however, your body needs UVB light to make Continued on next page.

Don’t Fall Behind When It Comes To Auto Maintenance by Thomas R. Buff Here we go again. It is hard to believe that the fall season has come to an end and winter has arrived. Every winter season is especially hard on our vehicles; the extended icy conditions mean tons of road salt and spray pounding the exterior of our vehicles. Our batteries will be subject to many cold and icy mornings and our heaters will run on high most of the time we are in our vehicles. But there is no need to worry if you keep your auto in tip top shape. So here are some tips I have gathered from a few ASE Certified Master Automobile Technicians that will keep your car or truck in perfect operating condition through the next few cold months. Battery- The battery works harder in frigid temperatures, so winter does take its toll on the heart of your electrical system. Have your battery terminals cleaned and the battery tested for proper cranking performance. It is cheaper to replace a battery than to have your car towed due to a breakdown. The

fact is that most batteries fail in the winter due to the amount of stress placed on them from summer heat.. Cooling System- Check the condition of all your belts, clamps, and hoses. Worn, glazed, or frayed belts should be replaced as well as bulging or cracked hoses. Flush and refill your cooling system as per manufacturer recommended intervals. The level and concentration of the coolant should be checked. Remember, coolant serves many purposes other than simply preventing the coolant from freezing. Tires- Cold weather can reduce tire pressure so make sure all tires are properly inflated. Don’t forget to check the spare. Inflate the tires to their recommended pressure- check the inside of your vehicle’s door for the “tire placard.” This tag has the proper air pressure for your particular tire and vehicle. If your car is shaking or shimmying, have the tires balanced. The winter season is known for knocking wheel

weights off the tires and causing them to go out of balance. If your tires are showing signs of uneven wear, have a four-wheel alignment performed. Winter can also beat up our steering and suspension systems. Alignments are inexpensive as compared to new tires. Brakes- Routine brake inspection and service is not only important for safety but can also save you money in the long run. Failure to replace brake pads for example can lead to costly rotor replacement. Don’t wait until State Inspection time to have your brake system thoroughly inspected. Winter is not the time to drive with faulty brakes. Oil & Filter- Change the oil and filter as specified in your owner’s manual. Believe it or not, this is one of the most neglected service items. Keep your vehicle in good operating condition by having all fluids and filters inspected and replaced if necessary.

Safety Items- Check all of your lights for proper operation and replace the bulbs if necessary. Replace your wiper blades and top off your windshield wiper fluid. It is a good idea to keep a gallon in the trunk. Store some essentials such as an extra coat, road salt , a flashlight and anything that would help if you became stranded. Exterior- Winter wreaks havoc on your cars exterior: Road salt is a car’s worst enemy. To protect your investment, have your car professionally cleaned. This service is one that will pay off in the long run. An exterior waxing and interior shampooing will keep your car protected during the winter season.. Today’s economic outlook is forcing auto owners to keep their automobiles longer. This is why proper maintenance is important all year long to extend the life of your automobile. So take time to prepare your vehicle for whatever Old Man Winter throws at us. Happy Motoring and Happy Holidays!

How To Pick The Right Tires For Your SUV (BPT) - Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are now the dominant vehicles on U.S. roads, making up more than half of new car sales for three years running, according to J.D. Power. The SUV segment has become as diverse as it is large, ranging from three-row luxury vehicles to sporty crossovers to off-roading powerhouses, and similarly, SUV drivers are far from a homogenous lot, putting their cars to a variety of uses. So if you are among the millions of SUV drivers in the U.S., you need to ensure your vehicle is equipped with the right tires for the job. Hankook Tire's Dynapro line-up is designed to offer SUV (and light truck) drivers a complete range of tires for all conditions and journeys. Here are five types of tires, from on-road cruising to off-road adventuring, that SUV drivers should consider based on their driving needs. For the road warrior: A comfortable, all-season touring tire - Dynapro HPX Drivers who rack up the miles in their

SUV don't want to compromise comfort for performance, or handling for tread life. They need an all-season touring tire that can offer smooth, comfortable driving in a variety of weather conditions, and can stand up to tens of thousands of miles on the road. Hankook Tire just announced an all-season touring tire, the all-new Dynapro HPX, delivering great braking and handling performance in rain and light snow, while also minimizing tread pattern noise to maximize the cabin experience. It also comes with a 70,000 mile warranty and is designed to last 12% longer than competing tires. For the daily driver: A reliable highway tire - Dynapro HT Drivers focused on school runs, office commutes and the occasional road trip for vacation need a tire that can be relied on all year round without breaking the bank. An all-season highway tire that offers a generous mileage warranty ensures the tires will deliver good bang for their buck. And with all-season reliability, these tires can be trusted to keep drivers and their passengers safe in a variety of weather conditions. For the dirt road enthusiast: An on- and off-road all-terrain tire - Dynapro AT2 Xtreme Some drivers love a mixture of Sports and Utility from their SUV - they enjoy taking their vehicle off the beaten track on weekends and commuting to work on a Monday morning with fresh mud stains on the fender. An all-terrain product that mixes aggressive design with on-road comfort helps drivers tackle gravel and loose surface. For the off-road expert: A rugged terrain tire - Dynapro XT More dedicated off-roaders might be looking for a tire they can fit to their SUV when it's time to hit the trails. A rugged terrain tire can handle steep profiles, off-camber environments and even rock crawling, on a variety of surfaces from grass to dirt to sand. The ideal rugged terrain tire will offer rigid block patterns and deeper grooves to handle these conditions. For the ultimate outdoor adventure: A tough mud tire - Dynapro MT2 SUV drivers looking to tackle the toughest terrain need a tire that can handle everything from the deepest mud to the roughest rocks. This class of tires should offer extra protection from chips and tears on gravel, massive treads to deliver ultimate off-road traction, and ejectors that release mud and stones to maximize grip. Hankook's Dynapro line-up offers a broad range of performance characteristics to meet these needs, for drivers keeping their wheels squeaky clean or spending their Saturdays winching through the woods.

