Editorial Those people dealing with Rex as he put the finishing touches on this issue of PanelTalk probably had no idea he was working from his temporary ‘office’ in the Coronary Care ward of the hospital while waiting for an urgent heart bypass operation.

Speaking of stories, this issue is packed with them.

From a full report of the 2016 CRA Conference to profiles on all the deserving CRA Award Winners and all the usual industry news, views and helpful tips to improve your business.

Fast forward less than two weeks and Rex (my father) is now at home, recovering from major surgery to treat the severe heart disease he had no idea he had. A fairly fit and active man, it was some chest pains that finally prompted him to see a doctor – a visit that saw him admitted straight to hospital and to the top of the waiting list for surgery. The moral of this story is if you have any health concerns at all, no matter how minor you think they are – get them checked out!

Dad normally signs off by encouraging feedback, good or bad, so I will do the same. And while he is recovering well, please bear with him if he takes a bit longer than normal to respond!

CRA General Manager’s Report

2016 CRA ANNUAL CONFERENCE The feedback from this year’s conference in Dunedin has all been very supportive. It seems that the overall vibe of positivity and local friendliness proved a winner.

Popular as ever were the bar room chat sessions and one of the hot topics was the proposal for CRA to take on the iBodyshop distribution for New Zealand. It was a contentious question but as the majority feeling was negative, we have turned down the offer. Steve O’Brien had a stand at the conference and while disappointed, was understanding of the CRA position. So just to be clear – we will not be taking on the distribution and support on iBodyshop. That said their stand was amongst the most visited over the conference and Steve was greatly encouraged by the enquiry and support he received.

Of great interest to me and the National Executive is how the members feel about commercial ventures in general.

The common view is that we are in a changing environment where consolidation is the name of the game. Most agree that in the future, fewer repairers will be doing more of the work. That being the case, members will either pay more to belong or we will have to develop alternative income streams. We would love your feedback on this issue. Please let us know how you feel in general and if you have any suggestions.

The success of the Dunedin conference brings to mind next year – Melbourne at the Collision Repair Expo.

Please reserve the date – April 6 to 8 2017.

Tower Insurance In case you missed my email – Tower Insurance are looking at their preferred repairer network.

We have been told by Auckland members approached by Tower that they are saying if we give you a contract we will expect a discount or kick back (and 10% has been mentioned) on all Tower work completed.

Members need to analyze how much work they do for Tower and decide whether giving away 10% on the narrow margins they already make is worthwhile.

Anyone thinking of offering a discount should think very carefully:

·Discount comes from your bottom line – can you

afford it.

·According to IRD statistics, the median profit for

repairers in our industry was between 1% and

2% for the 2013 year

·What message would giving a discount send to

other, bigger insurance companies (not

to mention other CRA members).

·Do you have the capacity to take on extra work

(for little or a negative return) or will you have to

disappoint other work providers?

It would appear that very few collision repairers in this country actually achieve a net profit higher than ten percent. According to IRD statistics, the median profit for repairers in our industry was between 1 and 2 percent for the 2013 year. So allowing for some creative accounting, maybe that figure is between 3 and 4 percent. I have done some research and the average net profit of an estimated 80 shops that belong to business development groups that actually benchmark their figures (in other words the country’s more progressive repairers) is 7.07 percent.

CRA Overall Best Business 2016 Colin Waite Ltd

PanelTalk featured Colin Waite Ltd in our May/June 2013 issue. Back then we reported on this company’s belief in the importance of continual investment in equipment and training to enable them to remain at the forefront of the industry. Fast forward three years and they have reaped the rewards by taking out the title of CRA Overall Best Business for 2016.

The winner of the top award is likely to have been a finalist in one or more of the year’s award categories, and shows commitment and outstanding qualities in many of the categories.

Beattie Auto Body Repairs (2001) Ltd, Gore Colin Waite Ltd, Auckland Raxworthy European Ltd, Christchurch Ross White Panel & Paint Ltd, Taupo The premises, shared by R C Turley Carpainters, barely held six cars at a time but there was ample carparking nearby which was required as under new leadership the business experienced rapid expansion.

Gary, Colin and Paul Waite This story really began back in 1959, when Colin’s boss decided to sell his panelbeating business due to ill health and Colin decided to take the plunge. He borrowed money from his father and established Colin Waite Panelbeaters in the Auckland city fringe suburb of Kingsland.

By the early 60s, just a few years after Colin took the helm, the expansion led to a shift to larger premises in Morningside, a site that remains a panelshop today.

This site was a huge improvement but by the mid 1960s Colin was getting restless. He desired a modern clean building to work from and purchased a site down the road that contained the burnt out remains of a boarding house.

Turley Carpainters decided to remain in the existing premises and so Colin Waite Panelbeaters began trading from the New North Road site it still occupies today.

The building’s construction was very much a family effort, with a family friend handling the building contract with Colin and sons Gary and Paul helping out in the

Panelshop weekends. Upon completion it was arguably the most modern panelbeating facility of the time. Since then, Colin has purchased an additional five adjoining sites so that today there are buildings on all five sites with the sixth reserved for carparking. This gives the company an impressive presence with its long road frontage.

Around twelve years ago, Colin retired from being actively involved in the day to day running of the business, passing control to his two sons Gary and Paul.

