Celebrating 100 Years at Fellin's Travel back in time with us to 1922, when John and Mary Fellin opened the doors to a new store in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Specializing in fine jewelry, they recognized the importance of serving their customers with excellent style and craftsmanship.

They joined the newly-established American Gem Society in 1936. The society is dedicated to education and the highest ethical and professional standards among jewelers. Over 80 years later, Fellin’s Jewelers’ AGS affiliation remains unbroken.

In the 1950’s, daughter, Celeste and her husband, Edward Kosko, took the helm from John & Mary. Under their guidance, many new lines of precious gemstone jewelry and fine giftware, such as Waterford Crystal, were added to an already impressive selection.

Celeste and Ed began an extensive expansion and restoration of their historic center-city location in 1984. They carefully oversaw the preservation of design elements from what was the Lyric Theatre (c. 1900) uncovered during the course of renovation. When the project was completed, Fellin’s elegant display space had doubled.

In the mid-1980’s, following in their late father’s footsteps, Mary Celeste and Andrea Kosko, joined their mother, Celeste, as partners in their well-known and highly regarded business. Recognized by the American Gem Society as a Registered Jeweler, Mary Celeste Kosko proudly continues her grandfather’s and father’s dedication to excellent quality, service, style and value.

Discovering Queen Victoria’s Jewelry Gift

By Dr. Lori Verderame With Valentine’s Day celebrated this month, jewelry is on the minds of both givers and receivers. One of the most popular and growing collecting category is antique and vintage jewelry, particularly in precious metals like gold and silver jewelry. Many collectors and resellers are looking for fine gold jewelry from the 19th and 20th Centuries at auctions and online. They are looking for jewelry pieces at thrift stores, yard sales, antiques shops, estate sales, too. These pieces are stunningly beautiful and highly sought after in today’s very active jewelry market.

If you are a collector or reseller of antique or vintage jewelry, you need to know the many different international gold purity marks that are found on both silver and gold jewelry. These marks can indicate time period or age and point to value.

Recognizing foreign marks will help treasure hunters find fine jewelry pieces.

For example, some pieces of jewelry that date to the mid to late 19th Century also known as Victorian jewelry made during the years of Queen Victoria’s reign (18371901) are not marked the same way that American jewelry pieces of the same era are marked. In the Victorian period, some

gold pieces from Great Britain were marked 15 karat gold or with the numbers 625. These British purity marks mean that a piece of gold jewelry is 62.5% pure gold or has a gold fineness measuring 15 karats.

For instance, this 15 karat gold mark can be found on this gold double heart pin enhanced with gold links and seed pearls. I appraised this special pin at one of my antiques appraisal events during my nationwide tour. The gold and seed pearl pin was a gift from HRH Queen Victoria herself. The gold double heart pin was owned by a relative of a lady in waiting to HRH Queen Victoria. The pin was gifted from the Queen in the late 1800s. With its impressive provenance and the recent sale of Queen Victoria’s jewels at auction, this pin commanded a very high value on the antique jewelry market.

Today, it is more difficult to find pieces of 15 karat gold jewelry. Why? Because 15 karat gold is a gold purity standard that was discontinued in 1932.

In the early 1930s, 14 karat gold became

the gold standard for jewelry. There two basic reasons for the switch from 15 karat gold to 14 karat gold. One reason is that 14 karat gold is somewhat more durable for everyday jewelry wear than 15 karat gold. And, jewelry collectors are more attracted to the golden color of 14 karat gold when compared to 15 karat gold pieces which have a mossy green hue. A piece of 15 karat gold jewelry has approximately 4% more pure gold than 14 karat gold. This difference impacts the color of 14 karat gold which many collectors prefer.

Unique Shopping in Nescopeck at Farmhouse 52

When cousins Jill Shupp and Bill Evans decided to combine their passions, they created a truly unique experience, Farmhouse 52.

Jill’s passion is distinctive fashion and Bill’s is wood crafting. After attending a craft show together, they decided to open a permanent location.

The unqiue Gift Boutique and Craft Shop opened in April 2021, in their grandmother June Croop’s house. They remodeled the house that was built in the early part of the 20th century by adding an extension and even used parts of a barn that dates back to 1893.

Who is Cupid?

The Unofficial Mascot of Valentine's Day The mention of Cupid typically conjures up images of a cherubic infant wielding a bow and arrow, but this wasn’t always the case. Long before the Romans adopted and renamed him—and way before his association with Valentine's Day—Cupid was known to the Greeks as Eros, the handsome god of love.