The Technician Who Saved Christmas By the HVAC Experts at S.J. Kowalski

This is not the usual column filled with HVAC advice. It’s a fun piece about the technician who saved Christmas. Twas the night before Christmas when the heat went down. The furnace quit working that heated Christmas Town. The elves were all freezing as they dropped one by one. Mrs. Claus said to Santa, “Something must be Done!” “The reindeer are so cold they cannot even fly.” “I know your not a mechanic, but please, please try.” “It’s no good,” said St Nick to his shivering wife. “You know I haven’t fixed a thing in my entire life.” Mrs. Clause said, “It’s Christmas Eve! You’ve got no choice.” “Children are waiting for you so they can rejoice.” Santa grumbled and watched an internet video. He thought this isn’t a job for an average Schmoe. Even one who’s magical as Santa Clause is. He needed one who was a HVAC whiz. Mrs. Claus said “While you’ve been wasting time on line,” “I called this number 570-455-2600, “And said it’s an emergency!” A nice young man named Kyle said, “That’s why I’m on call Tonight.” “ I’ll be on my way and I’ll fix it right.” When the tech arrived , he slipped his shoe covers on. He smiled and said , “This Shouldn’t take too long.” The Claus’ waited as nervous as they could be. Trying to stay warm by sipping some tea. When the tech emerged, he said, “It was strange to see, a furnace manufactured in 1903,” “Perhaps you should consider replacing the beast,” “Because this one is dead. Oh, it’s really deceased.” “But you said you could fix anything.” said Santa. “I can, but you want speed and this won’t be real quick.” “First, I need the parts and I won’t get them tonight.” “ It’s Christmas Eve,” said Santa, “Can’t you see our plight?” Kyle said, “There is a possible solution,” “One that could bring this to a

quick resolution,” “If I replace the old beast, I just might succeed,” “ And you get all the heat you possibly need,” “Do it,” said Mrs. Claus, “And ignore the cheapskate,” “Because we can’t afford for Christmas to be late,” Santa gets the glory but the woman calls the shots,” “Just like in every other household is it not?” Kyle knew enough to keep his mouth shut and started to work without taking a short cut. It was not very long before the heat came on. As the elves started

to thaw, one gave a big yawn. “To work. To work,” said Santa Clause, jolly once more. “You can rest tomorrow. And now, the reindeer must soar.” “Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas.” They heard Santa call. “Well , you saved Christmas.” Said Mrs. Clause. “Thank You.” “Just doing my job, said Kyle, “It’s what we technicians do at S. J. Kowalski, Inc. Expert Tips to Help Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays

Have-A-Ham

(BPT) - With the holiday season already underway, your schedule will soon be packed with festive get-togethers, cocktail parties and family gatherings. To help make the upcoming season a little more joyful and a lot less stressful, try taking a more proactive approach by starting your holiday prep and cleaning routines now - with a little help for the home along the way. Below are some top tips, compliments of the MaidPro PROs to help you get your home holidayready so you can relax and enjoy the festivities more than ever this year. 1. Develop a gameplan Before throwing a party or hosting overnight visitors, identify the main areas in your home that are due for a deep clean - and prioritize the rooms guests are most likely to visit. That may include your living room, dining room and powder room, as well as any guest bedrooms. Focus on decluttering these areas first so you are able to access surfaces in need of a deeper clean. 2. Start with a ground-up deep clean - Typical cleaning routines

may include wiping down counters, dusting, mopping and vacuuming, but did you know there is a smart way to vacuum? Vacuuming in a zig-zag pattern is the best way to truly clean carpets. The fibers in carpets are primarily twisted loops that get dirty from all sides, so vacuuming in only one direction isn't always effective. To fully clean carpets, work the vacuum across a room in one direction in a zig-zag pattern. Repeat the process from a right angle. This pattern provides the best results, saves time and can help reduce symptoms of allergies. 3. Deep clean the kitchen before holiday cooking - Before guests start arriving, be sure to deep clean the kitchen in preparation for holiday baking and entertaining. Deep clean the range, stovetop, surfaces and grates. Clean out the refrigerator to make room for party foods and be sure to dust the top of the refrigerator. Also give a fresh clean to all large and small appliances. Finally, wipe down kitchen cabinets to tackle any forgotten spills. 4. Make your guest room extra

Panorama Community Magazine hospitable - Is your guest room doing double duty as an office? Has your guest bathroom become a catch-all area for things with nowhere else to go? Now is the perfect time to refresh and refocus. Enter your guest room with a visitor's eye. Deep clean bathrooms and medicine cabinets (yes, people will look). Wash or spot clean area rugs. Dust all surfaces, including bookshelves, photo frames, and art - don't forget the ceiling fans! Finally, clean trash receptacles and add fresh liners. 5. Prepare in advance for timehonored holiday stains - Holiday food, beverages and traditions can cause some unexpected spills and spots. To remove red wine, spray water on the stain to keep it wet. Cover it with white vinegar to neutralize purple and red pigments. Follow with liquid detergent and hot water to flush out the stain. For dripped candle wax, rub ice

cubes over the wax until it hardens. Scrape up most of the wax and place a paper bag over the patch that has residual wax. Use a warm iron to press over the area to liquefy the wax, allowing it to absorb into the bag. For soot stains from the fireplace, grab a dry brush and scrub off as much of the soot as possible (avoid water). Apply some rubbing alcohol on the edge of a sponge or towel and blot until the last of the stain is gone.
