Health Berkeley, WVU Medicine Announces Healthy Holidays Cooking Classes MARTINSBURG, W.VA. - To help you make your holidays more healthy and enjoyable, Healthy Berkeley and WVU Medicine University Healthcare are teaming up to offer Cook It! Healthy Holidays with Joan Starliper, MS, RD, LD and Dana DeJarnett, MS, both staff members of The Wellness Center at Berkeley Medical Center. The Cook It! Healthy Holidays class will be held at Martinsburg South Middle School in the FACS classroom on Tuesday, December 13 from 6-8pm. Learn to make tasty alternatives to your favorite holiday dishes while engaging in a food preparation
class that focuses on healthier choices and a discussion with presenters. Tasting samples are included. To register for Cook It! Healthy Holidays call 304.267.3585. WV’s First Hidden Heroes’ City… Charles Town, WV A Veterans’ Caregivers Community Forum will be held on December 7th 2016 in Charles Town, WV. The location is Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North Street in Charles Town from 10am to 2pm. Caregiver Agencies who wish to provide information as to how they can assist military & veteran caregivers are encouraged to make a reservation to participate not later than November 30, 2016 by emailing daveranck@ yahoo.com . Caregivers and the public are encouraged to attend the Forum. A light lunch will be available. Hidden-Hero’s is an organization formed by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to help support
our military and veteran caregivers in communities across the country. The Foundation was created by Senator Elizabeth Dole with the hope of each nationwide city finding innovative and creative means of assisting these caregivers with unique challenges they face. This is a societal crisis which requires our response and through the help of public, private, and non-profit assistance as well as the aid of community members. Charles Town Mayor, Peggy Smith identified the Elizabeth Dole Foundation had such an initiative at the national level and through her efforts. Charles Town became the first designated Hidden Hero city in the state of WV.

Words of advice: Just call
SHEPHERDSTOWN – Just call. Those were the words that Joy Pardue remembers reading in a local newspaper article relating to hospice services. And so, one day, early in 2016, she did just that. For more than a decade, Joy had been suffering from mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), a lung disease. She was tired and in nearly constant pain. She put in a call to Hospice of the Panhandle CEO Margaret Cogswell, who also happens to be her neighbor. She talked to Cogswell about her disease, and the nearly constant pain she was in. And about how she would somehow get back doing some of the things that she loved. An access/admissions nurse two days later determined that Joy was eligible. She was admitted to hospice care in mid-January. Hospice of the Panhandle offers pain and symptom

management to those with life-limiting illnesses, who have a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease follows its normal course. Sometimes, hospice patients spend longer than six months in the program. “I really don’t think I’d still be here today if it weren’t for hospice,” Joy said. “I can’t say enough good things.” A retired psychiatrist, Pardue is an outdoor enthusiast. She talks about her Steamboat Run home outside of Shepherdstown that she and her husband, Larry, built seven years ago as being in “the middle of paradise.” She loves to go outside, stroll in the yard, and when she’s feeling well enough, attend weekly get-togethers of her “Scrabble Club.” Her husband, Larry, says that Joy had been “steadily declining” before the January call. Now, she’s able do most things she likes to do. “She was probably a 7 or 8 on the pain scale, but now is more often a 2 or 3,” Larry said. “It was a 180- degree turn after we called Hospice.” Larry continues his work as a psychiatrist with the VA

Medical Center, spending his days working from home, so he can be with Joy. “He’s encouraged me every step of the way,” she said. The Pardues have been married for 52 years. Since her admission, Joy’s been able to accomplish two dreams – attending a niece’s graduation in Nashville, and going to Destin, FL, on a beach vacation with Larry, her son, and 7-year-old grandson. “The trip to Nashville was an unqualified success,” said Joy, who has traveled all over the world. “It was a small family gathering, a lovely celebration.” The beach vacation, about a month later, was tiring for her, but she still enjoyed seeing the beach from her bed. “Just opening my eyes, it was all right there – the beach, the pelicans…my grandson (playing),” she said. Her advice to others who have been suffering from debilitating illness is the same message that she read in the article early this year: Just call. “Hospice is your place to start,” Joy said. “This is such a better quality of life.”