Gary had served his time as a panelbeater at Bob Fielders before joining the company in 1980 while Paul joined his brother and father five years later, having served his mechanical apprenticeship. However until recently, Colin would still occasionally be found somewhere around the premises, usually with a broom in

hand or attending to some maintenance.

Today Colin Waite Ltd has a loyal, long serving team of four panelbeaters plus two panel trainees, four car painters plus two trainees, one detailer and car groomer and one part time spare parts storeman. To feed these productives are two estimators with Gary's wife Karen in the office.

This leaves the two brothers, with Paul in charge of internal logistics such as production, courtesy cars, consumables, maintenance and final inspection while Gary looks after the company’s insurance and dealership work providers and general management duties.

The company, since it’s inception, has always been at the

OVERALL BEST BUSINESS Paint preparation area forefront of the industry when it comes to technology and equipment, and they underwent another major equipment upgrade in 2014. This included the addition of two Car-O-Liner Quick 42 chassis benches and three Car-O-Liner Speed benches.

Said Gary, "This type of equipment is absolutely necessary to ensure the most efficient productivity possible, which is essential in today’s business environment."

They then invested in the Planning Plus electronic scheduling system, which after some time getting used to loading it, proved to be an invaluable aid to their productivity.

However, this investment in the panelshop highlighted some shortcomings in the refinish department. A point brought home to Gary as he read an article in PanelTalk about the inefficiency of old spraybooths and realised that that applied to them. Their two Garmat spraybooths, which were leading edge technology in their time, were over 25 years old and were very inefficient compared to what was available in 2015.

After much research, a new spraybooth complete with two full length banks of airflow nozzles to accelerate flash off and curing time, and a double full down draft prep bay, along with a new paint mixing room was ordered. The spraybooth, and prep bays were installed just prior to Christmas 2015 and the mixing room was being completed at the time of PanelTalk’s visit.

Carparking the remaining Garmat booth, even though it is in perfect working order, to free up some space to further improve productivity.

A recent extension to one of the facility’s buildings has provided a dedicated parts storage area, an inspection hoist and estimating area.

An environmental focus is everywhere throughout the site, they recycle everything possible, capture water from their roof to use in the car grooming operations, and have been using Glasurit 90 Line waterborne in the paintshop since 2009.

Training has always been front of mind at Waite's and this is demonstrated by the fact that all collision repair technicians are I-Car welding certified, and Gary and one other are I-Car Platinum. For their paintshop training they rely heavily on their paint supplier Glasurit for their in-house training and their paintshop manager has attended the Glasurit Training Centre in Australia.

After 56 years in business, Colin Waite Ltd remains one of the country’s leading collision repair facilities, something that all in the industry can aspire to. Owning a successful auto repair shop is no easy feat and although there are no shortcuts to success, entrepreneurs and experts from various fields have given the world insight to creating successful companies.

This insight may be applied to any industry and the auto repair shop industry is no exception.

Having a successful shop isn’t just making a lot of money or having lots of clients, it’s following a guideline and personal growth, follow the next seven tips and you’ll see how progress and prosperity will follow.

Hire People that are “Better than you” Value Attitude Above all Else We live in a society where an education makes people more qualified than others and although in industries such as health care this might be the case, don’t think a college degree is everything.

Automotive technicians are known to be able to work under pressure and are passionate about their jobs.

Arm your shop with people that have passion and the rest will come.

Many Hands make Light Work As the old Chinese proverb says and if you’re surrounded by people with passion, creating a common goal and being a leader will help you achieve said goal quicker. Whether your goal is rapid growth, an effective week or perfect reviews from all of your customers, let your plans be known among your team and you’ll find that their passion under your guidance will help you achieve anything.

Make sure your employees can all bring something to the table that you can’t. Don’t be intimidated by people having a different set of skill and being better than you at them. Think of everyone as important pieces of the puzzle with your leadership as the first and last piece.

Drive and Perseverance are Contagious Having a vision that’s clear enough for everyone to see is the key to ensure everyone is working towards the same goal. Be persistent, let your goals be known and not only will your team follow suit but your drive will also be contagious to them.

Your success is their success and make sure your team knows that.

Avoid the Pitfall of Enemies

Love Life Money is the goal of too many shop owners and even though money is necessary, it can’t be what drives you. Making life better for yourself and for your employees involves being happier and this becomes true when you begin to love the life you’re living. Do this and not only will you improve the way you think, but this will also transmit to your employees.

One of the most common aspects in the automotive repair industry is friendly, tough competition. Don’t see your competitors as enemies; instead, see them as people that encourage growth. Every shop might offer similar services but not all think the same way or do business the same way. Why not learn from all of your competitors and gather the good things? It is during adversities that we achieve our potential.

Failure is Giving up Last but not least, running a repair shop involves being true to your philosophy and even though there will be rough patches, don’t give up and continue to work passionately.

Failure is simply giving up, so the important thing to remember is, every experience provides an obstacle and you’re never handed more than you can deal with.

What do you feel that you get out of your CRA membership? ‘You only get out what you put in’ is a great saying and one that I believe is very true. We have just attended a great conference with a good format and as always, it was great to meet so many other shop owners. Thanks

What is your prediction for the future of the collision repair industry in New Zealand?

I still see a bright future ahead, yes smart cars are here and we must kept up with the likes of our I-CAR training to repair these vehicles but with the age of the New Zealand vehicle fleet and the training of our staff, I still see many more good years to come.