Cupid and Greek Mythology One of the first authors to mention Eros (circa 700 B.C.) was Hesiod, who described him in “Theogony” as one of the primeval cosmogonic deities born of the world egg. But later accounts of the lineage of Eros vary, describing him as the son of Nyx and Erebus; or Aphrodite and Ares; or Iris and Zephyrus; or even Aphrodite and Zeus—who would have been both his father and grandfather.

Armed with a bow and a quiver filled with both golden arrows to arouse desire and leaden arrows to ignite aversion, Eros struck at the hearts of gods and mortals and played with their emotions. In one story from ancient Greek mythology, which was later retold by Roman authors, Cupid (Eros) shot a golden arrow at Apollo, who fell madly in love with the nymph Daphne, but then launched a leaden arrow at Daphne so she would be Incense & Burners repulsed by him.

In medium bowl, whisk egg. Add buttermilk, 2 tablespoons butter, vanilla extract and food coloring; whisk until combined.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir to combine.

Spray heart-shaped cookie cutter with nonstick cooking spray and place in skillet. Add enough batter to fill heart.

Cook 2 minutes. Remove heart cutter.

Flip pancake and cook 1 minute.

Serve with butter, syrup, powdered sugar and raspberries.

Note: If mixture is too thick, add water until desired consistency is reached.

Chocolate Coated Strawberry Treats Servings: 5 • 1 1/4 baking chocolate chips • 1/2 baking peanut butter chips • 3 tablespoons coconut oil, divided • 1 pound fresh strawberries • shredded coconut • crushed almonds In saucepan, add baking chocolate chips and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Melt on low to medium heat and whisk until smooth.

In a small bowl, add baking peanut butter chips and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. Whisk together until smooth.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Dip all strawberries into melted chocolate. Then, dip 1/3 in coconut, 1/3 in almonds and 1/3 just chocolate and lay on tray.

Drizzle the melted peanut butter over the plain chocolate strawberries.

Put in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or until strawberry treats are chilled.

Trucker Hats for Dogs Provide Eye Protection and Street Style (TR) -- Some clothes for pets are strictly stylish, some are purely functional, and some are both. The idea of a trucker hat for a dog may seem strange, but in fact many dogs, especially those with blue and light-colored eyes, suffer from sun sensitivity that makes them squint and become anxious in bright conditions.

Tony Choi, an engineer in San Diego, Calif., and his veterinarian wife, Dr. Kathy Burnell, launched the initial PupLid trucker hat for dogs in 2018 to help make dogs comfortable after they found it significantly reduced anxiety in their own sun-sensitive dog, Buddy. They experimented with other dog hats and designs for months, but determined that a modified trucker hat design stayed in place and provided the best protection for Buddy.

February is National Pet Dental Month

by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital One of the easiest to check and most overlooked aspects of keeping your pet healthy, is a healthy mouth. If you haven't done so recently (and don't feel bad if you haven't, most people don't), pick up a lip and look at your pet's back teeth in a well lit area.

Large chunks of brown tartar, red, eroding gums, and bad breath are all easily recognizable signs of an unhealthy mouth.

Most people seems to think, that bad teeth is a problem that is limited to the mouth. Unfortunately, this just isn't true.

Bad teeth frequently cause liver trouble, kidney trouble, and heart trouble in animals. I have cured a number of heart mummers in dogs and kidney problems in cats simple by cleaning their teeth and treating with antibiotics. More importantly, bad teeth cause pain in animals the same as they do for people. Dogs and cats are much more tolerant of mouth pain, then we humans. Just because your animal is eating, doesn't mean that everything is O.K. If you notice signs of bad teeth, this is also an indication that your pet is in pain.

Curt Simmons: The Last of the 1950 Whiz Kids

The first baseball game I recall listening to was one of the 1950 World Series between the Yankees and the Phillies in which the Bombers swept the Phils in a very low scoring World Series in which the Yanks only tallied 11 runs and the Phils but 5. Vic Raschi beat National League MVP and the top relief pitcher Jim Kostanty, who was a surprise starter in Game 1. The score was 1-0. My all-time favorite pitcher, Allie Reynolds defeated Robin Roberts 2-1 in a 10 inning game. One of the best Phillies pitchers, Curt Simmons, a 21 year old who was 17-8 for the Phils, got the call to report to Army Reserves and missed the month of September and the entire World Series.

