Make the most of gameday entertaining Few things are more exciting and festive for sports fans than gathering with close friends to cheer on a favorite team. Although a large part of the fun involves watching the game, food and other festivities often round out the day — especially when fans gather in the comforts of private homes rather than big stadiums. Having good food nearby is essential when hosting sports fans for a big game, and there are many additional ways to make gameday that much more fun and memorable. Establish the atmosphere Make the party area more festive by incorporating team colors. Feature these colors on serving bowls, plates, pennants, balloons, and more. Remember to ask guests to wear the apparel of their favorite teams, hang photos of key players and keep a ball on hand so guests can toss or kick it around between plays. Choose fan-favorite foods Game day menu options can include anything from finger foods to more elaborate appetizers to main courses. Games can take several hours from start to finish, so make sure you have enough food to cover the duration of the event. Consider favorites like chicken wings, sliders, mozzarella sticks, and deli sandwiches. Use a slow cooker to prepare chili or stew. A slow cooker also can be used to cook ribs or hot dogs in bulk. It’s also a handy tool to prepare pork loin for pulled pork sandwiches. Don’t forget desserts Desserts are an item you can delegate to guests. If you want to
prepare your own desserts, small and portable items are easier to manage and cut down on the mess while fans are cheering. In addition to the requisite potato chips and pretzels, cookies, brownies/blondies, cupcakes, and fruit tarts are all small desserts to consider adding to the menu. MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its total hip and knee replacement surgery programs, demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety in disease specific care. Berkeley Medical Center originally earned this distinction in 2012 and again in 2014. The medical center’s total hip and knee replacement program was recently re-certified following a rigorous onsite evaluation in May by a Joint Commission expert. Berkeley Medical Center was evaluated for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. “In achieving Joint Commission certification for another two-year cycle, the staff at Berkeley Medical Center and our team of orthopedic surgeons have demonstrated our commitment to the highest level of care for patients undergoing total hip or knee replacement surgery,” said WVU Medicine University Healthcare President and CEO Anthony P. Zelenka. The total hip and knee replacement program at Berkeley Medical Center is comprised of a multidisciplinary team representing surgery, anesthesia, nursing, pharmacy, quality, physical therapy, occupational therapy, food and nutrition, and social work. “This team approach enhances the individualized, patient-centered care delivered at every stage – from pre-admission to acute hospital stay and discharge,” Zelenka stated, adding, “Achieving the prestigious Joint Commission certification for the third time distinguishes us for the excellent care the orthopedic team provides to our patients and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improving patient care.” The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program which was launched in 2002 is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities. The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is in dire need to find homes for kittens and cats. This “kitten season” which began in late winter and has continued through summer has left our shelter with 48 kittens. Many have been adopted into loving homes; however, kittens continue to be surrendered or abandoned at our door. These healthy, frisky, and cute as buttons kittens are now ready for their new homes and AWS is offering a discount for the month of October. Adoption fees include testing them for feline leukemia and FIV (AIDS), vaccinations, deworming, ear cleaning, flea checks, spay/neutering, and microchipping for identification.
