WVU Medicine University Healthcare Foundation WVU Medicine Berkeley 30th Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic Chairs Named Medical Center, Jefferson Medical Center Celebrate National Doctors’ Day Proceeds from this year’s golf classic will be used to purchase a newborn hearing screening system at Jefferson Medical Center, and equipment for the new Outpatient Surgery Center at Berkeley Medical Center in MOB3 across from the hospital.

2017 Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic Co-Chairs Dan Sytsma (left) and Charlie Lowery (right) are pictured with Cress Creek Golf Pro John Francisco (center). MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Dan Sytsma of WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center and Charlie Lowery, CNB Bank, have been named co-chairs for the 2017 University Healthcare Foundation Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic. The annual golf classic, which benefits Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, will be held on Monday, June 5 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. Over $1.5 million in proceeds has been raised as a result of past golf tournaments at both hospitals.

The 2017 Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic will feature two flights with call to carts at 7am and 12:45pm. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of each flight. Flight preference will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Golfers may form their own teams but will be subject to handicap restrictions as determined by the Golf Pro at Cress Creek.

Sponsorship levels include the $5000 Presenting, $2500 Underwriting, $1000 Sponsor, $500 Patron and $200 Golfer. An optional $20 Player’s Package is available for purchase which includes a mulligan, forward tee and one pro’s drive on #3. A portion of the sponsorship and golfer package is tax deductible. For more information on the 2017 Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, contact Teresa McCabe or Jody Wolfe at 304.264.1223 or email tmccabe@wvumedicine.org or jowolfe@wvumedicine.org.

This year marks the 30th year for the tournament, which was established in 1988 as a fund raiser and “friend” raiser for Berkeley Medical Center. Named in memory of University Healthcare Charter Board Director Dr. James “Bernie” Hutzler, the tournament was expanded in 2010 to benefit both Berkeley and Jefferson medical centers.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - On Thursday, March 30, WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center will join health systems and hospitals across the nation in honoring medical staff members on National Doctors’ Day.

The first Doctors’ Day celebration was organized in 1933 in Winder, Georgia. The idea was conceived by Barrow County Medical Auxilian Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond. March 30 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia in 1842 by Dr. Crawford Long, a Barrow County physician. Since that time, National Doctors’ Day has become an annual celebration to publicly show appreciation for the role of physicians in caring for the sick, advancing medical knowledge and promoting good health. “Everyone understands that our physicians are important to our Eastern Panhandle community, not only as caregivers but as neighbors and community leaders,” stated Rohit Gulati, MD, vice president/chief medical officer. “We want to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for their daily contributions to our health and well-being,” he added.

In 1958, a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990 President George Bush signed into law a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day. In celebration of National Doctors’ Day, Jefferson Medical Center will host a breakfast for physicians and Berkeley Medical Center will host a luncheon for physicians. Both events will be held on March 30.

to buy a new car and other cost-saving tips

S

hopping for a new car can be an exciting and sometimes stressful process. A vehicle is one of the largest purchases a person will make in his or her lifetime, so choosing an automobile requires careful research and some comparison shopping. According to IHS Automotive, there are more than 250 million registered passenger vehicles in the United States. In Canada, 33,168,805 vehicle registrations were reported by Statistics Canada in 2015. With so many cars and trucks on the road, it’s important for drivers to get a vehicle that meets their needs and fits their budgets. The following are some pointers for prospective buyers looking to save some money on their next vehicles.

Wait for model changeover

Pay attention to news regarding which vehicle models will be retired or redesigned, as this may indicate which vehicles might be offered at the best deals. The model year should also be considered when looking for a new car. Many buyers are naturally attracted to the newest model year, feeling that if they’re going to pay a lot for a car or truck, they want to do so for the newest available model. Buyers who don’t need the newest model available may find a better deal than those who do.

Choose a different body type

The National Automobile Dealers Association advises that pickup trucks and SUVs continue to command high prices. Shoppers who look at sedans, compact cars and even luxury vehicles may be able to get a better price than those looking for trucks or SUVs. Buyers should assess their needs and see if a different body style or category of car fits their needs and their budgets.

No matter the month, waiting until the last week of the month may be a good time to buy. Sales managers and dealerships in general have a monthly quota to meet and are compensated accordingly. Negotiating at this time means shoppers can get a good deal, while salespeople can move vehicles.

Choose the right day of the week

According to a study by TrueCar.com, an automotive pricing and information website, Sunday is the best day of the week to purchase a vehicle. Buyers can expect to pay as much as $2,000 more for the same vehicle on Friday than those who shop on a Sunday. Monday is also a good day, as there is less foot traffic and it may be possible to wrangle a better deal.

