Some good news in our world today There’s a lot to worry about these days, and that’s before your doctor tells you that you or your loved one is terminally ill. The weather is crazy. West Virginia leads the nation in prescription drug abuse. No one seems to agree on how to provide excellent healthcare and education to the majority of Americans. Disrespect toward the police concerns some, while others still find themselves victims of racism. Bureaucracy crowds out common sense. Medical professionals in hospitals, home health agencies and physicians’ offices often now spend 25 percent of their time with patients, while spending 75 percent of their time documenting what they’ve observed. What may be considered a peaceful protest to you could very well be considered an obstructionist behavior Emunah Herzog to your neighbor. And all of this before your cardiologist tells you that your heart’s worn out, your pulmonologist advises you’ve got end-stage lung disease, or your oncology team admits defeat after many grueling months of chemotherapy and radiation. “Hey, wait a minute,” you say as you read this article. “Weren’t you going to talk about good news?” I’ve been a nurse with the Jefferson County team at Hospice of the Panhandle for more than five years, and as I drive throughout the region, I observe homes where families have loved and cared for terminally ill loved ones, and come through for each other in heartbreakingly beautiful ways. As I drive, I observe the home where the 92-year-old man took care of his wife who was in the final stages of dementia. They’d been married nearly 70 years. When we cared for them, on most days, she didn’t even recognize her high school sweetheart. When I offered our hospice aides to help her bathe, he sweetly smiled and said, “It’s OK;I can do it. She’s very private, you know.” Then I see the home of the 61-year-old musician. He was riddled with cancer. He lived by himself in a tiny apartment. Toward the end of his life, he was too weak to get up from his recliner, but he begged to stay in his home to die. His buddies from the weekly jam took turns sleeping on the couch, faithfully following the hospice nurses’ instructions. Skin color was no issue for them; they only wanted to take the best care of their friend. There’s the home where the 54-year-old woman lay dying. She worried so much about finances. But her husband’s boss paid him his full salary and benefits, despite the fact that the husband stayed at home to care for her during her last days. And there’s the house of the 78-year-old woman. Her lung disease left her so compromised that she couldn’t speak a full sentence without gasping for breath. Her son had died of a heroin overdose, so she had a great deal of fear to overcome when it came to taking morphine for her shortness of breath. But once she overcame that fear and agreed to take small doses, she stopped struggling to breathe. She was able to lean back on her recliner and tenderly caress her toddler grandchild as he wiggled on her lap. When I was a young nurse, most people were afraid to talk about death. New technologies were hailed. While these could save lives in some instances, I witnessed many terminally ill patients suffering on artificial life support or dying in misery from side effects of yet another round of toxic drugs instead of receiving comfort care. These days, for every home where dysfunction hinders the care of a dying person, I see at least 10 where people rise to a level of heroism in caring for their families, friends and neighbors. Frequently, I am deeply moved by the love we hospice workers get to witness and the compassion we get to offer to yesterday’s strangers. Kindness matters much more than reading the paper or watching TV leads us to believe, and from where I stand, there is far more right with humanity than is wrong. How is that for good news? Emunah Herzog has been a nurse at Hospice of the Panhandle for five years. Hospice is a not-for-profit agency that has cared for patients and families in Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire and Jefferson counties since 1980. For more information on services hospice provides, call (304) 264-0406 visit on-line at www.hospiceotp.org

Families must emphasize cyber awareness to stay safe

T

he internet can be an invaluable resource that has forever changed the way people live their lives. But the ever-changing internet can be a safety risk, and families must always be on guard to keep themselves safe. The potential dangers of the internet can affect both children and adults. Here are some ways families can protect themselves and still get the most out of the web.

Set up filters

Many devices come with security features and filters that can limit access to certain content. Limits can be established based on age or even by preventing access to specific websites. Whenever a new app is installed, parents should read through the usage information and peruse the security settings. This is especially important for social apps. Restrict who can access account information or profiles by toggling between “public” and “private” in the settings when applicable. Filtering software can be used for streaming movies. ClearPlay, for example, can be set to remove certain parameters, like nudity, sexual dialogue and profanity.

Recognize cyberbullying

Instances of cyberbullying have grown alongside the popularity of the internet. Cyberbullies tease and taunt through email, social media and other online modes of communication. The organization NoBullying says that 52 percent of young people in the United Kingdom report being cyberbullied, but many will not confide in their parents when the abuse occurs. More

than half of young people in North America also have experienced cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can take many forms, including sending mean messages or threats, spreading rumors, posting hurtful messages on social media, stealing account information, sending damaging messages, and circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages about a person. Anyone, regardless of age, who spends time on social media can fall victim to cyberbullying. By blocking people and limiting the amount of personal information they share online, individuals can reduce the likelihood that they will be victimized by cyberbullies.

