Find the best bank for you

Some people may not give much thought to where they do their banking, but much like no two account holders are the same, no two banks are the same, either. That reality only highlights the importance men and women must place on finding a bank that best suits their particular needs. Individuals hoping to find the best bank for their needs can consider a host of factors before deciding just where it is they will be depositing their money in the years to come.

• Accessibility: Accessibility is many individuals’ biggest priority when it comes to finding a bank. Large banks tend to have more local branches and ATMs, and such banks tend to be in more regions of the country as well. Men and women who travel for business or even young people who go to school away from home may want to find a bank with a more national presence, as that can make it easier to deposit and withdraw money. If you don’t travel much and only seem to withdraw money within your community, then a smaller, local bank, which should be able to offer the same direct deposit services as its larger competitors, may be what you’re looking for. • Capability: Some people prefer to have all of their financial needs catered to by the same bank. This means a bank that can manage your investments, provide a line of credit and secure home, vehicle or education loans. Larger banks tend to offer the widest array of services, and such banks also may have more advanced

technology that makes it easier to manage all of your accounts. Smaller banks may be just as versatile with regard to their capabilities, so don’t judge a book by its cover. • Balances: Banks typically require account holders maintain a minimum balance on both their checking and savings accounts. If you think it may be difficult for you to maintain a higher balance, find a bank that offers accounts with a low minimum balance so you don’t end up paying penalties just to spend your own money. • Fees: Even accounts that are advertised as “free” tend to come with fees that are listed in the fine print. For example, a “free” checking account may only be free if account holders maintain a minimum balance of $1,000 or more. Should that balance dip below the predetermined minimum, account holders are then subject to costly fees. Choosing a bank is an important decision, and identifying your needs is a great way to make the best decision possible.

Did You Know?

According to Bank of America, a home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is a line of credit secured by a homeowner’s home. The HELOC is a revolving credit line, which means it allows homeowners to borrow up to the credit limit amount and re-borrow in repeated transactions once the outstanding balance has been repaid. A HELOC may have a lower interest rate than other types of loans, and BoA notes that interest paid on a HELOC is often tax-deductible. Not every homeowner is eligible for a HELOC. To be eligible, homeowners must have available equity in their homes. That means the amount they owe on their homes must be less than the value of the home. Before applying for a HELOC, homeowners should know that just because they were approved for a mortgage does not mean they will be approved for a HELOC. Lenders will examine many of the same variables, including credit score, monthly income and employment history, when weighing whether or not to approve a HELOC. Successfully switch auto insurance providers

Once drivers purchase an auto insurance policy, many simply let the policy renew each year. But with a little digging, drivers may be able to reduce their insurance costs considerably. According to the Insurance Information Institute in New York, consumers should ask themselves if they’re happy with the cost, service and coverage of their existing policies whenever it’s time to renew. If they are, they should stick with their existing policies. However, if customers feel things can be better, then it’s a perfect time to see what’s available. Many driver advocates advise shopping for a new policy every two or three years. When it comes time to switch car insurance companies, follow these steps and remember to avoid gaps in the coverage. • Compare apples to apples. When shopping for new policies, consumers should compare the same features offered by various providers, including coverage types, deductibles and any limits. Keep a copy of your existing policy’s declarations page so that all quotes can be accurately compared to the existing policy. • Research any cancellation fees. Before switching over, find out if there are any cancellation fees associated with an existing

policy. • Eliminate coverage gaps. Eliminate gaps in coverage by ensuring a new policy begins the moment the existing one ends. This prevents potential financial ruin should a driver get into an accident without any insurance during a gap period. • Take note of any lifestyle changes. Be sure to list anything that can affect the cost of coverage, such as anti-theft devices on the vehicle, window etching or updated driving habits. • Explore union or group affiliations. Drivers who are members of particular clubs, professional organizations or something similar may be eligible for special policies with certain providers. Make a list of any affiliations and contact the organizers to see if they have relationships with auto insurance providers. Law enforcement personnel or veterans may be eligible for certain discounts as well. Some insurance carriers only cover police officers or former military. It pays to look into these discounts. • Consider small companies. Just because they don’t advertise as much as some of the more well-known providers does not mean small insurance companies are not capable of providing sufficient, affordable coverage. There are plenty of reputable small companies that offer excellent rates to drivers willing to exercise their due diligence. • Check with the existing provider, too. Drivers can discuss their current rates and coverage with their existing insurance company, who may offer suggestions on reducing coverage or even offer lower prices in an effort to hang on to customers. Consider these possibilities before switching. Shopping around for a new automotive insurance policy may help customers cut rates and increase coverage.

