STUDIO PROCESS Greetings!

A studio starts with a plan. It’s a framework for the experiences that both students and teachers will have: it describes what sort of learning will take place, how it will take place, when it will take place, and why it will be valuable. The plan for this studio since the beginning has been about pushing how a volumetric approach to design is crucial in crafting spatial experience. This premise developed itself into two projects that was structured across the semester. The first exercise was developed as a test-bed to explore ideas and narratives that could help speculate an architectural scenario in the urban setting. The design brief for this exercise looked at ideas established in the domain through the writings of John Hejduk in setting up an ‘architectural masquerade’.

The ‘Pointless Diagrams’, thus, helped the student in positioning their ideas on how and what determines a campus. The studio did take this idea further and developed an exercise of exploring the idea of a campus through ‘Fun and Frolic’ in architecture. ‘Once Upon a Time in the Park’, as the exercise was called, probed the volumetric approach to design and develop new forms of connectivity between objects, forms, entities and subjects in establishing spatial boundaries and their dissolution, if needed.

What made this process exciting for us, was to actively pursue a possible telescoping of student inquiry and speculations from the minor to major project, and to seek a non-linear method of design development. The studio did emphasise on spatial connections, the crafting of spatial grandeur, the idea of public vs private and the numerous thresholds that help in developing the same through various methods. Digital methods were strongly encouraged from an initial stage of design process, and this, we reckon, helped a seamless transition from a physical to virtual studio that was forced due to the current pandemic.

This book provides a curated collection of such projects from this studio that express a set of distinctive ideas/ approach/ narratives of the students from semester 6 (Section B), 2020 at R V College of Architecture. We do hope that this curated collection of projects from the studio offers a glimpse into the intellectual premise of each student’s proposal and amplifies the approach of our studio.

The Masque, a dramatic entertainment with no preconceived narrative action, climax, or ending that flour¬ished in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England, attempted the process of “spell-binding” the space (as in a ritual dance) by means of a number of “subjects” and corresponding “objects” that denote an imaginary habitat. The true face of the Masque shows architecture as an impossible representation of the fundamental and primitive space of “dwelling,” revealing the essence of architecture as a dead matrix we need to animate.

John Hejduk attempted one such exercise, to craft a Masque at Hanover, in a bid to negotiate the hard boundaries around the sites to form new sequences, over time and allow transformation for smaller islands within, to be removed from any sense of scale or reference.

These islands, although located between building and subject, is a heuristic model of island organizations that transcend scale. Hejduk’s drawings exemplify the individual transients that gather to generate the collective. Consider a speculative re-distribution of the smaller islands into a grid-iron structure for the collective: detached from their original relationship with one another, and you notice the smaller islands begin to relinquish their respective autonomies and form a new taxonomy of parts.

The logic of this concoction, in which new forms of connectivity between objects, forms, entities, and subjects begin to emerge within hard boundaries, is the precursor to what the “Red Follies” did for Bernard Tschumi’s Parc de la Villette or the “preservation islands” did for Rem Koolhaas’s proposal for La Defense. Recent re­search in architecture has generated inquiries into a dissolution of boundaries, which has been countered time and again by a search for limits and definitions of edges and borders. The desires for inter-connectivity, inde­terminacy or multiplicity, has been questioned by privatized, single-use programs with a renewed interest on their impact on the collective. These fragments and their existence in the collective is the interest of this studio.

This project will speculate on such fragments, that pre-suppose a totality (either lost or promised), to which they belong, to craft a narrative of a heterotopia, in the urban realm. The diagrams, models, and the visuals will telescope into the larger idea of dealing with ‘Hybrid Typologies’ as the collective.

The drawings appear meaningful without actually being helpful. Some might seem to reference real things or show some sort of relationship between things, but this is merely accidental.

ARTIFICIAL EXCAVATIONS Through a series of geometrical explorations came about the idea of artificial excavation of Jantar Mantar, Jaipur. Artificial mounds have been created and raised to a height above eye level, such that it creates a defined entry and exit on the site.

The mounds form to provide a direction of entry and exit. They act as a barrier that restricts the visitors’ view.

As the instrument is approached, it transforms into a gateway of sorts which provides a direct view on the instrument.

AATHMANI Aathmani in Sanskrit means ‘Believe In Self Essence’. In life, the word aathmani plays a major role. A similar idea can be attributed to this proposal, wherein the forms, volumes and the spaces symbolize the same. This project emphasizes the directionality and the fluidic nature of the wall around which the volumes organise themselves. The triangular slope shows the essence of the ‘JANTAR MANTAR’ and the arch in the center is dedicated to the rich heritage of Jaipur.

PERSISTENCE IN FORM A spatial experience has been developed with cylinders and a ramp. All the cylinders vary in diameters and heights and few have voids. Persistence in form is shown through these variations along with scale and proportion.

MOVEMENT: POINTS,LINES,PLANES,VOLUMES Astronomy involves the movement of celestial objects. To establish a correlation between the fields of astronomy and architecture, the concept of movement was brought into the latter, using different sculptural elements and a play with light and shadow.A point moves to form a line; A-line moves to form a plane; A plane moves to form a volume. Therefore, these elements were put together to form a composition.