In your opinion what is the most challenging area of compliance as far as a collision repair facility in New Zealand goes?

To me the most challenging area of compliance is allocating the resources to implement, oversee and maintain the ongoing changes. The cost of this to our business needs to be recognised by our repair partners as to do it properly costs a lot of money.

We have stretched resources in our admin team and we already put pressure on our techs to perform on the floor. It all comes as an added cost with no way

to recover it bar improving systems and processes; however there is only so far we can go with that.

What is your prediction for the future of the collision repair industry in New Zealand?

My short term prediction for our industry is a good one; the shops that invest well in equipment, people and systems will have volume, be it at a low margin.

Having said that, nothing gives me more pleasure than walking into one of my shops and seeing it clean and tidy and putting out quality work on time with happy staff.

Winning the award makes us proud of what we have achieved in the last four years, it means that all the blood, sweat and tears have been worth it. While we all work on our business, we don't know what we have really done until something like this happens and you take a step back and see what others see. As for the business, it means that we are heading in the right direction as our peers have awarded us the award.

What is your prediction for the future of the collision repair industry in New Zealand?

My prediction is the repairs are going to get more complicated and sophisticated as vehicles evolve.

Panel shops will have to invest heavily in training staff and up grading equipment to keep with the times or be left behind.

What prompted your decision to carry out the upgrade, and what benefits do you feel you have achieved from it?

We had outgrown the old premises that were run down and dusty with no room for future growth. Once we found the right premises we started planning and

There is a lot that goes on in our business on a daily bases, and having systems and processes in place makes the day to day running of it so much easier.

What is your prediction for the future of the collision repair industry in New Zealand?

I’m sure it will be just fine. We’ve gotten through 100 years already and I’m sure we’ll get through another 100. We just need to all work together, adapt to changes as there have been a lot so far and there will be many more to come. We have to prepare for the future with forward planning and the right attitude.

What is your prediction for the future of the collision repair industry in New Zealand?

The Collision Repair Association benefits are going to become stronger in this industry due to the expectations of our work providers and correct repair methods required by the car manufacturers to enable us to repair these vehicles in the future.

Gary Geeves Awarded CRA Life Membership

Gary’s career in the collision repair industry began as a spraypainting apprentice in 1982. This was followed by some time spent as a paint distributor’s representative before eventually buying an existing panel and paint business now known as Smart Collision Repairs in 1987.

Gary has always had an active role at all levels of the CRA from Branch and National Executive level and on to National Chairman for four years between 2009 and 2012.

As well as his CRA positions Gary has also been heavily involved in many other industry initiatives including MITO Advisory boards, I-CAR NZ Board of Trustees, the PartsTrader Advisory Group and a number of other advisory groups. Due to his ‘tell it like it is attitude’, and

his genuine regard for the wellbeing of all people in the collision repair industry, his input into these groups has always been highly regarded.

During his time as the CRA Chairman, Gary was well known for his open door policy engaging in many hours on the phone with members, suppliers and insurers, and visiting as many member shops around the country that time would allow. He also made a point of attending at least one roadshow in every region at least once a year.

This was a huge sacrifice of his time, but this was something he always gave willingly.

With his motto of always wanting to hear ‘the good, the bad and the ugly” from the members, he truly was the ‘People’s Chairman’.

‘In all my years of being involved in this great industry it has always been about people. There are hard core left and right views and opinions on topics, but it has always been about listening, talking and getting better mutual outcomes for all parties and earning respect. 2016 CRA GOLDEN GUN GOOD AS GOLD Two MITO apprentices - Kerryn Horn of Harvey Collision Repairs, Hamilton, and Jordan Davies from Imperial Panelbeaters, Whangarei - look set for golden careers after being named the 2015 CRA Apprentices of the Year at the annual Collision Repair Association awards in April.

Presented by MITO Chairman David O’Kane, the awards recognise apprentices at the top of their field in both automotive refinishing and collision repair. “I was more than impressed with these two outstanding individuals,” says David. “The passion and dedication they show to their respective crafts, coupled with their professionalism and commitment to producing consistently high-quality work, mean these are young men with attributes beyond their years. They should be extremely proud of this significant achievement.”

The CRA Apprentice of the Year - Golden Gun award, held in high regard within the industry, is presented to the most outstanding apprentice in automotive refinishing.

Twenty-two year old Kerryn, stood out with his enthusiasm and self-motivation listed as particular qualities of note.

Together with his great attitude and significant depth of skill, he was an obvious choice for the award.

“I was thrilled to receive the Golden Gun,” says Kerryn.

“What started off as any normal work day, quickly became one of the highlights of my career when I was called into the office and told I was the recipient. I was quite shocked to be honest – and still am - but I’m definitely proud of this achievement.”

Having recently completed a National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body) (Levels 3 and 4) with strand in Refinishing, Kerryn has always shown a keen interest in the industry. Volunteering to sweep the workshop floors at Tirau Panelbeaters at just 12 years old, then moving to Hamilton on his own at 16 to complete a pre-trade qualification, he gained as much exposure to the working environment as he was able.

“I’ve always loved anything to do with cars,” Kerryn says.

