Febrile Seizures What is the damage For the most part, having a febrile seizure will not cause any damage to your child. It will not leave him or her with brain damage. The odds are very high against a febrile seizure being a sign of epilepsy (a seizure disorder not related to fevers). Although small, the risk of epilepsy exists in those children who have: •

febrile seizures that last longer than 15 minutes

febrile seizures in which the whole body is not involved

more than 1 febrile seizure within a 24 hour period

cerebral palsy

delayed development

some neurological problems

If your child is standing when the seizure occurs, he or she may be hurt falling to the floor or ground. It is also possible for your child to choke on food or saliva. Follow the steps on the next page to help avoid these hazards.