Curtis Thomas Simmons was born May 19, 1929 and pitched in the Majors from 1947-1950 and 1952-1967 winning 193 games and losing 183 with a 3.54 ERA. He struck out 1,697 and issued 1063 walks. Simmons hurled 3,348 and 1/3 innings. He was the youngest of the Whiz Kids and as of this writing the only living one. During the 1950s teammate and friend Robin Roberts were the 7th best all-time right and left handed pitching duo. Roberts was right handed and Simmons left.

Simmons attended Whitehall High School and led the team to 3 straight District titles. He also led his American Legion team to 2 State titles. Originally, Simmons was an outfielder and batted over .400. In 1947, Bob Carpenter arranged an exhibition game between the Phillies and the Lehigh Valley All-Stars.

4,500 attended the game which ended in a 4-4 tie.

Simmons fanned 11 Phils and would have won the game save for some shoddy defense by his teammates. Carpenter quickly made Simmons one of the socalled “Bonus Babies” for $65,000 (one of the highest paid signings at the time). Later the New York Giants offered $125,000 but Simmons would not go back on his word that he would sign with the Phils. At that time, big time “Bonus Babies” had to be brought up to the Majors after one year in the Minors. I remember Tommy Carroll and Frank Leja of the Yankees. Carroll had more pinch running appearances than at bats. His career average was .300. He had 3 hits in 10 career at bats. Poor Frank Leja who was going to be the Yankees next great power hitter. He couldn’t hit his hat size going 1 for 25 for his career. Johnny Antonelli was another “Bonus Baby” for the Boston Braves who became a star pitcher for the Giants. The Braves helped the New York Giants greatly by also trading 1948 Rookie of the Year, Al Dark a fine shortstop, who was a much better athlete and hitter than Pee Wee Reese or Phil Rizzuto even though both are in the Hall of Fame and Dark is not.

Curt Simmons missed the entire 1951 Season in military service but returned in 1952 to go 14-8 with a National League leading ERA. He also led the Majors in shutouts with 6. Throughout the 1950s, Simmons had many good years with the Phillies but was released on May 17, 1960 because of a sore arm. The St. Louis Cardinals signed him 3 days later and Simmons resurrected his career. IN 1963, he won 15 games and 18 in 1964 when the Cardinals defeated the Yankees 4 games to 3 to win the World Series. Simmons pitched very well in 2 starts with a 2.51 ERA but had a loss and a no decision. 1964 was Was the last good year for Simmons. Later he pitched for the Cubs and Angels before retiring to operate a Golf Course he coowned with his close friend, Robin Roberts.

Over his career, Simmons had 163 complete games including 36 shutouts.

Panorama Community Magazine Simmons was the last player to retire from those active in the 1940s save for recently named Hall of Famer, Minnie Minoso who “unretired twice” for short spans. Baseball greats Hank Aaron and Stan Musial both named Simmons as the toughest pitcher they faced even though Aaron did have 6 homeruns off him.

After the Phils won the 1950 Pennant with many young stars such as Richie Ashburn, Del Ennis, Granny Hamner, “Puddin’ Head” Jones, Dick Sisler, Andy Seminick, Bubba Church, Russ Meyer, Stan Lopata, etc. along with the young pitchers Roberts and Simmons and older relief specialist, Jim Konstanty, the Phils seemed to have the future well in hand. Unfortunately, Team owner, Bob Carpenter adamantly refused to sign Afro-American players for many years, passing on Roy Campanella, Hank Aaron and Junior Gilliam among others. The first black to play for the Phils had a great name – John Kennedy, but he lasted for only a handful at bats.

Curt Simmons was placed on the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1993 and celebrated his 60th Wedding Anniversary with his childhood friend and later wife Dorothy in 2011. In that same year, Simmons was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. In 1997, he was inducted into the Dodgers All Opponent Hall of Fame.

Curt Simmons was a 3 time All Star and started the 1957 Game. With the Phillies, he finished 7 times in the League’s Top 10 in ERA. Simmons was a close friend of pitcher Bob Miller who died at 94 leaving Simmons as the last remaining Whiz Kid. The two conversed by phone every couple of weeks before Miller’s death.

Another pitcher who was a fine one for the Cardinals, Cubs and Phillies who almost had identical statistics as Simmons was Larry Jackson.

Simmons was 193-183 with a 3.54 ERA and Jackson 194-183 with a 3.40 ERA. Jackson pitched well for the Phillies in his final 3 years in the National League. He retired rather than report to Expansion Team, Montreal.

