Frank Sabado Pre-Med Scholarship Applications Now Available
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Applications for the Frank Sabado, Jr, MD Tennis Classic Scholarship are now available at each of the six public high schools in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties. University Healthcare Foundation Tennis Classic Co-chairs Ernie Agbayani, MD and Roberto Reyna, MD announced last October that proceeds from the 2016 fund raiser would be used to establish a one-time scholarship to be awarded to one senior from each high school studying pre-med in the fall of 2017. “We want to encourage and assist area youth interested in becoming physicians,” stated Reyna. “Because this tournament was established in 2004 by a group of local physicians and renamed last year in mem-
ory of our colleague Dr. Frank Sabado, the committee felt it was appropriate to establish a scholarship to support local students pursuing a career in medicine,” he added. Applications for the Frank Sabado, Jr, MD Tennis Classic Scholarship are available in the guidance departments at Jefferson High School, Washington High School, Martinsburg High School, Musselman High School, Hedgesville High School and Spring Mills High School. “In addition to the high schools, applications are also available in the University Healthcare Foundation office,” Agbayani stated. The application deadline is March 31, 2017. The six scholarships will be awarded in May.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center’s Nurse Work Life Council named Donna Autry, RN, as the recipient of the DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses for the fourth quarter 2016. The award was presented to Autry, a nurse in the outpatient cancer and infusion center, during a recent ceremony at the medical center. She received a certificate along with a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. Evelyn Williams, RN, a nurse on the behavioral health unit, was recognized as a Daisy Honorable Mention recipient. The DAISY award was established nationally to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Nurses at
University Healthcare’s Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center are being honored throughout the year with the DAISY Award. The awards are sponsored by the University Healthcare Foundation. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