“It’s somewhat strange given no one else in my family have any affinity with them, but growing up I just always

had this desire to work in the industry! I think that first job when I was 12 years old really resonated with me. It was a small town and they did all kinds of repairs and maintenance in the workshop – apart from refinishing!

I vividly remember seeing the vehicles being sent away to another shop to be painted, and coming back looking brand new. I think that had quite an impact on me at a young age and no doubt contributed to my future career path.”

Supervisor Brent Shepherd describes Kerryn as conscientious, confident and well respected among his fellow employees – with senior tradesmen often asking for his opinion. “Kerryn is very self-motivated and highly proficient in his work”, Brent says. “This is evidenced by his imminent promotion to a supervisor role where he will continue to be an extremely valuable part of our team.

I’m ecstatic for him in receiving this award - it’s great to see him recognised for what he’s done and where he is at with his career!”

Kerryn clearly loves his job and the people he works with and plans to continue progressing through the ranks.

“I’m always wanting to learn more and think everyone should get qualified with a trade! You gain great skills and knowledge that you’ve got for the rest of your life.

It opens up so many opportunities for the future. My partner and I are also looking to buy our first home in a month or two – it’s amazing what you can achieve with a bit of hard work and positive attitude and influences. I consider myself very fortunate.”

2016 CRA GOLDEN HAMMER The CRA Apprentice of the Year – Golden Hammer Jordan’s commitment to his craft, demonstrated by his willingness to learn and the pride he takes in his work, stood out as particularly inspiring and commendable traits with the judges. Also highly regarded in the industry, the Golden Hammer is presented to the most outstanding apprentice in collision repair.

It was a fantastic surprise to receive the Golden Hammer,” says Jordan. It definitely came out of the blue, but I’m delighted and very proud to have been recognised in this way. For me, it really symbolises what I have achieved in my career to date.”

With a great propensity for hard work, the twenty-two year old grabs any opportunity to learn with both hands.

Jordan completed his National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body) (Levels 3 and 4) with strand in Collision Repair in 2015, and more recently achieved his iCar Platinum Recognition. His determination and high level of skill is well known, entering the WorldSkills New Zealand Regional Competition and finishing fourth – in the very first year of his apprenticeship.

“I really enjoyed that experience,” says Jordan. For me, it was the first time attempting several of the tasks – and I had to do them in a competitive environment! It was great though because I believe I thrive under pressure and it really taught me a lot.”

With that impressive work ethic, along with his notable technical and procedural knowledge, Jordan is described by his supervisor, Warren Davies, as an all-round asset to the business and the industry.

“Jordan shows a lot of pride and initiative in his work and is undeniably committed to his craft and the industry,” says Warren. “With his notable communication skills, he interacts with customers and stakeholders with ease and can easily take the reins for the day to day operation of the business as required.”

Sadly, Jordan’s grandfather passed away shortly before he enrolled in his apprenticeship, but was well aware of his grandson’s desire to follow in his footsteps. “He left me his tools, which I use to this day. They’re very special to me and are not only a great reminder of him, but also of where I come from.”

With a continuously growing skill set, Jordan hopes to one day own his own collision repair business. “I love the hands-on nature of my job,” he says, “and the sense of accomplishment in seeing the customer’s satisfaction is a particular highlight for me.”

With their Apprentice of the Year awards now proudly on display, both Kerryn and Jordan intend to make the most of this golden opportunity and continue to progress their already impressive careers. We’ll no doubt be hearing more from these men with the Midas touch.

After leaving school, Jordan quickly discovered he had an aptitude for collision repair, which he attributes to his passion for classic cars - citing the restoration of his 1967 Mercury Cougar as a labour of love. However, with a grandfather who also worked in the industry, Jordan notes he may have inherited some of his skills and

There are a couple of items that I said last year we would complete this year and we haven’t. The first was a generic estimating course and the second was the careers DVD. What I would like to understand is for those that are not engaged, what do we need to do to change your view of the Association and allow you to become engaged. Those of you here today, please, when you are talking to other repairers in your regions, whether members or not, try to tell them what you get from your engagement and ask them to come along to your next branch event so they too get the opportunity to see and hear what you see and hear. Just imagine if every member we had was engaged, had a point of view that they shared and were not afraid to speak out on things that are wrong or right with our industry. Just think what could happen if through this engagement when you were told by a work provider that “you are the only one that tries to charge for that” you

could say “no I’m not, Alan does too”. Imagine how powerful your Association could be with full member engagement.

Golden Gun owner Norm Shadbolt has witnessed many changes in the 33 years he has been working at the New Lynn collision repair business. Most of those were under previous owner Ray Howard but in more recent years as the business owner.

The business once occupied three separate sites and was heavily involved in restoration work, however over the last decade has consolidated activities and the restoration side is nearly history, with the business now firmly focused on collision repair on just one site. Like so many collision repair facilities, they are challenged for space, so organisation is essential.

Back in 2014 Christine Pemberton joined the team as a receptionist in charge of administration. With no experience in the collision repair industry it was a steep learning curve. Then came the IAG RFP and both Norm and Christine realized that these sorts of reviews could become commonplace in the future and the industry had no real formal quality standards.

This, and Norm’s drive for consistent quality led to them getting involved with the CRA Q/A programme. This was a whole new learning curve for Christine and admits that she found the programme daunting at first. She received 34 PanelTalk

a lot of assistance from RA Johnstone employee Cushla Bartlett who was a great help throughout the process and Mike Van Uden, the programmes external auditor made the auditing process a lot easier.

