PROJECT SITE

DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA

SITE ANALYSIS & DESIGN STUDIO INDIVIDUAL WORK

As a fast-growing IT hub, Research Triangle Park (RTP) is located between Durham and Raleigh city in North Carolina. Faster growth epidemically brought several potential developments in the area. New light rail is one of the proposed big projects in Durham. The proposed Light Rail project benefits project site for this studio, as it is located in proximity of 1 mile from one of the major stations. Having a diverse cultural value, the site context gave me the intention to make the center for young generation for different career opportunities. In relation to the Black Wall Street history, the community business incubator offers outdoor as well as indoor areas by reusing the existing building for work and community learning purpose.

A holistic outer to inner approach was adopted for the design process. Where, the neighborhood context of Parrish Street was studied which is known as Black wall Street in the history. The project site is situated in Albright community which has majority of African American population. The idea behind the Black Wall Street history of business growth of black people got combined with existing adjoining parks and recreational center to get the connectivity from the residential area. The design intention was to create 4 zones with designated purpose depended on the site condition.

The design offers multiple entries from all the sides. North side of the site is adjoining to the residential buildings so that side of the design has community activities like community garden and native plant garden with different levels of designed planter. The lawn and plaza are over looking to the existing stream with rain garden to catch the water from North side of the site. Wetland connects to the other lower side of the site from Amphitheater through boardwalk. Community business incubator seeks to welcome more and more people to make connections while enjoying the ecology of swamp landscape features. Open activity areas evoke the creativity of a person.

The Southeast Equine Research and Education Partnership (SEREP) arose from an intentional community-university partnership arrangement between North Carolina State University and Rutherford/Polk counties in the Isothermal region of western North Carolina. The primary goal was to determine how to take advantage of the long standing but burgeoning equestrian culture and economy in the region in a way that would serve the needs of existing communities, attract investment, create new businesses and jobs.

The proposed Southeast Equine Community and Research Center (SECRC) would include a multidisciplinary research hub that would leverage and support the local equine ecosystem and provide opportunities for innovative research, particularly related to the health of horses, humans, and the environment; a community village that provides amenities to enable short and long-term stays for researchers and athletes; a business hive that engages with visitors and community people and enables grassroots equine based economic development.

Proposed Site Access and Main Circulation

The master plan proposes a collaborative learning and research community that promotes innovative center model through learning and shared research facilities; outdoor spaces, as well as social and community spaces. Both indoor and wrap around outdoor spaces are designed and planned spatially to create unique collaborative environments for both local residents, visitors, faculty, and students alike.

Located deeper within the site, on the left section of the site, is the Equine-Assisted Therapy Center /Lab including a building and its outdoor amenities. As an extension of the Research Hub area, the Therapy Center allows for more privacy and security enabling a perfect environment for therapeutic teaching and research activities.

MY ROLE

Site analysis, Future envision, Design strategies , Master plan design & graphics, Perspective views

DesignWeek 2018’s focus is on the Neuse River Watershed, addressing the issues distinctive to each of the three sub-basins identified within the watershed: Upper, Middle, and Lower. In order to sustain and promote the health of the Neuse River watershed, while encouraging further development in both urban and rural communities, the goal is to explore and learn how design can respond to the impact of urban growth, intensive land use practices, and climate change on our shared water resources. Along with the fellow group members our design proposal took place in four phases.

Capital Blvd. and the divergent rail lines have separated the surrounding neighborhoods and are choking natural and developed space along the road.

Pigeon House has been culverted and piped in several places and is facing point and non-point source pollution from upstream.

CHALLENGES

Several areas of Capital Blvd. and surrounding development are in the floodplain and face increased hazards of flood damage.

There are currently no amenities to encourage the ideal development density along the corridor.

ELEVATE

Elevate Capital Blvd. to remove it from the floodplain, remove it as a barrier for people and habitat, and allow for program underneath.

ORGANIZE

Organize future development in a way that reflects the existing grid system of Downtown Raleigh and allows for dense development.

CONNECT

Connect neighborhoods, transit, and habitat in a way that none of them face significant disadvantages.

FIVE STAR HOTEL MOHALI,

CHANDIGARH IN INDIA

B.ARCH - THESIS STUDIO INDIVIDUAL WORK

Mohali is a city and a commercial hub lying adjacent to the city of Chandigarh in Punjab, India. It was officially named after the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, Sahibzada, Ajit Singh (Sas Nagar, later). Mohali forms the tri city along with Chandigarh and Panchkula. The site has its own value of the location. As being in the center of the city and near to the Mohali cricket ground along with the view of valley garden makes it the perfect location for commercial development. The final studio report includes the site and project selection to the site analysis and design development.

Orientation

The building is oriented in North-South direction so that maximum amount of natural light & ventilation can be received along with the view of the city. Also, the design is divided in two categories as per its function: front of the house and back of the house. The central service area which caters to the main reception, the elevators, fire exits & management rooms for easy movement, as it is centrally placed inside the hotel, hence it is easy to reach. The emergency exits are also centrally placed so that the evacuation is fast & easy for all the people inside the building. The whole step garden idea was to give access of terrace gardens to each individual floors which also creates a massive front elevation.

OFFICE WORK EXPERIENCE

LANDSCAPE AESTHETICS

BERNARDSVILLE, NEW JERSEY

Working with Landscape Aesthetics for more than a year has been a great competent learning experience. The company focuses on the high end residential projects in New Jersey. Being a small company, I got my hands a little bit on everything which gave me a new perspective and understanding about working style in the real professional world. Company’s motto was to provide a space which can give them memories of lifetime through design and construction team’s extraordinary skills and efforts. That enhances my approach towards problem-solving techniques. And trained me to cope up with multiple tasks efficiently at the same time.

One of the projects I worked on was situated at the edge of the lake which gave the site a special element to consider in the design process. My responsibilities with this project was to render plans to create the presentation for the clients. Along with that in the second phase, I worked on detail technical drawings. The most challenging part in this project for the whole team was to get required approvals for permits from the municipality and DEP (Department of Environment Protection).

ACQUIRED WORK SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Over the of time working in the office environment gave me the opportunity to learn every small details of the professional world. Being in a small company proved to be an advantage for me as a part of my first job in the landscape architecture field. Handling multiple project sites at a time helped me achieved above mentioned skills and experience to improve my expertise.