Understand digital permanence

Many people do not fully grasp that the internet creates a trail of information that never really goes away. Computer security experts warn that what goes on the internet tends to stay on the internet, even when one thinks he or she has deleted it. What’s more, a person can never verify if a person has made a copy of a post or a picture and saved it. Images, opinions and more can come back to haunt people who post them online. Stop and think before putting information online. If users might one day be uncomfortable discussing something they shared online, then they should resist the temptation to share it in the first place. Many families rely on the internet every day. Families should always give careful consideration to the information they share online, holding back any details that might be private or put their security at risk.

Preserve family memories for years to come F amilies enjoy many moments together throughout the years. However, in today’s digital world, quite often those experiences fail to see the light of day past an initial tweet or Instagram post. Too often file upon file remains in a digital graveyard on a mobile phone or external hard drive. Instead of letting photos, videos, drawings, and memorabilia from vacations and other family experiences linger unappreciated, families can preserve these memories. Explore the various ways to share occasions with others.

Photo books

Don’t procrastinate and let photo files pile up. Promptly upload them to your favorite photo printing site or bring them to a retailer that has photo machines, such as a nearby pharmacy. Such businesses routinely offer coupons and steep discounts on photo books. The software is user-friendly, and, in a week or two, you can have a photo book ready to go. This is less timeconsuming than making photo albums, printing photos and then placing them behind plastic-lined pages. The photo

book software also may include background designs and funny captions to help customize pages even further.

Photo collage

If you are a purist and like to have photo prints in hand, then have several of a particular occasion made and then attach them to a decorative piece of wood. Using a decoupage product or a shellac, coat the collage so that it can be preserved. Hang your collage as a piece of handmade artwork on display.

Artwork gallery

Children routinely bring home artwork they made in school, daycare and other organized classes. Sometimes these items get stashed in plastic containers that are ultimately stored in attics or basements, only to be “discovered” years later. Rather than relegating them to storage, invest in frames of various sizes and hang the pictures as if they were in an art gallery. Make sure the frames are easy to access so that the artwork can be swapped out periodically. Kids will take pride in sharing their creations with family and visitors.

Keep a journal

Another way to preserve memories is to write down experiences. Each member of the family can fill out a page with a special recollection of a trip or another momentous day. Keep the journal on a coffee table so it can be reviewed every so often. Save it and gift it to future generations. Family memories are worth keeping and sharing. There are many ways to display photos, thoughts and other sentiments from special events.

The family that plays together... Ah, the family vacation - the source of some of our fondest memories, both as kids and as parents. s a result of the economic downturn that began in 2008, many families found themselves forgoing traditional vacations in favor of “staycations.” In such instances, families spent time away from work and school together but did not travel far, if at all. While the economy has bounced back since the dawn of the staycation, many families are still choosing to stay at home in an effort to save money. Staycations might not seem as glamorous as traveling abroad or as relaxing as spending a week in an oceanfront resort or condominium, but there are ways for families to make staycations more fun and seem like a true departure from everyday life. Experiment with new cuisine. One of the joys of travel is the opportunity to dine out and experience cuisine native to particular locales. But families don’t need to travel abroad to enjoy this particular benefit of traveling. The internet is home to a wealth of recipes from countries far and wide. Parents and their kids can choose recipes online and prepare meals from a different country each night, or pick a “country or region of the week” and prepare a different dish native to that area each night. Camp out. Straying from the norm, even when staying at home, can make staycations seem more like a vacation

than merely a week away from school or the office. Parents who want to add a dash of adventure to their families’ staycations can set up tents in the backyard and sleep under the stars or seek out local campsites that are free or relatively inexpensive. Tell stories around a backyard firepit when staying at home to provide a more authentic camping experience for everyone. Take in local culture. Rather than spending the week lounging around the house or the backyard pool, families can explore the cultural opportunities in their towns or cities. Busy families tend to take such opportunities for granted when they get caught up in the daily grind, and exploring local history and artistic opportunities in the same way you would when traveling can provide a sense of excitement similar to that experienced during more traditional vacations. Visit a local zoo, take in a performance at a local theater company or take a guided historical tour of an area of your hometown or a nearby city.

Indulge in an extraordinary activity. While families typically choose staycations to save money, forgetting the budget to enjoy one extraordinary activity can make a staycation more fun and memorable.

How to keep children of all ages safe • Install safety gates at the top and bottom of all staircases. • Install window guards to prevent window falls. • Visit only those playgrounds that have installed shockabsorbing surfaces beneath the play equipment.