Both Norm and Christine are quick to credit each other for the successful implementation, but it was obviously a team effort. They were always making sure the whole team was involved and that they all understood what was trying to be achieved.

And once they got up to speed, the positives were immediately obvious. “Monitoring the programme and updating systems is easy now,” said Christine. “Things like health and safety do not present anywhere near the challenge that they once did and it is a great feeling knowing that we are fully compliant and have systems and processes in place to ensure we are continually checking and improving everything we do.”

Golden Gun, having now been in Norm’s ownership for several years, is a thriving, well-equipped collision repair facility staffed by three in the panelshop and two painters plus a prepper. Training is important at Golden Gun with many I-CAR certificates adorning the walls and all panel staff have been trained by Car-O-Liner to handle their two

chassis machines that both have Car-O-Tronic Vision computerized measuring systems. They switched to waterborne 12 months ago and have just had a new paint mixing room installed. The next addition is a prep bay that

they hope to have operational by the end of the year.

MEMBERSHIP LIAISON - Walter Zuber Hi all The long drive to Wellington to catch the lunchtime ferry got me out of bed early on a Sunday morning. I booked accommodation for the South Island trip well ahead as the increase in tourists is making it harder every year to find a bed in this part of the country. This proved to be a very wise move as I have never experienced so much traffic on the west coast ever before. I couldn’t believe my eyes one morning, driving from Wanaka to Queenstown approximately 20 Cars were parked on the side of the road with people sleeping in them due to booked out accommodation and camping grounds (or the temptation of freedom and free camping?). The tourism industry is really struggling with the influx of travellers. This of course has also a spinoff for our industry and the shops were really humming with work. Due to this pre-booking it was a bit of a pain as sometimes I had to move on because of accommodation but all in all it worked out all right.

The weather of course was outstanding, which made it hard to go and see the full on workshops. It is quite interesting to see the majority of shops continually making changes to improve work flow. On the negative side of it, there are still shops not working out their required shop rate on a regular basis and giving the staff the target hours. You can see the well-run shops, with target hours and staff in-put are a lot happier at work as they feel they are part of the business.

With this I hope see you back in the North Island.

CRA 2016 Annual Conference

For the first time ever, a number of people who were late registering, were unable to attend this conference due to space constraints. In all there were 248 registrations, representing 86 collision repair facilities, with 15 trade displays covering a whole range of suppliers to the industry.

Still wearing a ski jacket, and it truly wasn’t that cold in Dunedin, Alan welcomed the delegates and proceeded to open the conference. The scene was set, with Rob Stewart-McDonald beginning by outlining the similarities between the dynamic and rapidly changing environments you can encounter when climbing a mountain with the dynamic and rapidly changing environment in which we all operate our businesses.

This years’ shorter format conference started on the Friday with morning tea in the trade display area. This gave the delegates the opportunity to meet and greet each other and for a quick catch up while viewing the supplier stands before the official conference opening.

Being welcomed at the door of the conference room by a lone bagpiper was a fitting introduction to Dunedins Scottish heritage. Once in the room delegates were greeted by mountaineering legend Mark Inglis, introducing himself as M.C for the event. Mark set the alpine scene on stage with a two way radio conversation

face on a successful mountaineering expedition. You must rely on communication, collaboration, teamwork and leadership, which is no different to the success of a good business.

In the following sessions, both before and after lunch, Rob, with some input from Mark, took the delegates through some of the steps taken to assemble a successful, high performing team. Two of the key takeaways from this session were how important it was as a team leader to lead by example – ‘Action Not Words’ as Rob put it, and also the importance of communicating our goals to the whole team.

After lunch saw each of the tables of delegates tasked with creating their own high performance team in a quest to reach the virtual summit of Aoraki/Mount Cook. With Robs guidance each team chose their leader and various other functional roles within the team and then proceeded to scale the mountain, with various outcomes. Based upon the information available and the choices made just 4 teams out of the 21 made it to the virtual summit.

This was a great interactive presentation that held the attention of the delegates for almost four hours and clearly got the minds of the attendees focussed on their own teams within their businesses.

After having worked up a thirst on the mountain, Fridays business sessions ended with well-deserved drinks and nibbles in the trade display area, followed by a free evening for the delegates to sample Dunedins restaurants and nightlife.

The first speaker to take the stage on Saturday was Ian Taylor, founder of Animation Research Ltd. From humble beginnings in Raupunga, Ian has been a singer in a rock and roll band in the 60’ and 70’s, completed a law degree by the 80’s and then went on to work in television in an entirely new career. Through thinking differently he has now built an international business operating in the digital world.

Ian’s company was responsible for designing and building numerous high tech applications such as Air

Traffic Control and F1 simulators, an online Risk Assessment platform for one of the world’s largest mining companies and even an online application to demonstrate the power of the IBM cloud-based analytics engine, which they presented to a conference of 22,000 delegates.

One of their early development was the telemetry for tracking the Americas Cup boat races. They have now built similar applications for numerous sports including Golf and Cricket.

Ian’s presentation was engaging and extremely interesting and was a great story of how a visionary Kiwi has made it big on the world stage, and all while operating from Dunedin. He says he has never had a business plan and that he never thinks he took a risk. Ian is also a great believer in the concept of paying it forward.