Factors

Wednesday, April 5, 2017

that may affect auto insurance premiums

A

uto insurance is a necessity for drivers in many localities. But while local laws may mandate drivers have insurance, no such laws mandate how much drivers must pay to insure their vehicles. Certain factors can influence just how much drivers will pay for their auto insurance policies.

1. Complacency: Doing nothing at all may find you spending too much on auto insurance. Many drivers fail to routinely shop around for coverage, and that can be costing them money. In its 2013 Insurance Shopping Study, the research firm J.D. Power found that only 23 percent of auto insurance customers shopped their policies in the past 12 months. 2. Coverage and deductibles: The type of coverage you choose, as well as the amount of your deductible, will affect the cost of your policy. Choosing a higher deductible (the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance will start to pay) usually leads to a lower monthly payment. Full coverage may not be necessary if you

3. Location: Where you live can affect the cost of your insurance premiums. Since most traffic accidents occur close to home, the area where you live factors heavily in the cost of your policy. Densely populated neighborhoods with more cars mean you could be at a higher risk of accident, theft and injury. 4. Age/gender: A person cannot change his or her age, but it’s wise to realize that age and gender can affect costs. Young men typically incur higher rates than young women. 5. Vehicle type: According to State Farm, some insurance companies increase premiums for cars deemed more likely to be damaged or stolen. 6. Credit score: Raise your credit score and you may be able to lower your car insurance costs. According to the research firm Conning & Co., roughly 92 percent of insurers use your credit information as a factor to determine rates. Studies show that people with bad credit tend to file more and higher claims.

Did you know?

Car buyers may find some great deals by using offered rebates. Rebates can take place at any time of the year. Dealers typically use rebates in order to clear out a particular model year. Rebates may also be offered through the manufacturer. Dealerships may sell a vehicle for less when certain incentives are applied. Shoppers can rely on Edmunds.com to search for rebates and incentives by vehicle make and geographic location.

T

he evidence is clear: Distracted driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Removing one’s eyes from the road for mere seconds can have dangerous repercussions, contributing to accidents, injury or even death. Distraction.gov, the United States government’s official website for Distracted Driving, states that, in 2014, 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers that 10 percent of all drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This

distracted driving

age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted at the time of the crashes. A 2013 Allstate Canada marketing survey conducted with more than 1,500 Canadian adults found that, although the vast majority of Canadians think distracted driving is dangerous, nearly three out of four Canadian drivers engage in behavior that is considered distracting. The term “distracted driving” is an umbrella term that refers to various behaviors drivers engage in when behind the wheel. The situations below are some of the biggest distractions today’s drivers must deal with.

Talking or texting on a mobile phone Mobile phone usage is one of the leading causes of distracted driving. Five seconds is the average time a person’s eyes are off the road while texting. When traveling at 55 mph, that’s enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded. And people are not only texting when behind the wheel. They’re posting to social media, taking photos and video, as well as reading emails and more. The National Occupant Protection Use Survey points out that, at any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. Passenger distractions People, pets and objects inside of a vehicle can be quite a distraction as well. Removing focus from the road for a few seconds to address rowdy children in the back seat or to pass food to the backseat can cause vehicles to veer. Drivers who allow pets to ride

unrestrained in their cars may find their animals in their laps or roaming around, which can be distracting as well. Drivers should remain in control of their passengers at all times. This includes ensuring people and pets are properly fastened in seat belts and the volume of music and voices is kept to a minimum. Reading behind the wheel Looking at a map, glancing at an incoming email or even trying to locate street signs or billboards on the side of the road can be distracting. When drivers are unsure of where to go, they can bring along another passenger, who can keep his or her eyes peeled for landmarks. Passengers also can look at the map or GPS so drivers can stay focused on the road. It is paramount that drivers keep their eyes on the road at all times. Limiting distractions, however innocuous they may seem, can keep drivers, their passengers and their fellow motorists safe.

Tire maintenance

a key component of spring check-up

W

hen warm weather arrives, many people enjoy a collective sigh of relief. Just as people welcome the end of the cold, snow and ice, cars and trucks also can benefit from more moderate temperatures. Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.

Inflation levels

Did you know?

Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Esurance states that winter weather can cause tire

pressure reduction at about one PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy, so drivers may even save a little money by inflating their tires.

Tire rotation/realignment

Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to get their opinion on how to remedy the situation. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average

driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Misaligned wheels can cause handling problems, like the car “pulling” to one side.

Tire replacement

Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires. Failing to replace old, worn down tires can increase the risk of automobile accidents.

Thorough cleaning

Once tires are inspected and possibly serviced or replaced, treat the car or truck to a washing and thorough detailing. This will help tires shine and get the vehicle road-ready for spring trips.

Though more buyers may prefer to lease new vehicles over preowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preowned automobiles. According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costs are less for various reasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leased brand new.