Prospective borrowers can take several steps to earn lower interest rates when applying for loans. Lenders consider a host of factors when determining interest rates for their borrowers. Some of these factors are market-based, while others are determined by the United States Federal Reserve. But borrowers are not helpless when it comes to securing low interest rates. The down payment amount as well as borrowers’ credit scores and histories can help or hurt them when it comes to interest rates. For example, the larger the down payment a potential home buyer is willing to put down to buy a home, the more likely that borrower earns a lower interest rate from his or her bank. That’s because the bank sees borrowers who are willing to put down a substantial sum of their own money as highly likely to repay the loan in full and on time. In addition, borrowers with strong credit histories and high credit scores have already demonstrated their ability to repay their debts, and that reputation often benefits them in the form of lower interest rates on major purchases like homes and automobiles. Borrowers also may be able to secure low interest rates if they are willing to repay loans quickly. The shorter the duration to maturity, the smaller the interest rate may be. That’s because banks see longterm loans as less likely to be repaid than short-term loans.

Types of insurance policies you should have Insurance is an essential safety net that helps people protect themselves from financial ruin. While many policy holders hope they never have to make a claim, no adult is immune to accident, injury or other unforeseen circumstances, which only emphasizes the need for various types of insurance. The following are various types of insurance policies that all adults should have. • Health: Health care costs are considerable and don’t figure to decrease anytime soon. Denying company-sponsored coverage or refusing to get personal coverage, which now incurs a fee for residents of the United States, puts men and women in potentially precarious positions that can greatly affect both their physical and financial health. A simple broken bone may cost five figures to treat and heal. Without insurance, men and women are on their own to pay that bill. But those with insurance will pay considerably less, as their insurance companies will pay the vast majority of the bill. • Auto: Drivers need auto insurance to protect their finances should they get in an accident and cause harm to themselves or

others. Even if your car has seen better days and appears to be on its last legs, resist the temptation to purchase bare bones coverage. Such policies potentially put you at the mercy of other drivers and their insurance companies if you are found to be at-fault in an accident. • Long-term disability: Few people can afford to stop working for lengthy periods of time. But illness or injury can happen at any time, and adults must have long-term disability insurance to protect themselves should they develop illnesses or suffer injuries that prevent them from working. Long-term disability insurance allows you to maintain the standard of living you have grown accustomed to during your recovery process. • Life: While some people can get by without life insurance, if you have dependents, life insurance is a necessity to protect your loved ones from financial hardship should you pass away. Consult your financial planner to determine the type of life insurance policy and the amount of coverage that is most suitable for you.

Managing money can be a daunting task. Monitoring retirement and investment accounts can sometimes seem like a full-time job, and that’s in addition to the responsibilities many men and women already face with regards to their careers and families. Financial planners can help men and women navigate the plan for retirement and help them prepare for unforeseen events that can affect their finances. • Choose a certified planner. Many financial professionals claim to be planners, but only

those men and women who are certified financial planners, or CFPs, are licensed and regulated. CFPs must take various classes with regard to financial planning and pass an exam administered by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. • Consider how a CFP earns his or her living. How a CFP earns his or her living is another factor to consider. Commissionbased financial planners earn commissions when buying or selling a stock, while feebased planners earn a percentage of your annual assets. Many people starting out prefer planners who earn hourly fees, feeling that such a pay structure makes them more comfortable and gives them time to build up a relationship with their planners. • Work with a fiduciary. Financial planners are held to two standards: the fiduciary standard and the suitability standard. The latter requires that planners give advice that suits investors’ objectives, while the former requires planners to give advice that puts their clients’ best interests ahead of their own. • Be wary of boasts. Some planners will try to impress prospective clients with boastful talk of beating the market.

Steps involved with estate planning

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly. Getting started Estate planning should begin early in a person’s life, especially for young parents. It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your

children should you die while they are still minors. Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms. The will A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially life-altering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will. Medical directives In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity. Funeral arrangements Another aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members. Estate planning is a process that is difficult to discuss, but one that is essential to maximize your assets and ensure your end-of-life wishes are honored.

Did You Know? Financial experts advise that individuals and families save enough money to cover at least six months’ worth of expenses in the case of an emergency or unforeseen layoff. Others say that savings should be closer to a year’s worth of expenses. In spite of the obvious benefits of having a financial safety net, many people continue to live paycheck to paycheck, either voluntarily or out of necessity. According to Pitney Bowes, a document management services company, and Bankrate.com, many people fall well below the benchmarks suggested for savings accounts, checking accounts, 401(k) plans, and other means of building nest eggs. Data suggests the average American has anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 in savings and between $2,000 and $4,500 in checking accounts. In 2011, the Digerati Life, a resource to help people make smart financial choices, found that 50 percent of American households didn’t even have a retirement account, while a little more than 7 percent did not have a bank account.