Next up were the Bar Room chat sessions in which everyone broke into groups of around 15 and spent the next hour and a half discussing anything they wished to bring up. There were a few topics that were placed on the list to kick things off, these and a few other points of interest managed to spark some great debate amongst the participants.

After the lunch break Dean Addie, co-founder of automation and electrical specialist company EIS, presented his journey in creating a Health and Safety culture within his own business. This was a highly relevant topic considering the new Health and Safety legislation that had just come into force on the Monday prior to the conference.

Deans clear message was that you must build your culture around 8 -10 golden rules. Starting your safety journey with a ‘why’ lays the foundation principle that engages your people. You need to find out what their ‘why’ is. Why do they need to keep themselves and their work colleagues safe?

Dean showed a great visual idea that personalised the ‘why’ by getting his staff to attach a photograph to a board with the reason they needed to go home from work safe at the end of each day. This could be a photo of a husband, a wife, a partner, a family, a child or children or even a pet.

This presentation served as a great reminder of the responsibility of all business owners when it comes to managing the health and safety of their workforce.

Following this was the bar room chat wrap up by Alan and Neil. Numerous subjects were discussed in the break-out sessions but there were a few common themes coming through from each of the groups. Possibly the most contentious being the proposal that CRA take on the distribution of the iBodyshop software as a form of income stream. This certainly sparked debate amongst the members with some questioning the ethics of this for a trade association who has other software suppliers as members. The outcome of these discussions resulted in the announcement by Neil that CRA would not be pursuing this any further.

Courtesy cars and their associated cost to the repairer has always been a topic of discussion, and this year was no different. Two companies have now started in Auckland offering replacement vehicles to ‘not at fault’ parties with the cost being passed onto the other party’s insurer. The discussions were positive without a doubt but some were hesitant to offer the service in the fear of a backlash from insurers that could affect their contracts in the future.

His delivery was natural and candid and his accounts of his adventures both in the mountains and in general life were definitely not lost on the audience. Mark stressed the fact that in order to survive in the mountains you must have knowledge and faith in your teams, no different from that in your business.

That brought the days sessions to an end and also an end to the official part of the conference. After the obligatory thank you to all participants, presenters, organisers, and of course the sponsors, Alan wrapped up the day by expressing the hope that everyone will look at reaching their own highest peak and to have faith in their teams.

Further to the discussion of potential income streams and what the future may hold for the CRA, there was some debate around whether or not a merger with the MTA in the future would be a viable option. It was felt that both groups have their strengths and following Rob’s presentation from the previous day, collaboration was a word used that would sit well with the membership currently.

A recurring topic each year tends to be that around staff shortages and training, with a number of members reporting that they are now employing or actively seeking overseas labour, predominantly from Malaysia.

Many members are finding it increasingly difficult to train and retain young New Zealanders and the generally positive reports from those employing non-New Zealanders is making this an attractive alternative.

The final part of the conference is of course the Otbury and AkzoNobel dinner, this began with pre-dinner drinks on the balcony of the venue on a very pleasant Dunedin evening, followed by an excellent meal.

This year the awards presentations were combined with the final evening meal and as usual the recognition of excellence in our industry drew a very high standard of finalists. Congratulations to all finalists and winners of

A surprise inclusion to this years celebrations of excellence was the awarding of Life Membership to past chairman Gary Geeves. Gary’s dedication to the CRA and many industry initiatives has been recognised in a most fitting manner. After some friendly banter and a couple of stories from Gary’s past, the official preceding’s were complete. This gave signal for the band to start playing and the fun continued till late in the night. This was a great end to another very successful conference.

The 2016 CRA conference would have been one of the best that I have attended, and I have only missed one in the last eighteen years.

Of all the sessions that I attended, which was most of them, I felt the content was of value and relevence to all who attended. The nature and quality of the speakers was great and to see a capacity attendance that was particularly engaged in the whole conference showed a real commitment to the future of our industry.

NEW ZEALAND’S ULTIMATE SHINE 2016 WINNER

Meguiar’s have awarded the sought-after title of “New Zealand’s Ultimate Shine” for 2016 to Warren and Angela Sara’s 1957 Chevrolet Belair.

The objective of the Ultimate Shine Competition is to reward the car(s) that best represent the ULTIMATE SHINE, therefore it comes down to the reflection and shine seen on the cars in the photos. The entry criteria was simple – your car had to be shiny, with a mirror like reflective shine. The Ultimate Shine title is given to the car that best represents what Meguiar’s stands for as a brand. We weren’t looking for the best type of car; we were simply interested in how well it presented its reflection and shine.

The Chevrolet Belair has a stunning body shape, and the photography captures the reflections of the surrounding environment beautifully, it really shows the depth of colour and wet look shine combining to give the best representation of what Meguiar’s is all about.

CRA Conference 2016 - Reach for the Summit The 2016 CRA Conference was held in Dunedin at the Dunedin Centre, the conference was kicked off in typical Dunedin fashion with delegates being welcomed by Tartan and Bagpipes.

The conference was held over two days with a mixture of conference sessions, bar room chats and trade stand exhibitions. RALI was an exhibitor with a Health & Safety focused stand, to stay relevant with what is happening in the industry with the new Health & Safety Act. Aligning with the changes RALI launched a new range of products from RPB Safety; this included a new GX4 Gas Monitor and new range of respirators.

