Beating the heat in a pool is one of the most popular warmweather activities. Swimming attracts people of all ages because of its various benefits. In addition to being an enjoyable recreational activity, swimming also is a low-impact way to exercise. Having a backyard pool makes swimming and outdoor fun that much easier. Although exact numbers are difficult to come by, various sources indicate there are approximately 4.5 million residential swimming pools across the United States. While it once was relatively rare to find a backyard swimming pool in Canada, things have changed — especially in Quebec. No other province comes close to matching Quebec for backyard pools, which has well over 300,000 backyard pools, more than Ontario (which has five million more people). Quebec also has more pools per capita than almost anywhere else in North America according to numbers compiled by Pool & Spa Marketing magazine. Pools can be enjoyable places to gather and make for the focal points of yards, but they require careful use so fun is not overshadowed by tragedy. Unfortunately, young children have the highest risk of pool injury or drowning, with more than 200 youngsters drowning in swimming pools each year. The American Red Cross and National Swimming Pool Foundation® have partnered to educate home pool users. The following guidelines are important when adults and children are enjoying the pool. • Create barriers. Preventing accidental drowning means removing easy access to pools. Pools should be surrounded by secure fencing with an automatically latching gate. Fences
should not be accessible by climbing. Extra precautions like installing a safety cover on inground pools and removing or securing ladders when the pool is not in use can help as well. • Establish rules. Each pool owner should establish their own set of rules for the pool. These can include “no running around the pool,” “no diving in a shallow pool” and “no riding toys at poolside.” Pool owners can customize rules as they pertain to safety issues in their yards. • Maintain constant supervision. People of any age can drown. That is why it’s always safest for swimmers to swim with a buddy or with someone watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics says an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach when infants and toddlers are swimming. This is known as “touch supervision.” For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and remain free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending to household chores, or drinking alcohol. • Use approved flotation devices. Individuals who do not know how to swim should rely on a Coast Guard-approved flotation device. Water wings and general pool floats are not adequate, especially in situations that requires someone to be saved. • Take swimming lessons. Knowing how to swim will not entirely remove the risk of drowning, but it certainly can reduce it. Many swim programs teach water survival skills as well as general swimming techniques. Fun around the pool is par for the course come summer. But fun must be balanced with safety when swimming.

The Dean, Faculty and Staff of the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division would like to congratulate the graduating medical students from the Class of 2017, who received their Doctor of Medicine degrees on Friday, May 12, 2017, at a ceremony in Morgantown, WV. These students completed their third year of medical school at the WVU Eastern Division campus in Martinsburg, rotating through medical offices in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, University Healthcare’s Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, and at the Martinsburg Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. Medical Student rotations are completed under the supervision of both
faculty and community physicians who volunteer their time, with the consent of patients. The former students, now medical doctors, will be moving on to their chosen residencies this summer, as the final step of their education before practicing medicine. Since its opening in 2005, the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division has graduated more than 100 medical students, many of whom return to the Eastern Panhandle to practice medicine after completing their residencies.

“Bark in the Park” Saturday, June 3
The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is having its eleventh annual Bark in the Park fundraising event at Jefferson Memorial Park in Charles Town, WV. The event will be held on June 3rd from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. with registration at 9:30. This major fundraiser for the Animal Welfare Society depends on the contributions from pledges to help sustain the Society’s animal shelter on Leetown Pike and other programs. Pledge forms can be found at the AWS website www.awsjc.org. Print the form and start collect pledges from friends and family for the Interactive Dog Pledge Walk, which is similar to a walkathon. You and your best doggy pal or pals can have a day of fun participating in other various events. There will be a Blessing of the Animals; the Interactive Dog Pledge Walk; canine demonstrations; dog and owner games; canine contests; vendors that include dog rescues, crafts, products; and delicious food. There will also be a microchip clinic for participants at the low cost of $20 per pet! For a doggone good time, plan to spend the day and quality time with your best friend to benefit the homeless pets at the Animal Welfare Society shelter. Registration is a $10.00 donation per dog for the event and your canine friend receives a doggy bandana and goody bag. (Dogs must be current on vaccinations.) Hospice receives oxygen concentrator from Jefferson County TB Society

KEARNEYSVILLE – Hospice of the Panhandle received a high-flow oxygen concentrator from the Jefferson County Tuberculosis Society on May 17. The high-flow concentrator will help Hospice staff better manage patients who are suffering from extreme shortness of breath. The concentrator will be used at Hospice’s 3-year-old inpatient facility. “We are able to manage most patients’ shortness of breath with currently available tools but there are occasions when the patient’s condition warrants the use of this specialized piece of equipment,” said Hospice CEO Margaret Cogswell. “It’s really about quickly and effectively relieving the suffering that comes from being unable to breathe.”
Cogswell also noted that helping patients breathe better is beneficial for the family because watching a loved one trying to catch his or her breath is very difficult. “Hospice staff members are constantly working to find the best ways to relieve suffering for those for whom we care,” Cogswell said. Making the donation on behalf of the TB Society was David Fillman, a TB Society Board member who also is the system cardiopulmonary director, sleep director and EEG director at WVU Medicine. “It’s an important way for the Society to give back,” Fillman said. “We look to make donations to serve respiratory and cardiac needs in Jefferson County and this certainly fits the bill.” The TB Society has an endowment through which funds are distributed. Fillman, who has worked with Hospice staff on several projects, suggested to the TB Society Board that the donation be made after learning about a Hospice patient who came to the IPF in December who needed the concentrator. Fillman also is working on setting up training sessions for Hospice staff to learn how to use the concentrator. “The community continues to support Hospice of the Panhandle in so many ways,” Cogswell said. “Individuals and organizations have always been willing to help, over the course of Hospice’s entire 37-year history. The Board, staff, and our patients and families are truly grateful.”