Curt Simmons appears on many baseball cards beginning with his 1949 Bowman Rookie. He is present in all of Bowman issues from 1949 through 1955 when Topps bought out Bowman. Simmons is included in the famous 1952 Topps set and the Topps sets from 1956 through 1967. He does not appear in the 1953, 1954, and 1955 Topps sets. Simmons cards from the 1950s are in the $10 to $25 range and the ones from the 1960s are less than half of that. Cards of Simmons are plentiful.

by Edward Jones - Financial Advisors Are you expecting a tax refund this year? If so, what will you do with it?

Of course, the answer largely depends on the size of your refund. For the 2020 tax year, the average refund was about $2,800, according to the Internal Revenue Service. But whether your refund this year will be about that size, smaller or larger, you can find ways to benefit from the money.

Here are some possibilities: • Contribute to your IRA. You’ve got until April 18 to fully fund your IRA for the 2021 tax year. But if you’ve already reached the maximum for 2021, you could use some, or all, of your refund for your 2022 contribution. Assuming you did get around $2,800, you’d be almost halfway to the $6,000 annual contribution limit. (If you’re 50 or older, you can contribute up to $7,000.)

• Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to invest your refund in a 529 education savings plan. A 529 plan’s earnings can grow federal income-tax free, and withdrawals are federal income-tax free provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. If you invest in your own state’s plan, you might get a tax deduction or credit. A 529 plan can be used to pay for college, vocational training and even some K-12 expenses in some states. Plus, if you name one child as a beneficiary, and that child’s educational journey does not require the funds from a 529 plan, you may change the beneficiary to another eligible family member of the original beneficiary.

• Add to the “cash” part of your portfolio. It’s generally a smart move to keep at least a portion of your overall

investment portfolio in cash or cash equivalents, because the presence of cash can help you in two ways. First, since its value won’t change, it can help cushion, at least to a degree, the effects of market volatility on your portfolio. 2021 Tax Laws

Some very interesting credits and expenses that will require good documentation and sometimes a need to file when you have not in the past are in play for the tax year 2021. Business Filings began on January 7 and Personal Filing, with W-2’s, began on January 24.

As in recent years, if your refund includes Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit the refund will come no sooner that mid-February.

For many people in the last few years Head of Household status and stimulus recapture has also delayed refunds, sometimes for months. For taxpayers without obligations that would “take their refund” being concerned about the delay they can elect to file with a “Bank Product” so that they can potentially get an advance. The fees for filing this way are paid to a “third party”, the Bank, not your tax preparer.

Filing will be required this year for many people who regularly do not need to file due to their income level, or lack of income. Stimulus payments, early Child tax Credit payments, a birth of a child, and dependent care expenses may give refunds or balance

If you fail to file a 2021 return, assuming you do not need to, you could find yourself receiving a letter from the IRS within three years that they require a return, and odds are you will not still have your records. Best advice, take your documents to a qualified preparer to see “if you need to file”; make sure that preparer is capable of doing a “look over” for a nominal fee, not full charge, to determine, yes or no, and what their full fee would be.

Let’s start with early Child tax Credit payments, these were issued based on tax returns and if a dependent child received Social Security Benefits due to the parents. These credits were not a bonus, they were early credits sent to help the cash flow of income. The credits may not be qualified though unless the parents had earned income and/or their income is so high that the credit “phases out”. If you are not eligible or have too much income, you may have to pay back that early

taxpayers and dependents, you need to file a return to get the additional dollars due you, same as last year to “reconcile” the stimulus payments.

Child Care Dependent Expenses- in the past these expenses were limited in several ways, the age, the amount paid, both parents had to have income and then a % (based on the earnings of the parent/s) of the amount paid was given as a non-refundable credit against the tax liability.

Current tax law has the Child Care Dependent Expense Credit as being fully refundable. It has increased the allowed payments for child care to $8,000 for one child and $16,000 for two or more children. The “credit” refunds up to 50% of the child care expenses that you paid out of pocket, unless your income “phases out” the credit (greater than $125,000).

Taxpayers claiming this credit should protect themselves, and a good tax preparer will ask for, proof of the amount paid, to who it was paid, the provider’s address, phone number, federal EIN or SSN and signed.

Meals – For many years meals have been 50% deductible for businesses, 80% for truck drivers (usually on perdiem). For 2021 and 2022 meals spent for legitimate business purposes at a restaurant will be 100% deductible (again, your best interest, have proof!!!).

Coffee shops and deli expenses are only 50% deductible; they are not considered a “restaurant”.