Roar New Zealand Started in November 2015 by Dave Dumelow, Roar New Zealand are importers of premium compounds, polishes, paint protections and consumables for the panel and paint trade.

Dave has worked in the panel and paint trade since leaving school in 1977. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1997 and began working as a painter at Eurotech Auto Repair Centre in Mt. Wellington. In 2005 the opportunity arose to become a shareholder/director of the company. Part of the everyday challenge as one of the owners of Eurotech, or any panel and paint shop, is the desire to find better procedures, practices or products to enable shops to achieve quality output in the challenging market.

One such opportunity arose when Dave’s former apprentice and work colleague Richard Singleton visited New Zealand. Richard had worked as a car painter before becoming a Global Technical Demonstrator for a manufacturer of similar products.

Richard was embarking on his own new journey as a Director of Roar. Richard is well aware of the necessity to test products in actual market and climate conditions and asked Dave if Eurotech would try out the new product range. By testing products globally, the products are manufactured to suit the needs of the environment in which they are used.

Richard, along with two other directors, who between them have over 35 years in the industry, embarked in the UK to design and manufacture their own premium compounds, polishes and consumables. Roar are aware that there are no generic products in this industry worldwide when conditions vary so much.

They have tested and developed the product range and have now taken the products to the UK market, parts of Europe, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Dave says: “Richard first approached me in late 2014 to see if we at Eurotech Auto Repair Centre would be keen on testing his products in New Zealand. After sending samples over we vigorously tested them and found the product an excellent cutter of all paint finishes. We also found considerable savings in time required to complete the procedure and clean up.

The cutters in the flagship product 610 Extreme Cut produce a hologram free finish without the need for antiswirls or finer compounds to remove scratching.

Seeing and using the products and realising their potential I began to look into getting the product into New Zealand. I had a desire for new challenges along with a change in lifestyle, and so I made the decision, after a lot of thought, to sell my shares in Eurotech Auto Repair Centre to one of the other directors and embark on a new venture. With the support of Roar in the UK, Roar New Zealand was established as a supplier of premium products to the industry.

Having approached a few leading industry distributors and demonstrating the products to them they are keen to market our range and it is currently available through Autolink Group of Companies, ART distributors (BASF) and Ultra Paints.

REGIONAL ROUNDUP Central North Island Branch There’s been a changing of the guard in the CNI branch, With Lou Pilkington stepping down and myself and Jeff Robson steeping up to join the National Executive and Chairman’s role respectably. I would just like to give a massive thanks on behalf of the CNI branch for the last eight years of hard work on the National Exec, I take my hat off to you. I will try and stepping into the big shoes to fill and we will be planning a CNI branch function in the near future. If anybody out there would like to help out

on the CNI committee we would love to have more input.

Manawatu/Whanganui/Taranaki Branch Our local branch AGM has now happened and for those who did not attend, Warren Bradley is our new Chairman.

The annual CRA conference was on a couple of weeks ago down in Dunedin. A few great days were had catching up with everyone and chatting to those people you only see at the yearly conference. I think a lot of people are relieved after finding other repairers share the same problems and issues they face in business.

Huge congratulations must go out to Ben Thomas and his crew for attaining I-Car Gold Class. This is a great recognition for all the effort Ben puts into training and up skilling his workers.

We are having some great weather lately, too good for the duck shooters. Hopefully it can last for a while longer before winter really kicks in to gear. Workflows seem to be steady for the first quarter of the year and I have not heard of anyone complaining about a lack of jobs.

Hawkes Bay Branch Hi Everyone, Well it has been a great summer and unfortunately it’s time to accept that winter is on its way. With a warm start to our winter it seems to be green paddocks around the Bay and a good amount of wine making going on (which I look forward to sampling).

Our conference this year appeared to be a success. It seems a fair amount of our Hawkes Bay wine made it all the way to Dunedin, although I had a fair job beating Mr Zuber to that. Conference delivered some interesting 52 PanelTalk

speakers and activities. I believe attending is a great way to keep motivated in our business and keep up with the changes in our industry. It also gives us an opportunity to step away from the office and look back from another angle.

Work loads seem to be steady if not hectic in Hawkes Bay. Neil and Alan have suggested they will visit the Hawkes Bay in the near future, so I hope to get a good number together for an evening.

Otago/Southland Branch Well hello once again from the Deep South.

We will by now, all be fully entrenched back into our businesses after attending yet another great Conference in Dunedin. Thanks to the weather team for providing such lovely sunny days - showcased your city well. I am sure you will all agree it was a very informative event with some really amazing speakers, who hopefully will have inspired us to push ourselves to a slightly higher level and reach our new goals. It was great to also see some new faces attending and hopefully they will have enjoyed all that was on offer and look forward to seeing them again next year.

Northland Branch Hi All, from a still warm and sunny Northland (22 degrees on 27th April)

Work wise shops all seem busy with steady work volumes.

Although the turnout from Northland was comparatively low, those who attended reported an excellent Dunedin Conference with good speakers, and it was great to see a full house. Thanks to all of the organisers.

