I wish I would have called sooner‌. families, caregivers, and providers, I have identified some potential barriers to seeking and accepting hospice services. One of the largest barriers and misconceptions is that accepting hospice means giving up and that death is imminent. News flash‌we are all dying. Death does not discriminate. We live in an age of vast medical advancements but even so, we are not invincible. So what happens when the medication isn’t working anymore or when surgery is not an option? Are we giving up? I talk to patients and families frequently about reframing their thought process. We are not giving up, but we do need to redefine our goals and expectations. Another phrase I hear people say is “we were told there is nothing else to do.â€? There are many things that we can do! The goals must change from curing or fixing a condition to making sure the patient is comfortable, well palliated, and well supported. Those are actions and interventions, although not what we tend to think of as modern medicine. It is well documented that people often live longer with hospice care versus without hospice care. They live longer despite stopping the unnecessary medications and opting for staying home for management instead of going back in the hospital. The course is set, so the question becomes “How do you want to spend the rest of your time, however long that may be?â€? Most people tell me that they want to spend it at
These are words that I hear from Hospice of the Panhandle patients and their families on a regular basis. Once enrolled in hospice services, many people are surprised by the support, resources, and education they receive. They are often overwhelmed with relief and comfort knowing that they or their loved one has 24-hour access to nursing and physician services, that aides can assist with bathing and other personal care needs, that medications, equipment, and medical supplies are provided, that spiritual and bereavement resources are available, that volunteers are able to assist in a broad range of services, that social services are available to assist with financial concerns or help achieve unmet goals, that they will be cared for in the home setting as long as possible and that Hospice of the Panhandle’s Inpatient Facility is an available alternative to going to the hospital if needed. So, why not call sooner? Through my experience and interactions with patients,
home, comfortable, surrounded by friends and family. That is not giving up. It is simply choosing a different “treatment plan.� Last year, Hospice of the Panhandle served 977 people from all walks of life in four counties. The average length of stay for patients with a non-cancer diagnosis was 87 days and for cancer diagnoses was 51 days. The point being, hospice is not just for the final days of life! People should reap the benefits from hospice services for weeks to months and not hours to days. In 2016, 33 patients “graduated� from hospice services because their condition improved! I encourage patients, families, friends, and providers to consider hospice as the next plan of treatment and not the act of giving up. Choose comfort and quality for yourself, your loved one, or your patient when nature has decided that quantity of life is becoming shorter. Allow time to fully benefit from all that hospice has to provide on this part of the journey. Sarah Phillips has been medical director at Hospice of the Panhandle for four years. Healthy Berkeley, Martinsburg Farmers Market Announce Walk With A Doc Program
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Healthy Berkeley and the Martinsburg Farmers Market are sponsoring a new walking program. Walk with a Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle and, at the same time, have the opportunity to have questions answered by local physicians. According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. With a doctor’s okay, walking is safe for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions, and those who are more than 20% overweight. In addition, research has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise. h The next Walk with a Doc will be held on June 16 at 4:30pm in the square in downtown Martinsburg. Sarah Moerschel, MD, board certified pediatrician with Harpers Ferry Family Medicine, will lead the walk.
Meet at the square at 4:30pm with the 1 mile walk to start at 4:45pm. Walk with a Doc will be held the 3rd Friday of the month at 4:30pm throughout the summer in conjunction with the Martinsburg Farmers Market. Dine at Applebee’s in Charles Town the first Thursday of each month from 11:00 a.m. until closing and Applebee’s will donate 20% of your bill to the Animal Welfare Society. Enjoy an evening of delicious food and help the shelter dogs and cats that are waiting for new homes. The Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit, no-kill shelter and United Way agency located on Leetown Pike near the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. While there are many reasons to love summer, it is an unfortunate reality that dog bites occur more often in the summer months than any other time of year. The good news is that you can prevent most dog bites with the right information. Review these tips to ensure a safer summer with your dogs! About half of all dog bites involve a child under the age of 12 years. Teach your children how to recognize the signs of protective and fearful body language in dogs. A child should never approach or handle a dog displaying fearful or protective body language. Make sure your children know what to do if a strange dog approaches them. Instruct children not to run, but walk to a safe place. Everyone, regardless of age, should also practice how to “be a tree” when a dog is acting aggressively. Children can also “be a tree” any time a dog is playing too rough.
