How to keep kids engaged over school breaks

Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Some, like Australia, feature four terms with two-week breaks in between each term. Others go to school for most of the year — with various holiday breaks in between — and then get the bulk of their time off during the summer. As much time as kids spend in school, there will be times when they are left to their own devices, and during these times it’s easy for them to forgot classroom lessons. Sometimes called “summer learning lossâ€? or “summer slide,â€? this forgetfulness sees many students fail to retain all of their lessons over prolonged breaks from school. Studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer. Anywhere from between one to three month’s worth of educational achievement can dissipate during prolonged breaks from the classroom. To help ensure that those hard-earned lessons are not so easily forgotten, parents can help children remain intellectually engaged in various ways over school breaks. • Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins.
• Encourage reading. Set aside time for reading each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills. Children may enjoy picking their own books rather than having a required reading list. • Keep a math book handy. On long car trips or rainy days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum. Math workbooks may be available at bookstores, or parents can look online or ask a teacher for a summer to-do packet. • Plan educational trips. Vacations and day trips can be fun, entertaining and educational all at the same time. Science centers, museums and living history locations can bring to life information learned in the classroom, even on family vacations. • Learn at camp. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school breaks. Look for camps that do not simply babysit children, but engage them through enrichment activities. • Take a class. Children and families can learn together by exploring new skills. Enroll in something educational and enjoyable, such as a music or dance class, a STEM seminar or something else that engages the mind and body. This gives everyone a chance to learn something new and have a great time together as a family. Parents and educators can reduce lesson loss over school breaks by encouraging families to remain intellectually engaged in any way they can.

WVU Medicine Berkeley, Jefferson Medical Centers Benefit From 30th Annual Golf Classic The proceeds from this year’s event will be used to purchase a newborn hearing screening system at Jefferson Medical Center and equipment for the new outpatient surgery center to open this fall at MOB 3, 880 Tennessee Avenue, at Berkeley Medical Center. “We thank all of our supporters who year after year make our golf fund raiser a huge success as one of the premier golf events in the region,” stated Teresa McCabe, vice president marketing and development for Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers.

Public Invited To WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Drive MARTINSBURG, WV. – JUNE 15, 2017 – Virginia Blood Services and WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center have partnered to hold a public blood drive. The drive will take place in the Center’s 8th Floor Classroom on Friday, June 30 from 11 am to 3:30 pm. Berkeley Medical Center is located at 2500 Hospital Drive in Martinsburg, WV. Walk-ins are welcomed, but appointments are advised to avoid longer waits. Please schedule appointments at https://donateblood.vablood.org.
According to McCabe, the golf classic was established in 1988 as a fund and friend raiser for the Gateway Foundation in support of City Hospital. Since that time, the tournament was combined with the Jefferson Memorial Hospital golf tournament and now supports both WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center.

Stay Safe With Dogs This Summer!
While there are many reasons to love summer, it is an unfortunate reality that dog bites occur more often in the summer months than any other time of year. The good news is that you can prevent most dog bites with the right information. Review these tips to ensure a safer summer with your dogs! About half of all dog bites involve a child under the age of 12 years. Teach your children how to recognize the signs of protective and fearful body language in dogs. A child should never approach or handle a dog displaying fearful or protective body language. Make sure your children know what to do if a strange dog approaches them. Instruct children not to run, but walk to a safe place. Everyone, regardless of age, should also practice how to “be a tree” when a dog is acting aggressively. Children can also “be a tree” any time a dog is playing too rough. Learn more here. Be your dog’s ally. Protect him or her from “triggers,” that may increase in the summer. Possible triggers that can preclude a bite may be the appearance of kids in the neighborhood, who would normally be in the school the rest of the year. Rambunctious outdoor games, summer fireworks, and new visitors in the home might also lead to triggers. Learn more about risky situations here. Learn the safe way to meet a new dog, and practice with your family, using a stuffed animal if needed. You may think you know how to meet a new dog safely, but there is more to meeting a dog safely than many imagine. Make sure your dogs are vaccinated against rabies. Even a “minor” bite becomes a big deal when the animal has no proof of a current rabies vaccine.

Services For Rick Wachtel
Rick Wachtel, 71, of Martinsburg, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Penn State Health Medical Center. He was born on January 29, 1946 to William and Jean Wachtel also of Martinsburg. Rick is survived by his wife, Sandra, brother, Gregg, his children, Jonathan and Clair, and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his grandson, Sutton. Rick graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1963 and Shepherd College in 1968. With a degree in business, he worked at General Motors in Martinsburg for 8 years. In 1976, Rick co-founded WRNR-AM 740 radio station which came to be TalkRadio WRNR. Rick served as President and General Manager of WRNR for 40 years. He was a licensed realtor in WV for 35 years and a certified National Football League agent for 4 years. Rick coached youth league football for 30 years and was the public address announcer at Martinsburg High School football games for 34 years. He was a Member (and past Martinsburg Chairman and
Qigong Healing Class, Martinsburg Public Library (downstairs). Low Impact, Uses Movement, Breathing Exercises, Self Massage and Meditation. Class is Free but Gratuities Accepted.

He was inducted into the Martinsburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame (Supporter, 2009) and West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame (2012). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rick Wachtel Scholarship Fund at Shepherd University Foundation, Box 5000, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.