Socially our annual Fishing Competition will be held on Saturday 21st May – a big thanks to our sponsors. At our next branch meeting we will sort dates for our Northland CRA road trip in our region when two or three committee members will be taking time away from their busy businesses to help support others through the CRA, looking for branch ideas, comments etc. We will be emailing Northland Members with dates and are really looking forward to getting out and about.

A big congratulations from Northland Branch to Jordan Davies from Imperial Collision Repair Centre in Whangarei for taking out this years’ Golden Hammer Award. This is a reflection on the commitment to training and development by owners Warren and Leslie Davies (Jordan’s aunt and uncle), they always have an apprentice in their facility. With a shortage of trained staff and apprentices in our industry it’s great to see employers having the commitment in developing our future tradespeople.

Wellington Branch Hi All I recently attended our annual conference, this time in sunny Dunedin. Once again I came away with good feeling about our trade as despite all the doom and gloom that gets spoken about, it is always great to meet people from our trade who are keen and optimistic. I met several people from around the country who I hadn’t met before, that are looking at their businesses and making plans for the future, be it by diversifying or just looking at new opportunities in their area. For example truck repairs, restoration, fleet work, or many other things I had never considered or even knew about.

Well the days are certainly getting shorter and it’s nearly time to get used to going to work in the dark and getting home from work in the dark too. Despite my predictions of dire weather being not too far away, it’s been fairly settled and if anything we need a wee bit of rain.

Most shops in our region are reporting consistently strong workflows, with many having three to four weeks booked out in advance. It’s good to hear that everyone is busy, so long may that continue!

This year’s conference in Dunedin was a beauty. I actually managed to make it to all the sessions too, despite being led astray on the first night. It’s great to go to these functions and meet up with old friends, make new ones, and generally mix with your industry peers. I would strongly encourage anyone who hasn’t been to one to seriously think about doing so.

Just as an aside, this is the fifth draft of this article that I have managed to save. My ipad has eaten all other copies and even my kids can’t retrieve them for me.

Hence it’s short n sweet.

Auckland Branch The Auckland CRA fishing competition has been and gone now so I would like to say a huge thank you to those that made the effort to come along. It was probably the smallest group we have had but it sounded like everyone had fun with most catching fish. My crew of ten from A1 Autofinish had an awesome charter boat this year which brought them plenty of good fortune as they swept the prize table, and I unfortunately couldn’t even be there this year so missed all their excitement. I certainly heard all the stories on Monday though and it was great to hear.

My staff always thoroughly enjoy themselves and look forward to it each year, so I don’t mind investing in them having some fun as it is a great way for me to reward them for all their efforts.

We have the Boat Cruise coming up next weekend (7/5/16) so it will be all over by the time this goes to press, and unfortunately the numbers are just not there for this event either. Bloody hard to get the Auckland members involved with anything right now, and I understand that we are all running busy lives, but I’m damn sure you would have a great time if you got off your backsides and got involved with at least one event.

It is nice to see that everyone in Auckland seems to be

busy at the moment so hopefully that trend will continue throughout the year.

There are still plenty of shops looking for staff at the moment and this was a big talking point at the Conference as well. No real short term solutions at the moment for this problem I’m sorry to say.

Speaking of Conference, I was very impressed with the warm Southern welcome we received and I must say that it was a very enjoyable Conference, so if you missed out this time then don’t hang around next time. The short format was enjoyed by everyone that I spoke to and there was a strong feeling to keep going to the smaller regions for these, as it is a great way for the locals to showcase their region.

Well done to Alan Le Noel for taking on the Chairman’s role again this year. I know that he does not take this role lightly at all, and I also know that not everyone will appreciate his approach, but I have seen just a small part of the effort that he puts into it (and there is so much more behind the scenes) so I really hope that you all support him throughout the year.

Next year’s Conference is in Melbourne so I’m really looking forward to that one!

Good to see a few more Auckland shops joining the CRA recently, and it is really pleasing to see that the level of compliance has been very good. ALUMINIUM TECHNOLOGIES CONTINUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS (PART1) In this issue we will look at one of the latest advancements in aluminium technologies that are finding their way into our current auto body fleet - perhaps not for everyday applications, but as a pre-cursor of what is to come.

Arguably, the most important feature of this process is the fact that dissimilar materials can be joined together without the joint(s) being compromised by cross contamination and incompatibility etc.

(Aluminium to steel / steel to brass etc).

Recent attachment method advances - Friction Stir Welding (FSW): Invented by Wayne Thomas of TWI Ltd in 1991, this process was primarily used for the joining of aluminium materials, but is also used for copper, steels (including UHSS, Usibor steels etc), titanium and other metals -

Applications for FSW include the aerospace industry (rocket fuselages etc), ship-building, robotics, computers, high speed trains and nuclear waste encapsulation, to name a few.

In simplified terms, this joining process involves the use of heat, mechanical movement and pressure, to fuse materials together without the weld becoming molten at the weld site - rather the materials become "plasticized" and fuse together. Therefore, the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) is much smaller, resulting in much lower distortion rates, less porosity and lower rates of cracking / splitting of the welded parts.

AUTOMOTIVE STEEL MIG WELDING QUALIFICATION: This validated qualification assessment allows participants to demonstrate their welding skills by measuring a technician’s ability to perform ten welds in both the vertical and overhead positions using 0.75mm and 1.6mm thickness steel coupons. The steel thickness and weld configurations reflect the joints most commonly used on today’s vehicles.