2020 401K withdraws income delayed. If a taxpayer withdrew up to $100,000 for early distribution in 2020, they had zero 10% early withdrawal penalty and had the option of paying the income tax over three years or all in 2020, or paying back that withdrawal and paying zero income tax. If you go to your “repeat preparer” your records are in the system and should be handled properly. The payback date is 33 1/3% on the anniversary date of the withdraw(s). If you paid tax and then subsequently “payback” the early 401K withdraw(s), you can later amend your taxes and get a refund on the tax dollars you paid that were not due.

Lifetime Learning Credit. Once a taxpayer has qualified and used the 4 years of AOTC (American Opportunity Tax Credit), refundable and nonrefundable portions, the Lifetime Learning Credit will give some nonrefundable credit to the taxpayer if their income is less than $69,000 or $138,000 for MFJ. The credit is 20% of the first $10,000 qualified education expense, with a maximum of $2,000 per return. The credit phases out for income between $59,000 and $69,000 (single) or $118,000 and $138,000 (MFJ).

Health insurance through the Market Place – as in years past this must be “reconciled”. For the tax year 2020 the ACA penalty, or payback of too much reduced insurance was waived.

It appears that was a one year grace and for filing 2021 if your income was greater than the estimate you gave healthcare.gov you may be facing a “penalty”; if your income was less, then as in the past, you are eligible for additional credit, or “a refund”.

Many tax laws and credits are still not “settled” and some tax forms are still “not finalized or approved” due to the fact laws are not settled, so you can see that it is probably in your best interest with all these changes to use a professional preparer to file 2021 taxes.

It is no secret that the automotive industry has been hit hard concerning a variety of shortages since the pandemic. The most crucial is the lack of semiconductor chips used in new vehicles. Empty new car lots are a testament to the fact that this is a major problem. But that is only the tip of the so-called iceberg. Manufactures are now struggling to access essential materials such as plastics, foam, steel, tires and many other critical components. The shortages are now trickling down to repair shops and motorists who need car repairs.

The shortage of parts and critical components are making it very difficult

for motorists, parts vendors and repair shops resulting in vehicles that are stranded at repair shops for days and at times weeks. Lists of appointments for vehicle repairs are growing. This creates a real dilemma for those who are trying to keep their older car running due to the fact there are a limited number of new cars to be found. Motorists are now keeping their vehicles longer which leads to more repairs and maintenance. Many shops and dealer’s area are all facing these growing shortages which leads to frustrated motorists.

The shortages of microchips seem to get all the headline news but the shortages of materials have even

trickled down to important parts such as windshield wipers, batteries and tires. In fact, tire shops were having a problem finding studded snow tires. These growing problems are now causing a chain reaction, causing prices for parts to climb and repair bills to drain your wallet. Parts vendors are claiming that more people are now repairing their own vehicles which leads to a higher demand for aftermarket parts.

As shops become filled with a shortage of parts and a backlog of repair orders, a bigger problem is growing under the hood. Shops are short on the skilled hands of the technicians that repair our vehicles. Factors such as the large numbers of retirements from the industry and the need for proper training to enter the field is becoming a major dilemma in all areas of the transportation fields. The labor industry is forecasting the automotive industry to be short nearly 800,000 technicians between now and 2025. Couple these statistics with the lack of workers in all other areas such as parts, sales, delivery and so on and it creates higher labor costs and longer waits for repairs.

It seems there is no end in sight when it comes to rising prices, shortages and wait times for automotive service and parts needs. Call your repair shop and make an appointment in advance. Survey: 4 Ways Driving Could Change in 2022 (BPT) - Our driving habits and relationships with our cars have made many unexpected turns throughout the pandemic - from driving every day, to the closure of many public places, leading Americans to leave their car in park for quite a while. Since then, we've seen driving increase, but we are still not driving as much as we used to.

Despite these changes, the Hankook Tire Gauge Index found that Americans appear content with their current driving habits, with only about 1 in 4 (23%) saying they want to change how much they currently drive. However, here are four ways we can expect driving to change (or not!) in the new year.

Continuously shifting driving patterns With the continuation of remote or hybrid work, and various other factors, most people (78%) are driving less than 200 miles per week.

But things could shift as we head into 2022. Just over half of Americans

(51%) expect to drive the same amount. Of those who do expect a change in their driving habits, it's fairly split on whether they expect to drive more often (23%) or less (26%). (For what it's worth, younger generations seem to think they'll hit the road more frequently.)

Car travel could continue to increase One thing is certain: people prefer to travel by car. Americans are 36% more comfortable traveling long distances by car, versus planes, compared to this time last year. This is fueled by an increasing number of travelers switching from public transportation and ride share services to driving their own vehicle to avoid close contact with others during the pandemic.