The various planes intersect with the volumes and split them, resulting in interesting spaces. The compositions of Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, and Kazmir Malevich served as inspirations since they had a three- dimensional interpretation of their 2D paintings.

The design incorporates straight lines, cylinders, cubes, and cuboids; and merged elements like cranes, tension cables, concrete blocks, and steel girders. This design is inspired by constructivism which is a form of modern architecture that developed in the soviet union in the 1920s (Russia). Once Upon Time In Park Public or City Activity Precincts are the armature of any city. If you were to go to the rear of the VITM, skirting the Aquarium, there is an undefined precinct which has the BAL BHAVAN & the TOY TRAIN. On any day & more particularly on a weekend you will see in this precinct a motley crowd of primarily children & adults, families, children on a school trip, out of town tourists, anxious grandparents, eager parents, siblings, young adults & also flaneurs! The precinct stretches no more than three-quarters of a kilometer, a sort of undefined area in which there is even now a semblance of frolic activity, balloon sellers, toy sellers, water bottle sellers, & an occasional napper.

The intent of this project is to expand on this activity, make it more systematic, more adventurous, more city-centric, more organized, with more facilities, so that visitors & the citizenry can part take in a variety of activities that the program & the project is designed for…..here everyone gets to play, read, observe, meet, ride the train, spin on the Ferris wheel, study plants, learn at workshops, watch a play, act in it, conduct experiments in workshops, sample good & healthy food at cafeterias, learn about ecology & the environment, do birdwatching, watch a film, stay in a dormitory if you are on an extended trip, join the astronomy club & watch stars & marvel at the universe……. Age group/4-90 years!

SHAPING THE WAY Taking inspiration from the minor project, the idea was to make use of simple shapes and numerous openings create spaces for children to run around, hide, and play in. The use of color was also made to add to the playfulness of the structure. These shapes around the building act as elements such as openings, staircases, corridors, ventilators, etc.

Also, the openings usings these shapes are of different sizes which adds to the experience of the space.

For example, certain openings are only big enough for the children to pass through. The functional spaces around the site are placed in three different blocks, each catering to a certain kind of audience. These blocks each opens to a courtyard and are connected by a series of pathways, running across courtyards.

AN EDIFICE OF ORIGAMI Looking back at minor project ‘ Artificial excavations of Jantar Mantar ‘, this project looks at exploring the ideas of fold in the form. The folds intend to create an interesting experience throughout the site.

The program is divided into two main blocks : -- Administration and commute -- Public activities (cinema, theatre, etc) The central outdoor space becomes a common space of congregation for stalls, workshops, street sellers, street performance and theatre acts.

YUKTA RUPAKA The project is a campus engaging both adults and kids in different ways. Yukta Rupaka is a Sanskrit word meaning a ‘ Fit metaphor’. The entire project is mainly about using the basic elements of a slide as both, an experiential metaphor as well as a visual metaphor.

EUPHORIA THROUGH A MINIATURE UTOPIA EUPHORIA is a place of happiness designed mainly to attract kids but engage the elders as well. This is a Centre for Environmental Studies where learning is through fun. The whole idea was to attract people from the outside through the form and make it contrasting and exciting on the inside. Main point taken from the minor project- Units connected with an intangible idea of an axis. Through the process, the idea of persistence through flow is shown keeping the overall idea as parametric and soft forms.

VOLUMES IN WONDERLAND The theme of the MINOR project was “POINTS, LINES, PLANES, VOLUMES” and this has been continued into the Major project. Russian constructivist and suprematist paintings were referred to, to understand the composition of shapes and volumes, and one particular painting, “PROUN 19D” by EL LISSITZKY has been taken as a major source of inspiration for this particular project.

Another theme that has been integrated into the design is “ALICE IN WONDERLAND”, to add a more playful, whimsical element to the campus since the major target visitors are children. This has been exhibited in the portals spread across the campus, with openings of various sizes and also the varying heights and diameters of the follies, in order to play with scales and light and shadow.

The superlong elements on the campus are the train tracks and walkways which extend across the length of the entire site.

TRAINS ON CRANES- CONSTRUCTIVISM

Constructivist architecture emerged from the wider constructivist art movement, which grew out of Russian Futurism. The main characteristic of constructivism was the application of 3D cubism to abstract and nonobjective elements. The style incorporated straight lines, cylinders, cubes, and rectangles; and merged elements of the modern age such as radio antennae, tension cables, concrete frames, and steel girders.

The possibilities of modern materials were also explored, such as steel frames that supported large areas of glazing.

MINIATURE UTOPIA Concept The idea of stair and bridges (connecting spaces) has been incorporated from the minor project concept called ‘metro’.These connecting spaces act as a significant part of the whole in terms of socializing and joyousness in children gathering campus.

Characters Of The Design: usage of pergolas- intended to give the sense of lightness effect visually concerning the heavy solid blocks.

Fun elements- an observatory tower in the northwest adds up as a fun element along with the train track that runs in the periphery of the built spaces.