Water accidents

N

ew and experienced parents alike must keep many things in mind when welcoming a child into their homes. Babies do not come with instruction manuals, but kids of all ages need their parents to perform various functions, including keeping them safe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says unintentional injuries, or those that result from burns, falls, poisoning, road traffic, and drowning, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in the United States. But even injuries that do not result in fatalities can still be serious. An estimated 9.2 million children per year visit hospital emergency rooms for unintentional injuries. For children 12 months old and younger, falls account for more than half of the nonfatal injuries.

Child safety is not an issue to take lightly, and parents and other caregivers must remain up-to-date on the latest guidelines regarding safeguarding children. The following are some safety tips and areas of concern parents may want to pay particular attention to.

Falls

As children learn to move around their world, stumbles are to be expected. However, there are steps parents can take to minimize injuries. • Keep babies and young kids strapped and secured when using infant seats, swings, car seats, and strollers. Always keep the devices close to the ground, and not placed on top of a table or other furniture.

A child can drown in mere inches of water. As a result, parents must be extremely diligent to prevent accidents. • Never leave a

child unattended around any source of water, even for just a few seconds. • Empty all tubs, containers, and kiddie pools of water immediately after use. • Use locks to seal toilet lids, and keep doors to bathrooms closed. • Install fences around home pools. Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. • Always test the temperature of bath water to ensure it is comfortable and will not scald a child.

Toys

Toys are a part of a child’s life, and they should bring joy, not danger. • Keep a child’s age in mind when

purchasing a toy or game. • Small toy parts can pose as choking hazards for young children, so inspect toys frequently for chips. • Each year in the United States, more than 2,800 kids are treated in emergency rooms after swallowing button batteries. Keep the following away from young children: remote controls, singing greeting cards, digital scales, watches, hearing aids, thermometers, children’s toys, calculators, key fobs, t-light candles, and flashing holiday jewelry or decorations.

Risks for older kids

As children age, the ways to protect them change. The National Children’s Advocacy Center suggests these guidelines. • Parents should learn all they can about their children’s activities and friends. • Teach children to refuse anything from strangers. • The buddy system is a good idea when walking home from school or other events. • Make sure kids know that strangers can be found online, too. Teach kids to avoid sharing personal information with individuals they meet on social media. • Develop a family safety plan for meeting up when outside of the home.

Convertibles

maintain their popularity

F

or many people, warm weather road trips are most enjoyable when taking to the road in a convertible. Fans of convertibles find few things can compare to the wind blowing in their hair and the sun shining on their faces on a beautiful day. The concept of a convertible is nothing new. In fact, convertibles can be traced to some of the earliest vehicles, which were built without tops and based on the design of horse and carriages. The first closed vehicle was manufactured in 1910, and the first retractable hardtop vehicle system was unveiled in 1922. Peugeot claims to be the first manufacturer of power-operated retractable hardtops, which appeared in 1934. Many other auto manufacturers soon followed suit. Plus, cloth tops were introduced in addition to the hard top varieties. People are attracted to convertibles for many reasons. Appearance and the feeling of connection to the outdoors are two of the most popular reasons for driving convertibles. However, the same attributes that draw some people to convertibles may deter others. Many assumptions and criticisms about convertible cars are exaggerated and could incorrectly paint these vehicles in a negative light. Functionality is one common knock on convertibles. Convertibles certainly are at their best during warm weather, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be driven in different seasons. Many modern convertibles feature cabins that are well insulated. With the top up, a person can feel just as comfortable as in other vehicles. Safety is another concern with regard to convertibles, but modern technology has done much to make convertibles safer. While there is the rare possibility in a rollover incident that convertibles could land on the open top, maintaining the speed limit and driving defensively can reduce the risk of accident. Many modern convertibles are modeled on coupes or hatchbacks that would ordinarily have a static roof. To compensate for the roof removal, reinforcements to the pillars and the chassis, as well as rollover bars or other safety features in handling and stability to drastically reduce rolling risk, are included. Convertibles can be enjoyed regardless of where drivers live. According to Forbes magazine, although 23 percent of convertibles are owned by those in California or Florida, the top five markets in the United States also include colder cities like New York and Chicago.

Did you know?

Car buyers may find some great deals by using offered rebates. Rebates can take place at any time of the year. Dealers typically use rebates in order to clear out a particular model year. Rebates may also be offered through the manufacturer. Dealerships may sell a vehicle for less when certain incentives are applied. Shoppers can rely on Edmunds.com to search for rebates and incentives by vehicle make and geographic location.