And while it's impossible to know what 2022 will bring for the road ahead, it's safe to say we can expect our driving patterns to continue shifting gears.

Installing Bathroom attach your cement Tile Like A Pro backer board with (Family Features) Updating the flooring can help infuse new life into tired, outdated bathrooms. For an upscale, polished look that doesn’t have to break the bank, consider installing tile flooring.

Before you get started, you’ll want to make some decisions about the look and feel of your flooring: Ceramic or stone? Weigh factors such as porosity, how slippery the surface may be when wet and how well it retains heat or cold. Ultimately, your decision hinges on the needs and uses of your family.

Complement or contrast? Define the overall style you want as well as the colors and tones that will help best achieve your vision.

Big or small? Generally, the larger the tile, the fewer grout lines, and too many grout lines in a smaller space can create the illusion of clutter. However, smaller tiles can eliminate the need to make multiple awkward cuts, and small tiles are perfect for creating accent patterns or introducing a splash of color.

When you’ve got your overall look and materials selected, keep these steps in mind as you begin laying the flooring: 1.Prepare your subfloor. Use a level to check for uneven spots; you need an even surface to prevent cracks in the tile or grout as well as rough spots that could pose tripping hazards. Use patching and leveling material to create a consistent surface. Apply a thin layer of mortar then

screws. Cover joints with cement board tape, apply another thin layer of mortar, smooth and allow to dry.

2. To ensure square placement, draw reference lines on the subfloor using a level and carpenter square. Tile should start in the middle of the room and move out toward the walls, so make your initial reference lines as close to the center as possible.

Mark additional reference lines as space allows, such as 2-foot-by-2-foot squares.

3. Do a test run with your chosen tile by laying it out on the floor. There are color variations in most tile patterns, so you’ll want to verify each tile blends well with the next.

4. Mix tile mortar and use the thin side of a trowel to apply mortar at a 45-degree angle. Use the combed side to spread evenly and return excess mortar to the bucket. Remember to apply mortar in small areas, working as you go, so it doesn’t dry before you’re ready to lay the tile.

5. When laying tile, use your reference lines as guides. Press and wiggle tile slightly for the best adherence.

6. Use spacers to create even lines between one tile and the next, removing excess mortar with a damp sponge or rag.

7. As you complete a section of tile, use a level and mallet to verify the tiles are sitting evenly.

8. Let mortar dry 24 hours before grouting.

9. Remove spacers then apply grout to joints, removing excess as you go.

10. Allow grout to dry per the manufacturer’s instructions then go back over tile with a damp sponge to set grout lines and clean grout residue.

11. Once grout has cured – usually at least a couple weeks – apply sealer to protect it.

Straight Facts About Omega-3s and Heart Health (Family Features) Many people are familiar with omega-3 fatty acids, and some of those at risk for heart disease take them as dietary supplements.

However, according to a Harris Poll commissioned by Amarin Pharma, Inc., some people have limited understanding of the risks and benefits of these dietary supplements.

Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women globally, and risk increases over the age of 45, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, the American Heart Association predicts 45% of the United States population will have some form of cardiovascular disease by 2035.

According to the CDC, people with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke than those without diabetes, and at a younger age. To help counter their risk, almost half (46%) of heart patients and more than one-third of patients with diabetes take omega-3 dietary supplements, according to the poll. Six in 10 of those heart patients and 55% of people with diabetes consulted a health care professional before taking them, but only 45% of the general adult population taking omega-3 dietary supplements has done so.

Among poll respondents who think they are at risk of heart disease, 56% of those taking omega-3 dietary supplements believe they have been proven effective in reducing the risk of (or treating) heart disease, and 44% believe they have been approved by

the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat or prevent heart disease.

However, this is not the case, and they have not been approved or proven effective in preventing disease.

Additionally, while men with diabetes (87%) are more likely than women (73%) to cite obesity as a risk factor, 75% are also more likely to believe fish oil dietary supplements are proven to reduce risk of CVD, compared to 58% of women.

“The volume of misinformation can be overwhelming for the average person who may not know whether or not to use omega-3 dietary supplements, let alone which dosage is optimal,” said R. Preston Mason, Ph.D., member of the cardiovascular division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, president and co-founder of Elucida Research LLC and consultant for Amarin.

“Heart disease and other conditions like diabetes are too risky to leave to unproven products.”

If you currently take or are considering taking omega-3 dietary supplements, Mason recommends arming yourself with information about some commonly held beliefs about omega-3 fatty acids and the risks and benefits of these dietary supplements, especially in relation to heart disease risk.

Better Oral Health May Help Protect Your Heart (Family Features) Many people are aware healthy habits like regular exercise and eating nutritious foods promote better heart health. However, it’s lesser known that your oral health and heart health risk may be connected.

In fact, a study from “Inside Dentistry” suggests as many as 50% of heart attacks may be triggered by an oral infection.

While research continues to fully understand the relationship between oral hygiene and cardiovascular health, studies have revealed correlations between the two. For example, according to a study published in the “European Journal of Preventive Cardiology,” patients with improved oral hygiene had a lower risk for atrial fibrillation and heart failure compared with those with poor oral hygiene.

What’s more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by age 34, approximately 50% of people

have experienced periodontal disease, which suggests a high percentage of the population could benefit from improved oral hygiene and preventative care.

Preventing Cancer

by the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton February is National Cancer Prevention Month.

Research has shown that more than half of all cancers diagnosed in the United States can be attributed to preventable causes – things like smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and excessive exposure to the sun. As a result, steps like not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, protecting your skin from the sun, and getting vaccinated against the viruses that cause certain cancers can dramatically reduce your risk of certain cancers.

Another way you can lower your risk for cancer is by getting screening tests that can help find cancer at an early stage before symptoms appear. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, treatment is more likely to be successful.

By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have grown and spread, making the cancer harder to treat or cure.

The earlier doctors can detect changes in tissue, the better the chances of removing cancer with few complications. Below are five important cancer screenings that can save lives and prevent tumor development.

Colon Cancer A colonoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon). Using a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look at the colon, a colonoscopy helps find ulcers, colon polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding.

During a colonoscopy, tissue samples can be collected and abnormal growths can be taken out.

Skin Cancer A skin cancer screening is a visual inspection of your skin by a medical professional. While screening for skin cancer, your physician may examine all the skin on the body, even places never exposed to the sun, such as the creases beneath the hips, around the genitals, and behind the ears. If an area on the skin looks abnormal, a biopsy is usually done. The doctor will remove as much of the suspicious tissue as possible.

Then a pathologist will look at the tissue under a microscope to check for cancer cells.

widely practiced type of examination of female breasts as a means of detecting pathological changes in the tissue early on. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and is the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.

Prostate Cancer The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer.

The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below a man's bladder. For the test, a blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are usually reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/ mL) of blood.

Cervical Cancer A Pap test is a test of a sample of cells taken from a woman's cervix or vagina during a pelvic exam. The test is used to look for changes in the cells of the cervix or vagina and it is the best

tool to detect precancerous conditions and hidden, small tumors that may lead to cervical cancer.

The article’s premise: “When both a vaccinated and an unvaccinated patient with COVID-19 need the last available bed in a hospital’s intensive care unit, the vaccinated patient should get it. Those who view vaccination as a “personal choice” need to bear personal responsibility for choosing to place others’ lives at risk.” I agree.

The author speaks of a rural Iowa patient who badly needed an operation.

His neighborhood hospital tried in vain to transport him to a larger hospital where this surgery could be performed. Unfortunately, due to an upsurge in Covid cases with almost all hospitalized patients unvaccinated, the surgery could not be performed in time and the patient died. He quotes the patient’s daughter: “The thing that bothers me the most is people’s selfish decision not to get vaccinated and the failure to see how this affects a greater group of people. That’s the part that’s really difficult to swallow.”

In some hospitals up to 98% of admitted Covid patients are unvaccinated. Sure, vaccination may not prevent you from acquiring the Omicron strain, but it could very well keep you out of the hospital so a patient with a non-Covid emergency can receive adequate care.

Oh, and this was a recent Standard Speaker headline: “unvaccinated patients overwhelm Pa hospitals”. Hopefully you are not one of them.

State-of-the-Art Cancer Center Coming to Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Hazleton in 2023 A new state-of-the-art cancer center is coming to Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)– Hazleton in 2023, bringing more leadingedge cancer care services to the local community.

Demolition has begun on the building that formerly housed the Hazleton General Hospital School of Nursing, and an official groundbreaking will take place later this year or early next year. When completed, the new cancer center will have three floors and include physician practices, an infusion center and radiation oncology services. Currently, infusion services are provided at an off-site medical office, and patients needing radiation treatment must travel to other locations.

“The need is very clear, and this

expansion will allow our patients to receive many of their treatments in a centralized location,” says Terrence Purcell, President, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) Northwest Region. “Our community will benefit greatly from this advanced cancer facility, and we are very proud to build upon and enhance the current cancer services we offer.”

Expanded COVID-19 Booster and Third Shot Guidance Pfizer-BioNTech booster approved for children 12-15, third shot available for immunocompromised age 5-11, and all Pfizer boosters available five months after second shot

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued Emergency Use Authorization for several new booster initiatives and a third shot for younger people, which have been supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Booster shots now available for children age 12-15: Children who received the Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot at least five months ago are now eligible for their booster by appointment only at all Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) COVID-19 vaccine clinic locations.

Third shot available for children age 5-11 who are immunocompromised: A third shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine also is available to children between the ages of 5 and 11 who are immunocompromised.

Shorter interval for Pfizer-BioNTech booster: Those who completed the twodose series of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are now eligible for a booster shot five months after their second shot, rather than six months. This change does not apply to people who received the Moderna mRNA vaccine or Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine. Moderna boosters are still recommended six months after the completion of the initial vaccine series.

Those who received an initial single dose of the J&J vaccine should be boosted with either Moderna or Pfizer two months after their initial shot.

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) began offering the boosters and third shots for these age groups on January 6th.

“Preliminary research has shown that booster shots help strengthen our protection against new variants of COVID-19, like omicron,” said J. Nathan Hagstrom, MD, Chief of Pediatrics at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.

The on-going pandemic has pushed many people to their breaking pint. Alcohol sales are up 40%. So clearly, we are all under pressure and we must find ways to relax, not worry, and to still find awe and wonder as we appreciate a sunset or a star-lit might.

So here are my suggestions.

Don’t be addicted to your cell phone. Turn it off as you go for a twomile, daily walk, or read a chapter a day of an up-lifting book. Have a daily conversation with God, it is a joy for me to go to my private office, close the door, get on my knees, and pray for the healing of a patient who is in terrible pain.

Yes, we are to be in this world, but not to be of this world. Where the enticements on TV where people appear to be happy with getting more and more material things makes them excited. The reality is that the more you partake of the luxuries of this world, the more you want, you can’t have it all, and you end up angry and empty.

Tell yourself, less is better. Less tv, less cell phones, less internet, less news, less newspaper. God loves us so much; He cries as he watches all the pain we impose on each other.

Have his eyes, his heart, and you will have peace inside and not get distracted like most people. “I have come to give you life; and to give you life abundantly.”

Fighting The Flu - 3 Tips To Protect Your Health (Family Features) When most people hear about vaccines these days, the first thing that comes to mind is COVID-19.

However, vaccines also help prevent other serious illnesses like the flu, especially for those at higher risk.

According to the American Heart Association, people with underlying risk factors like heart disease, stroke, obesity and diabetes are at high risk of serious flu complications. During the 2018-19 flu season, more than 93% of adults hospitalized for the flu reported at least one underlying medical condition that placed them at high-risk for complications, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Even so, a survey on behalf of the American Heart Association found 3 in 5 U.S. adults may delay or skip the flu shot this year, despite warnings from health experts the influenza season could be severe after a mild 2020-21 flu season.

Knowledge Gap A lack of information may contribute to decisions to skip or delay the flu shot. The survey identified a significant knowledge gap, with an overwhelming majority (94%)

of adults in the United States incorrectly answering at least one of eight questions about the shot. Younger generations were less informed than their older counterparts, but across all age groups, more than half of U.S. adults answered at least two questions incorrectly.

Despite the knowledge gap, some common misconceptions may be fading.

Among all respondents, 73% know you can’t get the flu from the flu shot and 88% know you can get a COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same time.

Flu and Heart Health There is a strong correlation between the flu and cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and stroke. Among adults hospitalized with flu during recent flu seasons, heart disease was one of the most common chronic conditions.

According to the CDC, about half of adults hospitalized with flu have heart disease. In addition, research published in “The New England Journal of Medicine” showed those who are not vaccinated against the flu are six times more likely to have a heart attack within a week of infection.

Preventing the Flu

Take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu this season with these tips from the American Heart Association: • Get your flu shot. Most experts recommend getting your shot early in the season, but it’s not too late to benefit from the protection. The flu shot is available to anyone at least 6 months old. While getting the shot isn’t a guarantee you won’t get the flu, it reduces the chances of contracting a severe case.

• Wash germs away. Washing hands frequently and thoroughly helps reduce the spread of germs, including those that cause viruses like the flu. Also make a point to avoid touching your face, since your nose and mouth are natural entry points for germs.

• Seek medical attention. If you get sick, seeing a doctor can bring relief and help shorten your illness. If the flu is detected early enough, you may be able to take an oral antiviral treatment that reduces the length and severity of your symptoms.
